- HAPPY HALLOWEEEEN! Here is the project that I've been wanting to tackle for, oh I don't know, 20ish years?
I never thought I had enough skill to take this on, but I'm so glad I finally just DID IT. This week was full of hand-sewing, decision-changing, and candy-eatin', but finally I finished it, so I hope you guys like it!!
I love you all!!

The fact that all these vintage RUclipsrs are friends that call each other for tips and help soothes something inside me.
it's because it's extremely cliquey, you don't get help if you're super small
I agree! It would actually be a great video if Rachel did something with Abby (for example) teacher+apprentice style!
@Lotte oh nice :) I know that Bernadette Banner only reacts and reads comments for the first 24 hours after posting, and those 24 hours usually are early access for Patreons, so she's never answered me before :P
@@anjanunnenmacher344 I sincerely don’t think that’s the case, if the bigger ones don’t respond it’s generally because they legitimately physically can’t respond to every single question or request for assistance, but in my (admittedly small) experience, they still do their level best when they can. (Constance Mackenzie responded to something I sent her once and I was like HOLY SHIT. I HAVE BEEN TOUCHED BY GREATNESS)
@@anjanunnenmacher344 thats void for many people posting here: i would watch your videos, but you have none

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 it's like a damn USB plug
Ok, the edit made me snort out my drink 😂 (Also, I know I’ve already told you this, but you did such an amazing job! You look beautiful and the fit is lovely and you should be so proud of yourself! This type of sewing project with this type of deadline is *not* easy, and that doesn’t include editing the video. I’m so impressed by you! ❤️)
@@AbbyCox I need someone to give me love like this lol.
I wish I was friends with you guys.
Rachel a little costumer cheat. You can buy hook and eye tape by the yard on Amazon. Makes life easier

-Rachel Masky, 2020.
Rachel, I've been Sewing for 20 years and recently graduated from college with a degree in costume design. I had a really rough summer after graduation and I felt little motivation or love for sewing anymore (depression lol). A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled across your channel and started binge watching! The best part is, I HAVE STARTED SEWING FOR FUN AGAIN. It's been years since I've made something for myself and I have several projects in my queue. ❤️ I can't thank you enough for these inspiring and entertaining videos.
This dress is beautiful by the way! It looks gorgeous even if it is not an exact replica of the movie. 😍
Due to Covid, I have been spending WAY too much time on RUclips & have started following ALOT of CosTubers !!! There as SO many !!! And since my mood/time/ & interests varies - I think there is one for every whim !!!! DO look around, much fun to be had ! ;) (And, knowledge, too!)
P.S. start with @AbbyCox & her "Risky Business" homage...
Same! Instead of buying fabric from the store tho, I've been buying 2nd hand sheets like she did for one of her dresses. Much cheaper. And you get to feel.how the fabric is going to be after a few washes.
When snow is provided so you can do a movie accurate reveal...
Hey
Seriously !
I would kill for snow in October.
As it turns out, my favorite month was ruined by 90F days FOR THE ENTIRETY OF THE MONTH and we may have a hurrican't this weekend.
WTF, Global Warming?? I want the October that was promised to me!
Beautiful dress, Rachael. You nailed the back! Funny, that's also the dress I remember most from the movie.
@@cleoharper1842 that hurricane though. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
@@Anna-yr6us Thankfully it never arrived
As someone who has never used fabric marker, I assumed something with "fabric" in the name would work well on fabric instead of bleeding almost as wide as the stripe Rachel drew, lol.
As somebody who has painted a fair amount of things with fabric I can atest to the fact that they are snobish as all hell with the tipe of fabric you paint them on.
Just in case somebody needs to know for some reason: they usually work really well on thin cotton fabric.
Love the username, btw.
The "If you don't think you're qualified to do something, f-ing do it anyways...... Unless you're like... A doctor" made me snort so hard

