When using an acrylic or fabric paint on cloth, a layer of gesso under the area you intend to paint on is great. It prevents the paint from seeping through the backside of the fabric, can prevent bleeding, and increases paint durability. It also stiffens the fabric a bit, which can be a downside. There are also great fabric mediums intended to be mixed with paint for craft purposes. The sleeves turned out so great, I love them!
I've used the fabric mediums mixed with acrylic. They are great and make the paint flexible so it is less prone to cracks. Just be sure to iron it on low (with some paper to protect your work) after!
PS: Your channel is one my husband typically wouldn’t care about, but we both enjoy your sense of humor & you remind us in various ways of our twin daughters who are about your age. And we miss them. My husband especially misses a daughter who moved 250 miles away & I think he is more excited than I am when you come out with a new video. But don’t tell him I told you that! Shhhh
Oh my heart, this is so wholesome. Also my husband, who couldn't give two hoots about sewing or cottage-core, loves Rachel's videos. Some personalities transcend their ostensible communities.
I have just had a similar realization! I am a newbie, I started sewing for real only this spring because I've always been so intimidated by it. My mom sews a lot and she makes it seem so complicated, and all the sewing I've ever done has been at school where I was graded and there was so much pressure and you needed to do everything The Right Way™ or you would fail. But then I suddenly, on a whim, (or maybe after watching a million of yours and Bernadette Banner's videos) I decided to sew a dress based on a very vague description I saw on Instagram. I didn't really have a pattern, I just experimented, and that made me realize that I can do whatever I want, however I want. Does it always turn out great or the way I want to? No. But like, it doesn't matter? There are no rules. I can experiment and try and see what happens. I'm learning so much, I'm having so much fun and I have sewn a pair of trousers that is literally one of my favourite garment that I own. I think your approach to sewing is really inspiring, and I love the mushroom sleeves so much!
You should totally start a series called “I sort of know what I’m doing” where you go back to projects you’d like to try again or do things you wanted to do but didn’t think you had the skill 😀
@@PatiNagy there were plenty of sleeves in that time that used a full yard of fabric, each. Which shows just how expensive they would have been. Less than a yard for the bodice, two yards for the sleeves. If you were poorer, that’s a significant expense.
The little *”I sorta know what I’m doing”* slapped me clean across the face. I don’t ever come to these videos to be called out on how being a legal adult/my life in general is going, but somehow it always happens. 😭😂😂😂
The sleeves look so cute! The "stem" fabric you added I think really helps, it looks more finished and intentional. As usual, you are fun and funny and never change and I personally like a video where you just make one garment.
"I want to take the forest... and wear it as clothing" Never before has anything resonated with me on such a spiritual level Also! idk if you already have ideas for your next videos, but something pride related would be so cool!
As a seamstress, I want to say that you are 100% correct with not being hard on yourself for your mistakes. ESPECIALLY when you are learning. If you are happy with the outcome, and if you made something you like and will wear, then you absolutely succeeded and nailed it. I love seeing all your projects, they are so creative, they inspire me to try more creative projects too 🙂
Man, it's so nice to hear support of sewing coming from a nice internet person. As I stare into my closet slowing filling up with dresses I've made, some of which I like, most of which I'd like to burn, it's reassuring to hear that it's fine to dive in. I wish many good bedspread/sheet finds to all the sewing people here (since real fabric is expensive and environment etc).
Ok, first: those sleeves are, as the poets would say, "stinking cute". Second: thank you for exposing my ears to "Country Toads". In a good way or a bad way? I still don't know.
On top of other Miss Frizzle comparisons going on in the comments, I will also point out that "take chances, make mistakes, get messy" is practically the order of the day around here.
An 1890s ghost somewhere: *crying "I'm so proud! Our daughter appreciates ✨The Sleeves ✨" Also, re: making mistakes in sewing is important: In my current project (1940s french knickers) I messed up and sewed the french seam all the way up on the wrong side. So now they open on the right instead of the left, and suddenly the awkward hopping to not fall over when putting them on is solved! Moral of the story, sometimes mistakes are Learning Experiences and sometimes the thing you learn is that your new way is better (and your bad balance is not symmetrical 😁)
I feel your pain! I have so many botched projects but those are what I have learned the most from and usually end up loving best. That is why I appreciate Rachael's channel so much, she shares her process and mistakes as well as her wildly funny and charming personality.
