- This vintage Stihl 036 PRO chainsaw was dropped off at my shop for repair.
The Stihl 036 replaced the Stihl 034 PRO. The Stihl 036 was eventually replaced by the Stihl MS360, than the MS361. Finally, the current model is called the Stihl MS362 which is still in production. In Canada, a new Stihl MS362 sells new for approximately $1100.
The customer states that this beautiful saw was found in storage and it last ran over 20 years ago. He noticed that the fuel line is soft and mushy. He would like this saw gone over completely and put back into service.
Well, you know what this means! Grab a coffee and a comfy seat - this is a long one! Come along with me! Let's jump in and go through this saw to see what all it needs before it starts it's second life as a firewood saw!

On behalf of vintage Stihl lovers everywhere, thanks for saving this beauty!
Thank you!!
I for one sure appreciate your no nonsense, professional, thoughtful approach to your expelling steps in saw diagnosis and repair. no guessing, no shortcuts repairs done properly the way they should be done to bring machines back to full potential operating condition. having to rely on firewood to keep from freezing in winter I rely on my old still saws and every chance I get to bring home old pro series Stihl saws no matter what condition as long as they are inexpensive and work on putting them back in service.
Thank you!
Nothing like watching someone who loves what they do working - Thank you for taking us along for the ride.
@@29chevbolenschannel40 thank you so much for watching!!
What a pleasure to see a full rebuild of a sleeping beauty of a big pro saw. Wishing you well, good lady. Bob in Montana
Your videos are very professional - you do not introduce any unnecessary comments, no unnecessary stories, no unnecessary jokes - a specific focus on solving the problem. I love the way you run your channel💝
can't wait for that 2 man saw video
She's killing me
You do a fine job for your customers. I wish every shop was as good.
Thanks 👍
I’m new to fixing small engines. That leak test with the oil is cool. I’m stealing that idea. Thanks for posting.
Well there it is! I always wished there was a little section at the end showing the saw cutting some wood. Thank you! Btw, thanks for the shots of the fireplace in some of the videos. My wife gets cold down here in Florida when it's 50-60. you mentioned -40 😄 Now I know she (and I ) couldn't make it up north. Just one time I want my wife and kids to see snow. maybe one day!
Thank you for being here!
lol. I gotta 22 yr old dodge truck that I’m still driving! Works well too. Touch wood….Hey! You didn’t throw the spark plug box down on your work table! lol.
Great video Erica! You are a Great teacher! I greatly appreciate you as a teacher….reminds me of my auto tech teacher in high school whom I still respect to this day, May he rest in peace. Oh memories! Consider a side job…or a new job??? ….teaching high school, college or university courses in small engines repair?? You have a great talent in these repairs and instructional! Thumbs up everyone. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much!! 🙏
@keegantimber8571 I think we should all take a shot when Erica says "Gapped properly".
The 036 Pro is one of the best saws Stihl ever made. That saw should be an absolute champ after the amazing work you did on it. Should be one happy customer.
Thanks 👍
Satisfying video. New life to an old saw. Not chucking it in the garbage pile. Nowing there's a problem, shutting the saw down. Beautiful job with the rebuild. Saw looks new again😮. 🍻 cheers to the second life Mr. Stihl 036. ❤
Thanks 👍
What a fabulous video. This isn't a repair it's a restoration. You have done a tremendous job! I love restoring things instead of throwing them away. I've done cars, motorcycles, clocks, woodworking and engineering tools tools, washing machines, you name it!! and my particular favourite old valve radios (done them from as far back as 1938)!
Keep up the wonderful videos.
Best wishes

Very nice channel. No annoying intro music, no bull. Just good shop procedures, high-quality work, nice camera work, effective editing, and very helpful information. Your calm, steady approach to the job at hand is refreshing. I subscribed soon after discovering your channel.
Wow, thanks!
Nice...that's a great looking saw...you gave it the care it needed...
33:29 Another good reason to diagnose before cleaning is that dirt patterns can be a clue to the issue. Same goes for electronic PCB repairs - if you clean the board before you inspect it, you might remove the indications of which part has failed.
You talked about your other 036 Rental video, and I can see the same thing with this one: nasty oily mess with evidence of the oil being flung away from the shaft. I was quite surprised when the clean flywheel side was the leak, and not the dirty clutch side.
edit: Calling a hammer a swing press? I like your sense of humor a little bit more now!
Hi Erica. Hope your are all doing well. In my opinion the 036 and 044 were the best chainsaws of the day.
😊👍
Nice job Erica customers in your area should be blessed to have you because of the top notch service you provide.. 20k subscribers and climbing congratulations
Excellent Diagnosis Erica I Worked on Those Saws When They Were Still In Common Use in 2002 and Still See Them To This Day 😀 The 036 and 036 Pro and The MS-020T and MS-200T And 046 Magnum Still Reigned Supreme😎😀😊
Love the old saws! Thanks for bringing it back to life!
