Good Morning, Friends! Thank you for spending a small part of your day with me! I hope you enjoy this video about a little Stihl MS170 that hasn't ran in years! I am busy in the shop today repairing saws and making more videos for you! Please - Like and Subscribe! It helps grow the channel and will help me make more videos for you all! Sit back and enjoy! Have a fantastic Sunday!!
Thanks Erica ❤🎉. For showing these videos. Really enjoy watching your videos. I had a MS170 for years. It really did me well. I gave all my saws to my Brother as my Chain Saw days are over after suffering a Heart Attack and 3x Brain Strokes. Just lay in bed and watch your videos now. Thank You From Geoff in Melbourne Victoria Australia 🦘.
Good one! When it started the first time, I thought it was running like the brake was on! I think it was the bent bar! She’s a ripper now !! Awesome job!
I would like to see you fix the saw that was twice to the other shop. It would be fun to see what they missed. That saw needs your methodical approach!
Yet another great video. When I clean spark arrestors I heat them up cherry red with a propane torch and once they cool off an old tooth brush, nylon brush, or a brass brush very easily removes whats left of the carbon. The plus is its not as messy of a task that way.
After watching many of your videos, I realize that a clean chainsaw is a happy chainsaw. You should do a video on how to clean certain parts like the bar, the recoil, etc. I have seen others soaking plastic parts.
I love the content you put surrounding the actual fix of the chainsaw It just gives the video an extra notch of quality Thank you again for making these
I have a 170 since 2014. It has cut more than I should have for the size of saw it is. I have had to change out the caps several times because of leaking. The clutch cover once and the bar twice because of stupidity by not lining up the oiler rod. Still runs like it should. Last year bought a new stihl 250 but I have a hard time pull starting it. Live and learn. Your videos are great to watch and learn. Thank you! Ever use Tub O Towels, great for cleaning up your hands and workbench.
Ha, I've had a 250 for more than a decade and no problem pulling it. Then I bought another one 2 years ago, I could not pull it to start. Took it back, the tech was a 20-somtething guy and he even had trouble. So he traded me a 251C Easy Start. At 78 years old, that saves my shoulder.
Thx for the 170 tips. It's my "emergency" saw and for getting into blowdown branches to the trunk for bucking. Your tutorial showed me what to do that I never did on this saw. MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!
Great job. Very methodical. That's why I subscribed a while back. Continued success. Can't wait to see your husband work on other equipment on his side of your shop.
I always enjoy watching you fix them up and real clean. This would be a good time of year to go into that back room and do a real loud and sudden scare. 😊😊
We definitely have spark arresters in the US. My mom actually threw away a Husqvarna BT130 due to a plugged spark arrester before I started working on small engines. Her current BT130 had constant issues with the spark arrester before I deleted it. It's 8 years old with over 2000 hours on it, and it is still going strong.
Thank you for posting this excellent video. I was watching you start the engine and each time you yanked he starter cord, I told myself...someone needs to invent a way to electric start that engine. That would save a heck of a lot of stress. Especially on you, since you have to start saws probably more than any one.
nawww, people pay good money to gyms to do exactly what she's doing starting the saws. And she's got help on the big nasty ones so they get their workout in too.
Thank you again for another awesome video. I would love to be a fly on the wall when some ignorant customer wants to talk over you or wants to talk to a "man" about what's wrong with their saw. We look forward to the next video. Tell Mr Chainsaw hello
Interesting video, I surf garage sales for Stihl saws. I've had many that I've bought for little or nothing. Better then half of them the problem was a plugged spark arrester. Great video Erica. Dave in MO
I’m not exactly sure about spark arrestors laws but I think it’s a state by state deal. In Louisiana we were not allowed to run any saws during last year’s Extreme Drought in selected parishes. We are currently under a burn ban but can run saws. We are supposed to have them but you know how that goes. Fun show as always, thanks.
Well now this is a interesting video and you did such a good job on cleaning that ms170 up. It never ceases to amaze me about the neglect at people subject their chainsaws to. Also, it always amazes me how cheap an air filter that Stihl puts on that ms170.
Hello I saw problems with the Sparkarrestor in another Video. Its easy to clean, and easy to detect. in Germany its the same with the prices. You can get a new one, the latest from the latest for 190 Euro, ore a used one for 180Euro I dont know what the are thinking? Who pays this? What i like is that you can tune it a little bit.Another Carburator, a Muffler Modifikation and the side Chain tensioner, and you have a good swa. Thanks for the Video, i liked it.And Yes, i subscribed for about two weeks!!!
A wee bit of Erica magic and it’s running like a good un. Has he been using the bar as a lever? Good video again. Oh our cat wouldn’t step in that puddle, he doesn’t go out it’s raining unless he’s desperate😁