Agreed!😁👍🍻
you trying to hand draw on the stripes is just like me hand embroidering an entire cloak... day thirty-something and i've gotten very good at not stabbing myself with a needle but i also have the barest grip on my sanity ever.
Edit: rewatched this video cus i watched sleepy hollow again. yes i did finish the cloak! it's a cosplay of the creature you play as from the video game Journey (highly reccomend). all the gold symbols and stripes I embroidered by hand as I didnt have access to an embroidery machine (I have since gottem one, speeds the proccess up alot even if its a littl finniky at times). I wear it as a coat in winter as well because i put too much work into it to simply wear at the occasional convention. it took me just over a year to complete, never underestimate how long stitching by hand takes, expeciallydecorative ones.
did you finish it?
As someone hand embroidering an entire cloak.... don't hand embroider an entire cloak unless you are irredeemably masochistic and insane.
A SAINT
sooo want to know if you finished :)
Have yo finished the cloak?
I used to have blue hair, and I have a “quirky” sense of style, if that’s what you want to call it, and I was once in Michaels near Halloween. There was a sweet older couple, and they told me they loved my costume.. I was not wearing one. But I thanked them because they were so nice. So I feel your pain
Yep.
Halloween is one of those times I can wear whatever I want and get compliments. 😏🎃
I had that exact same experience at a store the day before Halloween. I had just come out of an interview and I wore my favorite “nicely dressed” outfit which was a bright pink vintage style dress.
I have often been told that people like my "costume" when I am just wearing my everyday clothing. That being said, the very first "look" in this video is right up my proverbial alley.
Rachel: "Why is my house an actual cave?"
It's not a cave, it's a hobbit hole.

That wig gave me a few ideas of other characters you could recreate.
Alice in wonderland- historically accurate
Elizabeth Swann- Pirates of the Caribbean
Edith- Crimson Peak
Josette- Dark Shadows
Omg the whole Crimson Peak wardrobe is just immaculate I love
Crimson Peak is one of my favorite movies, I'd LOVE to see some costumes from that!
I've never gotten to see it, but I have stared at the costumes for an unhealthy amount of hours and Lucille's red dress it just ✨CHEF'S KISS✨
Mina Murray's costumes in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), I would love to see Rachel recreate one of them
I'd like to see Johanna from Sweeney Todd too!
My six-year-old son was watching with me, and when you were putting it all together at the end with make-up and everything, he said, " Wow, it's like she's changing her universe!" ❤❤❤
Ohh I like that. Yes glamour magic!
That's super cute!🥰
Hooray for observation & insight.
I about died when she went “The frick did I cut this with? A chisel and hammer? Did I gnaw at it like a hamster?” 😂

By drawing the stripes on BEFORE you sew it, means you will have the same issues as if you had just bought striped fabric.. oh thank god she didn’t!
I never thought of that! So relieved she didn't do that, it would have been so much wasted time!
yeah, I thought her friend meant to draw the stripes on after the garment was sewn
Exactly what I was thinking lol 😭 can you imagine finding that out the hard way
@@dannahbanana11235 would be a mice set up for comedy though
I love period clothes, I've been sewing on and off for over fifty years, I still have many of my patterns that I purchased in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. I discovered the trend for vintage patterns and have purchased some from the 20s, 30, and fifties, and I'm having so much fun with them. Now i'm also sewing children's clothing so I can use up some of the excess fabric I've accumulated over the years and donate to charities. Looking forward to following you.
how cool is that!
That's incredible!!! Thanks for sharing. You'd get along with my gma. 🥰
Rachel, you did such a fantastic job on this dress. I think deciding NOT to hand draw the stripes was good for your mental state (and probably Nick’s). The wig and makeup completed the look. Great job!
Also, the review of past work was completely relatable. While I never had the exact same thought, I have had the same energy as “Did I gnaw at it like a hamster?” This made me guffaw in recognition!

