To be fair SNL did add their own creative liberties
Like making the video unfunny
Yep! 😂 I told my wife, “oh, so after having months to prepare, the best they can do is taking something pretty funny and make it completely unfunny.”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! That is accurate. When I saw it I thought it was awful.
SNL is a sad husk of what it used to be. I'd be more likely to cheer for their demise if it wasn't Kenan Thompson's bread and butter. It's really too bad there isn't a another sketch comedy show that his talents wouldn't be wasted in.

What truly gets to me is that all these big media companies don't mind stealing other people's ideas, but absolutely flip their lid if it's ever the other way around.
In a word, money.
Heck, even when they're credited and it's done in fair use, they still flip out
Copyright doesn’t matter to multi million dollar companies until it affects them.
Big media companies have an army of lawyers to go on offense with every claim. "Content Creators" are lucky to have just one lawyer to protect themselves with.
Yup lawsuits out the ass but when they do it its fair game…
It always amazes me how big budget productions like SNL manage to deliver a worse version of the thing they’re copying
They have to water it down for people that watch SNL.
Well, its to be expected. When I copied my friends homework, I purposely made it a little bit worse so it didn't seem I copied. Same thing with simulation theory.
Because its passionless...
SNL is notorious for stealing ideas and being unoriginal. There are so many former members who talk about the toxicity of the creative environment there where they are actively encouraged to steal from each other
They try too hard

You took a situation that reasonably could have bothered any content creator and handled it with such grace, tact, and humility, even using it as an opportunity to give praise and attention to creators trying to reach a level of success you've already achieved. What a gentleman. I started following your channel because I appreciate the effort you put into your content, and you're genuinely hilarious. Every time you take these moments to monologue about creator struggles, you come across as a very thoughtful and grounded person. I am pleased to support your channel. So, thanks Joel.
I couldn't stop laughing at the point where Joel was essentially just like, "well at the end of the day SNL is small potatoes to me at this point and even if they stole my joke they delivered it in an unfunny way so it's not even like it existing hurts my video either way."

They clearly tried but wasn't able to pull it off, but hey, they try their best over there despite the lack of talent so gotta give it up to them. I'm just lucky to be in this position where I am able to put together jokes that people will recognize as comedy, but I don't wanna hate on anyone at SNL since it must be hard running a comedy show without any comedy. Joel is a national treasure.
Successful people usually just let this happen and keep making good stuff. “They stole it? Oh well, on to my next project”. Glad you have that attitude
Yes, let's claim you should just allow people to steal from you.
This is not the first time they have done this, it happens relatively often.
As much as I respect you basically letting SNL off the hook, you really should hold them more accountable. Corporations tend to steal ideas like this all the time and give no credit, and it’s practically criminal.
As much as I hate these things happening, it’s unfortunately not possible for many small creators to sue and confront corporation about these things. Many big corporations have large legal teams, and they will find every excuse to not take accountability. Even if they directly ripped off a piece of art, a script, or design.
He promoted channels that are funnier than SNL, so in the long run he is hitting SNL in the wallet if only a little bit. Otherwise he has to pay out of pocket for lawyers, take a bunch of his own time, and potentially lose, which would encourage SNL to steal even more ideas without penalty. This video may not be a big hit, but its a guaranteed hit at no cost to himself, in fact his response will probably earn him more money directly with views, and also earning many more subscribers in the long run, which could end up being more valuable than what he may have won in court.
Most likely not much he could do

