Good Friday Morning! I am so glad that you stopped by! The weekend is upon is and I have LOTS of chainsaw content for you! Another weekend video marathon? Grab yourself a coffee and come along with me as we dive into this neglected Stihl MS291 Farm Boss! You never know what we could find! I am just so happy that your coming along with me! Do you own a MS271 or MS291? Let me know in the comments what saw you have, how long have you owned it and has it treated you well? I enjoy reading all your comments! On my bench today - a Japanese made Maruyama chainsaw, a Stihl MS440 Arctic and a Stihl 036! See ya next video!
Erica, you really need to tell us the story of how you got into working on chainsaws. I’m sure I’m not the only one who would be interested. BTW, love the Stihl shirt! And it’s my favorite color.
I loved the tone of your voice when you said "It's just going to go back out and sit in the rain and roll around in the back of a truck again". No judgement! I see you were careful not to let us see your eyes rolling. I sure hear a lot of complaints about the quality of today's gasolines. Here in B.C. I can't say I've ever had a complaint about the quality of gasoline. I use the good stuff, the premium, which all the snowmobilers and outboard motor owners here use. It sits for weeks and months at a time in all my equipment (lawnmowers, rototiller, pressure washer, chainsaws, old tractors) and never gives me trouble. I add StaBil to what fuel is in each tank at the end of the fall and top with fresh fuel in the spring. No problems. Does the premium gas here contain ethanol? I don't know. I've never worried about it. Keep these videos coming, Erica! I'm learning something new every day.
Erica, a big THANK YOU to you for posting the "MS291 Hard to start!! Why?" video!! Almost exact same issue I was having with my MS291! Walked back pretty much the same steps depicted in your video, chocked twice and and on the 2nd pull, voila! She's alive! Again, THANK YOU from sunny, warm Florida, USA!
Hi Erica, greetings from the UK, the repair/maintenance videos are very much appreciated. I use an ageing MS230C, which has served me well for many, many years of property maintenance, recently almost consigned to the skip due to poor running, with the primer bulb not filling, which didn't improve with a routine carb service, until I realised it needed a replacement 'O' ring on the rarely mentioned piston seal, hidden behind the throttle shaft. Thankfully the performance is now back to normal. I also have a 2018 MS291, mainly used for fallen trees, purchased due to its light weight, when compared to my original choice MS391. However, I do regret not factoring the lack of a decompression valve on the MS291, which on cold mornings takes several shoulder wrenching pulls, before it starts and gets warmed. Unfortunately, it'll likely last me many years, before I justify its replacement!😄
Hi Erica, Here in the US we've seen a constant decline in fuel quality and longevity for a long time now. It's so bad I can actually see the color of the fuel turn orange in just a few months. This doesn't seem to affect it's use in 4 cycle engines however 2-cycle engines are much less tolerant. I do use a fuel stabilizer which does help but it's not like the fuel 20 to 30 years ago. I've found emptying the fuel and running the saw until it empties the carburetor makes starting and running the saw once new fuel is used makes life so much easier. I've also got into the habit of draining the bar oil if the saw sits to avoid the dreaded bar oil puddle under the saw...I use Husqvarna saw so this may not be an issue with Stihl's. Routine maintenance and cleaning is the key!! Your channel is the very best and when you hadn't posted a video for a few months I thought something had happened..............SO glad it was simply due to business being good!
In response to your final words Erica, I find your channel interesting, lots of value and entertaining. !! I can almost feel your sadness sending these fine saws back to people who use, abuse , reuse reabuse and have no clue how to do basic maintenance to keep them running properly. ! Keep the great content coming
You asked. 2 of the 3 fixed "holders" for my 12 year old MS261 top cover did fall out when removing. I lost one dropped to no where ( Stihl replacement was $9. ! ) ; must be made of titanium. Your tutorials are excellent, concentrating on the obvious and not so before diving in. We learn from you...THX !!
Hopefully it doesn’t need 75 year old parts. Even Tecumseh lawnmower points are hard to find and $25. The file is your friend. And some 600 grit sandpaper.
