When I had my first baby, I was in a very poor situation. I would buy pieces of fabric for $1 from a store called Zears. I would make my baby clothes without sewing machine. Then I got the idea of buying clothes from the secondhand store for a few cents. I made out of a grownups sweatshirt, with zipper and sweatpants, and made my baby sweatshirt and jacket with a hoodie. Without making a pattern. I just cut the shapes by sight. I wish we were into taking pictures back then like we are now. I wanted to add to the point about thrifting a machine: It might be a good idea if you do some research about what to look for. Older machines were built to last, so if you can find someone who fixes up old machines, it can be a great investment. I found my Husqvarna SLE 6570 at a flea market for 10NOK (About $10), and it's one of the most solid, most sold machines ever in Norway. It took a while to find a workshop that could fix it for me, but I found a good sewing community that helped me find leads, and now I'm gonna have it fixed. It'll be fixed for a fraction of the cost vs when it was new, plus I'll have a good machine that will last me for several more years.
That is definitely true, everything was built to last years ago unfortunately now a days its plastic and its cheaper to go buy new again instead of fixing the item, that's if they make tge parts or even make it possible to fix the various machines or items. Because the companies want you to spend more money so they make sure there's no available way to fix whatever item it is.
@@lastchance6845 Yep! I hate that it's become normal to produce cheap plastic products that don't last. I want something reliable that can last many years before I need to replace it.

My mom learned to sew in Germany, on a Pfaff, at the Pfaff Warehouse! Can you imagine? She made me sit and watch her but I wasn't allowed to sew. My parents would buy me a cheap machine many times for my birthday and they were awful. I've had a fake Janome, White, a couple from JOAnns,Goodwill etc. I got upset with my new one, seemed to be called House/home? and went to WalMart. I bought a Brother for 170.00. Yay! Learning to sew my own clothes is my only (learning) goal for this year - SO excited about this series!! 🎉 I have a Juki TL-2010Q that I've only used for quilts, looking forward to using it more (I also have a Singer than can do buttonholes and zig-zag stitch, so I'm good to go)!
learning to sew this summer! Thank you for this video - it is surprisingly hard to find videos on this topic that take a general view, as opposed to focusing on a specific pattern or project. It's a bit overwhelming of a hobby when you are trying to first start.
I started out with curtains and drapes. But I love interior designs so it made me happy to see them. Now I’m starting my first skirt. I learned the different pleats but the drapes I previously made.
I really enjoy sewing by hand I I also have a sewing machine that I currently do not use 😢I would like to get back into the hobby of sewing both by hand and with machine and do nice, small projects in between school and work as a way to de stress and reconnect with hobbies that bring me peace 💓 thank you for sharing! Blessings
Excellent video for beginners. I learned to hem stitch by hand at 13 because I am short, and I had to hem my pants and skirts/dressed by hand. I learned by watching my mom, but she didn't really teach me (long story). When I finally graduated from college at 41, I bought a machine, that looking back, was obviously defective and had been a return: empty box, no manual. I struggled with that thing for years, but I sewed flannel robes for my spouse, daughter and one son. The youngest son got a wizard robe with lined sleeves and hood. I finally turned that junker in for an Anna by Babylock. Loved it. Learned to make simple dresses for my first granddaughter. Got a serger; what a learning curve! When the pandemic started, and I was sewing masks for family and friends, Anna jammed. Got a Brother, and it's been a journey of exploration and improvement. But I am still a novice, looking for teachers. Thanks for doing this.
Sounds like you’ve learned a ton of your sewing journey! It’s definitely hard to learn on your own- thats amazing, and sounds like you’ve made so many awesome things!
@@sewbakemake thank you. Sewing for love is very motivating: dresses for distant granddaughters (as in, living a 4-hour plane flight away), and masks for family and friends to keep them safe and healthy--all motivated me to improve my skills so that I could give the best to my loved ones. But really, it's people like you, who post instructive videos, that make this journey of discovery possible for me. So I thank you, and all the other RUclipsrs that I watch, for that.
