Sewing TWO Costumes Inspired by "Over The Garden Wall" (with a vintage twist)

- It is FINALLY TIME that I make some costumes from my most-favorite, sUPeR WHOLESOME, masterpiece that is "Over the Garden Wall".
For this project, I used the designs of an artist I found on Ye Olde Instagram to give Greg & Wirt's outfits a little 'vintage twist'. Even though 'Sewing Mercury' is totally also in retrograde, and I swore at my sewing machine more times than I can count, I'm glad I finally did it, hahahaha.
I hope you guys enjoy and get some cozy, autumn-time feels.

Still accurate. 😂
One of the things I adore about Rachel is that, while she still keeps up with the ~aesthetic~ she is also so real: we see her wearing pants and slippers under the skirts, we see the mess sewing leaves behind in the living room, kittens and doggos doing whatever they please, etc.
Idk man, it just brings me SO much joy to see someone so candid. She is such a breath of fresh air 💙

I...I don’t hate those overalls? Like sure the fabric sucked to sew but they look so flattering on you. ??? I DUNNO.
Thought the same ! 🤔
The pants in them look nice, but the darts on the bodice stick out too much and look like weird nipples 😂
I think they're super cute and turned out great.
That’s why I love / hate fashion, if something looks on amazing on us and we don’t think so that’s just how it is! She looked good
I can’t really explain it well, but her energy just makes me feel so.... at home??? I feel cozy and warm 🥺
Rachel's outfits while making stuff is goals *chef's kiss*. When I'm sewing I look like if a mystic and a teenage boy merged
HAHAHA honestly I'm shifting towards that aesthetic, the 'cute' clothes usually get replaced with PJ pants and a sweatshirt I haven't washed in a month 💃
Doing better than me. I sew in my pjs.
I usually end up sewing in my undies from having to try things on so much 😅
Plus how she always looks so elegant. I look like a builder when cutting pattern pieces if you know what I mean 😉
I look like a drained podling... Especially when the needle breaks 😿
Fun fact: That wee pink and purple kettle comes from a children’s tea set (which is probably obvious) EXCEPT that the entire set is actually food safe!! Which means kids can have real tea for their tea parties ☕️🥺

Shit, I had real tea in all my tea sets in the 90s. This explains many things...
Yes! I just bought this set for my kiddos! And as a bonus, it’s made from recycled milk jugs!
This made me happy, I hope you have a good day!

Running out of bobbin thread is THE WORST. I demand an alert system!
Depending on your sewing machine there is now such a thing. On higher end computerized machines have a low bobbin indicator.
Some machines have it's so that you not only load the bobbin in from the top, but then the cover you put over that is clear, so you just have to move your fabric and glance and you can see how much thread you have left! I feel like that should be universal.
I'm forever grateful that my sewing machine tells me when the bobbin is about to run out, such a lifesaver
I technically have that on mine. But, if you're sewing fast and dont stop (used to commercial machines) they wont tell you till you stop sewing fully, then itll beep.
@@allisonreader8846 My 1952 Featherweight makes a distinct change in sound when the bobbin runs out. From a normal hum to a "chunking" sound as it stitches. I seldom go more than a couple of inches before I realize.
I've got a handstand story for your Rachel. When I was seven, I was playing in my back yard. I had been doing handstands and trying--with very limited success--to walk on my hands. Just as my neighbor went out her back door to walk to her car with her baby in her arms, I fell over onto my back in a similar way that you described at 18:14. Although I landed safely on the soft grass, I somehow managed to break one finger and badly sprain another before I came crashing down. I screamed so loudly that my neighbor almost dropped her baby. And then both I and the baby started crying. The entire scene was quite dramatic, as you may imagine.
rewatching this now that I've FINALLY seen over the garden wall and can fully appreciate
My son said during the reveal with the cape, “is she Wonder Woman?” And my daughter said, “is she a witch for real?” She seemed a bit disappointed when I said no.
Edited to add, during your outro my son says in a hushed voice, “she is a witch!” Not sure what made him come to that conclusion, but I cackled.
Well done in the outfits. Super cute!
As an American living in Australia where it is currently spring and the only real seasons are "hot" and "not hot" this is giving me all the Fall time feels that I need. Also, the bobbin running out was the most relatable content I've ever seen...
As an Australian, I’m just jealous that such a lovely autumn exists. I’m in Queensland, and it’s already hot. We barely even have a winter. Also, we barely have Halloween, and this makes me very sad.
you can get it in nsw but with continual ✨rain✨

There is absolutely nothing worse than running out of bobbin thread. Especially when working on a fabric you hate.
Her deep sigh of despair upon realisation was so relatable.

