720HP 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A - LOUD 9.4L Flamethrower!

- Surely one of the coolest cars I've uploaded to the channel, if not the coolest. This Challenger, driven by Beat Gubler, kept surprising me in both speed and soundtrack during the 5 days I got to watch it race. At both events, Jack's Racing Day and the Tabac Classic GP Assen, the car competed at the top of the Colmore YTCC series.
The insane amount of power this naturally aspirated, massive big block 572ci 9.4L makes, more than compensates for the weight of a '70s American muscle car. The event commentator claimed it was running up to 1000 horsepower and after some digging into built N/A 572 Mopar engines I concluded that that claim is definitely possible.
Edit: Thanks to a comment by Beat himself I now have a bit more info on the specs. The 572ci/ 9.4L aliminium block with Indy Cylinder Heads produces 720HP and is linked to a 4-speed Jasper NASCAR transmission. It weighs 1450kg.
Enjoy this compilation of clips I filmed and edited with a massive smile on my face!

i love how its not a drag nor a drift car just an epic racecar
I was very happy to see some of these classic muscle cars turned into full-blown race cars. Can't get enough of them :)
True racing!!
You don't see that everyday 😂❤🤜🏿🤛🏿
As much as I like drag racing, I agree with you. Looking like the school yard bully out there on the track.
Amen to that!
American cars built to go around a track and not a straight line are something to behold, I wish there were more like this
Check out "Touring car Masters " Australia, or "Central muscle Cars" New Zealand, on RUclips, no shortage of Challengers, Camaros, Mustangs, Falcons, Comets ,etc racing flat out ,and lots of corners.
I want to make it a reality one day, I’m tired of straight line speed, and drifting, I want time a attack challenger/charger, Mustang, Camaro, corvette, to all compete and I don’t care what people say about the matchups, the drivers can make things happen.
@@mylifebelike7573🍻 🏁
@@mylifebelike7573it’s only real advantage is in a straight line though. Sounds beautiful.
@sidknee4975 you can build anything. As long as the suspension keeps it from rolling and the horse compensates for the aero loss there's no reason it can't be good at this application.
That 1970 Dodge Challenger look much better than the latest ones.
The old ones look wicked from behind. With the high deck lid, all you see is the light panel and tires kind of like a 917
Same applies to just about every car post 2005 or so
hey lets not hype this thing up so the car prices stay low and dobt cost quarter or million for basic model
Agreed. I sat in a new one and it's not even close. I know people like the new ones, but I personally don't like the limited view you get of the road.
As a person who owns a 2008 challenger, I'm offended....... but I also agree they look so mean. 😢
Finally!!!! Someone built and races a T/A Challenger as it was intended to be!!!
And yes I know they ran a 340 in street cars that was destroked for racing...
Seems like you've never heard of the legendary chopped Sam Posey 70 Challenger TA car. Likely the car this one was mocked after.
@@Panthercholo yep sure have champ!! Awesome cars
Theres a Sam Posey replica Challenger race car in New Zealand, running a 700 to 800 HP nascar engine, as well as a Dan Gurney replica Cuda.
Where is, the Challenger in the video?
@@barrycuda3769 What do you mean?
Seeing this thing spit flames as it approaches in your rear view must be the stuff of nightmares
Reminds me of the muscle car from cars movie
a V8 is never too big, from the moment it fits in the car
Agreed. I had to do some googling to figure out how big this one is in cubic inches. Apparently, it's a 572 ci V8.
@@yaboyblacklist2431 there's only americans to do this
but at least since the power output per liter is under 100 hp/liter it's probably more reliable than lots of race cars
and it sounds very good
I grew a dozen more chest hairs just listening to this big block American 🇺🇸 muscle beast
I grew hairs somewhere else!
Lol 😂
Something definitely grew listening to that!
Если не просто слушать, а ездить на этом звере, вырастут не только волосы на груди, но и член станет больше 😂
so you have 13 now? ... lol
I believe this actually my first time seeing a classic muscle car that people usually drag race... ACTUALLY race and take corners really well.
It blows my brains out to see how well it turns.
them tyre were some meaty boi
They be ultra THICCCCCC and SLICCCCC
I love how they lock up and burn a little every time 😂😂😂
it only weighs about 3000 lbs
@@tyvekhomewrap9164 Jesus that’s it 🤣
Now thats a hard on inducing exhaust note.
Thats has to be the best sounding dodge challenger I’ve ever heard.
Wow that thing hauls, the cornering speed is unreal as well. I thought he was going to miss the apex so many times in that short clip. 👍👍
These cars are beautiful standing still… it’s epic to see them in motion tearing it up👍🏼👍🏼
Absolutely, I love seeing these fully built monsters tearing up the track as opposed to being museum pieces!
