SNL is a sad husk of what it used to be. I'd be more likely to cheer for their demise if it wasn't Kenan Thompson's bread and butter. It's really too bad there isn't a another sketch comedy show that his talents wouldn't be wasted in.
Well, its to be expected. When I copied my friends homework, I purposely made it a little bit worse so it didn't seem I copied. Same thing with simulation theory.
SNL is notorious for stealing ideas and being unoriginal. There are so many former members who talk about the toxicity of the creative environment there where they are actively encouraged to steal from each other
Tbf the trope of kid going against parents idea of their dream job for the child almost always has the kid wanting to do something that involves dance. I’m not saying it’s not a rip off. But the premise is a common cliche in media, we’ve seen it in Billy Elliot, High School Musical, Footloose, etc.
For real. I think the TIMING of these two videos is extremely important to note, too. His own instance of a coincidentally similar joke came SEVEN YEARS after Aunty Donna's version, while SNL's came very soon after his was released (unsure of the timeline). All things considered, I think it's entirely obvious that the folks at SNL either *blatantly and knowingly stole his joke, or they subconsciously stole it, which is something that happens ALL THE TIME in creative ventures.* Joel just has the absolute class to STILL give them the benefit of the doubt and to say "it's not a big deal to me, *but I also acknowledge it's not a big deal because I'm at a place of success where that is possible." * The class of this guy!
To be fair if this was an intentional rip off by SNL writers, then the fact that there were SO many points where the two sketches could have been different but weren't, suggests that said writer(s) never thought that they would be caught red handed copying someone's work who has over, at the time of that video what, 1.5 million subscribers? Coincidences can and do happen.

What truly gets to me is that all these big media companies don't mind stealing other people's ideas, but absolutely flip their lid if it's ever the other way around.
Big media companies have an army of lawyers to go on offense with every claim. "Content Creators" are lucky to have just one lawyer to protect themselves with.
I couldn't stop laughing at the point where Joel was essentially just like, "well at the end of the day SNL is small potatoes to me at this point and even if they stole my joke they delivered it in an unfunny way so it's not even like it existing hurts my video either way."
Damn, I didn't get that vibe at all but I can dig it. Would've been cool if he had went into it like, "I don't really think SNL stole my joke. They clearly tried but wasn't able to pull it off, but hey, they try their best over there despite the lack of talent so gotta give it up to them. I'm just lucky to be in this position where I am able to put together jokes that people will recognize as comedy, but I don't wanna hate on anyone at SNL since it must be hard running a comedy show without any comedy. But hey, no hate, I'm just really glad to be here and whatever."

