It’s so interesting to me to hear the phrase “zero waste pattern”. This is an ancient cloth weaving principle. My degree is in textiles, woven and constructed fabrics. Zero waste patterns are descended from Loom Shaped Garments. These garments were constructed of panels of woven fabrics, and the panels’ width, and resulting cloth, was determined by the width of the loom they were woven on. Every piece of the woven fabric was used, because it was handwoven…every inch was precious, and not to be wasted or discarded. Loom shaped garments were often augmented with gussets (smaller squares of the handwoven fabric) to create turning points for underarms, the crotch of pants, etc. I find loom shaped, handmade/sewn garments to be very beautiful and comfortable. They are also the original “zero waste” garments! I enjoyed your video - I’m happy to see that zero waste garments are coming back around. Creating one’s own personal clothing is enlivening, authentic, and can even be an ecological practice. Here’s my favorite textiles quote: “And the works of their hands clothed the living, honored the dead, and DECLARED THEIR DELIGHT.” (From the cover of an old Piecework textiles magazine.) Blessings on your endeavors! ❤
I'm still at the beginning of my weight loss journey, I am hoping to use the Cashmerette Upton dress pattern I have to make some split side dresses/shirts to accommodate weight loss. The Stitchery does split side skirts and dresses that look great.
Seeing the things (clothes, crafts etc) that I made with my own hands makes me happy. My main work is digital (data engineering) so every project I finish doesn’t make me feel as accomplished as something I made that is tangible.
Thank you for this topic. I am 65 and newly retired. For my retirement gift, I bought myself a brand new Juki. I am a beginner sewist and wanted a new hobby. My first projects have been mending & hemming. Your video has encouraged me to start learning. I believe that sewing will help keep my brain alive! Thank you🥰
I believe our personal fashion choices can be an act of rebellion. It can say a mouthful just by existing on our bodies , to create those fashions ourselves takes it miles further 💗
omgggg it's such a coincidence to have this vid recommended the exact day I made something from scratch, entirely by hand! tbh, i used to sew clothes for my dolls as a child, but then... social media and phone addiction got to me. procrastination is the enemy, sometimes i think im wasting my time by not studying while sewing and feel guilty for doing a hobby. but it doesn't matter tho, i now keep reassuring myself that keeping myself engaged by doing something productive is MUCH better than just brainrot. sorry for rambling, love the video and the patterns!
So true to all of those things. Being completely in control of the fabric you purchase, the patterns you use, the fit of the final garment, the style lines you like. You get a garment at the end that you love and no-one else has the same thing. It's complete control and I find it freeing.
Wow! I just love this channel! I have been sewing since I was 11. My dad taught me to sew in 5th grade. I didn't even have a sewing machine until I was 13. Oh, I'm now 71. You are so charming and so right about sewing! Yes, I love your microphone. :) Good job and thanks for the great encouragement!
Roberts Wood being the final boss is so real of you! My fave patterns right now are the Syd Graham Tie Top/Dress by Syd Graham (flowy, great for us weight-lifting people), the Clemence Bag by Wanderjuna (think fancy overnight garment bag, but you make it), the Chirripo Top by Itch to Stitch (fitted yoke around the upper bust and shoulders and then flowy from there), and the Taylor Skirt by Carolina Patterns (six words: button-down mini skirt with pockets)! Excited to see what you'll make next!
So the very first thing I ever sewed by machine was actually the BeeZeeArt bat pattern! I know this isn't a garment pattern, but this is 100% what improved my skills the most. You have to be so precise to make it not look wonky, which I personally don't find discouraging and actually found really motivating! I've probably made upwards of 50 of these things now as I've ended up selling them, and I'm genuinely happy it was the first thing I sewed by machine. It's more of an intermediate pattern, but the skills you learn by pushing through the difficulty are invaluable. You've got darts and gussets, you've got places where you have to get three seams to meet at a point, you've got fiddly small pieces that require a lot of pivoting, there are opposing curves and learning how to clip seams. And on top of that, it works best on a stretchy fabric! I started with fleece, so not too stretchy, and have moved to a stretchier minky. All of this meant that when I sewed my first garment (the Peekaboo oversized tee pattern) sized for a human and not a plush, the material wasn't too intimidating, and I had a really good time making it! I think choosing a pattern that holds your interest is the single most important part of sewing. For me, making garments and accessories as a beginner would've meant I never got into it, but making something I was interested in at first has meant I've been happy to make a garment, although plush will still be what I make the most of! Really interesting video, and I liked seeing the perspective of pattern progression for sewing skills from the garment side of things!