YES
The more days it takes you to complete a project, the most awesome outfits we can see in a single video, so win/win.
How to make a cone for future hat endeavors:
1. Draw a circle on the material with radius equal to the length you want the side of the hat to be from tip to base (this will be a bit more than the desired height, because right triangles and stuff)
2. Using a flexible measuring tape (vs. a stiff ruler) measure out the desired circumference of the base against the circumference of the circle, and mark the two endpoints.
3. Draw straight lines from the center to each of the two marked points to form something that looks like a pie slice in your circle. At this point we can check to see if we're on the right track towards getting the shape we want. If you're aiming for a tall, skinny cone, this will probably be a fairly large slice. If you've been trying to make a wide, flat one, the slice should conversely be small.
4. Cut out the circle and cut out the marked "pie slice." The remainder of the pie turns into the cone.
5. Line up and attach the two straight edges left behind from the slice.
This gives a cone with a perfectly pointed top and a nice level base!

Hearing “they’re just circle skirts for your neck” blew my mind. Completely. I now think I understand how to make capes
Secret tunne- I mean... SECRET PANTS!!!
First we had butt capes, now we have neck skirts. Truly a wonderful time to be alive. TuT
I am honored to know you a little bit better.
I love how you just exude the same energies as whatever character you're dressed as. You got Wirt's awkward young teen aura very clearly, and then Greg's playful fidgety small child-ness. I'm always impressed!
The overalls are a learning experience, I've been there with the twisting legs. If you don't cut the legs EXACTLY ON THE GRAIN, like, EXACTLY, they twist like that. Supremely frustrating. They don't look bad considering that though! I think the fact they're loose rlly helps.
thanks for that, I always have the same problem.
Did you KNOW that the reason so many cats (and dogs, horses, etc.) have socks and white tail tips and noses is cause when they were being “printed” they ran out of ink and the feet, tail tips, and noses are the last things to be coloured in??

I'm sure this is correct. Thank you for the info.

I would pay good money to see a live-action OTGW where you costume the entire cast. Bonus points if every role is played by *you.* And that's a Rock Fact!
Some unsolicited quick and dirty cone pattern advice: tie a pencil to a piece of string the height you want the cone to stand (add any seam allowances), then pin the other end of the string in place (tip of the cone) against an edge of your paper, then using the pencil on a string like a giant compass (you know, the thing that holds the pencil on one side and has a spike of doom on the other from your elementary school geometry set) and draw the curve, then get the sewing tape and measure out the circumference you want the finished cone to be (presumably your head measurement) plus seam allowances, along the curved line, then draw a straight line from there back to where your pin is stuck in. We use this trick in the armour shop all the time because nobody ever makes a compass big enough for making circles for stuff like viking round shields!
armour shop?!? that sounds,, so epic
It's a lot of fun, actually. Banging on metal is quite therapeutic. We do both battle armour and fantasy armour. The advantages of metal over fabric include that it can hold its own shape and that you can make 3D shapes from a flat piece, metal does stretch if you bang it enough :) However, untreated fabric edges generally can't cut you, and I only need hearing protection while sewing if I'm having a particularly screamy day :D

Just a little pattern cutting tip. Normally, you're supposed to cut the pattern pieces in the same direction. Your issue with the pant might be because you've turn the pattern for the back or front leg. In the end, the result is super cute 😊❤ love your videos
"Cloaks are circle skirts -- but for your neck." How insightful of you Rachel!😃👍
Rachael, you should remake the overalls in a better fabric, because they are super cute on you!

