Yeah, I would tell that particular customer to put that two/man saw where the sun don't shine. Anyone who would own an antique like that should make themselves familiar with how to tune it/fix it. I thought this was a joke at first, but it's still in the to-do queue.
The MS 170 was my first chainsaw, a gift from my Dad. I've definitely pushed mine to its limit (maybe beyond at times) but it's never failed me and runs like a champ. It's a great saw for sure.
When you need to rotate the bar you can hold the saw upside down and put the bar on right side up. Then when people tell you the bar was put on upside down you can tell them it was put on right the saw was upside down.
See that's why I love when you do videos on every saw because we learn something new every time. I really dig the Canadian accent I can hear your voice narrating a book on audible. I also love the sarcasm throughout and died laughing at chainsaw protective services
You are so thorough here in your work; my wife and I enjoy watching you! At my age, my chainsaw use has been corded electric Oregon CS1500 and I have cut two large black walnut trees up with it! I enjoy no starting or run problems with it and I take good care of it.
Hi Ericka Greetings from Costa Rica 🇨🇷 I have a MS180 purchased in September 2024. I saw many videos and the owners manual recommends grease the clutch needle bearing. Went to the dealer and they forced me to not buy the Superlub FS grease, because they swear the bearings must not be lube; I bought it anyways haha... As a contingency I lubed the bearing with a smal drop of grease and no issues at all. Thank you for all these great videos!!

I love this channel. I've been working on small engines (big ones too!) all my life, and although I never said I knew it all, I certainly FELT I knew most everything. Boy, was I wrong. Until I came to Married with Small Engines I never really understood the importance of pressure and vacuum testing the crankcase of a two-stroke. I realize now that it's a vital part of a diagnostic examination. And I suspect that many troublesome engines I've worked on over the years probably had crankcase seal issues. I'm ordering a Chinese clone (about Can$110) of your Stihl seal removal tool (about Can$500). I found one on Ebay and it looks plenty good enough even for professional use. I guess I'd better invest in the hand-pump too. It just goes to show we're never too old to learn something new. Keep up the good work, Erica! Cheers, from central British Columbia.
I have a new respect for the 170, such a capable little saw for sure. I had to laugh because i have a friend that loves his saws but has no clue how to use them. He has 60 acres of all trees and gets me to cut them when need be. I love my smaller stihls but he loves bragging with his 880 and yet cant carry it 😂 This was a great video Erica. I would be really interested to hear from someone who works on these everyday about the pros and cons of a saw this like vs the saw that replaced it. I believe you said the 162. This could apply to other saws too, like the Ms 400 vs the new 400.1 they are releasing soon.
Here in the UK, if your going to be working chainsaws in the forest you have to under go training. Think the initial course is six weeks then you have to consolidate it. The forestry company I work for then put you on update training courses every few years. You realise it’s a good idea when you see how some people cut down trees, some of the videos I’ve watched of people doing this are scary. Nice wee saws the 170’s.
Better buy one now if you can find one, I bought one this week and will be storing it as a spare. I already have a MS 170 and think they're such a great 8" or less saw. Plus I do like the double bar nuts instead of the new one bar nut on the new models. I do believe the MS170 has more power. Great vid's keep em coming. PS I find that the Stihl tensioner part is hard to come by, I suppose they're on back order :( .
Ditto to ArcheryDad2024! I upgraded my MS 10 with a side tensioner, opened the muffler, and advanced the timing. It runs great! Almost as if it was ported. I also run the Stihl Super (yellow dot) chains for better cutting efficiency. I use the 170 for the majority of my cutting; my 015 for limbing; the 031 for larger wood.

Currently have an MS250C and Echo CS-490, regret selling my MS170 for lighter work. Maintained, kept clean and ran at 40:1 it's surprising what it was capable of for an entry level saw.
I always learn from your MS170 videos, since I've had one for about a year. The high idle recommendation is noted, although I'm careless when starting it - I don't engage the brake. Ambient temperatures in South Africa mean we don't have to warm it too long before operation. It came with a 12-inch bar and I bought a 14-inch bar recently but saw there was a 16-inch bar on this saw. I have to check availability because that length makes sense.
The two-person Hornet that’s not started in 75 years and just needs a quick tune up is a nice bit of humour. Maybe the Guelph Civic Museum can help you out with parts!