Made my first wrap dress for myself in 1964. You will find that knowing how to sew makes you think differently about everything you see. You will see everything as a series of steps, rather than just seeing the finished object. The skill also extends to woodworking and other crafting. I am glad that sewing is coming back into fashion.
You can do it!! 💪 It's just making sense of patterns one step at a time, with as many breaks as you want or need, and eventually you'll get more and more confident 😊
One trick to get you started is to buy some cheap fabric at thrift shops for example or use old bedsheets to make what they call a "mockup" which is like a trial version of the garment you're gonna make so that you aren't as anxious about "ruining" the beautiful fabric you bought :)
I love this! I had a phase, when I felt like I had to "self draft" everything and a lot of the time it just didn't turn out that well. When I watched one of your videos where you used pattern I realised that I can learn so much from using them. Yes, you have to pay and cut them and follow instructions but afterwards you know so much more.
i bought the anne tilley magic pants after watching your video on them and i CANNOT wait to make them. i have a feeling that once i make them i'll never want to wear any other pants again
I started sewing in 2019 and I regret nothing. It helps ease my stress, helps me problem solve and I have something to show for it. 😊 100% agree about the awful sweatshop conditions people work in for fast trashion industry. I only buy bras and socks now but I am working on the bra part. I didn't realize how much time I spent every day pulling on my tshirts, adjusting my underwear and tugging at my pants until I made items that fit me and was actually disgusted at the awful fit of fast fashion. We all have different bodies and need different fits. I hate seams and cover mine with scraps from my fast trashion clothes as they die off. Give all patterns some consideration, be they indie or big companies. Burda has an entire magazine that is full of patterns. There's Seamwork for a subscription service and tutorials. I love the Japanese sewing books even though they require tracing and adding seam allowance. You will find your groove. I dont sew quilts or crafts but there's a whole world of that out there too. 💚☺️
havent finished watching the video yet but omg!!! this is exactly what i need ive been avoiding looking at my thrifted fabric stash for monthsssssss bc i cant decide what to do w any of it!! i cant wait to look at all of these patterns
none of these patterns are my style, but this has definitely fueled the "sew something. anything." type mood i'm in lately. yesterday i did some mending for the first time. i had a shirt and a pair of pants that both had a little hole and i darned them up and it worked great! i also started actually sewing a project i cut out many moons ago. it's a shirt inspired by bernadette banner's mr darcy shirt, but with short sleeves because i didn't actually have enough fabric. i definitely have not optimized the construction but i'm pretty sure it's going to work in the end so that's all that matters lol
I would say I'm an intermediate sewer, but even learning just a few things at first has made me more sustainable with my fashion. I can mend and alter my clothes to make them last so much longer!
I was just telling a friend that I don’t want to start sewing. I’m a big believer of creating over consuming, but seeing seems so far out of my wheelhouse. This video changed my mind and I want to start sewing now!
I've been wanting to learn how to sew for so long, and I love fashion! This video is really inspiring me to finally follow my heart and chase my dreams. Thank you for the push I needed!
First of all, your horsey mike is brilliant!!! LOL!!! I've been sewing over 60 years. You are so right! Everyone should be a sewist! It's the greatest tool for brain-rot prevention.
I think I would probably just switch around your order. I'd start with skirts and elasticated pants then move onto shirts and dresses then more technical items that include zips as far as clothing goes. I find tops are harder to fit due to chest, and stomach sizes and darts are just annoying 😂. Anna Allen Pomona pants are amazing for beginners. Sydney Graham did an amazing tutorial on here for a tiered skirt. Also seamwork has some amazing patterns. I just completed their hansie top and it's amazing not to mention that one is free.
