Good saws but I hardly use it anymore since purchasing a 550xp g. I’ve said before, I wish a shop like yours was here. Excellent work!👏👍

We got banned from using used engine oil in our chainsaws due to it causing cancer. Folk still using it are daft. I rebuild all my saw carbs. Great video, again👍
Thank you for this video. The Amazon carbs come with many small parts. I have had an aftermarket fuel line hold pressure on a pressure test, however the tank leaked because the stiffer material did not mold to the tank housing very well.
Thank you for posting this excellent video. I liked seeing how you went about repairing it. I agree with you about using OEM parts. I prefer them also. The only large device I own which has an engine is my car, and that goes to the dealer for all services now. It costs me more, but I need the car to work as designed at all times, and OEM parts plus an experienced technician help make that possible for me. I've never been stuck on the breakdown lane yet. Now getting back to your video....and bearing in mind that I'm no expert....I think you need trays to help hold loose parts for you. Your carburetor stand is really nice. I wonder if there could be some attachment for it that will hold the carburetor solidly in place for you so you can assemble and reassemble it quickly. I notice that the carburetor moves on the carburetor stand quite a lot. If it could be pressed against the back of the stand and held immobile that would help you. I was completely shocked to see the bar oil tank filled with used motor oil. The acids in that must destroy the bar and chain and clutch parts rather quickly. Whew. What a way to ruin a $1,100 investment. Plus the motor oil itself is a hazard to anyone coming in contact with it.
I got my first Stihl about 5 years ago.MS 171.since then I have added a 009,026,036,038 magnum,041 farm boss..all of them run and cut wood for my firewood sales.
Morning Erica. Maybe I missed it in the video, but the reason why the owner of this saw put on an aftermarket fuel line with that aftermarket carb is because it comes as a kit on Amazon. Usually there will be a fuel line and filter, carb, maybe an oil line and filter, some kits have a new air filter, etc. Cheapest of the cheap for sure. Have a great day
@@marriedwithsmallengines maybe the one that came with the set fell apart? I've used those $15 sets before, let's just say you want to keep as many of the old parts as possible.
I'm with you on aftermarket stuff. I own a John Deere 66SV, twin cylinder, which is an Echo CST 610 EVL but the Ignition module went bad and haven't been able to find one. Some good but mostly bad. Great repair! I watched most of this on my way to remove a dead animal from someone's interior wall of their house. It was a stinky job but smelled like money $$$$ to me. Thanks!
The motorsäge master mechanic solves another one. Comparing the details of quality vs. junk parts is interesting. Nice closeups in order to show us things. The little details are appreciated like the music and sound effects which are just for fun. Thanks for all the work you put into this video. 😀
I use an in-line cup that has line in and out with a seal cap. Hook up and test as normal, any fuel will get caught in the cup and cannot get through to the pump. The in-line cup works like the old glass fuel filters that were on so many implement engines prior to the 70’s. An in-line capture cup is also used today with a hydraulic brake bleeder.
As I've said every time one is on, the MS361 is one of my favorite saws, also, I won't use aftermarket Fuel Filters ,Fuel Hoses, Air Filters, Carburetors, or coils. I found too many that were junk when I was working on saws. If it's worth rebuilding/maintaining, then it's worth investing in quality parts.
I have learned to get the stihl lines. That o-ring keeps the line from collapsing when it goes around the tight corner. Seems to me the crispy metering diaphragm was the original problem. For someone wanting to save money, he just cost himself more, not to mention spending more on chains, bars and sprockets. Maybe he wants to spend money on rotator cuff surgery instead of an elasto handle.
Old New Parts are great but take up space, like the Morgue of Chainsaws out back.😊 There’s some money back on the $100 you paid for all those boxes Erica😊 Erica you’ll need to covered him back to Bar-Oil Erica👍 The fuel line may of came with aftermarket Carburettor as with spark plug and fuel filter as a package.😊 Don’t forget the part you borrowed from your rebuilding 361 saw for this job, to charge to replace yours.😊
I think after the pressure test, I would recommend to the customer to replace the rings and give the saw some fresh cross hatching, it be a good thing for the next couple years!