I have a MS 181 then I was told MS 170 and MS 181's will no longer be sold here in Australia, so I brought 2 x MS 181's brand new still in there boxes off Stihl dealer ( my wife's place of work ) as there a great saw, I have seen the new one's Stihl have brought out and they look cheap and have short cuts for cheaper making of the saws, only one nut on the bar, thumbs down to that. I can not wait for that quick tune up and send it off to go cutting 70 plus year saw 🙂 love watching all your videos Erica.

I have a 170 amongst my collection and appreciate every bit of info you graciously provide us viewers Thumbs up everyone! 👍👍👍 I’m in SW Ontario, so my humble opinion on licensing for chainsaws….lol…the “good guys and gals” would abide by the rules of licensing for safe operation and maintenance of a chainsaw. There would still be those who wouldn’t abide by the rules and get a licence, would melt their crankcase, use old dirty diesel motor oil as bar lubricants , mix their fuel ratio improperly, and spill this same fuel near creek, ponds and streams without a second thought…then RETURN their chainsaw to dealers like yourself expecting warranty and full refund! 😡😡😡 all with reckless abandon. lol..ok I’m ranting, yes I have one of those neighbors. …keep up the great videos and thanks to you!
I need to change the crank case for my 029 super….ordered and aftermarket one and I’m not happy with it, I love my 029, I don’t think I’m putting this aftermarket case on it!😢

I never use the chain brake. I always start freely floating from my hands. For 50 years... I've always seen the chain brake as only an emergency thing, if you slip with your left hand.
I had the same problem with melted plastic on my 251 that I loaned to my uncle a few months ago. I thought it was because he ran it with a dull chain. At least I know now what actually happened.
The dull chain and therefore constantly slipping (and heating up) clutch is another reason for toasted saws. Once I had to grab a saw out of my dads hands, because he didn't even noticed the saw screeming in pain...😢

Agreed. There's absolutely no reason to use the chain brake, ever. It was invented and popularized just to satisfy company liability lawyers and regulators. My firewood saws are an early 70s Homelite XL-12, and a mid 80s Stihl 028AV and (horrors!) neither have chain brakes. Only the dumbest of backyard weekend warriors need to be protected from themselves.
Simple question.....why start the saw with the chain brake ON? Is it a safety issue for you or a shop rule? Like moving forward in a car with the e-brake on......
I start saws the way that Stihl recommends in the manual. There are a lot of first time chainsaw owners watching so I would like to show to safe, recommend starting procedure.
So Erica what is your thoughts about leaving gas in stihl chainsaws and trimmers for the winter. I doubt I will be using them in the cold climates. I've heard it both ways either leave the gas in or take it out. Last year I would start and let them run until they warmed up, once a month.
I like storing equipment away for the winter with canned fuel in them, we use Stihl canned fuel. Motomix in trimmers and saws, motoplus in our old tiller and generator. We have zero problems getting our stuff back up and running come spring.
Well, I have tried every grease including the thickest, tackiest wheel grease and every time I take the clutch drum off the bearing is dry with the clutch shoes covered in the grease. I now use spray silicone and a few drops of chain oil on it. No failures yet and the clutch shoes are dry.
I learn every video like the melting plastic seen that before what are the marks in the bore short horizontal lines at 7 :51 A license there are lots of people that have no idea and are a danger to themselves and others Maintenance ignorance is another issue some sort of competency training would be useful Where i live the forest industry has just such a program sure Canada does to Do you have a amazon store / link where you sell things like that bar dressing tool might be good little earner for you
What I don't understand is if the chain brake is on--then the clutch should not be spinning. If the clutch is not spinning how does it heat the brake band?
When the saw is in the high idle position, the engine is at a partially open throttle so, in turn, the clutch is trying to engage the drum which is being held by the brake band = lots of heat. The problem here occurs when the brake is set.
Thank you! I was over thinking this. The brake band is against the clutch drum. The high idle is causing the clutch to engage the clutch drum causing the clutch drum to heat up. THANK YOU!! You do a wonderful job with your videos and explanations. You are a very good teacher-- Mel
Putting a new chain, plug air filter, etc. plus your labour wouldn’t it be cheaper for the guy just to buy a new saw? I don’t work on any handheld equipment because most of it it’s just not worth it anymore
Hi Rodney. The work I performed on this saw can be completed in under 20 mins. Parts and labour, under $100. You can’t buy a new MS170 anymore , and he likes his saw and wants to keep it! 😊
Pretty soon people are gonna run out of trees to cut down. It’s an addiction. In the UK I see dozens and dozens of trees cut down on social media every day by tree “surgeons” could have been saved or reduced pruned properly. But simply just destroyed for laziness and convenience
This saw runs poorly, and I NEVER set the brake to start the saw. That's bad for clutch, chain brake and can cause housing melting. I just start the saw without it. The chain brake is emergency tool that's activated by kick back and that's the only use for it in my book...
Emergency activation of the chain brake by kickback is only one way the chain brake might prevent an injury. Setting the chain brake when starting the saw is a good practice. I know that's what Stihl recommends and they are the ones who designed the saw. Tons of people set the chain brake when starting the saw. Makes good sense to me as long as you kick the idle down as soon as it starts.
Why the hell do people start their saws with brake on? Are they affraid their saws will ran from them to Mexico? Do not think too much about safety. If you do then chain saws are not for you.
Not afraid. Up a tree or felling, that startup torque WITHOUT the brake on ( since Dimitry always drop starts 😢😢) can and will slice your femoral artery without a care. P.S. It's "BRAKE". That's "why the hell". And, one ER visit will spoil your day. No macho with real saws.

