Hi Everyone! Thank you so much for being here! Happy Thanksgiving! I apologize in advance - I was a ill during the making of this video, but I tried my best to get to it done for you. I hope you all enjoy this little story about a Stihl MS361 that worked right until the end, without being cared for. Let me know in the comments - do you own or have you owned a MS361? I like these saws, and I intend to bring this saw back to the bench when time allows! I'll see you in the comments, Thank you!! Please like this video! It really helps!
I just bought a ms 361. I had it in the shop to be repaired. It would run while cold, but when warm, it wouldn't run at all. > had the coil replaced now, and it runs great. Steve, from Pennsylvania.
53 seconds and already 3 likes, you would almost think people couldn't wait for these uploads, and we can't coz they are great, informative and entertaining 👍
I can only imagine how much work these professional grade Stihl saws could do if they were serviced regularly. Twenty years on no maintenance is staggering. Great work Erica.
You need to see how much and how hard they have been working. The block of engine is undestroyable on these but there were things going wrong all the time and I mean all the time. Now I’m using 362 and I have to push boundaries a lot because they need us to. Running great so far absolutely no issue whatsoever…
This is a testament to the quality of the Sthil brand , i bought a new MS 361 back in the spring of 09 . I cut approx. 3-4 full cord of firewood annually. It has had regular maintenance and after 15 years runs as good as ever . Take care and feel better . Bob
For all the people that gripe about the plastic front handle, this one has stood the test of time. I have one of these and it is a good saw. Choked muffler from the factory and mine runs much better since I added a second port on the flywheel side. But, since I bought a 550xp g this saw only does back up duty now. Another informative video!👍
I will start the file for C.P.S. (Chainsaw Protective Services). We will have to determine if he should be allowed to buy another chainsaw. I am doubtful. By the way, thanks for letting Lily the shop cat have a cameo in the video! The scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark was appreciated as well!
Glad to be the first one, waiting on pins and needles to see you tackle that big saw . I know you will have it purring like a kitten. Mr Chainsaw gonna pay the price for messing with the flashlight
I've got a 361 with a 24 inch bar and I really like that saw. I've got spare air filters and chains that go with me every time I cut. I went through the process of taking off the covers and cleaned it up nice a few years ago. I keep the chain sharp with one of those Pferd all in one sharpening tools. That sharpening tool and dressing/squaring the bar with a bar file has my saw cutting as good or better than new. A little bar maintenance goes a long way with making fast straight cuts and limiting how hot the chain gets. I also have a 180. I cut recreationally with my personal saws for camp wood or at friends places where they have trees to take down and process. This saw pairing works great for me and we made short work of a down pine tree with the 2 saws this last spring. I need to run some fuel through them this weekend to keep them from developing any problems. They do sit a lot. At work when I have spare time I am working on one of our 250's that was "not worth repairing" and came back to the shop in a box mostly disassembled. It had a bad crank seal. I've got the new seals and a few other parts and the saw is all prepped to go back together. It's a fun task and I'm hopeful it will return to our lineup working well when I am done. Part of my job is to cut drift off of our structures so our saws take a beating in dirty wood and do surprisingly well with how much water exposure they get. The 044s we have really shine cutting drift. Your videos really helped me understand saws better, gave me methodology to test Vac and pressure and helped with gaining the knowledge to take on more in depth saw repair. I really appreciate gaining that knowledge through you and appreciate these incredibly informative videos you make. Thank you!
Wow. Sad day for me. Feel bad that you were sick and a second MS361 might be done for. With the bad luck that I have, it’s no surprise that of all the videos I’ve watched of yours, you are sick while working on the one I’m most interested in. But I am getting a little irritated because I was told the whole saw had to be taken apart to replace the crank seals and you really didn’t have to, to replace them. If the crank bearings were good, looks like you would have replaced them. Thank you for this. Might have to look at maybe someone else in my area might be able to get this fixed and I won’t have to scrap it. Awesome video.