@@sewbakemake My granddaughter (#1) and making masks during the pandemic were the primary movers on my journey. Again, I thank you for your videos. I wish I had had the internet back in '98 when I started this part of my journey, but it's here now.
If anyone is close to Easton, PA there’s still an OG Singer store that sells vintage machines and fixes them (if my memory serves me correctly.) Even if you don’t want to buy anything, it’s a little cool store. Their display outside will blow your mind. It’s very “old world.” Anyway, that store is located downtown by the circle on Northampton St.
Great video. I recently upgraded my sewing machine as someone advised getting a machine for the sewist you want to be, not the one you are now. One feature I would absolutely recommend is a top loading bobbin with a see-through cover. Makes life 100% easier.
Your video was very helpful. I had so many questions about sewing. I leaned how to sew when I was 18 and even managed to stitch myself a blouse for a saree. Feeling inspired to take it up as a hobby again. Thanks! The pants look great.!
Thank you so so so much for all these helpful tips! I decided to pick up sewing as a hobby this year because I have always wanted to create my own clothes and bought myself a machine. You broke everything down perfectly for a beginner like myself!!! I can't wait to watch your sewing series. New sub :)
Great explanation for starters! I recently started learning leatherworking and my first project was a backpack. I had no idea what I was doing, but I had so much fun, so I definitely agree with the statement to start with the project you are excited about!
Ooo I'd love to see more videos on your vintage sewing machine! Have 2 Singer 401A and 403 and there are not any videos out there of people using them to sew modern projects! Only how to fix them. I'd love to see more of that machine actually making things today. Thanks!
I use only vintage machines. Any machine can sew on woven fabrics, and any machine that has a zigzag or design cams (your Singer 400 series machines) can sew knits. I own a 401 and a 403 and they are really great for making clothes. @ShannonMakes (here on YT) uses only vintage machines, I think. (One of her favorites is a Singer 301 which is such a dandy machine. :-) She makes all kinds of stuff, but clothes are clothes, regardless of the era. Hope you've gotten a chance to use those awesome Singers!
Hello, I just bought my 3rd sewing machine but I really don't know how to sew clothes so thank you for your videos. I totally agree with you about the old bed sheets, just bleach them. My first sewing machine I made curtains, shower curtains, anything with a straight line. However my second one I made the totes, and zipper bags for everyone I knew 😂😂😂. Now I am ready to really learn how to sew and I WILL be starting on a SINGER HEAVY DUTY machine. I originally bought the Singer 3337 but after the reviews I decided to take it back and get the heavy duty one. Okay, thanks again for being my sewing BFF. I am so sick of asking everyone in Walmart if they sew, so I can ask them a question. 😂😂😂
Omg i have been following you for a couple months and finally decided to invest on sewing materials. I am looking forward to these series because I’ve always wanted to make my own clothes 🙈🙈
My husband bought me a 1959 Sears Kenmore that came with the tower. It is my pride and joy. At first I was like eww, but then once I got it into my house and started sewing with it, it is now my baby. He paid 25 dollars for it.😅 That is a steal for that machine.
I'm so glad I ran into your channel!!! I am taking my first sewing class this Wednesday. I am really excited about it! You gave a lot of great tips! Thanks!!
