Good Afternoon! I am so glad that you are here! This video was filmed about 2 weeks ago, so the repair line up will look out of date to all of you that watch my videos. Here is a quick little story about a Stihl MS440! It's not a long video today, but I wanted to show you this really nice saw while it was here! Do you own a MS 440? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! I love reading all of your comments! Please like this video, and I will see you again soon!
Wow What a beautiful saw!!! Some folks do mix their fuel rich. Then others straight gas them. ARGH!!! That spark was fouled more than I would have thought. Thanks once again for your Excellent videos.
The love that saw receives is amazing. That’s the way my dad taught me to take care of tools. It’s such a contrast to the last video where the MS361 saw was abused and tossed out. Happy holidays!
So good to see the 440 on the bench, thank you Erica, I'm still loving the videos. Mine isnt the arctic version so just a normal dust filter but it does have a deccon valve. The saw is definitely on the heavy side but it is a beast. I will keep using it until i can't start it and then never sell it, not sure my daughter wants it as part of her inheritance though😂. Thank again Erica for the hard work and helping us all out by sharing your knowledge......keep up with barrier cream 😊.
I have a MS440 magnum that I bought about 20 or so years ago and it is still running strong.. It has cut my fire wood every year since and with just a little maintenance each year it is still cutting my fire wood . As I get older the saw does get heavier, but I love it.
I just sold my mint condition 440 last year in showroom condition. I'm sick to my stomach when I think about it but I can't cry over spilled milk. It just didn't get used much so it was mint. What a beast. Thanks for bringing back memories Erica 👍🏼 Great video
Thanks Erica. As you say it's a very nice saw. At around 70cc and 6.3kg, it's a very useful size for general use and felling. Thanks very much for sharing a video on this saw!
Nice saw !!! Back in the day, I had a STIHL 08s, a very good all around saw ,I cut a lot of firewood with it, and it really held up well . Also had a Wright C70-g , totally old school, with breaker points, and a Carter Carburetor. It was hard to keep running, but when it did it really really had some power at 116cc. . Planetary reduction drive..
Xlogger here. This saw really got my attention. My desire burns to pick up that beauty and head out to my firewood log pile. Thanks for showing it to me Erica.
Hello What a beast of a saw. Powerfull as hell but to Heavy for my uses, In Germany you are only allowed to fell Trees from Oktober till the end of February, so its nice to have heated Handgrips in Winter. Thanks for another Nice Video.
@@marriedwithsmallengines Yes thats tru, because of the Animals ( Birds, squirrels and so on) they maybe have kids there in the Tree in the Summertime. When the Tree is completly dead, and it is Dangerous for Peobles or Cars you can do it every Time in the Year. The Law here is very strict with the Nature, but thats ok we only have one World.
I was in the market for a "bigger" saw and ran on to a Stihl 440 Magnum at a pawn shop that I frequent. The shop owner let me take it for the weekend and try it out. I didn't bother to even take the saw back, I just went in and paid him. Mine is not as cosmetically clean as the one you featured but it runs like a champ. Thanks for letting us know what great saws the 440's are.
I have one of the saws I made a living with in the mid seventy. Wish you were closer I’d have you overhaul it if you could find parts. I have six saws but it is my favorite.
Well now this is an interesting video and a very nice chainsaw. Thank you for the informative video. I run a chainsaw a lot but I really don't need one as big as that 440 but if I had it I would definitely use it.
I have a Stihl 044 I bought new in 1999 because the oil cap protector was broken off during shipping and the dealer took a $100 off the price instead of replacing the case, its only had about 20 tanks of fuel through it, I also have a Stihl MS440 that was a dumpster saw from a well known logging company that pulled out of our area and dumped all of their old saws and parts in the dumpster, it needed a cylinder and piston.
Hi Erica, think you need to cut a deal with the old fella! That saw needs to be in your collection.. be a shame to see it ruined…what a nice piece! 🇦🇺🍺🍺
I have one of them 440s and it is my favorite but it is a heavy saw but if I have a big tree to take down it's the best I have a 190 that I need to get going it has not run in a year or so it was giving to me from a friend that has only husky saws and doesn't like stil if you have a video on the 190 I have not found it has a problem with the bar getting loose God Bless Y'all and have a great weekend 🙏👍
Thank you for that wonderful video of such a beautiful saw! Shame it doesnt get out much😉 And my old 044 is best saw ever. Read comments about the 440 being heavy, but my take is the excitement of running a beautiful fit 044 makes my 572 seem a bit heavier… Positive it’s all in my head. Thanks again!