Well, I just showed you how easy it is to get to the crank seal. If a shop told you it requires taking the whole saw apart to replace a crank seal, you should get a second opinion. If they know it's leaking, that means they are already at the seal. I wished you lived closer - I would help you out!
@ Yes, I wish I lived closer, too. You definitely would be the one I would want to have working on it. You do awesome job. I wish I had the funds to have you fix it, or at least look at it. But after spending around $1300 in the last 3 months on two new saws, my wallet won’t let me, lol. I don’t know if I want that shop to do anymore work for me. I’m a little irritated. Don’t know if they just didn’t want to work on it, I don’t know. I have to decide if I want to scrap it or save it and maybe try and find someone locally who knows about them and can fix it reasonable. I only have so much funds, lol. You are awesome. If you work on that 361 down the road, hopefully you make a video of it. I’m ready to see the video on that hornet, lol.
Thanks for this - you're so good. The way you approach a diagnosis is so logical, well reasoned and methodical. It's good for "regular guys" like us to see and learn from your approach!
Erica! The next time you catch a cold, boil a whole chicken, debone it, add rice, and let cook until ready. Eat a lot of it. You will feel better soon after. BTW, I only share my recipe with special chainsaw people, and you qualify. ❤
My grandmother had a treatment for a cold. You had to have honey, lemon juice, sugar, and a half pint of whiskey. In a glass mix the honey, sugar, and lemon juice. Then throw all of that junk in the trash can and drink the whiskey.
Great content! Just one thing: if the pressure/vac tester you have there says LTR on the gauge it was probably made by Leitenberger rather than Mityvac/SKF. I have this Stihl test kit and it says LTR on the gauge. I think it is better quality than recent Mityvacs.
Love the useless little tidbits of information! That's why RUclips content creators videos are so much fun to watch for us chain saw NERDS! Hope you get well soon!
Hay,,hope ya get well again soon...luve that you are a constint diagnostic of the cause of faults,,.your work is well worthy ..very good mechanic girl..xxx.
Interesting like allways, this saw need to go to hospital for a heavy surgery. Was sucking air from the fuel line, and cranck seal, that's why impossible to idle. As a professional, not worth to fix it, but it's interesting to keep parts. The line of chainsaws waiting for Erica's care is growing faster and faster, because she is showing a so good job, people are confidente on her expertise !
I've replaced the front buffer with rubber ones on two of these 361's. Better than the foam buffers Stihl puts in there. These REALLY are nice saws. My cousin bought one for $150, the guy he bought it from was throwing parts at it (cheap parts) when all that was wrong with it was the guy had an aftermarket fuel line in it that just kinked and wouldn't allow much if any fuel through. $20 fuel line and it ran perfectly.
Hey, How are you doing today? I am doing good myself. I am sorry to hear that you were sick with a cold, but I am glad to hear that you are feeling better now. I hope that you take care until next time and I can't wait to see your next new video, And I am also your latest channel member
Just a thought, on some of the saws that you box up you could put them on eBay with a list of problems . Or you could fix . But either way you would have to sign them. And see what they would bring at auction. It could be fun..
Happy Thanksgiving! I just had a 361 on the bench. It was leaking at the base of the cylinder. The guy took out the gasket to try to raise his compression. 😅
“There’s probably a lot of saws back there,I’d better go have a look….”😂 Yes,with people doing that kind of maintenance I’d imagine the graveyard is stacking up. It is mind boggling to see that kind of abuse when a saw costs several hundred dollars and it’s SO easy to do basic stuff. The mentality doesn’t compute. “More money than brains” comes to mind.
Happy Thanksgiving. This is the video I’ve been waiting for. But I can’t watch it until tomorrow. Don’t anybody ruin it for me, lol. My MS361 is back in my garage, but in pieces. No longer able to run. Can’t wait for tomorrow to watch the video.
Hi Erika, when are you going to start work on the vintage Hornet? Its been in the que for a while now and I am sure many of us want to see that machine, its challenges and quirks. The rest of the modern machines are fine too but seeing the old ones every now and then is interesting. Thanks Erika!🐞