You betcha some serious eye candy and this thing drivin is so intense it’s like devil on wheels jk
I gotta find a 2008 challenger now lol wanna pot the 340 six pack in her
I’m not a mopar fan because of todays generation of dodge products and their drivers, but I have respect for this one, it handles those corners amazingly
I hate Mopar now too, love the old stuff though.
lmao....just say it already you two😂😂
@@broocewhane1142🤣🤣
When I saw the thumbnail I legit thought it was some Gran Turismo build. Damn, what a thing of absolute beauty. Thanks for the video. This is the kind of content I love.
Thank you very much for the kind words!
Me too!
I miss sitting at an intersection with the ground shaking from the V8 horsepower.
Fantastic and refreshing video! The car and driver are amazing. I also appreciate how your video gets straight to the point - no dramatic cinematic opening, no music aside from the big V8. Your camera angles, panning, and zooming were perfect to sense the speed and see the car relative to turns and the competition. Thanks!
Wow, thank you for the very kind words! That’s the biggest compliment I’ve ever received. I can’t wait to go film more footage with my upgraded equipment next season. The videos will be much higher quality then :)
@@AlwinSVjust please stick to this format vs over production and filler. the V8 was more than enough music to our ears
Short on words, how serious this car is,driver even more.
Car and driver are both absolutely badass. There's an onboard video of one of the races that I filmed (search up Beat Gubler). Well worth a watch!
I own a 17 T/A 392 and get stupid excited seeing these originals. Thanks for the great video
Thank you for the kind words and I'm jealous of your awesome ride!
Taking corners like a 911. Talk about being Trakt...Would love to see the suspension and brake setup.
literally the hotrod from disney car movie substitute by this beautiful beast of a car
I love it. Nearly twice the Trans-Am displacement rule.
Actually this was the only way to make a Challenger a TA winner back then. The good ole' Richard Petty rule.
Great job on the car. It looks like the baddest tank on the planet.
DAM! that Challenger was RIPPING IT UP! and it has to be one of my favorites driving 71' Challenger a 383 4spd 46yrs ago, and how i learned how to drive a for the 1st time 4spd stick shift car/ into a VANISHING POINT
I am so jealous you got to learn how to drive in that! Stick as well, what a dream!
Flash back too the Good Old Seventies! Just Lovely!😅
For more than 40 years the '70 Chally is one of my favorite american cars. Original engine is - as far as I know - a 340 six-pack.
Actually, the 340 was an option. You could get any engine from the slant 6 to the 426.
From Wiki:
The standard engine on the base model was a 225 cu in (3.7 L) Straight-6. The standard engine on the higher trim models was a 318 cu in (5.2 L) V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor. For 1970, the optional engines included the 340 and 383 cu in (5.6 and 6.3 L), as well as the 440 and 426 cu in (7.2 and 7.0 L) V8s, all with a standard 3-speed manual transmission, except for the 290 hp (216.3 kW) 383 cu in. engine, which was available only with the TorqueFlite automatic transmission. A 4-speed manual was optional on all engines except the 225 cu in (3.7 L) Inline-6 and the 2-barrel 383 cu in (6.3 L) V8.
But for Trans Am racing (similar to this video), the displacement had to be less than 305 cu in.
It's surprising to see this big block taking the corners so well.
From Motor Trend Magazine:
"Like the musclecar era itself, the SCCA Trans-Am series reached its popularity in 1970. Trans-Am was known for top-name drivers and fender-banging competition. Chevrolet dominated the 1969 season, but Ford and AMC were back for more, and Dodge was in with factory-supported effort as well. This challenger was built by Dan Gurney's All American Racers and driven by Sam Posey. The Mopar Trans-Am cars ran 340 V-8s, destroked to 303 cubic inches to sneak in under the 5.0-liter limit. Horsepower was about 450, with weight around 3 00 pounds. Posey also raced in Formula 1, USAC, Can-Am, the Formula 5000 series, and at Sebring and Le Mans prior to his career as a racing commentator. This photo was taken during the season opener at Laguna Seca, where he finished sixth. The car's best results were a trio of thirds. The Challenger was never the successful Trans-Am racer the Camaro and Mustang were, but that doesn't keep it from being one of the muscle movement's most popular players-then or now."
edit: On a side note, one of my favorites was the 1970 Duster w/340 6 barrel.
You are correct. The mid year T/A offering had only the 340 6Pac engine with unique 4-bolt mains and offset valves Choose either a 4speed manual or 3 speed auto trans.
Other “goodies” offered were fiberglass functional scooped hood. Side exit megaphone exhaust Rear ducktail spoiler Front chin spoilers Staggered tires E-60F G-60R on 15” Rally wheels
ausie.. i was looking for a fastback mustang, 65-70, big block.. all made up, rusty, then this green thing came up with them, never seen one, no idea what it was.. 340 . r/t, chall sublime..had it 12 yrs..still.. 99%, of mustangs here are 289 coupe,s, boring..