Should send my 015 up there for a video, its a real old one, runs fine, but has its moments
Ain't nothing better than a good running 036! Can hardly wait till you get to put the one you have on the shelf! Then you can have one for your self!
Waaaaw!... very very good job! Absolutely impressive 💯👍thank you
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I was once given an old Husqvarna 162 SE that had sat with fuel for so long that the fuel hose had actually melted and was a puddle in the bottom of the tank with an old fuel filter stuck in the puddle. I gave it a rebuild( new hoses, seals, carb rebuild) and still have it and even after all this time it still smells like turpentine from that old gas when I start it up. It's just a shop decoration, but I still start it a few times a year. My favorite cleaner to spray on is "Purple Power", that stuff usually takes all the grease up quickly!
My dad had one of those 036 pros, gave it to my cousin he cut wood. It was a great saw he said👍
Thanks for sharing this great video! Nothing better than seeing an old saw come back to life!
Couldn't agree more!
I have an 038 super AV. Has no spark. I am glad to learn how to thoroughly inspect. Thank you for being so detailed and great at explaining processes.
Those fasteners are yellow dichromate coated for corrosion resistance. That treatment is great. Nice job! I'm binge watching. Thanks!
You make me feel old. I bought a brand new 036 pro as my first professional grade saw.
I don't to make you feel old :) Sometimes, older is better!
I gotta go out in the shed and see if mine are still there
024 super, 025 and 026. One I got out of a dumpster. Oiler on the 024 super not putting out allot od oil nearly enough it seams. Took the feed tube out of the tank three times and it's clear. Vent clear with an air gun. Tried a new used orig pump and a plastic 026 65mm stroke pump. Ugh. Still got low flow what the heck.
Try replacing the vent. If though it is clear it can offer enough restriction to prevent the oil pump from drawing from the tank.
Milwaukee
Have a 260 pro 360 pro and 361 Arctic - fantastic saws, worth every penny to keep them going although the 362’s are tempting to try!
these full builds r super fun and what a lucky dude having that beast back in action !!
Excellent work! Thank you Erica.
Thank you!
Bought my 036 in 1992. Gets used yearly for firewood and tree cutting. Handle is metal but not steel, adjustable oiler, and original fuel lines. Running a 25” Rollomatic ES Light bar. And yes the carb is ZAMA Hong Kong and never been apart. Probably due🤔
What a nice chainsaw you brought back to life. You made it look easy. Thanks for showing me how it's done.
Thanks 👍
Wise move replacing the clutch side seal. For the price of the seal and labour when you are already that far, it's a no-brainer. Love your videos from Peterborough.
Another excellent video. You are so thorough with everything you do. I really enjoy watching you fix chainsaws! Thank you.
That was an impressive repair young lady! A beautiful classic saw brought back to life! It just doesn't get any better than that. Very enjoyable repair video ma'am❤❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great job fixing a really nice saw! I was going to jump through the screen if you didn't change both seals.😅
One of my favorite u-tube channels.
Excellent analysis and repair. Cheers from Australia.
Thank you for video and appreciation from Tasmania Australia. Excellent work. Most impressive systematic repair and restoration. It was lovely watching especially because I've got the smaller 026 that looks very similar. Luckily still runs okay.
ERICA good job on the 036 pro. Clean saw KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK 🎉
Thanks 👍
Even back then you could apparently install the dual bucking spikes and roller chain catcher like I have on my MS361. I noticed the screw holes on the outside of the clutch cover.
That’s a saw I would buy as is and have you fix it up 😊😊😊
It's nice stihl saw.And it's running again and owner should be happy because she knew what saw needs
Thanks to you Erica, I will not look for my own 036 PRO to rebuild and restore!!
Another fabulous video....that you!! 🥰
Thank you!!
Really great video on the 036 Pro. I love those old 0 model saws, great job Erice. Dave in Missouri
Very nice job Erica. Love your methodical approach to repairing saws. I learn something new with each of your videos, can’t wait for the next!
Thank you very much!
Great job on a great saw Erica.
Outstanding Job Erica, nice work bringing that saw back to life. Enjoy watching your videos. Have a great Sunday.
Thanks, you too!
Another great video. No 036 here but have my original 026 and 440 magnum. I need to pull them apart this winter to check lines and vac test. Thanks
Awesome job Erica 👍 these saws have a huge place in my heart. I just completely restored one for myself. Awesome saws!
@@Grayhawk1976 they are! I love them seeing them come through the front door.
I am glad you saved the saw. I saved two Jonsereds this year but only cut now and then with them, as they are such nice examples.
Excellent video as always. You really outdid yourself on this one. A bit long but I couldn’t stop watching. Have a pre Mtronic ms362 that’s a great all round saw.
