Stihl 036 PRO Chainsaw Has Not Run In Over 20 Years! Will It Get A Second Chance At Life?
Thanks to Erica and the RUclips University, I feel I could repair most chainsaw brands. The Stihl is a remarkable saw with excellant engineering, easy to work on.
Looks like in the states parts are not only going to get harder to get, but frightfully more costly due to tRump tariffs on more items than can be imagined.
The intro was killer. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
I will tune a guy's 026th field straight off.The street out of lowe's brand spanking knee and the cylinder was leking on his
It's the crank seels more thin likely the chain side
As fare as rebuilding that saw I'd fix the feul and run it
Dont really see just dirty gas doing that im thinking straight gas
another candidate for a project guy that wants to waste his saturday AM avoiding the wife unit after a friday nite binge with buddies.... those items sell country wide - just offer free shipping with a 6 pack and i bet you could get $500 each...
Great video, i always check plug gap on new plugs yo would be suprised at the different gaps
all MS250 are horrible to start, it is a design flaw.....you would think that the engineers who built this saw would realize this but hey he probably doesn't own one....be aware new buyer, it will be find till after a few tanks in.....Stilh do make adjustment or see another horrible saw sit on the shelf till you make another junk......
That drop test is awesome for quickly testing a worn out low compression saw, thanks for all the good information.
As long as the older model works , with a new chain and bar as suggested, run it till it's done.
I very much enjoy listening to, and watching, your witty and informative commentary on chainsaw repair, upkeep, and maintenance. As I have often heard said to me, I now say to you . . . . "I thank you for your service". I am sometimes surprised when I hear you remark about your amazement of some 'ancient' saws and equipment. As an 82 year-old 'hermit' who lives off-grid in the mountain wilderness of North-West California, I do not think of my equipment (which I bought new) as particularly 'old'. I still regularly mow with my Craftsman riding mower which I bought in 1985. I still log and do forest tree work with my Stihl 041, which I also bought new in 1972. Although it is getting used less and less, as it's heavy weight has become more of a stuggle to carry around as my creeping age has weaken my muscle strength. And too, the two ECHO 302 smaller saws, which have served me faithfully for 50 years (and which I love dearly) I am having difficulty in getting parts to keep them going. That has forced me to step into the 'modern world', as I have just now began a replacement program. Because my Stihl 041 has served me so well, I have just now purchase (used - CraigsList) a 251 Stihl and a 271 Stihl Chainsaw to replace my faithful Echo 302 saws. Because these new saws are much more 'finicky' to start (compared to my older saws) I have had the good fortune to stumble (via RUclips) onto your site. And of another woman in Arkansas, USA. Like many things, it takes a 'good woman' to show a man how to do things. And for that, I am extremely thankful ! - With my best wishes and warm regards, Doug Vieyra, Eureka, California
Thank you, Doug! Living off grid in the mountains sounds amazing.
to me, i would never put anymore the 1hr shop time into a homeowner saw - granted i do live in remote area and have done lots of dumb stuff to 'get er' done'....... what i would like to have is a Stihl shop manual - that is what is time for piston/cylinder replacement on a 362 vs 391... FYI, i always buy pro grade gear for myself - i just bought a 362 to complement my 048, 051 and my 2 170s.... the 170s wont get any love - but the others will... these are parts candidate or learning tools for new techs - not junk yet...
Looks like user abused the saw .
Hi Erica, I’ve just recently found your channel and have been backwatching your earlier videos. Great content and has given me confidence to look a bit closer at my own saws. I have an MS211, MS261 and a MS362, so was particularly interested in this video. Just a comment (but you may already be aware), near the start you couldn’t move the chain, even with the brake off. The MS362 has an added safety feature that when you release the throttle, the brake is applied, even when switched off. So to move the chain, you have to hold in the throttle switch. Not sure if this feature is on any other STIHL chainsaw, but I think it’s a great feature. Keep the videos coming, from Alan in N Ireland.
Thank you for going through all of this extra work to show us
I've had an 026 for more than 30 years and "Stilh" runs like the first time I ran it. Take care of your tools and you will have them for a lifetime.
i got the same problem on te same chainsaw ! where is the best place to buy parts because sthhil want too much !!! may be chinise kit cylinder on the internet
I am very grateful for you taking the time and effort to do a complete teardown of a saw. I have never seen anyone split the cases, and only once have I seen my dad's saw guy (long since retired) rebuild the top end. This kind of content is what youtube was made for, and I sincerely thank you for contributing. 41:49 When you said 'when it's done', my leapt with joy. If there's one thing better than tearing something down, that would be assembling something. My one request is to as you are reassembling the saw, please talk about all the tricky parts and gotchas that might trap someone who decided to tackle a project like this on their own. Aside from the Official Manual, you might be the only resource that person has. Enjoy your coffee~
Thank you!
Show us a teardown plz
Half-joking half-serious question: Has ANY customer in the History of Forever EVER told you the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about the condition of the saw and/or what actually happened to the saw? Rhetorical question: Don't they know by now that the Truth will be revealed as you work on the saw? Really enjoying your channel, and I am learning Everything I Always Wanted to Know about Saw Repair but was Afraid to Ask.
I believe that some customers tell me everything they know (or think they know), but many leave out important details. An autopsy always reveals the truth :) I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos!
So, it has been a month since this vid went up ... Did the customer decide to have you fix the saw, or did they decide that they could replace it with a new one for about the same money? I can't seem to find a part II in your videos. Hope you hade a great Christmas and New Year.
The customer decided not to repair this saw and he left it. It's on my list for future repair :)
Awesome video, echo makes great landscape equipment.
How does the water get into the fuel?
Our fuel is loaded with Ethanol. So between poor quality fuel, poor storage techniques, leaving jerry cans out in the rain, etc.. it gets there.
What are the symptoms of a clutch that’s going bad?