Thank you so much for making this series! I can't wait to get my machine and get started with you. You are so easy to follow and listen to, like being taught by a friend! I am a reseller, and have wanted to be able to remake clothes from things I find thrifting for the longest time!! 🎉🎉❤
Awesome thank you for this video! I've done sewing once in fashion class back @ high school wasn't good at it lol but now that I'm a stay at home mum looking for a hobby also I feel like I want to give it a go again. Will be following you x
Thank you for this. These tutorials will be perfect for me. So glad i came to RUclips, cuz all the people I asked about this were being extremely rude. Thank you for this
My mom gave me her old Kenmore sewing machine that has everything from when she got it, even the book! I had it for years before deciding I wanted to get serious about learning to sew so it was all gross from storage but i just opened it up, oiled it (with hair clipper oil), and it works perfect. The thing I was the most excited about was the fact that it has over 15 different stitches, so that makes everything so much easier♥︎. Yay mom! Oh, and also I found out I needed a measuring tape at 3 in the morning and didnt want to wait so I used my little 30 inch paper one as a template and made 2 out of masking tape.... they are a little ghetto looking but do the trick.
I love that when she said she is your sewing bff, ask me question, she literally means it she literally still commenting, im subbing to you! Thank you for the wonderful video, im so going to ask questions when i start❤
Just found your channel! You're a natural at teaching! I used to sew when I was younger and am trying to get back to it but it's a struggle. After watching this video, I'm thinking it might be because I'm using knits. Thank you for the detailed information you've given here and I can't wait to watch more of your videos!
Thank you so much!! Knits can be really frustrating to start with as they can be tricky to sew! They are easier to fit though, so there’s pros and cons. So happy you found the video helpful!
I teach sewing and agree with almost everything in your video! Great information! My repair shop would tell beginners to spend at least $300 on their first new beginner machine as the cheaper ones often can't open to be serviced. You literally have to throw them away instead of getting them adjusted.😢😢 😢
Thank you!! I actually had a great experience with my $200 brother machine! I think it really depends on the brand and model, but definitely spending as much as your budget allows is the best bet!
I sewed years ago but never traditional classes ever. Love your IG account including your gorgeous dresses!!! I have a great iron though!! T-fal!! And I agree about choosing a fun exciting project!!
Idk why but I had a suspicion you were from van or had at least lived there- confirmed! Thank you for the tip about the east van flea, I am just considering beginning this journey and am close enough to the city for that to be super helpful 💜
Haha yes! I lived there for almost 8 years! I moved away two years ago, but he might still be there! He was tucked away near the back end if I remember correctly, he’s always got at least a few sewing machines! Alternatively, if you find a used one that needs a tuneup, I know an amazing tech who fixes them up out of his house and can pass along his name!
I encourage anyone that is looking for their first sewing machine. Go to your local sewing machine place in your local town. Or you can probably go to Jo-Ann and probably talk to someone that is maybe a professional that can help you with your first sewing machine.
Just started following you and am so excited by your content as trying to get into sewing my own clothes although im not a complete beginner although i feel like one😊. Can i ask you what is your feeling on overlocker machines? Thank you❤
Aw so glad you’re here! If you sew quite a bit, I’d say an overlocker is a great investment. Theyre great for quickly finishing seams, and I love them for sewing knits!
I'm lucky enough to live near a craft supply thrift store (shout-out to Scraplanta Creative Reuse!) and they test any machines they get before putting them out for sale, so that's a decent source of something similar exists near you.
This was nice and straightforward and helpful. A lot of videos are loud and full of fluff or too happy and poppy, bubbly. So good job. I look forward to next videos.
I can’t wait for more videos in this series! I just started sewing - well, I’m cutting out my very first pattern now! Do you by chance remember what pattern you used for your first pair of trousers and the type of fabric you used? I’m in love with the design! Thank you so much!!
And sorry, I’m so slow with uploads as I have a toddler and a five year old! There are more videos coming, just hard finding the time to film and post!
That was informational. Can you do an indepth of useful info for sewing knits (stretchy fabric)? What are the things to watch out for, differences between sewing non stretchy vs stretchy fabric. Thankyou! Also sewing machines, which ones are more versatile for both fabric types.
I'm starting with a "clean girl" vintage vest pattern from McCalls, it's rated easy but it's not so easy 😅 learning a lot working it through and like you said the reward is unmatched! I've subscribed!