Thumbs up,enjoying all these video's, have to get a piston stop like that one you use sometimes,
Very good video. Good to see cut test back in the videos, very satisfying.
Thanks for another great video Erica, always looking forward to a new one. Thanks for taking the time to make them, and no you can't make too many, they are all greatly appreciated. Enjoy your day.
Good job runs great
So glad the owner decided to let you do all that work and keep that very tidy 036 going. Plenty of folk out there would pay good money for a 36 in that condition.
Thanks 👍
Good call on replacing both crankshaft seals.
You are the Sherlock Holmes of chainsaw repair. Great detective work. The only thing missing was a cameo from one of the cats. I suppose they were napping and couldn’t be bothered. 😺
Thank you, Ron!! The cats are always nearby. Lilly stays pretty close to the shop and usually naps in a box all day. Tony wanders outside the shop a bit more. We have to keep a close eye on him after our last incident with the coyote.
I have a buddy that has an 034 Super which is similar to this and it is a great saw! I picked up a great condition 1995 square body Dolmar this year and you can feel the quality just holding it. I think older saws that have been taken care of are a great purchase. I do most of the work on my saws including performance modifying! My newest vehicle is a 2005 VW 284,000 miles.👍
Very cool!
Great job, really enjoyed, taught me lots, thank you.
That was "OUTSTANDING" THANK YOU
Thank you!! 🙏
I think I heard someone mention on Kens Small engine repair' Mr Mow IT All's 'live stream that there is over 700 small engine repair channels now but however there is only a Handful that is Really good in my book as far as Good Quality content I think your channel is in the 1% bracket. You have real good camera and you always make it where a Shy ,old dumb, uneducated idiot like myself can understand Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to make such Good Quality Get to the point videos There's a few more notable mentions Kens Small engines- Henry Murawski (Big Dog 🐕 Repair) HOBBY MOTOR--James Condom -Greasy Shop Rags---Bruces Shop ----24:52-- Eliminator Proformance-- Individualized Repair ---Micks Mowers --Tom Doby mower repair--- Taryl fixes All. --Mustie1 just to mention a few. Keep up the good , Great work Erica. You'll be at 100k subscribers before u know it mate
Thank you!! ☺️
That was one awesome magic tragic and I feel old as that saw is I graduated in 94 lol.
G’day Erica that was a very interesting I really enjoyed watching it you explained it well and your diagnosis was spot on. I’m glad that the owner wanted you to go ahead on repairs because it’s a lovely old saw, now to talking him to a new back cover that would finish the repairs it Thanks for filming it was great kind regards John
Nice fix. Thanks for teaching all of us about seal leaks. John from MI
Hi Erica from one of your many Uk subscribers. Excellent videos, your attention to detail give great educational value. Many thanks.
You could have used a heat gun to heat up the plastic to remove the dent. You are great at fixing those saws. Scott in southern Oregon
I will start with i am always impressed with your knowledge of saws. I have been working with small engines for 30 plus years, just that last few with 2 strokes and i have learned more from your videos than any other. Great job.
Very cool. I have seen that fuel line and it is like---spaghetti. "squishy" I feel that the horizontal line on the cylinder wall is where the rings sat for years. I also was surprised to see the leak. I thought clutch side for the leak too as it is the hot side. I won't say any more until after the video so viewers will watch it all. Saws get greasy from the air leak. Thanks Erica. Now to go shovel the walks agan.
You can keep that snow in Alberta. Wait it's snowing here in ontario also
I have 2 healthy happy saws since I found you
Erica is my “carb trivia” go to person!
Another awesome video, great work thank you Erica
Well done you saved it's life,it will last for years to come
Watched the whole video. You make it look so easy to work on them. Found out last Thursday my MS361 has more problems than it is worth to fix. Both crank seals are leaking, a vacuum line behind the carburetor needs replaced, the fuel tank is leaking, that’s part of the handle. Between parts and labor, he said it better to put that money into a new saw. And he checked, and all the parts are out of stock. And still haven’t got the new carburetor yet. So I went back in Friday night and purchased a new MS311 to replace it. Came with a 25” bar, but I purchased an 18” bar so I could use brand new chains I was using with the MS361. So now I have a 2 month old MS182 and a brand new MS311, so I should be good to go for a while now. I hope, lol.
I have a 361 on my bench right now !
@ I’ll be wondering if they have the same problems, lol. I can’t believe it’s done for. It was such a good saw. I cut so many years supply of firewood with it. Just a shame.
Forgot to mention I love the o series saws and that customer has a work horse of a saw now.
Well now this was an interesting video and a job well done on that 036. I bought a 036 brand new in 1994 and my saw is now 30 years old. I use it a lot all of the time and try to take very good care of it. My carburetor has never been rebuilt and I still have the original fuel line and fuel filter. Probably should change the fuel filter even though my tank is very clean and filter looks excellent. I don't know how long this saw well run but I have worked it pretty hard since 19 94. Yes, I will continue to do so until it quits me.