Joel took a video he knew would be viral (the title, the controversy, the content) and turned it into a billboard for creators he appreciates. What a solid dude.
Just goes to show what an incredibly wholesome guy Joel Haver is. He lets SNL off the hook and on top of that, he sheds some light on smaller channels trying to grow a big audience.
i personally have always found SNL to be unbelievably cringe, i just can’t sit through live sketches or those things like “kill tony” where they pretend to be having a normal conversation as if there isn’t a crowd sitting around expecting em to be funny😂 i might just be weird though cause ANYTHING in that format bugs me lol just cant bring myself watch shows filmed in front of live studio audiences
Did... Did Joel just look at a big corporate entity stealing his idea and say, "Well, yeah, coincidences happen I guess. But since this video is probably gonna get a lot of attention, here are a bunch of other people who make cool stuff too"? The level of wholesome this man is is incredible and I love all of it T_T
SNL will look into all of those channels I bet! (I'm just joking, not meant to frame this into something negative and yes this was really an awesome way for him to take this and spin it into something useful for smaller channels. Very cool!)
This guy is either genuinely the most wholesome creator out there, or a massive genius using this as a way to both prop up smaller creators while making him look infinitely better in the process rather than calling out mainstream media
Jesus Christ died for our sins, rose from the dead, and gives salvation to everyone who has faith in him. True faith in Jesus will have you bear good fruit and *drastically* change for the better! Those led by the Holy Spirit do not abide in wickedness. *God is ONE manifesting himself as THREE;* the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit! Bless him! *For these three are one.* As I am led by the Holy Spirit, nothing I state is a lie, but the truth of God. Anyone who tells you differently is misinformed or a liar. They do not know God, nor led by him. Anyone who *claims* to be a Christian and is against what I am doing, and where I am doing it; the Holy Spirit does not dwell within them, they lack understanding. As much as I respect you basically letting SNL off the hook, you really should hold them more accountable. Corporations tend to steal ideas like this all the time and give no credit, and it’s practically criminal.
As much as I hate these things happening, it’s unfortunately not possible for many small creators to sue and confront corporation about these things. Many big corporations have large legal teams, and they will find every excuse to not take accountability. Even if they directly ripped off a piece of art, a script, or design.
He promoted channels that are funnier than SNL, so in the long run he is hitting SNL in the wallet if only a little bit. Otherwise he has to pay out of pocket for lawyers, take a bunch of his own time, and potentially lose, which would encourage SNL to steal even more ideas without penalty. This video may not be a big hit, but its a guaranteed hit at no cost to himself, in fact his response will probably earn him more money directly with views, and also earning many more subscribers in the long run, which could end up being more valuable than what he may have won in court.
@@cosseybomb lol which part? The part where a couple people stop watching SNL because of this or finding funnier content, or the part where this channel benefits from taking the high road, the idea that he may lose in court?
Joel has displayed a new level of RUclips enlightenment: 1. clickbait title 2. but it's true 3. and he's super thoughtful about it and 4. actually it's all just to push underrated creators ❤
You took a situation that reasonably could have bothered any content creator and handled it with such grace, tact, and humility, even using it as an opportunity to give praise and attention to creators trying to reach a level of success you've already achieved. What a gentleman. I started following your channel because I appreciate the effort you put into your content, and you're genuinely hilarious. Every time you take these moments to monologue about creator struggles, you come across as a very thoughtful and grounded person. I am pleased to support your channel. So, thanks Joel.
Joel's attitude towards art and content creation has consistantly been so admirable and genuine. People like him are the true heart of internet culture.
This is an insanely mature response, I really appreciate you using it as an opportunity to uplift other creators. I think you definitely have a right to be rubbed the wrong way, but if you’re comfortable with the situation that’s all that matters.
He knew this video would go viral so he decided to use a good portion of it plug his friends. Such a nice thing that goes easily overlooked. Thank you for being awesome.
That’s gotta be the BEST way to start a video like this. Just a quick “hey, these things happen. These things happen a lot more often than you’d think, but this… this is too blatant” 😂
SNL could never duplicate the style of humor that you deliver. Its so unique and leaves me laughing yet feeling slightly empty and I don't know why its so addictive.
SNL's writers are old and writing content for people who still care about cable TV, the kind of people that you have to tell exactly what they're supposed to laugh at. They're crippled by that honestly. Your average viewer under 30 would rather watch higher quality, completely original content from average Joes like them.

I really like how chill you are about it. I'm sure most people would understand if you were freaking out and angry and wanted to sue. But it takes an extremely confident creator to be so calm and happy that someone stole one of their comedy sketches. Props for being the bigger man.
As some one who gets ripped off of IP all the time Im glad he has proof, and youtube algorithm picked it up so its a lot of free advertisement. both ways, for allowing some grandpa show no one watches to steal his IP to try and stay relevant.

This vid made me realize of how I almost fell into that exact trap! There’s a bunch of discourse online around artists vs. AI, and even though I strongly believe the issue is more of the people using the AI rather than the AI itself, and believe it can be used in a way to help artists and not replace them (as if that would happen anyway) I still was getting pretty heated and wound up making a bunch of comment threads and the like, and all it did was make me more stressed! This video made me realize that I need to stop doing all of that to the degree I’ve been doing it, and instead, acknowledge the negative stuff, try to look for positives, and more importantly, redirect my attention from complaining (because that’s basically what I was doing, and I’m not proud of it.) to doing more positive things like promoting my artist/animator/creator friends! Plus, I should really focus on getting some stuff done myself, because I got a few projects and stuff I need to get done in my personal life! Spending all my time on ranting about something isn’t going to change anything! If I want to show the positive sides of AI art in a way that doesn’t harm other artists, I should just try out the websites themselves! If I don’t wanna bother with it, just leave it alone! This video really helped me see I need to refocus my attention on more important things at this moment right now! This is actually my first video I’ve seen of Joel, and I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction! Thank you Joel!💖💖💖