The plan is to fix it up once work slows down here. It is nice to work on my own saws during slower times - off the clock. It takes the pressure off and It doesn't matter how long it takes me :)
Fix that saw! As a saw collector ( hoarder) I fix them with the intent of selling if I can. I have sold many but most just want to spend a lot of money and buy new to say that they have a lot of money.

Happy Thanksgiving, Beautiful. Hope you get some rest.
Happy Thanksgiving, Erica - hope you feel better soon! Nice to see the barrier cream in use! Take care!

It must be hard to refrain from just diving in and rebuilding saws like that to make them like-new again. Great video again. Get well soon.
Thanks 👍
Hi Erica. I love bagpipes and Scottish bands! Another great video. Hope you’re feeling better. Get well soon! 👍👍👍👍

This young lady is amazing. Wonderful work and educational videos 👍
Ya gotta admit, that carb stand Scott sent ya is pretty nifty with that magnetic parts holder in the back.
Erica Jones and the Saw of Destiny!

I have a 39 year old 028 Stihl that has never been touched by a tech, but it still runs great.
That is amazing! I love those old 028's! :)
@marriedwithsmallengines it's a great saw. I think after getting tips from your videos I'm going to tackle putting in new fuel line and filter.
Glad you’re feeling better I had the same cold 3 weeks ago that lasted 5 days. I binged watched
your videos when I was sick..
I have an MS361 in my stables, and it's one of my favorites! That poor old saw, it really needs some TLC!!!
It sure does!!

Ah, nice. A short clip from the Scottish enclave in Canada, love it!
Kilts are my favorite legwear, I tend to wear them all year long...
Way to start the video with a little cheer and be thankful for being thankful!
Thank you for being here!
Good diagnosis that saw needs alot of work, a good winter project 😊
I sure hope that you make a video of that old two-man saw. Love your videos. I've learned a lot
get well soon Erica !! thx for my daily powersaw fix :P
My pleasure!!
I would love to see a full rebuild! I've done pretty much everything other than a bottom end rebuild on a pro style saw.
Great video as always but above all take care of that cold!!!
Thank you! 😊 feeling quite a bit better now.
Thumbs up,feel better, stash it away till you get free time to fix it up,great video
Thank you!😊
I have an ms381, great saw.
I’ve got one of those and it’s a beast
Your the best I like watching you I learn so much
Another awesome video, great work thank you Erica
Great vid Erica! I always wondered why old 361’s fetched such a high price here!
Hope you feel better. Love your channel
Another great video, thank you.
I have a shindawia 591 with the 20.inch bar
Happy thanksgiving to you and your family. Best wishes and thanks for posting always learning nice seeing an expert at work
Thank you!
Happy Thanksgiving.
Crazy to think that saw has never been touched except for the coil.
Great content!

I love Erica time, it's always a good time to see and learn. It's my time to learn from a professional. Crank seal under the pull rope cover.
I think the oil bubbles show up, because it had some soapy water in the area, or that got near the seal.
Hi Erica 🎄 Thankyou for showing us the Santa Clause 🎅 🧑🎄 parade

Sorry, but I would have to disagree. Compared with the cost of a replacement, I would fix it. Especially considering it’s resale value these days.
Glad feeling a pinch better!
I've replaced the front buffer with rubber ones on two of these 361's. Better than the foam buffers Stihl puts in there. These REALLY are nice saws.

