  • The reviews of the Ortofon 2M Black LVB 250 have been fantastic. I had to try it myself. I then decided to run it against the Bronze and Shure V15III.
    No regrets, it is a fine piece of eqpt.

    My apologies, I did not monetize this RUclips did, the copyright holders want to get paid.

    My 250 LVB lasted two years before having to be replaced. I switched to the original 2M Black, and the difference is very evident in the SQ.

    All are awesome cartridges that make you wonder how the cult of the moving coil cartridge ever got started. The 2m Black LVB is a bit smoother than the 2m Bronze, which I own, but I find the Bronze to be more musically engaging. This may be because the Black is not fully broken in. The 45 year-old Shure V15 holds its own against these more "modern" cartridges.

      to me the 'cult of the moving coil' comes from the same place as people who justify spending 10s of thousands on a mechanical watch. it's a miniaturized, mechanical, hand-made thing of beauty (and it's inherently fragile) but the lightest generator masses are moving iron, not moving coil.

    You shouldn't use a weight on the Thorens will damage the bearing and shim, check the bottom of the shim it shouldn't have an indentation, and the bottom of the spindle should be perfect without any line around it. the bearing can be improved I've done it on mine by changing the shim and and the plastic shim underneath and two types of lubrication.

    The LVB 250 was too bright and detailed, for my liking. The Bronze sounds warmer than the LVB 250, producing a more natural vinyl listening experience. The Shure lacks punch, unlike the Bronze, which sounds more full. However, I prefer the sound of the Shure over the LVB 250. Overall, the Bronze sounds the best. In my opinion, the LVB 250 isn’t worth the $500 upgrade from the Bronze.

    You have very nice equipment. Do you have a preference for MM over MC? That is the case for me. I am breaking in my black lvb 250 right now. Its been 40+ hours and it is starting to open up. Thanks

    • @ejcheck
      @ejcheck  2 года назад +1

      Thank you. We recently moved into a new retirement and I decided to go for the brass ring with the audio.
      I'm 71 and my hearing is starting to show my age. I am perfectly happy with the MM carts I'm using. I have been concerned about the fragility of the exposed stylii on the MCs as well.
      I think that any sound improvement would be marginal and not worth the expense (for me).

  • @thomosburn8740

    The not-calibrated mic is just picking up room resonances - there's no stereo picture to speak of and your camera movement is also causing phase problems (the mic shouldn't move).
    The real way to demo a cart on video is a direct feed to the computer, bypassing both speakers and room (with all those reflections).
    This would be a enlightening side-by-side comparison if you have the amp direct feeding a line level output to the computer next time.

    Do you find the Tube Box S2 sound to be better than the McIntosh onboard phono pre?

    • @ejcheck
      @ejcheck  2 года назад +1

      I'm happy with the McIntosh on-board preamp. The MA352 has a better phono section than the MA252 and allows you adjust for capacitance matching. The VPI is running through the Mc phono.
      The TubeBox S2 is quite good and I picked it up when I was using the phono on my Yamaha Receiver. This was a major improvement over the Yamaha. I am using it with the Thorens TD160 on an aux input of the Mc.
      Both are good and I think pretty similar in performance