With a MS170, check the basics. Fuel, spark arrestor, air filter, spark plug. Check the piston and cylinder for damage.

I just use a little bit of all purpose grease. The same grease you use in the bar tip gun. Just a little bit.
Well, I have tried every grease including the thickest, tackiest wheel grease and every time I take the clutch drum off the bearing is dry with the clutch shoes covered in the grease. I now use spray silicone and a few drops of chain oil on it. No failures yet and the clutch shoes are dry.

What I don't understand is if the chain brake is on--then the clutch should not be spinning. If the clutch is not spinning how does it heat the brake band?
When the saw is in the high idle position, the engine is at a partially open throttle so, in turn, the clutch is trying to engage the drum which is being held by the brake band = lots of heat. The problem here occurs when the brake is set.

A dealer may explain this, and I’m sure the manual explains it as well.
If someone doesn't know how to operate the chainsaw and to flip the bar, that person doesn't deserve to own a chainsaw...

It accelerates poorly, don't know is it because of fuel or what, but not really snappy throttle response..

Putting a new chain, plug air filter, etc. plus your labour wouldn’t it be cheaper for the guy just to buy a new saw?
I don’t work on any handheld equipment because most of it it’s just not worth it anymore
Hi Rodney. The work I performed on this saw can be completed in under 20 mins. Parts and labour, under $100. You can’t buy a new MS170 anymore , and he likes his saw and wants to keep it! 😊

Pretty soon people are gonna run out of trees to cut down. It’s an addiction. In the UK I see dozens and dozens of trees cut down on social media every day by tree “surgeons” could have been saved or reduced pruned properly. But simply just destroyed for laziness and convenience

This saw runs poorly, and I NEVER set the brake to start the saw. That's bad for clutch, chain brake and can cause housing melting. I just start the saw without it. The chain brake is emergency tool that's activated by kick back and that's the only use for it in my book...
Emergency activation of the chain brake by kickback is only one way the chain brake might prevent an injury. Setting the chain brake when starting the saw is a good practice. I know that's what Stihl recommends and they are the ones who designed the saw. Tons of people set the chain brake when starting the saw. Makes good sense to me as long as you kick the idle down as soon as it starts.
Why the hell do people start their saws with brake on? Are they affraid their saws will ran from them to Mexico? Do not think too much about safety. If you do then chain saws are not for you.
Not afraid. Up a tree or felling, that startup torque WITHOUT the brake on ( since Dimitry always drop starts 😢😢) can and will slice your femoral artery without a care. P.S. It's "BRAKE". That's "why the hell". And, one ER visit will spoil your day. No macho with real saws.