Hi Cory! Thank you so much!! 😊
@@marriedwithsmallengines Your welcome!
Awesome methodical diagnosis. I really enjoyed it. Looks like my project pile! Thanks!
Picking up your husband's hoarding tenancies? 😉
That crank seal air leak demo was excellent btw.
Enjoyed your video, waiting to see the rebuild of that saw.get well, see you on the next episode.cheers
I support Loin Club since I was kid because I has disabled (Cerebral Palsy)
Just a thought, on some of the saws that you box up you could put them on eBay with a list of problems . Or you could fix . But either way you would have to sign them. And see what they would bring at auction. It could be fun..
bet cylinder gasket..or crank seals or both....nice video
Happy Thanksgiving! I just had a 361 on the bench. It was leaking at the base of the cylinder. The guy took out the gasket to try to raise his compression. 😅
get well soon
I am feeling much better! 5 days ago was not so good.
Did you get COVID bc I got a few weeks ago. It sux but it will pass
😆😆
happy thanksgiving to you and your family from indiana USA
hope you have a happy thanksgiving, and I hope you get better soon
Nice video my friend keep it up 😊
Thank you 👍
“There’s probably a lot of saws back there,I’d better go have a look….”😂 Yes,with people doing that kind of maintenance I’d imagine the graveyard is stacking up. Do you hone before adding rings on the small 2 cycle engines?
I don't, stay tuned for part 2 of this saw and I will show you.
When looking at the exhaust block for leak how do you see in behind and under that rubber piece?
Peek behind if there is leak you can usually spot it
Happy Thanksgiving. This is the video I’ve been waiting for. But I can’t watch it until tomorrow. Don’t anybody ruin it for me, lol. My MS361 is back in my garage, but in pieces. No longer able to run. Can’t wait for tomorrow to watch the video.
See you tomorrow!

In my opinion 361 needs completely cleaning split the case new bearing seals gaskets. All oem parts
Treated like a disposable object
It was, and now it's in my orphanage. I will order the parts I need to fix it and bring this saw back to life.
I suppose it’s a proof of original build, that with so little maintenance, the saw made it this far. But that with the knowledge of past level of maintenance, one has to wonder how long his 362 will last. One thing’s for sure, it won’t be a saw worth passing on to his children.
Going to be cool to see a Frankenstein or Phoenix episode with some of those saws in the back. Another great video.
Another one bites the dust, or has it? Great video, though! Can't wait to see it return someday.
What tool was that to get the flywheel off?
It looks different than the Stihl one I ordered for my 362c.
Oh, hello Shoplion...
Good video, what is the brand/model of your vacuum/pressure tester. Get lots of rest. You will feel better.
Too many problems to pay shop rates for fixing but it sounds like he was already drooling on a new saw. BTW, I guessed base gasket because it seemed to lose pressure and vacuum about the same.
Roughly how many hours of work estimated to clean and repair?
Awesome video on the 361. I just checked the born-on-date on mine, which is 02-09, and it's still running strong. That's my go to firewood saw here in AK.
Edit: what do you think of the newer air filter that's a white color, like a fine mesh? I think part #1135C..
42:00 that saw looks like a turkey carcass after the carving is done.
Intake boot or Pulse Port Hose 😀 Is My Guess Erica Wow That Crank Seal Was Gushing Bubbling Crude Under Pressure 😮😮😮
I hate the owners like this one!!
Happy Thanksgiving.
re saw storage area clip- can we discuss your wooden crate requirements? let's make a deal! 8^) (just joking, great gag.) I enjoyed the video. Cheers!
Send it to me with all the required replacement parts, my labour is free and even if the parts are $500 plus shipping to Alberta, it would be money well spent.
The plan is to fix it up once work slows down here. It is nice to work on my own saws during slower times - off the clock. It takes the pressure off and It doesn't matter how long it takes me :)
👍
Why would you not clean/service your work tool??😵💫😵💫?Well done you for finding the problem,,💪💪..Have a good wk end!!🍺🍺🤘🤘
I’d be ashamed if I let me 361 get in that kind of shape…😢
Fix that saw! As a saw collector ( hoarder) I fix them with the intent of selling if I can. I have sold many but most just want to spend a lot of money and buy new to say that they have a lot of money.
I have so many saws to bring back to the bench once I get caught up! :) So Exciting!
You can send it to me and I'll byuy the parts to rebuild it. As it. I could really use a good rebuilt saw.
I am planning to fix it up this winter and I will bring you all along to watch!
У меня new такая есть
Had the problem of stihl bad bearings due to plastic bearing seals failing and destroying the entire bearing and seal a Stihl problem a saw Killer as it ruined the crankshaft.
I'm here..
Yah!
I bet both seals..
both crank seals.
Fix it and all buy it

You shouldn't be allowed to wreck a saw with neglect and just buy a new one. So wasteful.