@@gentlesandladymen 😅 my selfie game is...questionable at times
Frodo needs a matching tie with the dress as well
I'm pretty sure that little green stripe is ageing and bleeding from the magicmarker - cuz that's my experience with drawing on fabric :S always end up with a yellow or green "shadow" outline
I was between that or to prevent moiré
I agree. As soon as she said green, I was like it was the marker.
@@neenmach yeah but now I have studied the dress a bit amd it seems like only everyother stribe has the green outline which made me doubt myself cuz that seems intentional on a whole other level 🤪😄
It's like that Burger King burger with black buns in the US. The dye is really an incredibly dark green and the way you find out is disturbing.
the plaque that describes the dress states that a small green highlight was on either side of every stripe... my best guess is the fear that the stripes might do that weird wonky thing on screens and look bad, so the green was intentional. orrr stops it from bleeding maybe? or was her guide?
Black and white stripes were Tim Burton’s signature in all his movies. Like looking for Alfred Hitchcock’s cameo split second appearance in all his movies. Other directors have their personal thing. Fun to figure out in movies. I did love that dress too. Like icing on his cake of A movie.😊.
That dress reminds me of Beetlejuice's suit - when you look at the back of the film's dress it even looks like the tails of his jacket.
Speaking as someone who worked at Joann's for several years, I can indeed confirm that your coupon theory is accurate
Yes, I don't purchase anything without a coupon or it being on sale.
OOOOOOOOOH
I work at Michael's and same. Sometimes I'll just go ahead and pull up the coupon on my phone and scan it for customers. We're not reeeallly supposed to do that but ain't nobody stopping me lol
True! Though their prices on lion brand yarn is hard to beat
@ThinWhiteAxe the micheals by me actually just print off the coupons and scan it for everyone. I think it was the managers idea 😂
I'm so glad you went for the striped fabric. I thought, "How is she not going to die from sharpie fumes?!" The smell of sharpies for some reason makes me ill, so I am very happy you found a way to just use the fabric you first intended. The gown came out so fun and fanciful, I love it. I am a retired clothing designer, and I can tell you I have never accomplished a gown like that in five days, even when I was working for a theater making costumes. Bravo, bravo, if I had found someone with your abilities, back in those days, I would have hired you on the spot.
When I saw the amount of fabric that would have to be sharpied, I was ready to call up the whole hell to help her.
I’ve just found her and now I can’t stop watching all of her videos ahhh I love this makes my heart so happy
💖💖
same!!!!
re pricing: look out for local small fabric shops!! they aren't everywhere but non-chain fabric stores are generally way cheaper if u can find em! joannes has some price fixing bs goin on
Sadly, Joann basically killed our local fabric stores. There's one, but it's specializes in quilting cotton and other quilt stuff pretty much exclusively. So if you want actual garment fabric it's Joann...or the internet. *sigh*
Even the super-expensive fahncee fabric boutique where all the six-figure hipster moms bought $40/yard specialty fabrics to make those excruciatingly precocious European-style kid's outfits with gave up the ghost a few years back. So now they've got to buy material for their 'A-line welted-pocket dress with matching beret and cardigan sweater' playsuits online like the rest of us peasants.
@@lizw5587 Fabric shopping online is so deeply unsatisfying, sigh.
@@lizw5587 I wish I had that kind of luck. I have sensory issues, so the feel of the fabric has to be just so or it will be an eternal source of torment (or, more likely, just go into a storage bin never to be used). The idea of buying unreturnable cut yardage without being able to feel it first is a bit too stressful for me unless I know exactly what I'm getting beforehand because I've bought or felt it before (or it will be used for non-garment purposes).
We don't have those in my area. We barely have a locally owned yarn shop.
Just imagining the scent that a sharpie dress would have had, I'm glad you went with the alternative fabric. It turned out great!
Fun fact! That "lazy town" picture was a bootleg Gwenpool costume. The difference was the hair. Gwenpool(marvel's version of an Isekai protagonist)does not have all pink hair. She's blond with pink tips. But the costume just is gwenpool.
This is absolutely stunning. Not just the dress, but what you are giving people during this awful time. I appreciate all the time, effort, and creative talent you put into these videos, they are stellar!
I got a headache just thinking about how smelly a sharpie-drawn dress would have been 🤕 haha
So glad you made the dream dress! It turned out great! And I’m always amazed at your makeup skills. I’m the same age as you and I still have yet to figure out how makeup works 😂
I've been sewing for 40 years, your skills are mind blowing! Simply unbelievable!!!
Fabric Marker Tip: they're supposed to be heated either with an iron or thrown in a dryer so the color can set into the fabric. That's why I believe it bled in your test
What the heck? I've never heard this. That would explain some things.
You're supposed to heat them before use or the fabric afterwards?
oh that's so interesting! im about to start sewing, so that's really helpful!