Thank you again for another great video.
Thank you! 🙏
Another superb video with again, excellent explanations of your procedures--thank you😀👍
Thank you!!
For those that dont have the sleeve to protect the seal lips as it’s installed use clear package tape. Cover so that you can easily remove after seal is installed. You only have to cover the threads.
Absolutly well done on that one….💪💪. Thatl be a good saw now!!🥰🥰💪💪🍺🍺
Again, it's a top-notch video. Your ability to show us clear and focused shots is amazing! I serviced a 025 with the exact same problems. I noticed the sticker on your saw said 1995. If one side is leaking, shouldn't it be sealed before determining if the other side leaks? Outstanding video!! Thanks for all you do!
Hi Erica, on your recommendation I managed to get a Depstech DS520 borescope, new on EBay at bargain price and I must say I’m absolutely delighted with it, I wanted to check the bore on my FS55C as on compression test it was a low 90psi but I was amazed at how clear and sharp the imaging was when I inserted scope through spark plug hole, the bore was clear and extremely polished showing no sign of scoring or wear, so I’ve concluded my compress tester reads low. But I am impressed with the clarity of the Depstech DS520 Borescope.😊😊😊😊
Hello Erica,
It’s great to see you getting good use out of your Honda. I am currently driving its cousin. A 2005 Pilot EXL with 262,000 miles (421648KM) on it. However living in Texas, just south of Houston. Mine doesn’t have any rust on it! Lol.
I have a Stihl 025 311Y It needs everything you just did to that saw. Maybe more? It has been sitting on a shelf for several years. Not sure if I want spend the money on it or not? I am guessing it's twenty plus years old? I enjoy all your video's. Thank you for the time and effort it takes to make them.
Excellent repair! Loved this one too! Thanks-
Great detail camerawork. Thanks for another great vid, from Aus.
👍
Wished you had a carb rebuild that removed the Welch plug and service with reinstall.
I have a 031av bought in1976 no chain brake only failures oil pump and condenser which I converted to electronic module never let me down
Excellent video once again I hope Stihl is watching to see the fine quality of work your performing on these saws. Maybe there R&D department can take some advice from you. Love the videos thanks again always nice to see an expert at work
Thank you very much!
Great fix; looks like that saw is ready for another 20 years.
And yeah, I wish I had a nickel for every time I've yanked on a starter with the kill switch set to "off."
Hi! You made a remark about ”golden” screws. I didn’t really understand what u meant.
Anyhow;
Brass screws don’t catch corrosion easily.
I worked with at a company in the late 90-es that sold screws for Ericsson mobile phones. Even brass screws were not good enough, so we sold gold plated screws for their mobile phones.
Keep up your good work!
Viveca
I don't believe those were brass. They appeared to be yellow zinc coated. Yellow zinc (zinc chromate) is a very common corrosion inhibitor - 2 - 3 times better than plain, silver-colored zinc.
Thank you for posting this excellent video. I'm really glad you are trying to help your hands. I still think using gloves that are gas resistant is a great idea. Thank you for all the work you did on this chainsaw to bring it back to life. I was concerned when you showed the inside of the cylinder and the exterior surface of the piston. You did a fantastic job of repairing this saw. You are so meticulous. I had bet on the clutch side crankcase seal being bad. I'm glad you replaced both crankcase seals, it makes a lot of sense to do that. Now the owner can enjoy the use of very powerful saw thanks to you. You know, I was kind of wondering if the tubing to your pressure/vacuum testing device needs a hose clamp at each end? I guess not since you do not clamp it? As to the tool that you showed us, I am not sure which saw it came with, of course. I remember when my stepfather came home with a brand new Homelite saw it did come with one or two tools. Mostly for getting the chain off or adjusting it, I think. It was a long time ago, a very long time ago. I want to mention that I'm interested in the work you can do on the 75 year old two-person saw. It looks gigantic.
I'm enjoying looking your video. Thank you i lurn so much!
Hi, great video, hope you didn’t let the guy get away with a freebie handle cover.
Soak plastic cover corner in boiling water to make soft then push out from back side to straighten.
Works on plastec car body panels as well.
Hi Erica, I love the video. I always look forward to the new ones. First, Thank you for being patient enough to take the time to explain so many details in such a deep diagnostic disassembly.
Just Curious, I have a equipment question.....
....When you do a Vacuum or pressure test, why is the exhaust plug so different than the intake, just seems the sealing gasket could be made like the intake, but without the nipple.
I use the Zep Industrial Purple. Its concentrated and mixes 6 to one with water. I find it cleans as well as the citrus and only costs 12.49 at Canadian Tire. The most bang for the buck.