Man took it like a chad. Happy for everyone and as long as his stuff is appreciated, he's good
Hey this video brought me to @wizardswithGuns and it's one of my favorite channels a year later so thank you for shouting out some great creators!
I frickin' love you. You've taken a situation where many lesser individuals would have undoubtedly reacted either aggressively or negatively, and you've turned it into a positive like no one else could. You took 'being the bigger man' to a whole new level, promoting some excellent other channels. If more people were like you, the world would be a much better place.
Seriously, this is why we love Joel
I thought of this joke well before this "Joel" skid did. This isn't something that's super original. Just some random person who decided to film it. In fact, we should be ashamed of this Nobody for being so reductive.
And don't try to argue or disagree with me. Because you yourself said to not be aggressive or negative. I'd hate to call you a hypocrite
I dunno, I think he should hold them to task (if he can) its a matter of principle, they have not payed him, just stolen his Idea repackaged they will make Millions of ad revenue from that, and if he does not challenge it, he runs the risk of them challenging him and trying to pretend they own the IP.
This kind of stuff happens all the time. Also not contesting this in a certain amount of time actually says legally "i dont own this", thats part of copyright law, you have to make efforts to enforce it to take it too court and win, or not lose if they try to screw him later down the line.
Because equally if they did that he could legally end up being ruled as not the owner of the IP.
I agree his attitude is really good from an emotional and human POV, but from a legal POV he should look into it for his and the sake of others like him, if possible
@@Instanence LOL...sad troll.
What a top bloke
It can’t be overstated how good of a guy Joel is. Like, wow. This is the most mature and open minded response to something like this I’ve ever seen!
He defends copywirte bc he has copywrited. So moreso defending himself in a weak position in the way the wi t cause backlash from his idea taking again and again g
I can only aspire to be this well adjusted.
@@heliumnetworking5103 either way, I deeply respect his diplomatic and kind approach to this
@@DavidVandemark idk seems pretty hack and lame to me.
As a e.g if he had his wife murdered by SNL. But he had murdered the wife of Aunty Donna and came out with a statement that 'hey murdering ain't so bad it happens meh my wife may have been murdered but hey who can blame them, let me change the topic also to fill out this statement with random shout outs'
Like I guess kudos for not being a hypocrite but also thats more to save personal face and being called out for the same 'crime' then any diplomatic statement
Other obvious senerio
'Hey snl murdered my wife let's which just them!!!'
Crowd: hey didn't you murdered the wife of Aunty Donna, let's which just you too"
@@heliumnetworking5103 your comparison seems a bit over the top, honestly. But I respect your opinion
Your style of comedy is so refreshing. The first video I saw was "It's not working" and I was laughing so much, and I was so surprised that this type of content exists. It's just pure quality. It's intentional and I love it.
You are so gracious, it's incredible the way you handled this situation
You're a class act, Joel. Not everyone has the self awareness to realize that as lame as this sort of thing is it doesn't steal from how well you've been doing, and even less people would pivot that to point to others who create as emphatically as you or the SNL cast does even if it doesn't get such high views.
That said I'll be sure to do more than pat your back. I'll do as you suggest to support the community by watching a film noire about doodoo pants.
Lol you are haven't created anything of value in your Life so you have no actually understanding of being robbed. Someone taking credit and profit off your Life that spent doing said things is just ok? That's mental slavery. Kanye had that right.
@@TheRealBigMonster They've been going downhill for years, I guess that's what happens when you push out all the actually funny people and only leave the low effort high ego personalities
Great video! Thanks for all the cool recommendations.
The best example I've seen on how humility brings charisma and respect.
What a stand up dude. Used half the video just to promote some other channels and friends whose stuff he likes. I didn’t even know who you were before this popped up somehow but I’m subbed now. Always appreciate someone spreading positivity when it’s not necessarily the first thing that most people would think to do.
Yeah, he's a reservoir of ideas. I could use reservoir of ideas.
I Second the motion! Never heard of this person, but the humility and seemingly genuine attitude is so refreshing and wholesome. Subbing for this reason, whether I end up liking the content or not. If more creators on these platforms had this mentality and attitude, the world would be a better place.
@@janaetrojan4469 Joel's legit one of the funniest I've seen on YT. He does awkward, surreal shit absolutely spot on.
I don't know, I think he's less of a stand up comedy guy and more of a multimedia skit guy. /j
Lol when saving face to not get called out for stealing content himself.... Then changing the subject to pad out the video length for the algo for the views generated by mentioning SNL.
Lol
In an SNL Drama/Theft video - you go out of your way to not just brush it off, but you plug a bunch of great channels and share a bunch of new stuff to us. You're on a whole other level of being a great dude. You're amazing.
I was thinking about that: woah, that guy communicates from a really nice level of being
It's okay, I will hate SNL a little bit more to make up for it.
Thumbnail is GENIUS! Hiding your views while showing their huge amount of views, actually genuis lol
I'm actually so glad SNL stole your video because it meant that you introduced me to Wizards with Guns. They are so underappreciated and consistently funny with amazing production values
Joel takes the imitation = flattery route, and then promotes other folks.
I appreciate the way you interact with the world, and the way you look at things from different perspectives.
Thank you for being encouraging, inspirational, and kind. You're awesome!
it's important for him to take that road because both of their videos basically copy the premise of high school musical
Too many words I’m not reading that
@@inkwell6131 The process you went through to write that comment absolutely took more time than reading the original comment.
It's disguising how moved I was by how well you handled this situation. When you started introducing smaller creators in the middle of what is probably your highest (so far) profile moment, I got chills and teared up. Bravo.
Lmao chill
I also teared up, I was absolutely moved by his words, I am in tears at the moment. Just in awe of this eye opening, inspiring video, it was just amazing how he handled it, I was so moved I got a t shirt with his face on it, and put a life sized painting of him in my room, I’m just so inspired, and moved, it’s crazy! good day
@@ethansilva9562 It's okay to have feelings
disgusting as fuck
@@AnonymoStranger i agree bro. seeing compassion and deference at a point where a person could totally further their career and be self-focused, is a moving thing. i can see why somebody would get emotional about that.
You are a cool dude for seeing this in such a balanced way. I've never seen your stuff, but i'm now a fan of you as a person and looking forward to checking out your videos.
It's crazy this was over 1 year ago now! Time flies
How you turned this into a sweet genuine gesture to smaller channels is awesome. I think your whole attitude is great, you're just accepting it and I think a lot of artists would have trouble doing that. Proud of you
Ye it's super rare these days. Infact I'm not sure I have EVER seen any creator react with such humility but at the same time confidence to just carry without any bluster.
Nice as it is, I think SNL still should be doing something like this for Joel. Or at least recognize that 90+% of their sketch was plagiarized and give credit where it's due. Because let's face it, if Joel weren't so nice, and he wanted to sue, I'm pretty sure he'd win. SNL needs to acknowledge Joel and apologize or at least recognize his work publicly, regardless of whether they intentionally stole it or not.
Joel is definitely up there when it comes to nicest RUclipsrs. He could've turned this into REAL drama, and made a bunch of money through revenue. Instead he acknowledged it, gave his feelings and used the people who came to this video expecting drama to holster up his friends. Genius level generosity.
Oh, and made a bunch of money through revenue.
@@terraversalvoid5391 He could've made allot more if he dragged it out
@@terraversalvoid5391 if he had caved in to greed and drama, he would be swimming in rivers of cash, but, he would basically trade his soul for that