Love supporting independent pattern makers ✨many of them pattern test with sewists of all different sizes making the final product with many sizes and body shapes in mind 🥰
YAY for sewing! I've spent the last 3 days patchworking and quilting....I'm determined to make a hoodie and here you are with this great sewing video inspiration! Thanks for sharing your pattern recomendations. 💜💜💜
I’ve just asked for a sewing machine for Christmas with NO SEWING EXPERIENCE. I keep oscillating between thrilled and terrified at the idea of my first project, but your enthusiasm and joy discussing these patterns has totally confirmed my decision that this is going to be a great hobby. I subscribed within the first two minutes of watching, keep up the awesome recs.
I've been wanting to get into sewing for years. I finally graduate from college in May and I plan on taking some time off to travel and expand on my hobbies. I will be making many of these.
I don’t have a sewing machine cuz I’m kinda broke but I have needles and fat quarters that I get cheap from Walmart/dollar tree and I make doll clothes!! You still learn so much about patterns, pattern making and construction and about different sewing methods! It’s just on a smaller scale lol! There’s so many doll pattern books for free out there and since the projects are small they don’t take long to find. It’s helped me stop scrolling and feeling bad about it, can’t wait to be able to buy a sewing machine and make more things!
One of the first dresses I ever made was the Hubba Ding Bethany Dress! It is a wrap dress, so no zippers or closures and the fit is adjustable! I still wear the original dress I made from a thrifted bedsheet and have made at least 3 more! Amazing first garment project!
reporting back !! after watching this video i purchased the soften tote bag and am proud to say i finished it on Monday!!! very happy with it :) i bought all the fabric from a secondhand sewing store, even the wadding! thank you for the rec!
You are so right young lady. I love to see and get lost in my mind when I sew. And yes, sewing makes sense for so many reasons, which you gave outlined in your video. You are always learning techniques, which I have so much to learn. Keep going with your informative videos. Take care.
Thank you for the unique pattern recommendations! I'll definitely be giving the Zero Waste Bow Bag a try. And the Soften Tote Bag too! I totally agree that scrunchies and bags are boring recommendations for a beginner. I got bored of making basic accessories and stopped sewing for ten (!!) years until last year when I decided to just jump right in sew clothes, which I find both more satisfying and educational! The pattern that got me back into sewing was Ninni Culottes by Named Clothing. Love love love it with linen or linen/viscose blend for the summer.
I absolutely LOVE sewing! Sewing is literally therapy for me. It is such a great hobby for my brains, no lie lol😅 I kid you not when I say this is my therapy.
I have never been let down my merchant and mills - every pattern is perfection and it always goes together so well. I would pay attention to how they rank their patterns because they do rank them from beginner onwards
My grandma (rest her soul) and my mom were the people in my life who could sew, unfortunately they never passed the skill to me. I always wanted to learn, and the last time I brought my clothes to a seamstress, they were ruined… this is the calling I didn’t know was there till your video. Love your accent and style 💕
LOVE the horse, he galloped through the video nicely. lol Love all your recommendations, def gonna have the make the magic pants! I recently made the Baby Doll Dress by tropicalresearch, and am IN LOVE WITH IT!!!! It is so cool n' flowy on these hot southern days. Now to combat my brain rot, I am working on 3 different quilts at once!!! 😆 I'm new to quilting, and may have become a little bit obsessed. 🙃
I'm beyond thrilled that you compiled this list. Great points and I couldn't agree more with all of them. There was a time in internet sewist history...well I feel like folks used to do these more frequently. Pattern lists or reviews of patterns. I have quite a few Anna Allen on my list , Trop. Research and the beloved Hubba Ding. I was holding my breath to see if Roberts Wood came up and I'm so glad it did. I appreciate a more "grindy" and/or highly technical pattern. You just feel your brain GROW and it's great. Zero waste patterns sound exciting to me, drafting clothing from the material you have + your measurements - Amazing.
Thank you for this. After years and years of patchworking I recently started sewing clothes due to my daughter- in- law's interest in cosplay - and I hope there are interesting things to come. Love sewing!!!