Rachel: Autumnal vibes!
Me, an Australian who's never left the country and in the midst of classic spring weather: Yesss it's so autumn!!
Big mood. I don’t think northern hemisphere folks understand how strange it is to have the vibes of everything you watch turn to ‘autumnal! Cozy! The thing that could have redeemed that fabric for the overalls is cutting the pattern pieces on the correct grain and ironing the seams between each step! Other than that, curtains sometimes suck :C
I wanted to add they can be made of fiberglass, which is very itchy as a garment.
Rachel, you’re such an amazing person. I know this is just another nice cozy video, but sometimes I have moments while watching your content where I just freakin tear up because you’re so sweet, and talented, and your videos really feel like home. I only discovered your channel (and the whole world of vintage fashion, cosplay, sewing, etc. as a result) about a year and a half ago, but it’s already made a huge difference in my lifestyle and my confidence. I hope you know that, besides your videos being adorable and really funny, you’re changing viewers attitudes about themselves and just bringing us some much needed joy and acceptance.
Anyway, sorry to put a sappy rant on one of your videos yet again, but seriously, thank you for being such a genuine and welcoming introduction to this community!
Fabrics like that are EVIL!!! Literally the only way I’ve found to deal with it is to zigzag the edges before I start sewing! Even fray check can’t defeat that fray!!! You coped wonderfully and the end results are very cute indeed!
I hate it too, I had to use a similar linen not long ago on lampshades and the fray upon trying to remove the edge allowance tape... Almost ruined the whole thing. And I had THREE to make. The saddest part is it cost £85 per metre 😖 you'd think for that price is wouldn't fall to bits
If the finished garment can be washed, (spray)starch helps a lot. Especially with natural fibers, but to some degree even with synthetics.
I either add a generous amount of starch, when I prewash the fabric and then dry it laying flat or spraystarch all around the edges and possibly, where the darts and other details go. It makes the fabric nice and stiff and manageable and to some degree prevents fraying and stretching as well, since the starch has a glue like effect, if you use enough of it.
Pro tip: get the most heavy duty starch, you can find, since most formulations are meant, to only give a light hold.
P.S. in a pinch, cheap hairspray works as well ;-)
I've found linen tablecloths at Savers occasionally - several yards for under $10 is well worth it.
Have to ask- are you pressing everything after each step? Like, sew seam, press it open, then press it however you want it for finishing the seam. Sew the seam finished. Press again.
I know it’s a lot of pressing, but really- pressing is 50% of sewing. 50% of good sewing, anyway. And I get being lazy and being like “do I really have to? Can’t I just skip this?” But yes, you do really have to, and no, you can’t skip pressing.
I also because it looks like a lot of my early sewing work, before I learned how dang important pressing actually is. Also- tip: when cutting notches into fabric, it’s best to cut the triangles to the outside. It really helps if you’ve got a very fraying type of fabric. Or, you could mark them with pen, or even thread notch them. Evelyn Wood has a great recent video about notches, how to do them, and what they’re for. And a whole bunch of other important sewing tips that definitely don’t come on the pattern instructions.
Pressing and overstitching are things I’ve learned you can’t really sew without.
Blerg I hate the outside notches though I alway forget and only do half
Yeah I thought those pants would of been ok if she pressed the side seams open.
I have my ironing board positioned right behind my sewing area so I can just swivel and press. Works wonderfully! I honestly think sewing without pressing is a lot harder.
@@Tesrob yeah, I’m also pretty awful with that sometimes. You just get to cutting, and have a brain fart, and cut right through where your notches were supposed to be. Which is usually when I’ll pull out the pen to mark them instead.
I would also DIE to see in actual person, a squirrel inside a pumpkin, like that's it's little house.😍
Me since I started sewing things. Visiting a friend, what I say: "oh, you got a new curtains, they look really nice" - what I really think "I could sew a nice skirt out of this". Other day sitting with my aunt sipping coffee, what I say "that's a nice tablecloth" - what I really think: "I could sew a nice vest out of this...." ... 😅 🙃
Same! At least if I'm sitting AND crafting, then I am a lump that moves slightly.

Me: *sees title of Rachel’s latest video. Looks up at husband*
Also Me: Well... bye *runs to watch video.
Note: It’s possible your pants looked crinkly like that because the fabric may not have been on grain when you started (likely a flaw introduced when the curtains were initially sewn). It’s a super easy fix. I recommend National Sewing Circle or Jasmine Loveit’s tutorials on the subject. As a bonus, both tutorials are only about 5min long, which is great for me, because ain’t no time for dat.

Try using a longer stitch on fabrics like that , iron your seams right after finishing , it helps set the stitching and will help you with pattern placement

Yessss 🙏❤️❤️❤️
Cute and spooky at the same time. 💕🎃💕
Ran out of bobbin thread once while rushing a train of seams. Oops.
After that all my bobbin thread was always off white. I'd buy two or three 1200 yard spools at one time. Then fill at least 8 bobbins before doing anything else.
Extra thread on bobbins is useful for my hand sewing kit. So I no longer hesitate to put in a bobbin if I suspect I won't have enough thread for the project. Which results in more practicing hand sewing because I have several bobbins with just a couple yards of thread. And I also do most of my basting stitches by hand - I find them much easier and faster to unpick.
The squirrels got my pumpkins too! I even sprayed them with a pepper/water mixture and hairspray to try and deter them but the little bastards feasted regardless 😂
Every time Frodo pops up in a video it makes me happy inside. He is such a pretty dog.
Listening to this while working on a Harley Quinn cosplay is honestly the best, because it’s like we’re sewing together! Except your decisions are making your life easier (using pre-existing skirt lining) and mine are making my life harder (attaching 900m of ribbon to a jacket)