@@dodgeboy3406not positive but pretty sure all the T/A challengers and AAR Cudas are 340 six packs, 4 speeds and 3:90 gears.
@@seeharvester why did 440s have less horsepower than 426s?
I pictured Tim the "Tool man" Taylor barking at this car. What an epic beast.
holy shit best sounding car EVER. 10000/10
That is the most badass car I’ve ever seen
9.4 LITERS?!?!? That’s a HUGE V8 for a Race Car!!!
Haha yep, I think those 572’s are a lot more common in drag cars where they pump out 1000HP for short runs. To see it in a race car is just incredibly cool!
@AlwinSV in all fairness the hemi design (the old gen 1 and 2's that is) were meant for oval & track racing so I'd argue this 572 Is in its natural environment
About 2-3 times bigger motor than the Porsche and BMW´s
@@thorsrensen3162 And 2-3 times the horsepower without using turbos..
That's got to be the Baddest car I've seen in a long time.
that thing is a monster in all the best ways
Imagine what an electric car sounds like and think...do we really want to just watch cars race? NO.... we go to HEAR their engines. What a great sounding Dodge
9.4L is just bananas :D love it
This is giving me Racedriver Grid 2008 vibes lol, that car is a thing of beauty, reminds me of the plymouth barracuda 1970 race car, I believe that was it at 1:47, great video man
That is one mean Challenger! I ❤it.
One of the coolest muscle cars I've ever seen
Dad was right, there's no better school than old school
It seems like Granpa doesn't want to retire, he wants to teach those newer generations how a real American Big Block behaves on the track.
Marvelous.
These are the type of engines that will literally rattle your body into mush. I love it so much.
See that behind you with flames... and you know they can heat and feel him coming!!!
that's a real american car over there with big engine big power and big price & a mpg to make you cry
As a Viper fan, very proud to see this Beast! runnin on a Road Course.
Ngl, the thumbnail made me think it was a screencap of Gran Turismo 6. Dang that is one badass build. Love it
Love the last shot of the ginormous tire difference.🤣
1:54 ...the definition of going in HOT
Beautiful in everything to its color, handling, and the best part that sound. To me nothing sounds better than a V8 built to do work, best engine sound in the world
He's giving that IMSA Cutlass a fight for its life lol
Managed to beat it as well in both races :)
That.. is the most coolest thing I've ever seen.
The car is stunning....but the driver can do it.
To win the races a team need the two of them....
Mopar or Nothing... Just awesome to see and know its being driven and Alive
That sound is just pure unfiltered awesomeness!
My dream car, has a 74 Challenger for my first car in 1980. Man I miss that ride.
Sometines I’m sad I’m too young to have experienced the time it was normal and common to see these kinds of cars on the road or to own one even. But then again, when I see them now it’s all the more special :)
That was fantastic. Great video highlighting that beautiful American Muscle.
Thank you!
Impressive, Challengers are normally a horrible track car but a great 1/4 miler. This bucks that trend Big Time.
Now that's a Challenger.
T/A is my dream car! Always love to see one.
Man nothing on this Earth in my opinion sounds better than a good ole fashioned, American made, muscly V8!
German is slightly better sounding 😮
@@KanyeKetchup the 5 cylinder? 😂 not even close.
@@lonewolftechThe 5 cylinders sound like smaller v10’s.
That challenger is dialed in nicely motor gears suspension and driver, ❤ that mopar
That car is freaking GNARLY! Huffin, puffin, and SCOOTIN!
No bullshit.... I watched so many Videos and saw so many live - but this is my absolute favourite Muscle Car I'd say. This sound on headphones is absolutely sick.... Especially, if you have an Amp.
That had me on the edge of my seat! Nice driving !!! Flames were a bonus
Reminds me of my 1970 Challenger R/T 440+6 pak. It was an exceedingly fast car. A 10:91 ET at 130 mph on the drag strip or 160 on straight hiways. Yes and that was with a 3:23 limited slip rear end.
That sounds awesome! Impressive figures too for a 1970 car. Would be a dream car for me although I’d probably turn it into a road course racer, haha
That big engine was a little nose heavy for a course car.@@AlwinSV
There are no words for this engine sound :D
Props to the driver!
I just grew a mullet and went to buy a shirt with "im with stupid-->"
Very nice to see this incredible footage and an old vehicle doing so well , very impressive indeed !!! 😁✔️👍
Thank you!
I want this video to play on repeat at my funeral
Quick turnings muscles... A dream come true!❤
That even looks quick through the corners. Sound to die for!
God, these shapes. So wide, so long, so brutal. And the ramp is on the back wing...
The most beautiful car that a person can see in life.