Hi Erica, Another great video. Those older, well built magnum chainsaws with no decomp valve are my favorite - especially the 038. Would you consider telling us what the ‘properly gapped” spark plug gap actually is for each saw you diagnose? I believe most are 0.5mm. Cant wait for the next exciting video! Cheers
I've always wished that My MS461 could have been an Arctic Model when I used to cut in our sub 0F Montana winters, but we couldn't(or at least I couldn't) get one in The States.
G’day Erica thanks for another interesting video I really enjoy watching you doing diagnostic repairs, one thing I have noticed is your very nice engagement ring have you ever thought of putting tape around it so it’s protected so there is less chance of losing the stone. It is just a thought. Keep well love the channel look after yourselves kind regards from Tasmania……John
I have one 044 here but i don´t know what the issue have this saw.I think she won´t start or get off when its warm after 10-15 minutes in use.I have a lot of old saws as gift become from my uncle he died in may 2024 with cancer and kidney problems at the last weeks.
I just purchased a FarmMac F380W and it pulls a 25” Bar every bit as good as an old 044. I’ve cut up all my large stuff and now it goes in to hibernation pickled for long term storage.
Nice saw! Too big for me, though. I had a big Husqvarna, also too big for me, so I gave it away to a young guy who was admiring it. I hope I did the right thing; I know he still has it.
The synthetic fuel is expensive. When storing I empty and void all pumped fuel. I then put in enough to run for a minute to get the synthetic into the complete system. If purge valve is used I pump it full of synthetic. Then i empty excess and use it in the next one being stored. So far this stuff is a godsend.
It just sounds funny when I hear woman say that that a saw is beautiful. If I even mention the word chainsaw to my wife she usually rolls her eyes back and walks the other direction.😂 But you are right, that is one beutifull saw.
Nice work! These videos are so entertaining, During the week I watch on my smart tv but cannot easily comment. At the weekend I can watch on my PC and add comments , Keep up the great work. Very informative. xx. Lynton G4XCQ
ERICA ANOTHER GREAT video what a saw love this stuff i thought that's what ALL tree people did keep them under BED too keep them from getting STOLEN ❤🎉😂
I just repaired an 044, well that is what was on its label. The gentleman bought it used for $?Anyway upon immediate inspection with him I found no Stihl numbers on any of the parts. AFTERMARKET they are! He wasn’t to happy. The only thing on the saw that was Stihl was the clutch.
Our neighbour, who was “thrifty”, used to take purple farm fuel, put it into glass bottles, and then set it out in the sun. After a few days it would turn orange and be legal to use in a regular vehicle😊.
Nice saw, I have been busy doing other things and my new ms661 might end up being cherished like that Lol. Already put on a max flow, the new air filters that come on it are less quality than the one on that saw.
My ex ex father in law lent me his Homelit saw and the gas tank. I used it to cut down a pine tree. After a few runs with the saw it ran out of gas, so I refilled it. Next thing I noticed it, it locked up. Apparently he didn't mix oil with the gas. He said throw it away. I gave it to a guy at work. He tore it down and it was bad news. Later on my ex ex father in law bought a new stihl and he said you will never borrow it. I had given him the gas can back and then he it was his fault for not mixing it. I told him whatever!
My 044 calls for 40:1 fuel mix. I know the new synthetic oils are better than they were 20+ years ago, but I still follow the manufacturers guidelines. What do you think?
I use 50:1 in my 044 as per the manual. I wonder if they changed the recommended ratio at some point through the production period of the 044. Maybe manuals for the earlier 10mm /slant fin were 40:1 and that's the model you have. I don't know the answer. I also only ever use stihl 2 stroke oil though in the US i see a lot use Red Armour instead. Really need to give mine a look over as I haven't run it for almost a year.
When you mention adding a new spark plug gapped properly, can you please put the numbers out for said saw you’re working on? Or are they all the same around 020?
Did the handle heat work? I mix 32:1 and my spark plugs do not look like that at all. You have have to find a low viscosity, low flash point oil. Arctic is not available in the states any longer. So Husqvarna gets that business. And they provide 2 filters with the ˋG’ package - a winter one and a flocked dry season one. 👍

Now that’s a clean saw!

Great old saw. I’ve had lines that when wet would get mushy and collapse. Love his story too.