This is my first time in this channel and watching any of your videos . I subscribed because you seem like a down to earth person. Can’t wait to see the rest of them
Wow, You immediately went to ragging on yourself for having “copied” an idea from someone else. What a humble response. I hate when I see this comment but -> you gained a sub. Respectable creator 🙌
shows how dope Joel is. he knew this videos title would bring a lot of people in and used most of the video to shout out other channels. truly a stand up guy
I'm pretty sure he's more of a skit guy, occasionally animation too

Joel is the pure definition of "Kill your enemies with kindness". Love you man, you deserve every bit of the success you currently have and much more!
I like your style more, and this really gives you more spotlight honestly, haven't even seen the snl sketch, but I'm sure the fans will make this bigger than it is
Aw Joel - gracious to a T! While I find the coincidence peculiar, if everyone limited their ideas to checking whether its been tried before then we would have no science, no medecine, no laughter. Only found your channel recently and am LOVING it.
This is the healthiest and most empathetic response to something like this. Good for you, Joel. This humble attitude will open many, many doors for you.
Wtf are these comments dude. You his psychologist or something?
you are actually such a great role model, not just as a content creator, but as a person. whoever taught you the values that you have today should be very proud of you, bro. hope you receive all the love you deserve for being you.
This right here /\
"Content creator" is not a thing. RUclips is a gig/hobby. Anyone can post here.
so someone who creates content is not a content creator? lol why nitpick about something so inconsequential

Lmao I didn’t expect this video to be as a direct and mature response as it was
This dude is so classy. Gave away a new animation technique so others could create and now turns what could have been a good dig at the mainstream into a shout out for the little guys.
