After recently binging "The Queen's Gambit", I had a MIGHTY NEED to make myself a couple new pinafores. I decided to try a couple different styles and some fabric I recently picked up from the thrift store (opted for the NOT earth-toned ones... I know, who am I, right?) Anywho I hope you enjoy!

So excited about this! Tell frodo he is a handsome good boy
@@mynameishannah I love your content! Hope you had a great week off
Frodo is a lovely dog. Your videos have given me the urge to make my own clothes. Vintage ones
OK but what's your Support ID because we need to be In-Game friends!
Helpful hinty: I have a couple dozen pinafores that I wear every day over shirt/blouse and cape dresses and kirtles, and all of them are open-backed. Take a look at Amish designs. Those open backs can save you up to a yard of fabric when you’re piecing from remnants and castoff textiles. 😉
These were marvy, by the by. You’re hilariously entertaining.
OMMMMGGG, I AM SO HYPE FOR MORE PINAFORES IN THE WORLD!!! Shirts under dresses (and pinnies) is MAH JAM
Right!? love them
YES!!! LOVE THEM!! ❤ HI MORGAN!!!
I recently sewed my own pinafore look inspired the red one you wear in your videos :)
I'm starting to think they could be my jam too, after my second major hand sewing project (purple plaid flannel housedress based on medieval shift pattern with gores and gussets) turned out so dang comfortable, a house pinafore I can wear over a sweater in my cold house might actually be a thing I want to wear instead of sweatshirt and PJ pants :P (yes, my aesthetic is "total slob on a day off" but I'm trying to find stuff that's prettier but just as comfy, I wear a lot of polarfleece)
I love pinafores I just never knew they were called that 😂 I called them overall dresses
Frodo's getting awful sassy now that he's a celebrity.

When you desperately try to remember what you had for breakfast for like 10 mins, give up and hours later go into the kitchen because you're hungry and see what was supposed to have been your breakfast because you forgot to eat after going to the bathroom 👍
My husband looked over just as Rachel was lying across the fabric and goes "Oh, are you watching a yoga video?" and I nearly spat out my coffee

I’ve always loved pinafores but felt like I’d be made fun of by loved ones for looking too “schoolgirl”, and then me and my husband were watching queen’s gambit and he made the comment, “I love her outfits, you would look cute in something like that,” and now I am wearing all the cute things I wanted to wear for so long!! Why would you assume they would get rid of their clothes in a few months? Who does that? Rich people maybe.
@@spicybeantofu
She is talking about typical fashion RUclipsr's, who do large hauls of off Wish and such websites all the time, just to create content.
Of course, depending on where they buy from, they probably also just send lots of it back. But it still kinda promotes the 'quantity over quality' mindset, of course and triggers people's 'I wanna have that, too!' reflex.
@@raraavis7782 yeah hard agree... It's become a deal breaker for me if RUclipsrs do hauls like this. I really don't want to follow people like that. Especially since I've never seen anyone wear the outfits afterwards and they often order things to bash on the quality for the 'drama' of it...

My high school uniform was a pinafore, so watching you make these always has me stuck somewhere between "those are the cutest things I've ever seen" and existential dread.
Rachel should make a video in which she finally tackles the pile of unused clothes in her closet that she convinced herself that she will alter one day... and never did.

More unsolicited sewing advice: when making a multi-gored skirt and it appears as if the waist might be too tight because you don’t have enough fabric for another full panel, try cutting 2 (or more) strategically placed panels with wider-than-usual seam allowances, so you have a bit extra already in place to enlarge the circumference of the waistband.
Ms. Maksy, it has been fun to watch your sewing skills advance by leaps & bounds over this past year.
Great advice! The other option is also to sacrifice some length and trim the skirt at the waist to increase the waist circumference. 😊
@@elzannelouw5666 This is what I was going to suggest.

😉Inherited three sewing machines, but still do seams by hand.
Last time I used a machine was 7th grade sewing class. Needless to say I retain little from those days -- except the😨horror of trying to understand pattern instructions & how to measure something.
Two things that might be simple for the average bear🐻, but are still torturously difficult tasks to me.

I just had the mind-blowing realization that, now I’m making my own skirts, I, an Hobbit-sized individual, can wear a maxi skirt. My life will never be the same.
Also, I made myself a button-front plaid skirt recently and my sister declared it “very Maksy.”
I love pinafores, they are definitely overdue for a come back. I love how the full skirt hides my flat and does not respond to exercise butt. I am now going to have a conversation with my sewing machine about making a new pinafore (it's a 1953 Singer and it has moods).
Oh if youtube had a laughing emoji reacts instead of just like orbdislike buttons 😭😭😂😂😂
I've got a 1950's Singer too. She is moody but lovely
My Grandma taught me how to use her sewing machine which I’m guessing is also a around a 1950s singer, that is the only sewing machine I know how to use 😂
I think newer machines have more moods.
Glad to see you back! And I'm never sick of seeing that pattern honestly. Shows that's it's a good investment to have a pattern that just plain works.

@@rachelmaksy Since you like that pattern so much, you should consider making a "hard copy" of it in cloth. Frodo shouting at his staff 🤣🤣🤣 😎😎😎. Love the darker material pinafore. Looks great on you xx
Is there a rules about pinafores not having pockets cause neither of these pinafores had pockets Rachel
A traditional pinafore usually has pockets. The garment is, after all, utilitarian in nature. One nifty design feature has a side opening such that the left pocket conceals the opening. The pocket pouch is only sewn halfway up its outside edge and the remaining sides neatly turned and hemmed. As the waistband is opened, the pocket sides "gape" to allow enough room to get it on and then folds neatly back in on itself. Anything to avoid having to put in a zipper, plus it's more authentic! I learned this trick from a child's pattern, Simplicity 9282, but it can be made to work with any waist-banded skirt.
I never use pockets so I never put them in my clothing. If she doesn’t use them either then there’s no point in putting them in
Yeah, Rachel where them pockets???