Rachel, so proud of you for tackling this dress. I’ve been sewing for 50 years and something like this scares me. I will admit I was disappointed on Fri and Sat when I didn’t see you .. but to my joy there you were when I got up Sunday morning.. you go girl!
If you're in eastern Massachusetts you have to go to The Fabric Basement or Sewfisticated in Framingham. They are both independent fabric stores and are SO MUCH CHEAPER AND BETTER than Joanns. As a fellow crafter in the area I would highly recommend them!
I got married on Halloween and you just gave me flashbacks to seeing the snow outside and being absolutely horrified.
I *feel ya* on drawing in fabric. It actually takes FOREVER.
I had to draw numbers on 2400 mesh bags for ecology field research. Between sewing and labelling the bags I watched ALL SEVEN seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I don't regret my choices, but they are not for the feint of heart.
I just finished trick or treating in my beetlejuice costume and... I adore this. I love it so much.
Also you should be proud of me. I had TWO costumes this year, because I am very spooky. (I wore the 1830s strawberry dress I made to school yesterday. Stairs were fun.) I felt the thing about not giving yourself enough time.... I made the whole victorian dress, entirely by hand, in a WEEK because that was all the time I had

This turned out beautifully! Amazing job!
Green stripe might be from sharpie bleed... sharpie when diluted sometimes has a green tint... my thoughts which could be wrong.
That's what I thought too. Kind of looks like bleeding. I can't believe those were drawn on!
or I was also thinking maybe even just the photo quality?
Yeah the only other thing I can think is maybe it helped with any vibrating optical problems from the high contrast stripes on film?? 🤷♀️
It was painted on
Permanent marker I don’t think bleeds, but it’s been five million years since I took sixth grade chromatography, so who knows!
Sharpie seems like such a weird choice to me. Like wouldn’t it be quicker to just tape the lines and use fabric paint?
I had the same thought! Even acrylics would do in a pinch???! (been there done that) also, the bleeding of fabric markers is unreal *ugly cries in Beetlejuice suit*
My Halloween costume required stripes as well, and I had the same idea. I used painters tape and fabric paint
I was thinking the same thing!!!!
Fabric paint is a bit stiff
@@alexismontez4230 it’s true. But it would make the process 100x easier. If you kept your layer in the balance of thin and opaque it would be worth that little bit of rigidity I think.
Sharpie is the wardrobe & costumers best tool! LOL as one I can attest to this...this is what we call in the business "quick & dirty"
I once had to make vintage prisoner costumes with those wide stripes. Couldn't find the fabric so I sprayed the stripes on with floral spray because they needed to look very worn. Anyway cheers in your costuming pursuits!!! There needs to be more of us😊

This whole look is so beautiful, and with this time limit?! Oh my god, Rachel, you are incredible!
Also side note: maybe the green stripes were added so that the black and white pattern weren't so high contrast and wouldn't mess up with the camera with the ripple effects? In addition, we won't really see them, but they they add more interest and texture to the pattern?
that would make sense
I am so grateful that lately you are subtitling your videos, so those of us who speak Spanish can translate them and know more exactly what you are saying, because, in case you don't know, there is no content like yours in Spanish, and it's a shame for vintage women like me looking for advice and more to start and stay in this wonderful world.