Great video as always, I really enjoy your approach and teaching abilities. I do have a 291 and a 180, both are amazing and zero problems with either. I’m a stickler for taking care of though as well as all my Stihl farm and lawn equipment. I had a 290 prior to my 291, I sold that one to my brother and picked up the 291. I must say for a non commercial saw, it really does an amazing job.
Another great diagnostic video Erica...also thanks for doing the 036 video last week, I have one still in great running condition. Looking forward to your next video.
Literally ran my ms250 yesterday. I keep it stupid clean.Yearly tune,93 octane, only replacement is pull cord assembly.Mines a 2013.2 pulls cranks, Yes it's a tight yank and Typical for the 250.I find people flood them out, choke full pull 2-3 times Up to half choke,it should crank.Granted my method may not jive 4 everyone or a older saw not in Good care.
Enjoy your videos. I have an MS 025(1996), a MS291, a MS 390, and a pole saw #?. I noticed the dirty saws and thought glad my saws..... OH NO my saws were dirty!! I took all of them to the spa. The ol MS 025 has only been to a shop one time and that was when I ran over it with a tractor. I use it the most.
Thank you for posting this excellent video. I'm a little repetitive here but....seeing this makes me wish that there were a way to remotely start a Stihl saw with an electric start capability. This time you sustained a hand injury. I kind of think that recoil start, in this day and age, should be replaced with easier engine start methods. It would be a real boon for everyone working with saws. I do realize that the engineers at Stihl are going to need to design such a capability and produce it in the gas engine models. Another thing this video makes me realize is that you need an outdoor test stand to hold the saw rigid for you, perhaps at knee or waist height, with an eye to making a saw -- any saw -- easier for you to start. That recoil was mighty hard on your arm and elbow. The issue at hand would probably have ripped a weaker person's arm out at the shoulder, or maybe just dislocated a few bones. If the test stand could sort of grip the power head, and have a servo motor built into it that can rotate the power head on any axis and position, you could stand back and operate the saw with your phone. That is a big safety plus for you. I notice your skill in handling saws and diagnosing every type of issue. You could become a product tester for Stihl. You have have the knowledge of their entire line of saws. With your experience and talent, you could make valuable suggestions to them. I can well imagine Stihl sending you their prototype saws for examination and testing. Leave a prototype outside in the rain and snow for a while and then see what happens to it...and tell Stihl your thoughts. 🙂
Compounding Problems 😩😳 Poor Saw How Can an Owner Treat and Neglect a baby STIHL Like This Erica 😮😮 The Captive Cover Bolts are Missing Too I Sometimes See It Too 😀 Now This 291 Was Shown Some Love ❤ And Is Happy Again 😀😊😊
GOODMORNING GREAT JOB ON FIXING AND DIAGNOSING THAT SAW ,I WAS WONDERING WHERE ABOUTS IN ONTARIO YOUR SHOP IS LOCATED ,,OUR FAMILY BUISNESS CORKYS ,SMALL ENGINE REPAIR ,IS IN BOBCAYGEON , ONTARIO , WE ARE A HUSQVARNA,,ECHO DEALER ,HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND ,LOVE WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS 😁👍
Hello, I enjoy watching the channel. Precise and to the point with a good level of description and visuals. Would you be able to explain the Stihl saw model letters and numbers? I’m curious if there is any correlation to performance or size or intended customer etc. Thanks! Keep the great content coming.
Great video as always. I know it’s going to be a good day whenever you post a new video! Be sure to clean and take care of that cut on your hand Erica.
Three screws won't line up with the air filter loose. Enjoy your vids Erica keep them coming. By the way Canada has sour crude oil, US has been fracking causing sweet crude oil. We have an option to run 91 octane no ethanol although it cost $0.50 a gallon higher
Ethanol free fuel for small engine use is the way to go. I also use it in my motorcycle that rests dormant for most of the year. Most people are not aware that a few gas stations care it. You have to be careful though. When I buy it, I put the first gallon or two in my car, then I fill my small engine gas cans. This purges out the fuel the previous patron bought out of the pump that may have contained ethanol.