Thanks for subscribing!! Good luck with the vest! I find the big 5 patterns (McCalls, newlook, simplicity etc) have the worst instructions for beginners! Super vague and not easy to follow! But you’re right- you’ll learn a lot just by sewing it!! Indie sewing patterns are much more beginner friendly, so I definitely recommend using one of those for your next project!
@@sewbakemake yes, I printed two Chikafrik (I think that's Indie) patterns this week and cut them out, Lovelina top and Blair skirt. A lot simpler than the vest
That’s a great idea! I’ll try to add that onto my list of videos to make. I haven’t been able to find much time to make videos but hopefully will have more time for RUclips in the fall!!
I have a basic Brothers machine unfortunately I stopped my sewing journey once covid hit. I would like to get back into it but ive forgot what i need for it 😅or what goes where. These seems like a great timing to get back into.
One thing I forgot to mention, is that marketplace can be a great place to look for a machine! Just make sure to try it out with some scrap fabric and make an assessment on how it works before bringing it home!
@sewbakemake ❤ your channel! I scored a Babylock Jubilant from FB Marketplace for $150 and paid $125 for a tuneup.

Just wanted to add that sewing is not so much all about sewing, but a lot of measuring and cutting.
Yes, that and pressing! 😅

Thank you so much for watching! I love thrifting for fabric and still use thrifted materials regularly! So excited for you to start, good luck on your first projects!
Wow you are a natural as your skill level is so high for only beginning you sewing journey 5 years ago. You have skills for real Candice and should be proud 👍👗❤️I agree that you don’t really need a lot to get started but I sure do love the notions wall when I go to the fabric shop, just a little treat will so sometimes.
Thank you so much, so kind of you to say!! I think I also lucked out in that I started during Covid and had a lot of free time to practice and sew a lot of garments! And yes- totally- I love notions and tools too!
I can’t wait for the series.Your really great at explaining things ❤
Thank you so much!! 🥹🥹 I’m hoping to have the next one uploaded soon!
I just ordered my first machine and im going to start by making my 1 year old daughter a dress! I'm excited! Thank you for this video!
Yay I’m so excited for you to start!! Good luck with the dress! 🩷
I make my own dresses and skirts because its hard finding modest clothing in stores.
That’s great!!
Hijabi here, I'm looking into sewing for the same reason! It's so hard to find modest AND stylish pieces, and when you do it's expensive!
I am really happy bcs there is people like tou now 💓i am asking allah to make youu Muslim to win 🤲🏻
Same reason I want to learn now!
This is exactly why I want to learn!
Yay, I’m so excited for you!! Sewing clothes is just the best 😊😊 Jukis are amazing machines!
I am starting sewing classes next week, and finding a sewing machine is really stressing me out! Thanks for some tips 🙂
Yay that’s so exciting!! Don’t stress too much about picking a machine- you can always upgrade if you feel the need to later on!
learning to sew this summer! Thank you for this video - it is surprisingly hard to find videos on this topic that take a general view, as opposed to focusing on a specific pattern or project. It's a bit overwhelming of a hobby when you are trying to first start.
Completely agree- it is overwhelming! Thank you for watching!! Good luck with your first projects! 😊😊
Found you on Tik Tok. I'm so excited for the next video. I bought a sewing machine two months ago and can't wait to start using it.
So glad you’re here!! Excited for you to start your sewing journey!
🥰@@sewbakemake
I started out with curtains and drapes. But I love interior designs so it made me happy to see them. Now I’m starting my first skirt. I learned the different pleats but the drapes I previously made.
That’s awesome! You got this!
Blessings
Sewing is such a great hobby for de-stressing!!
Totally agree with that, once you know you like sewing, I absolutely recommend buying the best your budget allows!
Your video was very helpful. I had so many questions about sewing. I leaned how to sew when I was 18 and even managed to stitch myself a blouse for a saree. Feeling inspired to take it up as a hobby again. Thanks! The pants look great.!