I know that Nick is Frodo's daddy, but it's so so weird to see someone else holding him! He's such a Mama's boy. And the dress turned out AMAZING. A year ago you never would have tackled this, much less pulled it off SO well. And the fact that you knew what you could do to make it "more" if you wanted to is also evidence of how far your sewing has come.
7:34 Ya, I get that, I actually don't shop at Joans (or at least try to) because everythings so expensive. theres this local shop where I live and its a lot cheaper then Joans and is basically a giant warehouse filled with SO MUCH fabric, they even have these barrels of buttons, its awesome.

I feel like this is a weird compliment, but your voice and your whole vibe is just so soothing. Like I'm so interested in this video and the dress, but I also kinda want to just conk out listening to you talk!
I worked at a Joann’s for three years and I can confirm that they wrack up the prices just so you’ll use coupons. This is especially true with seasonal items; they’ll be crazy expensive at first just so that they’ll be reasonable when they go on deep discount later.
I love Rachel Maksy. She embraces her quirks and makes them her strengths and her sarcasm is so clear and pronounced that its sometimes shocking because she's such a cutie pie!

I love seeing so many people talk about this dress lately! I used to imagine how cool this would look as a wedding dress, but I now think it's silly that we think of prom & wedding dresses as the only times we get to wear the dress of our dreams so good on you for recreating it just for fun!

Omg I literally said 'NOOoooo' to my TV when you said you were going to draw the stripes on. I'm so glad you used striped fabric, that would have been an insane amount of work! This came out awesome 👌
Also 'the lime green stripe is as hard to find as diversity in Tim Burton movies' is a sick ass burn 🔥
You should totally do a project where you don’t give yourself a deadline and you work on it when you want to and are inspired. I feel like you’ll have a lot more fun and be happier with the end result! I’m a seamstress and I found doing what I love on a deadline and/or for money kind of sucked the fun out of it.
That is a great idea.
But I think Rachel admitted that she works better with deadlines. Some people are like that. I still think maybe she should try it again. People do change over time.
100% agree with the Michael's and Joanne's thing. Everything is jacked up because you can use the coupon (except the coupons apply to only one item most of the time, where I live anyway)
Ah, yes. The Massachusetts Halloween experience: sitting up to your ankles in snow yelling “take one” to the kids at the end of your driveway taking far more than one
I just moved down to Randolph and found out that even without the pandemic there wasn’t much trick or treating in our neighborhood. I think we got 6 kids in total (5 in one family).
But MA Halloween has a lot of corollaries with Upstate NY Halloween, puffy jackets over costumes and all.
@@MildredCady Yeah we didn’t get a lot of traffic this year. Usually we get anywhere from 200-300 kids but saw less than fifty this year so I spent most of the night in front of a fire pit glaring at my neighbors across the street having a party lol