❤LoL you've said it before when everyone runs the saws you don't know what you have they ride in the back in the rain and Dust. P.s you said your Gas don't last long how quick does it go bad thought it would last better up North
Erika, it much be great to be able to show customers video evidence of sometimes how stupid they have been and that poor maintenance comes at a cost. Great content as always. Thanks for posting.🇬🇧👍👍👍
Had a similar problem with my old Echo 500 that was difficult to pull that turned out to be the part in the recoil starter that holds the rope. The new part is metal whereas the original was plastic. That fixed that........then some other gremlins reared their ugly little heads. 👍🍻
If it's a road department saw, I'd guess the rust issue was caused by throwing it in the back of a truck that had salt in it. Moving/sliding around while raining as you said. The bottom handle looked to be wore down a LOT!
I'm sure that saw started shaking when the doctor snapped that glove on like that! Maybe it sensed an invasive procedure forthcoming? Bet it wished its owner looked after it better at that moment.
It’s hard to say which is more meticulous: your fault diagnostics or your filming/editing. Either way, it’s good that you seem to be getting the rapid increase in subscribers your meticulousness deserves. I’ve not worked out the purpose of the broad green tape I keep seeing on your customers’ machinery. Maybe I don’t keep seeing it, but keep seeing the same MS291 you’re currently working on in your to-do line.
Another abused chainsaw! Chainsaws can be finicky and need the care. If they get the care, they will perform. You should do a video on the Top 5 things to keep your chainsaw happy, healthy, and running great!
I'm sure you catch criticism about the way you talk about the condition of the customers chainsaw and lack of preventative maintenance that shows up at your shop. I'm a firm believer that after a day of running my saw it gets a good cleaning. Any man that has a chainsaw should have an air compressor. I get a kick out of the way you tell it like it is. Sometimes I think guys bring their saws just to clean it up for them. Let em have it, maybe they could get shamed into taking care of their equipment.
This saw was left out in the cold and had been fed a poor diet. It was used to being treated badly and thought your TLC was further abuse which is why it bit you. It then realised your good intentions and behaved. CPS should be alerted, and the owners made aware of their slack maintenance / parenting.😄
@, I think those are the best of the lot, I don’t know anything about the electronic or autotune. Really enjoy your work and tenacity, keep those videos coming,
I wonder if they don't have the torx driver for it. So, they managed to remove them with a screwdriver and then figured they would put some "good" screws in instead!
Interesting that they don’t care enough to do regular basic maintenance but are willing to let things get bad enough to need professional help. I don’t get it, what’s the difference between allowing someone the time and parts to do the maintenance compared to not doing so. Compared to paying a pro to do the maintenance and fit the parts for you. Mind it’s slightly telling, that whoever last fitted a plug, didn’t know how to correctly fit it. And the same for the air filter. Plus allowing employees to use a saw, with a defective chain-catcher.
I feel like this is a new case for CPS (Chainsaw Protective Services). I'll start a file. If CPS is hiring, I would like to apply. I'm most interested in the division that makes a personal visit to the perpetrator(s). The people who use that saw need an attitude adjustment. I will work for free. By the way, your right hand looks like it was bitten by a rabid beaver. Best take care of that before it festers. 😉
It must be hard to take, when you know that the saw is going back out for more abuse. If only these saw users cared enough to watch your show and learn something.
Nothing wrong with a quick and dirty blow off 😂. PS living in Australia I've never had the fuel issues you and the US get it shocks me how crappy your fuel is

James Condon in the US, Dean Doherty in Ireland and now I found Erica from Canada. Life is good.

Another great video Erica , loved the Dyson 😂 comparison, amazing how power equipment is treated badly. Great repair of another saw.

Super job indeed!!🥰🥰🍺💪🤘
That cut on your hand is a sign - to go out fishing
Love your shop helper...
XD
Hi Erica 👋 enjoyed your video 👍
Thank you! 🤗
Can the oiler be adjusted , my ms 291 doesn’t seam to put out much oil .
As far as I know , the 291 does not have an adjustable oiler and I don’t think you can buy a high volume oil pump for it.