Thank you so much! I hope you pick it up again!
Thank you so so so much for all these helpful tips! I decided to pick up sewing as a hobby this year because I have always wanted to create my own clothes and bought myself a machine. You broke everything down perfectly for a beginner like myself!!! I can't wait to watch your sewing series. New sub :)
Thank you so much for the kind words!! I’m hoping to have the next episode up soon! Thanks for watching ❤❤❤
Great explanation for starters! I recently started learning leatherworking and my first project was a backpack. I had no idea what I was doing, but I had so much fun, so I definitely agree with the statement to start with the project you are excited about!
That’s amazing- I’d love to learn leather working one day! Thanks so much for watching! 😊😊
Now this is the kind of basics I was looking for!
Thanks so much for watching!!
Cant wait for more of this content!
🥰🥰 Thanks so much for watching!!
Ooo I'd love to see more videos on your vintage sewing machine! Have 2 Singer 401A and 403 and there are not any videos out there of people using them to sew modern projects! Only how to fix them. I'd love to see more of that machine actually making things today. Thanks!
Unfortunately I don’t have that machine anymore! I sold it when I upgraded my machine a little while ago!
So exciting! Sewing your own clothes is so much fun!! You’ll love it!
Omg i have been following you for a couple months and finally decided to invest on sewing materials. I am looking forward to these series because I’ve always wanted to make my own clothes 🙈🙈
Yay so excited for you to start!! 😊🙌
Thanks!!
So exciting!! I hope you love it!!
Yes! I agree! I started sewing by making a few craft items that I absolutely was not excited about and I lost the zest I had for learning how to sew.
I sewed a few bibs and then jumped right into garments and never looked back!
Thank you so much for making this series! I can't wait to get my machine and get started with you. You are so easy to follow and listen to, like being taught by a friend! I am a reseller, and have wanted to be able to remake clothes from things I find thrifting for the longest time!! 🎉🎉❤
Aw this comment made my day- thank you so much! I’ve been pretty slow with uploads as I have two little ones but there will be more coming!!
Awesome thank you for this video! I've done sewing once in fashion class back @ high school wasn't good at it lol but now that I'm a stay at home mum looking for a hobby also I feel like I want to give it a go again. Will be following you x
Thanks for following along!! I also took one sewing class in highschool but did not like it, but I loved it as soon as I started sewing as an adult!
Thank you for this. These tutorials will be perfect for me. So glad i came to RUclips, cuz all the people I asked about this were being extremely rude. Thank you for this
Yea for some reason people irl are very short tempered when it comes to beginners asking questions about sewing.. so glad for youtube!
That’s unfortunate! It’s hard to learn completely on your own! Thanks so much for watching!
That’s amazing!!! And also making your own measuring tape is genius!!
@@sewbakemake Well, IDK about genius, but what is it they say? Being broke is the springboard of invention? Yeah, I think... something like that🤭🤭🤭
Thank you so much for the amount of detail you included in this video. I'm so excited to start ❤
Glad it was helpful!😊😊
Thank you so much for this video! I'm a teen girl who wants to sew most if not all of my clothes so I will definitely be following!❤
Thank you so much for following along! So excited for you to start sewing your own clothes- it’s such a great hobby and skill to have! 🩷
Glass pins are a great idea! ❤️
Wow! It was an incredible amount of great information delivered on this video! Thank you ❤
Thank you so much for watching!! ☺️☺️
Just got my sewing machine and excited to start learning! Thank you for making this series!
So excited for you! You are so welcome!
Love the series and although i’m not a beginner I still found these tips very helpful and informative ❤❤. Thank you
Thank you so much! I’m so glad to hear that!
You do such a lovely job of breaking everything down. :)
Thank you so much, that’s so great to hear 🥹
Great information. Good luck with your sewing series.
Thank you so much!!
Great video. I'd like to add that first people should try their luck at hand sewing. Maybe not making your own clothes but mending and easy projects.