I would just like to state my appreciation for the fact that you painstakingly make sure the captioning is perfect on every single one of your fantastic videos. you have grown so much as a creator, but you’ve had perfect captions for a very long, consistent time. thank you!
ah yes this is so important!! even as someone who has no issues hearing, i still appreciate it so much to help me focus on the video and enjoy it so much more :)
I love how this turned out! Very cute! And as a (very much a) beginner sewist, it's encouraging to see the people I look up to on RUclips be real and make "mistakes." I really appreciate it and your humor more than you know.
Rachel, you making random-ass projects is the content I'm here to watch, wholesome, funny, honest crafts, you could make literal trash bags and I'd be here with stars in my eyes
I feel like these sleeves could also make adorable jellyfish sleeves (why didn't Tsukimi think of this????). Either way, I loved this idea, and I love practically all of your content, even if it is another episode of "I'm just going to make something because I'm not clever enough to come up with any other kind of content" because it's just as beautiful!
The sewing aunty advice made me feel so validated as someone who is really just getting into my own clothes making. It seems so impossible and the patterns are so complicated but you inspire me to just keep on trying because you have so much fun💙PLEASE never stop making videos. Also videos with just one project are awesome because we get to see a more of the process and your comedy
I was literally just telling my roommate that I like the way that you show sewing is a learning process and how it’s made me feel a lot more excited to keep improving my sewing over time AND THEN you dropped the solid auntie advice. I’d say you’re doing a great job and 10/10 can back you up as a fellow auntie
I'm here and stay here because of your personality, humor, and down-to-earth attitude. I like that you don't try to make everything seem like it's going perfect when it's not. It brings realism. I'd rather see you do one project, small or no, or half of a project, than see you overburden yourself and stress yourself out. I want to see you enjoy making your projects and enjoy how much detail or work you put into it, than see you scramble and be unhappy at the end of it.
Literally your honesty about the mistakes or “could of been betters” made me think ahh I wouldn’t of seen that so maybe I’m too hard on myself…so I got a lot done in lockdown thanks to you and non-perfectionism!!!
"You are good enough, and anything you make is good enough, because you made it!" I did not expect the adorable mushroom sleeve video to come for my feelings like that 😭❤️️
Watching a couple RUclipsrs - you included! - who sew without necessarily following all the "rules" has helped me realize I can do the same, and I've made some things I love that would have been so much more intimidating if I'd felt like it all had to be done Right instead of experimenting and making stuff work. Thank you for your inspiration. It's a great way to be. ❤
I was going to say this! It's so rare to hear someone non-speaking so say Finnish words correctly. So sad to say this but it really made my morning better. 😄
Your being in the middle of the journey is what I live about your videos, because you have the same energy I have when I sew "I should do it this way to make it the correct way but.... I can't be bothered. Round corners it is!" And I love that.
I feel like Rachel is slowly becoming the eccentric grandma that introduces the group to the murder mystery/D&D adventure we are all going on and I am here for it!!!
This was flipping awesome... I absolutely MUST show this this to my husband! He’s a mushroom forager and tincture medicine man... and my dream is to design clothing that allows me to merge with the trees in the Forest...Now I know why I absolutely ADORE you!
This might have changed my mind about big sleeves, they are so adorable. Seriously though it was your videos that made me go "oh, that doesn't look nearly as difficult as I thought", sewing looked so intimidating but now I have a sewing machine and I'm attempting skirts so yeah, not being perfect makes it way more approachable so thank you!
I like the use of Bowie's "Fashion" because you know, at some point in his decades of interesting clothing choices, he probably would have worn these sleeves. They came out reeeeeeally cute! Also, I have a feeling I'm about to lose hours of my life to watching Toad singing videos...
Loved the Aunt advice. I stopped sewing for 8 years bc I felt so insecure about my sewing. Also ironing sucks. And your vidoes are getting me thru a hard time right now. So thank you!

Just when you said, "I'm going to be a little easier on myself." I was telling my hubby that if I ever met you I was going to tell you to be easier on yourself because you are an amazing person.
Anybody else want Rachel to start her own fashion brand so all of her Whiskey grandpa's could wear such fun clothing? 🦊
Heck yeah
I've recently added 2 waist coats and 3 shirts with puffy sleeves to my wardrobe because she makes it look so nice and I want to look nice.