As soon as I saw you talking into the horse I knew I was going to subscribe 😊I relate to this video so much. I am the greenest of the sewers- I do it purely to alleviate brain rot haha. I actually hand sewed a couple of cushions recently using some linen tablecloths I bought at discount. It was so soothing, I use the cushions everyday, and I appreciate them every time I use them.
ive just got back into sewing and its been exactly what you've described in this video. no more procrastination and i feel so fulfilled. i made 4 bags this last weekend 😅😊
i have to be so honest i have never used an actual purchased pattern before. i've been sewing for upward of ten years and made a few clothes and i just kind of wing it tbh. i look up what the pattern shapes are supposed to look like or trace existing clothing pieces to create something different. it doesn't go well i don't recommend. don't be like me. i'm gonna give some of the advanced patterns in here a go because some of these sound absolutely delightful. got some cotton drill from spotlight and i'm gonna make some fun star crotch jean shorts !! love watching your videos to give me a burst of energy and inspiration to start sewing. currently mending a beloved shirt with some weird little embroidered bugs and stars to cover the damage :]
You’re so inspiring! This is the encouragement I needed to get into this hobby. I literally got a sewing machine from a buy nothing group today and am so excited to get started with this list😊
I love your list! One pattern maker I would love to throw out there is Sydney Graham! Her patterns are incredibly detailed and thoughtful and come with in depth video tutorials. Her vibe makes approaching sewing with zero previous knowledge accessible and fun!
I made the Helene Jeans without ever making on pair of trousers or anything wearable at all: Complete win! I changed my second pair to make it more of a carrot shape. This is my go to pattern. I made 5 pairs. One needs 8 hours of concentration. That’s all. Love it. Great pattern selection. I also made the Ora Dress in cupro. The finishes are stunning - better then bought dresses. I learned the burrito method by this (needed RUclips support though).
I was Shocked and excited when you showed the Ann Tilley pants! I am watching this video because I did a workshop on tailoring and alteration with Ann TODAY and wanted some pattern inspiration!! super cool loved this video :)
Thank you so much for this wonderful roundup!! You blew my mind introducing me to Roberts|Wood and I’m printing out the Drafters Grid Dress as I type this. Love your work, your style, your channel. Subscribed and binge watching.💕💫
I love all the patterns from PuffAndPencil! Very detailed instructions and they have drafted their patterns so you can switch between different types of sleeves for most of their tops/dresses :)
i have a sewing machine that i got years ago as a gift but have never used. this video inspired me to get it from the garage and see if i can get it working. thank you!
I feel compelled to comment on approximately one RUclips video per calendar year, but just watched all of this and *needed* to say thank you so much for this completely joyful and informative list of recommendations! Someone gave me an old (but still very functional) sewing machine not too long ago, so my goal for this winter (I’m in the northern hemisphere) is to teach myself to sew and begin to make my own clothes. I have a collection of vintage patterns, but I’ve been completely overwhelmed with where to start as I don’t know what’s realistic for a beginner. I’m definitely going to check out a lot of these, as I love being able to support independent creators. Your video made me so excited to get started! Thank you again. (And that’s my one comment for this year done!)
I stumbled across this video and oh my god. I learned how to sew when I was like 13 by my grandmother and then just left it behind for a long time. I’m now starting again, mostly trying to cosplay but my dream is to make my own clothes. I don’t know if the patterns you picked out are just so universal but I love the styles you picked so much, I think there was only like two I wouldn’t use or wear myself. So so so excited to try some of these out and challenge myself as well as lurking on the pattern makers websites you shared. Happy sewing and THANK YOU for sharing your enthusiasm and passion for sewing!!! It’s infectious 🦋🦋🦋
What a cute and informative video. I sew but loved seeing pattern companies that I haven't heard about and want to give them a try. Thanks for a great video!