I found your video from Insta and you noticed my comment! Thankyou, your channel help me somuchhhh, and give me full energy to learn sewing. xo
I’m so glad you’re here!! And so excited for you to start sewing! ❤️
I love that when she said she is your sewing bff, ask me question, she literally means it she literally still commenting, im subbing to you! Thank you for the wonderful video, im so going to ask questions when i start❤
Yes! I totally meant it! As long as I can keep up, I’ll try to answer questions in the comments! 😊
Great explanation. Positive and light vibe. Loved it . Thanks❤!
Thank you so much for watching!!
i really want to learn to sew and i want my first pattern to be a kitchen apron!! i feel like i can make lots of them to give as gifts :)
Aprons are so fun!! I just posted a reel with an apron I made yesterday 😊😊
Thank you so much ❤️❤️!! I agree, a good iron makes sewing much more enjoyable for sure!!
Glad I found this video. Can't wait to start sewing
So excited for you to start!
Thank you for your sewing machine tools ideas l need that as l am about to show my Artistic sewing Styles and Designs with my Hands.
I'm along for the sewing ride, appreciate you🧵✅
New videos coming in the fall! I’m on a bit of a summer break with the kids! Thanks for following along!!
@@sewbakemake Understandable, see you then❤️🙏🏽
Yeah!!! i am so glad I found you. I love this series, great idea. I totally need sew alongs.
Yay! Thank you!
Thanx for all the tips and tricks. I am going to walk the path of sewing with you here from south africa
Thank you for watching and following along!!
Or you can probably go to Jo-Ann and probably talk to someone that is maybe a professional that can help you with your first sewing machine.
you’re literally my comfort person i love you *luxdups* !
True! I forgot about places like that- they’re great! I used to have a something similar near me in Vancouver but have moved to another province now.
Just subscribed ,i have been having the urge to learn how to sew and im glad i found your videos thanks ,cant wait to learn more
Thanks for subscribing! 🫶
I am glad I found an easy to relate to video guide for beginners 🎉.
I'm so glad you found it helpful!
This was nice and straightforward and helpful. A lot of videos are loud and full of fluff or too happy and poppy, bubbly. So good job. I look forward to next videos.
Thank you so much, I am so glad you liked the video and am so happy to get feedback like this 🥰
Thanks a lot for the video! It's really breaking everything down nicely for complete beginners !
Thank you so much, so glad it was helpful!
I startend with fixing the clothing I had and not quiet liked and shortening my pants. 😊
That’s a great way to start!
Great video. Thank you!
I can’t wait for more videos in this series! I just started sewing - well, I’m cutting out my very first pattern now! Do you by chance remember what pattern you used for your first pair of trousers and the type of fabric you used? I’m in love with the design! Thank you so much!!
Yes! Sorry I didn’t put it in the description, they’re the Seamwork Marrett pants!
And sorry, I’m so slow with uploads as I have a toddler and a five year old! There are more videos coming, just hard finding the time to film and post!
@@sewbakemake No worries! Life happens! I just appreciate that you make these videos when you have the time! :D
These videos are fantastically made and informative!
Thank you so much! This made my day 😊😊
So true are a sewist we think we can do away of some of the listed Items you mentioned, I will actually tell new bies never to skip any of them
That was informational.
Thank you so much !
Ty for this queen 😭🤍 I’m so excited to start
So excited for you!! 😊😊
Thank you for this video. I love those pants you had on. Excited to start.
You are so welcome! Happy sewing!!
Could you please do a video on those simple beginner a baby bibs? I’m expecting my first baby soon and I think it would be a great starter project!!
Great video, lots of useful tips! I would like to know how to thread a machine and the whole bobbin thing 😅😅
Thanks Lesley!! ❤️ That’s coming next!! Trying to find time to get it done!! Thanks for watching and supporting 💕💕
@@sewbakemake ah, great! Looking forward to following the series