Yeeees

Rachel:: “…because I like to make things a little bit harder for myself”
My husband: “ME. That’s me. That would be me if I sewed.”
“I want to take the forest and wear it as clothing” is my ultimate mood. They say to dress for the job you want, and I would like to be a professional mushroom unbothered on the floor of a forest somewhere 🍄
...until a hobbit gets you!
That’s what I’m hoping for! So long as it’s Pippin, I’d die a happy mushroom😅🤷🏼♀️!
Rachel: *complaining about the 93 degree heat*
Me, a Scottish person: "aw I hate the heat too! hold up one second though let me just..." *converts to celsius* "OK I CAN FULLY EMPATHISE NOW I WOULD ALSO BE DYING"
Yeah no kidding, 33 degrees???? :'D We were just complaining about the heat here in Finland yesterday, it was... 25 degrees out. Tomorrow's gonna be 15... xD
@@elieli2893 hahaha 33 Celsius laughs in Australian
@@heathern8043 Here, that's literally a yearly record temperature, happens in maybe one or two localities in the whole country once or twice a year, and it gets reported in the news :'D
hey look, as another Australian, 33 is not record-breaking or anything (we usually cross 40 at least once each summer where I am, and that is horrifying) but it is *definitely* complaint-worthy! I will support all heat-complaints as soon as it's above 30! Especially if it's humid, UGH.
Oh yeah, I tap out at 24 degrees. This kiwi prefers the autumn cool :)
*translates 93 to human temperature, nods* As an Aussie, that's quite warm.
its really a standard spring day tbh
Close to the proverbial boil, one might say.
@Charlotte Surrey same
@Charlotte Surrey Yup, 20°C is pretty much the limit (Canadian here).
As a South African, I agree. That is quite warm.
Oooo noted
I've used the fabric mediums mixed with acrylic. They are great and make the paint flexible so it is less prone to cracks. Just be sure to iron it on low (with some paper to protect your work) after!
Rachel in front of the blackboard, with her glasses, explaining the construction of the garment is giving me strong Evelyn vibes from the Mummy
I love how Rachel leaves in awkward outtakes to remind us you can be awkward and awesome at once!
Sooo cute. 😭
I'd love that.

Ooh yes!
Yes yes!
i personally LOVE the "simpler," one item makes, whether that be sewing or crafting like the book nook video :3
“There’s enough material in those sleeves alone to make a waist, I declare there is.” - Marilla Cuthbert
I instantly thought of Anne’s dress as well. Now I *really* get how much fabric went into those puffy sleeves 🙈
I was taken there too.
@@PatiNagy there were plenty of sleeves in that time that used a full yard of fabric, each.
Which shows just how expensive they would have been. Less than a yard for the bodice, two yards for the sleeves. If you were poorer, that’s a significant expense.
@@katherinemorelle7115 thank you for that extra bit of information!
Rachel: mushroom sleeves
Morgan Donner *peeking around a corner*: MA’AM
The little *”I sorta know what I’m doing”* slapped me clean across the face. I don’t ever come to these videos to be called out on how being a legal adult/my life in general is going, but somehow it always happens. 😭😂😂😂
Same. Why listen to instructions when you can trust your (half of the time tells you the wrong thing) gut?
"I sort of know what I'm doing" is the theme of my life. Why aspire to being really good at one thing when you can be mediocre at a lot of things?
A jack of all trades! Or a jane of all trades?
"I'm just going to make something" is my favorite type of content, so you won't see me complaining👀
The sleeves look so cute! The "stem" fabric you added I think really helps, it looks more finished and intentional. As usual, you are fun and funny and never change and I personally like a video where you just make one garment.
Projects like these where you aren’t killing yourself with deadlines are absolutely fine. Personally I enjoy any content you put out. 🍄🍂❤️
I would like to give this a thousand thumbs up.
"I want to take the forest... and wear it as clothing"
Never before has anything resonated with me on such a spiritual level
Also! idk if you already have ideas for your next videos, but something pride related would be so cool!
PRIDE THEMED OUTFIT
"i just want to wear the forest as clothing"
just cover me with leaves and leave me here to grow moss pls
that sounds like every other hozier song XD
@@asterismos5451 you beat me to it
Ok, first: those sleeves are, as the poets would say, "stinking cute".
Second: thank you for exposing my ears to "Country Toads". In a good way or a bad way? I still don't know.