Military is a great place to start sewing. All my stuff kept ripping, then started helping others out, now it’s the point that people everywhere come for me for mods because they don’t want to drive far to get stuff repaired. Had no idea I’d get into this hobby lol
I love the suggestions :) I need to replace my godawful Singer Start (I bought it in 2020 expecting to be furloughed and needing something to kill time but joke's on me because they furloughed almost every department BUT mine and gave us extra work. It's only just calmed down in early 2024 but now my house has so many projects taking priority) and find a machine that I don't want to yeet from the top of a nearby hill every time I break it out!! Once I get around to that I'll be coming back to look at these patterns. OMG the Roberts Wood ones make my heart flutter!
bahahaha i relate to the feeling of wanting to throw a sewing machine off a nearby hill. I really hope you get to find some calm & peace in your work department, but also you get lots of time to do projects that make you happy! Good luck on your machine search - I'm sure you'll find something awesome. RW is DIVINE!!!!
I’m in a sewing rut right now and this is helping me get out of it. Thank you for all the great pattern recommendations! Never thought I would be excited to sew a hood.
omg i can't believe i just found your channel! It's awesome. Thank you for the recommendation. You would think it's easy to find a good pattern but i had the most fun with the ones my pals recommended. Now idk which one I want to try first. Looking at your neat studio, i think i should clean up mine before getting another pattern :)
Years ago by now I inherited my grandma's sewing machine, but after some failed attempts at making clothes I left it to the side.. I've been getting the itch again to try it out and my first project will be the collage gathered top by matchy matchy sewing club! It looks quite easy to follow! In the meantime ive taken up knitting and crochet which i also hiiiiighly recommend to have as a creative hobby❤😃
I love all these patterns! I'm currently enrolled in a short fashion course and we get to learn making patterns from scratch and it's a really difficult skill to learn! I salute all these lovely pattern makers

omgggg it's such a coincidence to have this vid recommended the exact day I made something from scratch, entirely by hand! tbh, i used to sew clothes for my dolls as a child, but then... social media and phone addiction got to me. procrastination is the enemy, sometimes i think im wasting my time by not studying while sewing and feel guilty for doing a hobby. but it doesn't matter tho, i now keep reassuring myself that keeping myself engaged by doing something productive is MUCH better than just brainrot. sorry for rambling, love the video and the patterns!
Can I just say how much I appreciate the built-in captions? 💚
So true to all of those things. Being completely in control of the fabric you purchase, the patterns you use, the fit of the final garment, the style lines you like. You get a garment at the end that you love and no-one else has the same thing. It's complete control and I find it freeing.
Commenting this to push to more people! Sustainability, fulfillment, community, etc. EXACTLY WHAT EVERYONE NEEDS!!!!!!! LOVE THIS
so kind !!!! i couldn't agree more!!!!!!!
NGL the horsie microphone was the main reason I clicked on this video but now here I am finding myself inspired to start a sewing project today ✨
I have everything I need to start sewing, including patterns and fabric, but have been so intimidated to start for some reason!
Make mistakes, they can be a good laugh! ❤ You GOT THIS!
Make something very simple, an apron, a sack….just play with the machine…watch videos …it’s a whole big new world to explore…..just do it
@@kiarafrei9145 I just bought some fabric at the thrift store because of your comment! All of you are so sweet--I appreciate it
I love this!
0:17 me on my phone watching this while sewing😬
Sewing helped me with my skin picking and anxiety. Keeps my hands and brain busy.
havent finished watching the video yet but omg!!! this is exactly what i need ive been avoiding looking at my thrifted fabric stash for monthsssssss bc i cant decide what to do w any of it!! i cant wait to look at all of these patterns
none of these patterns are my style, but this has definitely fueled the "sew something. anything." type mood i'm in lately. yesterday i did some mending for the first time. i had a shirt and a pair of pants that both had a little hole and i darned them up and it worked great!
i also started actually sewing a project i cut out many moons ago. it's a shirt inspired by bernadette banner's mr darcy shirt, but with short sleeves because i didn't actually have enough fabric. i definitely have not optimized the construction but i'm pretty sure it's going to work in the end so that's all that matters lol
I would say I'm an intermediate sewer, but even learning just a few things at first has made me more sustainable with my fashion. I can mend and alter my clothes to make them last so much longer!
Thank you for wanting to stop my brain rot, and fulfilling my fashion needs!! Instant subscribe!!! ❤
you need to make a beginners guide for people interested in sewing! That would be awesome
great idea!!!