Nice work 👍 What I would like You to have is a bit more ergonomic place to clean the equipment at backdoor. I guess you are doing that procedure very often for many chainsaws..
I said the same thing. A utility sink, compressed air, and a parts degreaser/cleaner with an ergonomic table to work on would make life so much easier and do a better job. That being said, you do a better job of delivering a clean saw to the customer than many of the others I've seen. A clean saw is a happy saw! Q. You put a new bar on it with the old chain. Did you sharpen the chain? Maybe that's a given, like the free car wash when you take your car to the dealer? 🤣Maybe it's so routine that you don't waste video time on it...
That saw looks and runs great now. Like others said I use a torch to clean the spark arrestor screen. Looking forward to videos on that Husky and the saw thats been to 2 other shops.
It's only six years old, and it hasn't run in years, smh. It's amazing to me that people spend good money on equipment and fail to maintain it. I recently trash picked a Craftsman self propelled mower with a Briggs 6.25 (my favorite engine). Someone had thrown this mower away because the engine would not make a full turn. When I flipped it over to turn the blade by hand, there was about two inches of hardened grass buildup all the way around the underside of the deck. It was so thick that it was preventing the blade from turning. I cleaned the underside of the deck, and it fired right up. I didn't spend a single penny or replace a single part. This mower was thrown away simply because they never cleaned it, lol.
Hi Erica great video as always I’m slowly watching all your videos on here all incredibly informative and you go go into great detail. BTW did you get to the bottom of where you got the torch from definitely can’t see anything like that here. Tnx
I have a similar looking cat but he isn’t allowed outside. But I have to keep the toilet lid down and after a shower he jumps into the wet tub. He also dips his paw into his water bowl. I threaten to put holy water into the bowl and he would probably explode.
Most likely they are not running it at full throttle like you should. I see it a lot on weed eaters and blowers where people run them a lot at part throttle.
Yes, not running full throttle, running with a dirty air filter can do it too. Maybe running to rich of an oil mix. A lot of saws come in with filthy air filters and poorly mixed fuel - and a lot of people don't realize that these engines want to rev out at full RPM, they try to take it easy on them by only feathering the throttle. Stihl FS38's are common for plugged on spark arrestors as well.
@@marriedwithsmallengines how does not reving to full throttle when cutting effect cooling . Is there a tipping point where not running it with high enough rpm to get max air flow verses half throttle and not getting enough air flow to cool it?
Hey Erica I also seen a trick where you could take a lighter or a lil torch, and clean the lil screen the same way and I think you can spray brake to loosen the carbon and or and old tooth brush as well . What about running it over a wire wheel on a bench grinder with a pair of vice grips or Robo grips. Or just use a lighter or torch.
There a great little saw I often seen and use them for cutting small branches and cutting out hodges and there great in tight places if you're cutting branches should put a light in the storage space in case something happens
Can you use brake cleaner and compressed air to clean the oil and sawdust or is that bad? Do you recommend using only ZEP or other heavy duty de-greasers?
You can, brake cleaner might be hard on the plastics though. I’m experimenting with ZEP, but any good degreaser is just fine :) There could be something better then ZEP out there.
@@marriedwithsmallengines I used to use Simple Green but found ZEP to be a little better de-greaser. I'll stay away from using brake cleaner. By the way, I'm one of those who cleans my Stihl chainsaws after every use 😀
I don't have a spark arrester in my MS390 in UK. I thought they had missed it at the factory as I've had it from new. So maybe we don't have them fitted here.
Not to nitpick, but normally when you clean one you usually pull the recoil in your other videos. It might have been cleaner than the clutch side but maybe not. Still enjoy the process.

Seems like if you have sparks coming out of the saw, you shouldn’t be using it.

Glad you enjoyed it!
Use a blowtorch on the spark arrester, quick and saves all that mess.
I was going to say the same thing. Way faster and no mess .
Even in our overregulated Germany we don’t need spark arrestors and I‘not aware of any fires caused by chainsaws.

I do the same using Super Clean in the purple bottle. For a deep clean I use a high pressure nozzle on the water hose after it soaks in the degreaser.

The question I have with all the carbon build up is why? Rich mix? Not running it long enough or high enough rpm and getting it hot to burn it off?

Erica if a saw is not going to be used for some time, in your opinion is it better to run it dry first, or store it with Motomix in it.
I like storing with Motomix if the saw is gong to be sitting. I have had very good luck doing this.

Spark arrestors are fitted in Australia. I don't know what the law says, but it is highly recommended to keep it in and maintain it.
I hope you do the MS 260. I just purchased this saw....
Coming up soon!
Those could be wood fibers tangled around the clutch shafts