Had a similar problem with my old Echo 500 that was difficult to pull that turned out to be the part in the recoil starter that holds the rope. The new part is metal whereas the original was plastic. That fixed that........then some other gremlins reared their ugly little heads. 👍🍻
Morning Erica
Good morning to you! Thank you for stopping by!
Great video hello from Scotland
File a Workman’s Compensation claim with the township for that hand injury.😉
If it's a road department saw, I'd guess the rust issue was caused by throwing it in the back of a truck that had salt in it. Moving/sliding around while raining as you said. The bottom handle looked to be wore down a LOT!
my 290 is super hard to pull cold choke on and new carb like it gets more comp.. cold what can i do i cant get a full pull on it >??
In sweden we use aspen fuel regular fuel is chrap in sweden to.
I'm sure that saw started shaking when the doctor snapped that glove on like that! Maybe it sensed an invasive procedure forthcoming? Bet it wished its owner looked after it better at that moment.
It’s hard to say which is more meticulous: your fault diagnostics or your filming/editing.

I’ve not worked out the purpose of the broad green tape I keep seeing on your customers’ machinery. Maybe I don’t keep seeing it, but keep seeing the same MS291 you’re currently working on in your to-do line.
Actually, I think I have worked out the reason. Don’t worry, your “secret” is safe with me.

"Someone's had a go at this..."
Tony was hard at work keeping an eye on you! LOL
I’m not sure if you’ve answered this question before, but why is the green tape on every saw? I don’t notice any writing on it as a reference.
I use tape to hide names , addresses, phone numbers etc.
Should have shown us the clutch removal process!!!
Use this money to buy Tony the tuxedo cat something nice. He clearly works hard at the shop. 😺
Thank you Ron!!
This saw was left out in the cold and had been fed a poor diet. It was used to being treated badly and thought your TLC was further abuse which is why it bit you. It then realised your good intentions and behaved. CPS should be alerted, and the owners made aware of their slack maintenance / parenting.😄
I would like to know what brand and model saws do find the most satisfying to repair?
I most enjoy fixing older saws .. 026, 034, 036, 038, 044 etc
How did you cut your hand?
The 271 bit me , the rabid thing!
SHOP KITTY 😸
Tacky bar oil and wood chips/dust. A tool that gets no love. Can have a nasty bite. But when it's time to cut wood, nothing better.
Why the green tape on some of the saws???
The green tape is covering people’s names , addresses , etc.
Drop drum in sonic cleaner !
🔥👍
24:37 I do love a quick and dirty blow-off.
we need a video from your co-star. he hasn't put in an appearance in 6 months. Did lawn mowers stop breaking down in ontario?
He will make an appearance again, very soon! :)
Love your work, Erica but may I suggest you start wearing disposable gloves - constant exposure to fuel and oil will wreck your skin - DAMHIK......
Everytime companys drop off saws, should be automatic service, it will go back and sit possibly

By the way, your right hand looks like it was bitten by a rabid beaver. Best take care of that before it festers. 😉
😂 Ron
Great. But is it normal that it's so hard to pull?
I got a feeling you just eyeball sparkplug gaps.
I'm pretty good at eyeballing spark plug gaps. NGK is spot on 99.9999% of the time.
It must be hard to take, when you know that the saw is going back out for more abuse. If only these saw users cared enough to watch your show and learn something.
Sorry I'm late... I'm sick in bed...
Oh, no!! Get well soon!
Nothing wrong with a quick and dirty blow off 😂. PS living in Australia I've never had the fuel issues you and the US get it shocks me how crappy your fuel is
Another saw back to live another day. I see you aren't on blood thinners otherwise you would bleed like a stuck pig, like I do!
you got a boo boo on your hand
Curious, what is your name if we’re not new here?🤓
😂
Is it just me or is Stihl getting cheap with the length of the cap keeper? Seems they're getting shorter with each generation of saw.
Veeeery poorly maintained saw and bunch of metal bits on piston..
In the communist country south of you, the Epa banned the adjustment hillery holes on the saw.