I really enjoyed this challenger ripping down the track thanks
Didn't expect it to go around a corner, what a pleasant surprise lol
The Challenger alongside the Mustang and the Charger are prolly the 3 greatest and most recognized cars of all time. Cuz think about it, everybody knows em when they see em
Closing speed between the challenger and the trabant must be epic.
That was great, I enjoyed every second of this. What racing is really about.
Awesome car, holds its own against some pretty fast competition, thanks for sharing, great video..
Thank you for the kind words!
Every car on track is an awesome car.
Oh my!
That is beautiful in every way.
I thought on the down shift. It was going to suck the track up. Very cool thanks
Hahaha it is a quite a monster for sure. Thank you for watching!
Ok I definitely did not expect that Trabant there, cracked me the hell up
It's trying its best okay :')
Sexy machine, the car I regret selling was my '72 Challenger, loved that car
That's the best handling Challenger I've ever seen.
Seeing the OG surviving trans-am cars and re creations such as this really need to be heard in person. Will blur your vision from how loud the exhaust is.
I have a clip on my channel i took at lime rock a couple years ago and it doesnt do them justice.
Yeah this car did very weird things to my body when it revved with me right next to it. Nice clip you have with equally tasty V8 sounds! I can’t wait to film more classic muscle next season!
HA!.....I just noticed its been about 5 minutes and I have yet to move past the first 5 seconds of the video! I must have hit rewind about 60 times so far! Just so damn beautiful! Every man with testosterone I promise you did the exact same thing at least a few times before allowing it to just play normally. Thumbs up if your a testosterone beast! America need us!
Whoever is driving behind the Wheel of that boat, hats-off and big respect to him!
He made it look like, it handles like a Lotus Elise.
They don't weight that much
OUCH......I HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH THIS MAGICAL WORK OF FREAKIN BADASS ART!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I HONESTLY DON'T THINK I'VE EVER LOOKED AT A WOMAN LIKE I AM LOOKING AT THIS CAR!!!😍😍😍

The vibrations were incredible, you could really feel it in your body when this thing came past.
That thing is a BEAST! It's always refreshing to see American muscle that doesn't just go in a straight line.
That 1970 Dodge Challenger is one mean bully with all due respect.
This is everything I dream of in a race car! That MF'er sucks to that track like glue! Love it!
Yes! A proper track build American classic! We need more of these!
I made a lot of pictures of this car during this event (Jack's Racing Days). What a stunning car and a beast of an engine ❤❤
I think it's the modern tires that really trick my brain when I'm looking at the cornering speeds thinking they must not be possible?
Man that engine sounds sweet & music to my ears and it handles the braking & corners well. You can't beat the 70's & 80's sedan/coupe car racing as a spectator/viewer especially when they are still shifting the stick. That engine reminds me of the Mercedes C9 Sauber racing group C in the 80's with the V8 M119 twin turbo 5ltre detuned to around 800hp (2.2bar boost) for longevity in the circuit where they were topping 200mph on the straights back then. The sound from that engine was epic as well as the brake discs glowing red hot braking into the corners.
That era of racing was far more exhilarating to watch than todays F1 which is pretty boring and far too technical assisted and those stupid paddle shifters on the steering wheel instead of making the drivers shift a stick. They should ban paddle shifters in racing full stop. Take the sport back to its roots and ban a lot of the multimillion dollar driver assist technology.
As for now the sedan racing in Australia is huge and far outshines F1 racing as people want to see actual cars in action with drivers shifting gears - far more enjoyable to watch for sure and we hope this scene re-ignites in USA as well on the race track rather than just the oval track
That beast needs to be tamed, eh? great pilot.
The engine noise is an anthem
In the 80's open class sports sedan racing was huge in Australia & NZ where anything goes and V8 muscle cars rebuilt for dedicated track racing were iconic and still are today but they have to race in the Historic Car racing class dedicated to them & it is for fun and not competive racing as it used to be back then as the cars are too valuable today
This Dodge Challenger based in Germany would be right at home over here amongst all our V8's that race and that is what the crowd wants to see and hear!!!
Another iconic racing car that comes to mind that matches this Challenger in "wow factor" is based here in Australia and it is a Mercedes 450SLC that raced in the 80's (twin turbo 1,100hp) and now today runs a Chev 6ltr putting down +700hp for track duties and the sound it puts out is also epic. The below YT link to the Merc on track and in the cockpit view as it races & the driver shifting the gears: ruclips.net/video/EQ7e_ly8jx8/видео.html&ab_channel=BlendLineTV
That Merc is seriously badass. Heavily modified historic race cars are right up my alley!
That thing is rank! I can feel the stands shaking from here!
I'd love to put this exact setup on a AAR Cuda' with the Panther Pink trim 💯👌

So beautiful I could cry. Maybe I am.
Absolute dream build. Enjoy it
Great Video and a absolut crazy Sound from this "Fire" Muscle-Car 💪
