@marriedwithsmallengines The owner brought that saw in saying hard to start,it looks about impossible that that saw would work good at times and run poor at times,it just crossed my mind at the end of the day, great video,
Dear Erica, I'm 74 years young and worked in a chemical plant for 26 years. I learned a lot about chemicals, good and bad. To the point, any chemical that ends with "ene" is not to be handled with out the proper PPE (personal protective equipment). Thank you for taking the time to show all of the steps in your process, and how to use the various tools, too. I really appreciate the level of detail! Tyler will have an ironman grip after using the pressure vac tool. ;)
The bagpipes had me rolling lol please show a full saw rebuild! Would love to watch your process from start to finish. Great group of saws from the tree service - good score!
Another first for me. Wow! That bundle of used saws is gold! Great score! This channel has become my #1 Stihl chainsaw repair go to! Awesome! Thanks Erica and Tyler.
I’ve been playing with saws since the mid to late 80’s, I’ve never seen a crack like that before. Seen broken cooling fins but nothing worse. Can’t imagine that cylinder coming from the factory like that. Very interesting, thanks for showing it to us.
Good work, both of you. I have seen a crack similar on a husky. It was dropped out of a tree at about 50ft. If only equipment could talk 😊 Hang in there, I'm neck deep in chain sharpening at the moment. ❤
My guess - not defective from the factory (almost any QC process that included starting the saw would have caught that) but likely a latent casting defect that resulted in an actual failure as a result of either heating/cooling cycles or a fall (as you said). Trivia point: many operators will shut a very hot saw down immediately rather than let it idle for a few minutes to allow the saw to cool itself down with its own forced-air cooling through the cylinder vents. Not usually a fatal oversight but possibly that's the cause here.
The chainsaw investors crack another tough case! That was a cool diagnosis. As a side note, I priced out the Stihl LTR pressure-vac tester with all the accessories-carb blocks, etc. I found one on Ebay for $700 U.S.. Stihl branded tools are pricey as you have mentioned in the past. The Stihl fuel line tool is $45 U.S.. Thanks for a Saturday morning adventure on a cold winter morning.
This saw does not show its age for a 15 year old saw used commercially. It is certainly worth rebuilding. The MS460's are generally very reliable saws. I am inclined to believe like you that something may have happened with it to cause the stress fracture or "casting defect." In its current condition a new cylinder kit and wrist pin bearing would be a great long term solution. Or a good condition used cylinder and a new piston and rings, needle cage wrist pin bearing, gasket and you may be in business. (It did look like though the fuel filter was reasonably new -- it was not the proper one for a saw this large -- its diameter was way too small). Remember to remedy the air filter mess if it goes back together. These are great saws. Keep the content coming it is very thorough and interesting.
Erica, I enjoy your hard work. I get a kick out of your Canadian broge. I was a cop here in North Dakota, very close to the border. We would have an invitational pistol shoot every fall. The entire graduating class at the RCMP academy would come down here to participate. Boy did those people love to party. They even taught us to play but darts. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
Great as always. Appreciate your determination to get answers and share them with us. I think you were a little hard on the helper today, but he did take your flashlight ....... So I guess he deserved it. Thanks,

Looks like there’s replacement parts in that box that’ll contribute to a rebuild.👍

My favorite channel! But I do have a suggestion, for what it's worth -- Perhaps you could list part numbers for Stihl tools and parts you used during the video in the description? I noticed you did that at least once before and thought it was very helpful :)
I have seen something similar to an original 066 cylinder that leaked in the same way six months after the saw was sold. It is undoubtedly a casting defect that is probably due to not being quick enough to fill the mold with liquid aluminum so it has been semi-solid in place. Stihl just replaced the customer's saw without protesting here. The cylinder on the ma 460 has had a weakness throughout its life, as I am pretty sure it will not crack right there if the saw has suffered mechanical damage.
You connected the tank replacement and crack at the same moment i was typing. Nice haul on used saws. Doubt you really needed for content. The two man could be a 5 part video
@@StihlTyler I keep wondering about that saw. Sometimes, I've been very surprised by how easily some start after sitting for many years. I'd check for spark / clean points and add gas.

Maybe it is just here in Europe but I meet these people all the time being almost rude when they see a big saw. Thank you for posting this excellent video, Do you run a sawmill in premises also? My grandfather owned and operated a sawmill and he did really well with it financially. I'd help him back in my teenage years. As to this MS 460 diagnosis, I am wowed! First time I've seen an example of a cracked cylinder. Looks like you found two separate cracks. I'm also glad that Tyler starred in the video too. Can you let us know what the owner of this saw decided to do? If it were my saw, I would have bought a brand new saw. I hope the owner of the saw appreciates seeing this video. I'm sure he was completely impressed when he saw air bubbles blowing out of the cylinder itself.
Thank you for being here, Robert! We appreciate you!!