"This ain't too shabby." Girl, it's absolutely amazing, the dress, the wig, the makeup... you did a great job! And not just on this look. Following you on instagram has been a treat, you are such an amazing artist who keeps challenging herself and I love that! I'm always looking forward to your next upload ♡
"This is my first white Halloween"
*Minnesota has entered the chat to talk about the Halloween Blizzard of 1991* It never fails, my dad brings it up every year. 😂
Great work as always, Rachel!!
Was JUST thinking this. Not only that but we beat the whole damn country THIS year. 8 inches on Oct. 20 I mean honestly.
Me, living at the German coast being like: wait,u guys have snow?
The snow was pretty deep in Wisconsin last year on Halloween. My siblings went trick or treating in snowpants.
I’m in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada I can could on one have there Halloween was miserable. Wind, snow, rain. I think I can count the nice weathered Halloween’s on one hand
I remember that year! It was pretty rough in Illinois too, but it was just last year we had record accumulation of snow on the ground. This year it was in the 60s, although we all were bracing for a tornado for how cold it was earlier in the week and because it's 2020. At this rate with temps going back up, I predict that we'll have another Thanksgiving tornado outbreak. 🥺
You are absolutely THE most adorable thing ever! I love your style, makes me wanna wear vintage. 🤓
I've never caught one of your videos so early... I know by the time I finish watching there will be hundreds of comments, so I would just like to say, when you might actually see it, that you are one of the lights for me here on YT. I have an interest in historic fashion, but I don't sew. I watch your videos because I find you both relatable and hilarious. I also am inspired by the way you're comfortable in your own skin - so helpful to those of us who struggle with it. Thanks for the inspiration and I'm glad I have not yet caught up with watching the wonderful backlog of your videos, since I happily just discovered you this year.
Hey! You probably already heard of them, but since you mentioned you like historical dress, I suggest you check out Morgan Donner and Bernadette Banner!
@@mirjanbouma Yes, thanks! I think I've seen everything from Bernadette and everything from Karolina Zebrowska (both are just WONDERFUL in their own unique ways). I know of Morgan and she is next.... thanks for the reminder, I appreciate it. :)
You're welcome! Enjoy.
I woke up in the middle of the night (I live in Sweden) and thought “wonder if Rachel Maksy has uploaded her Halloween video yet”. Well, she had. And wow! You did it! The dress is amazing. You’ve got so good at sewing. Great work!
Me too, but I am in Britain.
I always loved that dress too and you did an amazing job! 👏👏👏😍😍😍
I don’t know why, but seeing you in a hoodie is jarring.😅
Rachel: *sits criss cross applesauce, slouching, and talking very relaxed while wearing a stay (corset)
All of the actresses who bitch about their corsets and not being able to move: *gasping in horror*
14:25
The actresses: SHE´S A WITCH!
Me: No, she´s just not stupid.
Hah same xD I've been making my own corset (I'm at mockup 3 so far), and I've worn mockup #2 for about two days to figure out where I needed to make adjustments to have it fit comfortably. And I must say. Corsets are amazing for your posture. I was able to slouch, but only slightly, instead of like the computer gremlin I've become over the past half year. And the lower back support. Heavenly.
@@BlitzsieLDiscoLSnow I'm almost finished with mine, I only need the actual lacing to arrive (I'm using a thick thread for the breaking in right now). These two days I've been straighter than a pencil because my back got a "Oh, we're not slouching, got it" signal.
@@Soulcrash3 Mine is made to measure (no tight-lacing) and from a natural fibre, so I hope it´s better than those cheap-ass "corsets." I may try my hand at stays when I have the courage (and less school work).
It shocks me so much, but also makes me so proud, that you can finish a dress of this magnitude in 5 days... whereas I can't finish a crocheted head scarf in 2 weeks. I congratulate you.
I would have to say 'your best yet' 😊 As a fellow sewer not an easy project to attempt. I love watching your videos, your imagination and humour have got me through a 'heck-ton' of time isolating over here in the UK. Thanks Rachel for keeping me sane and making me smile 😁
I work at joanns and yes you're absolutely right. 80% of customers use coupons and I always try to get people signed up for promotions because the prices are high
I bought my first sewing machine after occasionally hand sewing stuff for a few yrs and ive been absolutely adoring watching your videos while i work. Can't wait to learn more about this mysterious machine!
I now fully understand your struggle with tissue paper patterns. As soon as I put mine on the floor my dog is attracted to it like the little shit disturber that she is and walks all over it
I swear to god as soon as I lay one down, my cat wakes up from the deepest sleep ever and comes all the way upstairs just to sit on it and fuck it up lmao
Your “I think I did a pretty good job” in the wrap up was so adorable and wholesome. You did a fantastic job! I love your cinematic reveals, they are always so well done!
Dear fanbase/Rachel (if you read/respond):
I hope you are all well, it is finally Friday! I must know, what breed (if known) is the adorable Mr. Frodo? Those ears, the nubbin, I cannot with all this cuteness. He is a perfect sized pupper. My dog knowledge fails me. He looks like a giant Papillon except they do not have tail nubbins or that coloring.
Thank you for any responses!
Rachel: what the frick did i cut this with a hammer and chisel? did i gnaw on it like a hamster?
Me: has never heard anything more relatable in my life when looking back at old projects...
Also yes, having gotten about five inches of snow for HALLOWEEN ("dusting" my left butt cheek mr weatherguy)...
LOVE the finished gown! It looks AMAZING!