I love that the eggshell coloured ruffles look like the gills under a mushroom it really makes it read mushroom
Agreed. I think if she added another smaller sleeve below that it would look like the stem of the 🍄
On top of other Miss Frizzle comparisons going on in the comments, I will also point out that "take chances, make mistakes, get messy" is practically the order of the day around here.
your aesthetic is either whiskey grandpa or whimsy personified and i honestly love that
I LOVE how you lugged that chalkboard out just to *electronically* draw on it.
My new summer farewell must now be “May the swamp-ass be few.”
I’ll be breaking that out like “peace be with you” in a Catholic mass
And also for you-
An 1890s ghost somewhere:
*crying "I'm so proud! Our daughter appreciates ✨The Sleeves ✨"
Also, re: making mistakes in sewing is important: In my current project (1940s french knickers) I messed up and sewed the french seam all the way up on the wrong side.
Rachel: I don't know if it reads as mushroom.
Me: I think you look like a fungi.
Yes😁🍄
I would just like to state my appreciation for the fact that you painstakingly make sure the captioning is perfect on every single one of your fantastic videos. you have grown so much as a creator, but you’ve had perfect captions for a very long, consistent time. thank you!
ah yes this is so important!! even as someone who has no issues hearing, i still appreciate it so much to help me focus on the video and enjoy it so much more :)
*sees Rachel’s jack-o-lantern pillow*
“Ahh yes, ‘tis officially the pre-autumn season”
I love how this turned out! Very cute! And as a (very much a) beginner sewist, it's encouraging to see the people I look up to on RUclips be real and make "mistakes." I really appreciate it and your humor more than you know.
Rachel, you making random-ass projects is the content I'm here to watch, wholesome, funny, honest crafts, you could make literal trash bags and I'd be here with stars in my eyes
Same
Same
EXACTLY!
Yes ! Such a great idea !
Her car's AC is so powerful and I'm incredibly jealous.
Yes, I totally agree!
Rachel: *Names dog Frodo, becomes concerned at the amount of toe-hair*
Me: Names have POWER!!!!!
My bff's mum named her kitten Bast then was so shocked when she acted like a goddess who expects love and service at the drop of a hat
Like te fu- the kindly ones
Rachel: I sorta know what i'm doing.
Also rachel: creates all the costumes for a fairy tale retelling broadway musical.
That's our girl!!!
Morgan Donner would lose her shit over those sleeves! I did. That is so hekkin adorable 🥺
"You are good enough, and anything you make is good enough, because you made it!" I did not expect the adorable mushroom sleeve video to come for my feelings like that 😭❤️️
The dress is so cute! The toad songs, not so much!
@@leslikuyweski4576 I LOVE The Toad songs 😂
Watching a couple RUclipsrs - you included! - who sew without necessarily following all the "rules" has helped me realize I can do the same, and I've made some things I love that would have been so much more intimidating if I'd felt like it all had to be done Right instead of experimenting and making stuff work. Thank you for your inspiration. It's a great way to be. ❤
I love how the titles to your videos have basically become like actual conversations to your viewers because we are all friends here💖✨
I’m half Finnish and hearing you pronounce “sauna” correctly made my life
I was going to say this! It's so rare to hear someone non-speaking so say Finnish words correctly. So sad to say this but it really made my morning better. 😄
I’m half Finnish too and this comment is so true! I hate when people mispronounce it 😂😂😂

I loved this. It had a bit of a nod to “Over the Garden Wall” to me.
All I want in life now is for Rachel to be my dungeon master
Ok but a grandma dungeon master would be DOPE though
It just needs a mushroom sunhat now lol. I love this.
"May the swamp-ass be few" to the tune of "and also with you" made THIS Catholic-raised person laugh HARD!
Oh that's a Catholic thing? I though it was a star wars reference 😂

I googled “swamp dress”. And it’s actually a thing. You need something cute to wear in the swampy heat

Aww all I found was green dresses and an insensitive “voodoo witch” costume 😞
I like the use of Bowie's "Fashion" because you know, at some point in his decades of interesting clothing choices, he probably would have worn these sleeves. They came out reeeeeeally cute!
Also, I have a feeling I'm about to lose hours of my life to watching Toad singing videos...
Loved the Aunt advice.
I stopped sewing for 8 years bc I felt so insecure about my sewing.
Also ironing sucks.
And your vidoes are getting me thru a hard time right now. So thank you!
