17:35 Everybody always calls out how he doesn't notice anything but this is such a good presentation of the stagnation in his life. The exact thing that Liz broke up with him for. Every single day he walks the same path, trips over the same curb, to the same store, making the same choice of drink. He's so set in his routine that he doesn't notice the zombies.

They actually lay out what happens in the film early on at The Winchester. “We’ll have a Bloody Mary first thing [they kill a zombie named Mary in the backyard], a bite at the King’s Head [Shaun’s stepdad Phillip gets bitten in the head], couple at the Little Princess [Liz is the Little Princess and David and Dianne are the couple], stagger back here [they imitate zombies to get through a horde of the undead to the Winchester], and bang, back at the bar for shots [they use the pub’s Winchester rifle to shoot the zombies].”
Also you have "You're dead" to the kid with the ball. "Next time I see him, he's dead" to the flatmate and " If you want to live like an animal, go live in the shed" to Ed who ends up living in a shed.

here's another 'blink and you'll miss it' (or in that case, don't freeze-frame and you'll miss it) joke I've never seen mentioned: "the place that does all the fish" is the literal name of the restaurant in the yellow pages xD

also I've just noticed on this rewatch that pete tells ed "you wanna live like an animal, go live in the shed!" when he's angry after throwing the record out of the window... this script is tighter than I thought. Hot Fuzz does it more obviously, probably to its own advantage.

So, the back story you're missing here is that prior to this movie, they had a TV show called "Spaced" that Edgar Wright directed, and that Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes, who played Yvonne the Shaun female counterpart, both wrote and starred in as strangers that posed as a couple to get a flat, in kind of a "Three's Company" type thing I guess, but are just flatmates/friends, and he's just a geek that works in a comic book store, and whatever else. Nick Frost hadn't even been an actor when Simon Pegg met him when they worked together as waiters in a restaurant, but they became fast friends, and Simon just thought he was so naturally funny, that they just threw him in the show as Simon's buddy, despite him having no real experience as an actor, so that's how that started. My assumption about the Yvonne character has always been that they just wrote it in to the script as an inside gag for the "Spaced" fans, and probably also just to throw Jessica Hynes a bone as a friend, even though she wasn't really apart of this at all.

Once you realise it's not supposed to be scary but slapstick, it takes on a whole new perspective. That being said, despite it being slapstick, the scriptwriting, directing, etc., is so well done. It teases you with little details and references throughout, and when you least expect it, it brings you back full circle. For what it is, it's a brilliant film and should be on so many watchlists for many reasons.

There are sooo many references to George Romero's Dead trilogy here... from music cues (Dawn of the Dead '78) to "Were coming to get you Barbara" (Night of the Living Dead '68)... even Ed's reaction to getting bit (similar to a scene in Day of the Dead '85). Btw Edgar Wright sent his final cut to George via DVD before the film was released, to get his blessing... and he absutley loved it. So much so he gave Simon and Nick cameos in his 4th zombie film, Land of the Dead.

The reason ed (Nick Frost) has bald spot is because he was shaving his scrotum so he would naturally scratch himself throughout filming as part of his character. Simon Pegg grabbed the electric razor and took a chunk of his hair with it. Not sure why Nick Frost decided to shave his nuts while Simon Pegg was in the same room. But that's the story behind the bald spot.