Hi Erica, I've only heard of used motor oil as a substitute for bar oil and now that I've seen it I'll continue to use bar oil as I have for over 40 years! 😅 Several times you spoke of old fuel and the damage it does to the carburetor if it sits over time or long term storage. Myself, I drain the tank then run the engine until it dies before I put them away but I've always thought; "is there something I can flush the entire system with such as alcohol or mineral spirits or perhaps another solution?" My thought was to draw it through the system using the primer bulb then empty the tank and pump the bulb until empty. I'd like to know your thoughts or recommendations and also if I'm over thinking this which I tend to do quite often...🙄🙄😂 Thank you again Erica! Bob
We like using canned fuel for storage , Stihl motomix , kinetix , aspen all work great. Dump the pump fuel out. Add your storage fuel and run it for a few mins! Into storage! 😊

I concur with the stiff fuel line, probably came with the carburetor. Walbro does make great stuff, has been for quite a few years and is the primary blueprint for the thieves in the world 😢
I'm not saying it's a good idea, but if you don't mind waiting a week and ordering from China, you can get after-market fuel lines for about $1.80 Canadian each delivered !
Serial number for Stihl chainsaw My MS461 was made in Germany, my MS180 and MS310 was USA. • If the first digit in the serial number is a 1 then it was manufactured in Germany • If it’s a 2 or a 5 it was manufactured in the United States • A 3 means it’s manufactured in Brazil • Serial starting with 8 is Chinese made • Starting with 4 means made in Austria
The $25 carb kit came with carb, fuel line, spark plug, air cleaner. But that air filter and plug looked original. From the looks, I’m both shocked he let you Work on it, and surprised at the quality that it’s run this long. “Abused “ does not even come close to describing what that saws been thru. Soup Nazi would throw him out, without question.
thank you for your videos i am learning a lot ,could you please tell me what the test you do by running the saw on its side and then up is for, i seen a video where you said but i cant find it again thanks again and God bless
When you are looking down the cylinder with your camera, could you please explain what are the holes are on the side of the cylinder? I'm sure one is the intake, one is the exhaust but what are the other two? Thank you.
Once got a really careful playing with them skid steers hit a root in the driveway and ripped my biceps out both my arms right out of my shoulder joints
Throttle rod was most likely not connected at the carb when aftermarket was put in. The trigger was pushing into something and was traveling to its length freely. The trigger was squeezed as though it was connected and would not throttle up so it was squeezed harder which then broke off the fulcrum tab of the trigger? My diagnosis.
I have used aftermarket and found that they NEVER operate as OEM. They never tune and stay consistent, get an idle and won’t rev up, get it rev and it won’t idle. I had one aftermarket that just would not idle no matter what the needle did. Pulled the needle to find no tip, found the tip of the needle stuck in its bore.
JIS Standard. I'm not convinced you need one, since comparing a new JIS to an old worn Phillips is unfair and the Japanese use the same ISO Phillips pattern these days.
That one's running nice now! I liked the video. One thing I noticed in the close ups of that aftermarket carb was the large amount of scrapes and dings on the machined face. Like it got tumbled in a bin with 100 other ones. On the other side, I noticed some rough finish on the diecast surface, as if the casting die had been ground off with an angle grinder or coarse paper. Just zero care at the factory for these surfaces, which need to be made properly to work properly. Nice job on the repairs. Did you name this saw "Floppy" for the custom starter handle arrangement? 8^) Cheers!
Hello Erica, I enjoy watching your videos. I always learn from them. Thank You! I have a Stihl 009 and an Echo 650EVL each about 40 years old. I more recently added a Stihl 271. I enjoy cutting but Father (Time) doesn't let me do as much as I'd like. I was hoping I could ask a favor. I believe that you have shown a Stihl parts kit with several misc. screws, bolts, Etc. I tried to go through old videos to find it, but could not find any where you showed it. Could you tell the P/N of that kit again? Can you ship to the US? Can you drop ship? If so what might it cost to order from you and have it shipped? My local Stihl dealer claims to know nothing about such a kit and is not willing to try to look it up. Thanks again for your videos and your training.
I bought some air filters for my stihl 130R and the air didn't go through. I have always let the stihl dealer fix any problems that have happened. When I bought the 130R it had to be the hardest thing to pull to start. After watching some videos on RUclips I decided to buy a filler gauge to adjust the values and that made it turn over so much easier. The dealer i bought it from would not do it. Also bought a new Gravelly commercial zero turn and the dealer who happens to be the owner said when I change the engine oil to put in 3 quarts of oil in. So i did, then checked the oil and it was way over full. So then drained out the extra oil. Not listening to him again. Now i live in another state and this dealer says to use straight 30 weight where before Kawasaki said to use 20 50 oil. I don't get it.