I dunno, I think he should hold them to task (if he can) its a matter of principle, they have not payed him, just stolen his Idea repackaged they will make Millions of ad revenue from that, and if he does not challenge it, he runs the risk of them challenging him and trying to pretend they own the IP. This kind of stuff happens all the time. Also not contesting this in a certain amount of time actually says legally "i dont own this", thats part of copyright law, you have to make efforts to enforce it to take it too court and win, or not lose if they try to screw him later down the line. Because equally if they did that he could legally end up being ruled as not the owner of the IP. I agree his attitude is really good from an emotional and human POV, but from a legal POV he should look into it for his and the sake of others like him, if possible

They also repeat sketches. I heard an interview with Mark Hamill who said he realized they "wrote a sketch" for him and he saw the exact same sketch from an earlier episode with Paul McCartney.

Well, its to be expected. When I copied my friends homework, I purposely made it a little bit worse so it didn't seem I copied. Same thing with simulation theory.

They try too hard
They couldn't even have him say "mom Dad, i wanna be a journalist" they had to do everything exactly the same
Tbf the trope of kid going against parents idea of their dream job for the child almost always has the kid wanting to do something that involves dance.
All things considered, I think it's entirely obvious that the folks at SNL either *blatantly and knowingly stole his joke, or they subconsciously stole it, which is something that happens ALL THE TIME in creative ventures.*
Joel just has the absolute class to STILL give them the benefit of the doubt and to say "it's not a big deal to me, *but I also acknowledge it's not a big deal because I'm at a place of success where that is possible." * The class of this guy!

It's okay, I will hate SNL a little bit more to make up for it.
Joel takes the imitation = flattery route, and then promotes other folks.
I appreciate the way you interact with the world, and the way you look at things from different perspectives.
Thank you for being encouraging, inspirational, and kind. You're awesome!
it's important for him to take that road because both of their videos basically copy the premise of high school musical
Too many words I’m not reading that

If SNL stole your video then that means you got some good ass content
joel is a truly good hearted dude. for real. he could have easily made the video that everyone was expecting trashing SNL, but instead he chose to do the opposite. massive props joel, we see you and we appreciate you being a source of light and decency in an age where both are desperately needed

I thought Joel was a class act when he did a tutorial for how he animates, saying he just wants everyone to have tools. Now, he gets his content jacked, and he takes it as an opportunity to absolve the likely thieves and then promote smaller creators. Joel seems like a great guy!
i kinda thought joel did that explanation of how he animates, because he wanted people to use it themselves. he should feel good about the fact that others are copying his style. he literally created a whole new genre of animation. you could call it "Joel Haver Style"

i was tslking about Joel's video where he explained how he animates. i thought he did that so people could see how he does it and imitate it.
i watched this entire video in its entirety and i think Joel made the right decision here to react the way he did to the snl sketch.
the stole his "concept", but they wrote all new dialogue that was different from Joel's video and the inside of the house looks totally different and the dance the bears did at the end of the snl sketch was more "stolen" from the tv commercials than from Joel. the except for the concept of the one bear wanting to dance instead of college and the dad's disapproval, the SNL sketch bore more resemblance to the tv commercials than joels video. and in the snl sketh, the dad eventually relented and gave his approval, which didn't happen in joel's video

You are genuinely one of my favorite creators mainly because of how real you are. You’re never afraid to make a video like this just talking to your viewers. Very rare and very appreciated.
How does that make them real though? If someone who didn't like talking like this forced them selvesto do so regardless, would that still be "real?" Just because they're being open? I don't quite understand why him talking about how he feels about the situation makes him more "real." Talking about ones feelings in a video, personal or not, isn't rare on RUclips or even the internet at all... Is it because he was so chill, and didn't get upset? Or, is it more because he's saying things you agree with, or in a way you too view the world?