9 year old me is screaming inside over the mismatched directional plaid. Once you've been taught to match patterns, anything off is like an itch you can't scratch. I will say though, this is one of the few none matching choices I can tell myself to chill over a argue that it's a design choice to have the front focal panel be different.
I really appreciate that you're willing to share your journey learning to sew as an adult. My Mom was adamant that we learned, as well as things like basic plumbing home repairs and car maintenance, but I know most of the kids I grew up with didn't get half as much teaching on those formerly considered "basic life skills". Now most of those kids may have gotten better paying jobs right out of college, but this year has really turned the tables on the structure our system of valuing certain types of knowledge over others, and hopefully created opportunities to bring people together (through zoom calls! NOBODY GO TO IN PERSON GATHERINGS RIGHT NOW, PLEASE!).
I am rewatching this as I'm making a pinafore out of my late grandfather's old flat sheet. I saw the sheet in my mom's pull-up barn, and asked if I could have it to make a dress out of because I really liked the plaid pattern. I have no pattern, vibes only. Lol
At about 8:45 was the first time I was able to actually read her tattoo and I’m CRYING ITS SO PRECIOUS

I feel a lot like that when it comes to my wardrobe nowadays. I found yet another great solution that works for me though. When I see an item I like and the price is o.k, I buy it, even though it might not be all perfect and then I tailor it too my specific needs in my little Atelier. Lately I found a wonderful scottish ckeckered skirt with suspenders, which are detachable. Since the skirt came only up to a size which is a wee bit too small for me, I will detach the suspenders and simply use them for adding extra width in the skirt at the waist. The rest of this skirt style is big enough to fit me since it is a what we call "Tellerrock" in Germany. What is that in English? Plate Skirt, haha (Circle skirt). Huggs from the Schurwald Forest, Germany.
🎉Yay🎉 on your circle skirt (suspender) fix. 🤗Admire your willingness & skill to adjust clothes to fit and make them seem more custom-made.👏
Don't sew, and altering clothes seems mighty difficult. At least those seriously skilled 📺YT seamstresses rarely demystify the process. Seen many that will rip clothes totally apart at the seams in order to rebuild & change the tiniest things about them. Adding zippers, darts, or panels seems so intimidating.
Frankly, I enjoy watching the courageous & more clueless people refashion thrifted garments. If they make an error, they have little to lose💲financially or ⌚time wise. When they get it just right, it is a big win🏆 for all concerned.
🤔In the end, who cares if the stitches aren't perfectly precise on the inside or that they didn't follow the "customary" sewing steps!?
😁The important thing is how well it looks on the outside. Updated & more tailored clothing tends to make a person feel more fabulous too👍.

I've been watching these pinafore videos TOO many times on your channel. ITS SO ADDICTIVE.
I'm pretty sure i watch this video once every 3 months! I really love the everyday clothing sewing videos! I like having a friend to sew with!
Rachel: "I bet you ain't never seen-"
Me: NO. NOT HERE TOO
Rachel: "-fashion like this before."
Me: Oh thank god
This is now my favourite comment thank you😂
I just got my sewing machine up and running, hoping to make some things too. I always get so inspired watching your videos.
Lmaoooo, really loving editing Rachel in this one
Hehehehe ❤️❤️
the shot of her pinning the blue fabric is the prettiest shot I have ever seen, it is *chefs kiss*
I am so thankful I found you on youtube. I have been watching all of your videos. Your aesthetic quirky spirit is getting me through the last stretches of graduate school. Many thanks
I see the title and first thought is "what have you done with our Rachel?!"
Also DAMN YOU! With all your lovely vintage -i can't find anywhere- patterns!!
Don't take this the wrong way, but do you ever pin the fabric to the rug when your pinning the pattern pieces to the fabric? 😂
ALL THE TIME
Bro I even pin it to my carpet 😭💀😂
@@alaynaegbert3012 if you are looking for an alternative, using the stuffing thing for ironing boards works well and it’s usually quite cheap. You sometimes get little fluffies but they’re usually obvious and easy to get out
@@rachaelevans8351 alrighty! Thank you!
@@alaynaegbert3012 it’s called ironing board padding- I use the minky smart fit felt pad (£4.99 on Amazon) or the brabantia ironing board replacement felt bad (£8.99 on Amazon) depending on what’s in the hardware store by mine
thanks for making me smile ❤️🐶❤️
I just got a sewing machine so I will never tire of sewing content. Thanks Rachel!!!
I feel like you're working your way towards being able to do what Annika Victoria does sometimes. "Wearing only things I've made/upcycled for a week" kind of thing.
Rachel: theres a lot of heckin panels
Me (a seasoned watcher of this channel): yeah theres 12
Editing Rachel: like 12 i think???
Me: :)
Same lol
😂❤️❤️❤️❤️
i want to see a skirt with all 12 one day.... also i want the pattern lol
How about theta adorable pyjamas Beth wears in Queen's Gambit? We need more adorable sleep wear in this pandemic!
Beth's black pinafore is everything, so glad you made one similar to it!
worry not i am here solely for the amateur sewing content (not that you’re really an amateur anymore) because it’s nice to see someone else sewing and wearing their creations even though they’re not 100% perfect, which is nice inspiration for me whos just getting started :)