I concur with the stiff fuel line, probably came with the carburetor. Walbro does make great stuff, has been for quite a few years and is the primary blueprint for the thieves in the world 😢
Oh hell yeah I have a FS91 pro trimmer I'd like to schedule a spa treatment for.Runs great but dirty 😃
Book it in! 🤣
@@marriedwithsmallengines I definitely would but I'm from across the pond north coast of Ohio
I'm not saying it's a good idea, but if you don't mind waiting a week and ordering from China, you can get after-market fuel lines for about $1.80 Canadian each delivered !
Serial number for Stihl chainsaw
My MS461 was made in Germany, my MS180 and MS310 was USA.
• If the first digit in the serial number is a 1 then it was manufactured in Germany
• If it’s a 2 or a 5 it was manufactured in the United States
• A 3 means it’s manufactured in Brazil
• Serial starting with 8 is Chinese made
• Starting with 4 means made in Austria
That's a pretty provocative thumbnail. 🤣👍 Maybe your next venture should be a calendar? 😂
Lol, I don't think anyone would buy it!!
You are awesome. 👍
I bet you wish that skid steer had a quick disconnect six way blade.
Thanks for sharing a pleasure to watch all your videos.. how many acres do you and your husband have it looks beautiful
The $25 carb kit came with carb, fuel line, spark plug, air cleaner. But that air filter and plug looked original. From the looks, I’m both shocked he let you
Work on it, and surprised at the quality that it’s run this long. “Abused “ does not even come close to describing what that saws been thru. Soup Nazi would throw him out, without question.
Can a faulty compression release mess up a cylinder? I’ve herd mixed things an I was thinking of blocking mine off
I have two stihl saws. One is a 260 and one is a 270. The 260 is more than 20 years old and the 270 is about 15
Awesome!
After market carburetor 😮 you get what you pay for when you buy them OEM carburetor is the best way to go Erika
You’re right. 😊
@@marriedwithsmallengines 👍👌
thank you for your videos i am learning a lot ,could you please tell me what the test you do by running the saw on its side and then up is for, i seen a video where you said but i cant find it again
thanks again and God bless
Great job. Is a vacuum/pressure test done regularly? What problem make you think it needs a test?
If that aftermarket carb sticks wide open isn’t that the position that the throttle link rod disconnect as it draws backwards?
Erica those tools to remove and replace crank seals will 5hey work on Echo chainsaws or are they different
That part bag looks older than you!!
It might be!!
When you are looking down the cylinder with your camera, could you please explain what are the holes are on the side of the cylinder? I'm sure one is the intake, one is the exhaust but what are the other two? Thank you.
simply the best video. Is rally driver Kalle Rovanperä there?
Yes! Lol
Erica, you are very observant. Thank you from Dublin Ireland.
When buying aftermarket carb they can come with the fuel line, air filter and plug.
Why don't you do a pressure vac test on the saws with the the decompression valve in to see if it's bad?
Once got a really careful playing with them skid steers hit a root in the driveway and ripped my biceps out both my arms right out of my shoulder joints
Ouch!!
You big tease Erica!
Fuel filter should go out easily toolless
Yes, when using OEM fuel line , the fuel filter will easily come off. This aftermarket line wouldn’t let go!!
@@marriedwithsmallengines It's pure junk..
I enjoy watching the work you do very good also tyler was good to
Erica you would make a great auto Tech, but I wouldn't whish that on anyone these days !
Something like that! He did run it for a while with the AM carb.
What was the new screwdrivers you were using?
JIS Standard.
I'm not convinced you need one, since comparing a new JIS to an old worn Phillips is unfair and the Japanese use the same ISO Phillips pattern these days.
Vessel armor grip available frome Amazon
I own 2 stihl ms 400C chainsaws and a stihl ms 261C
Glad to be here to 👍🙂
Hi Erika Could you please tell me what is the Green O ring on the Oem fuel line is it to tell you it is useable for ethanol thanks Mick 🇬🇧
Made in Brazil 🇧🇷
That one's running nice now! I liked the video. One thing I noticed in the close ups of that aftermarket carb was the large amount of scrapes and dings on the machined face. Like it got tumbled in a bin with 100 other ones. On the other side, I noticed some rough finish on the diecast surface, as if the casting die had been ground off with an angle grinder or coarse paper. Just zero care at the factory for these surfaces, which need to be made properly to work properly. Nice job on the repairs. Did you name this saw "Floppy" for the custom starter handle arrangement? 8^) Cheers!
I noticed that too. Cheaply made trash.