I was just telling a friend that I don’t want to start sewing. I’m a big believer of creating over consuming, but seeing seems so far out of my wheelhouse. This video changed my mind and I want to start sewing now!
now THAT's a valuable sewing resource 💋👨🍳
I just started my first pair of magic pants thanks to you! Thank you for inspiring me to get back into sewing ❤
That sounds like a lovely 3 days!! Aw I hope your project goes really well. Thank you for watching!
the unique modern and very cute alternative patterns BY ARTISTS are real real added value to this Video i need more of that!
Take care.
it's such a good feeling! you are absolutely right - there's so much to learn (how fun!) thank you for watching!
I enjoy your videos so much! Thanks for being a bright spot on the internet!
Girl, you are just toooo cool and very talented. Thanks for standing up.
YAY I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!! 4 bags!!! lets gooooooo
This was such pleasure to watch - thank you! I am definitely attempting to stop brain rot by sewing!
i have to be so honest i have never used an actual purchased pattern before. i've been sewing for upward of ten years and made a few clothes and i just kind of wing it tbh. i look up what the pattern shapes are supposed to look like or trace existing clothing pieces to create something different. it doesn't go well i don't recommend. don't be like me. i'm gonna give some of the advanced patterns in here a go because some of these sound absolutely delightful. got some cotton drill from spotlight and i'm gonna make some fun star crotch jean shorts !! love watching your videos to give me a burst of energy and inspiration to start sewing. currently mending a beloved shirt with some weird little embroidered bugs and stars to cover the damage :]
You’re so inspiring! This is the encouragement I needed to get into this hobby. I literally got a sewing machine from a buy nothing group today and am so excited to get started with this list😊
Can't wait to get into sewing. You're so wholesome, never change
yyayyyyyyy!!!!!! aw thank you
I love your list!
I've sewn in the past, your video inspires me to get started again! ☺
YAY!!!
Helens closet patters are excellent for beginners, size inclusive, cute, hackable and Helen is a delight. A++ would recommend 🙃
I am a sewist and I love your video. You’re so right and it’s nice to see young ppl online that see the value of these arts/skills.
I was Shocked and excited when you showed the Ann Tilley pants! I am watching this video because I did a workshop on tailoring and alteration with Ann TODAY and wanted some pattern inspiration!! super cool loved this video :)
I absolutely love the Twig and Tale patterns for easy instructions and easy-wear clothing.
love it!!
Do I know how to sew? No! But how satisfying is watching Carly sew! ❤
The horse-mic.... *chef's kiss*
i have a sewing machine that i got years ago as a gift but have never used. this video inspired me to get it from the garage and see if i can get it working. thank you!
yayyyyyyyy that's the best!!!!!
This is such a nice approach to learn sewing! It scratches my brain the right way haha I will start with the hood next week:)
aw i'm so glad!!!! good luck with the hood - it looks like such a cute project.
I’m new here. Wow your hair is absolutely stunning. Love the idea of using time in a more productive way
I feel compelled to comment on approximately one RUclips video per calendar year, but just watched all of this and *needed* to say thank you so much for this completely joyful and informative list of recommendations!
This was the perfect summary for me, I had no idea where to begin with so many options out there I wasn’t sure where to start.
The horse is such a nice addition 😊
I'm taking this video as a sign, I'll start sewing
YAYYYYY
I am learning to sew and this video is everything I wanted... THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!
YAYYYYYY!!!
Never thought I would be excited to sew a hood.
thank you! just got a toy sewing machine and it works, i will be trying out things and see if like sewing. love your vibes
omg i can't believe i just found your channel! It's awesome. Thank you for the recommendation. You would think it's easy to find a good pattern but i had the most fun with the ones my pals recommended. Now idk which one I want to try first. Looking at your neat studio, i think i should clean up mine before getting another pattern :)
aw thank you so much!!! it can be hard to find patterns that resonate! happy sewing
Great Video! I would have enjoyed seeing your finished projects to the patterns you made!
thank you so much!!! ah good idea!! (for next time :D )
I love all these patterns! I'm currently enrolled in a short fashion course and we get to learn making patterns from scratch and it's a really difficult skill to learn! I salute all these lovely pattern makers
