Hello! I am SO glad that you're here! Just a short and simple video today about a little Stihl MS 180 that needs a little bit of my help! I want to take a minute and thank everyone who responded to my last video (shop tour and I asked you all for your input), you all gave us so many ideas and so much support! Tyler and I can't say THANK YOU enough! It's been a crazy couple weeks here! Snow storms, snow days and so many saw and snowblower repairs to do! I hope you all enjoy this short one today, I have a long one on tap for this Sunday! Right now on the bench - A Stihl MS170 that has been to another shop and came back worse then it went in! And now it's in my hands, Oh Boy! See you in the next vid!
The thing I saw alot is that people pull start the C models like regular ones instead of slowly pulling and holding untill the spring spools up to start the engine...
And BTW these "C" models are for sissies... Literally, especially so small engines like this.

Yes. Even though you make it look so easy to fix, I’m still taking my saw to the shop and have them fix it. Lol. It’s amazing. I can put a 10,000 watt Alpine stereo system with 13 Alpine amplifiers, 16 speakers 6 10” subwoofers, dual alternators, which is dual charging systems in my ‘04 F-150 8200 GVW and I couldn’t do this simple fix. Yup, that is funny. Lol

Good Friday morning, I've fixed a couple of those EZ start saws, frayed rope,was the issue at the time,seeing a bad spring is rare,but for a saw that old new spring is the easy way to go,great video thumbs up

Wow, you made that look easy. I absolutely hate working on pull starts. It normally takes me hours to get one back together
Fascinating repair video. I'll keep my original start system saw. Since watching your videos, I am very comfortable with a couple of initial pulls to get the impulse line to get the fuel going, then couple more to get it to pop off. Half choke pulls and its running. I now pull the recoil off to clean area and check the system. I had a very hard time with them until i watched your videos. Thanks.

I have one of these and love it you must observe the starting procedure by the manual you do not yank the rope like another saw just pull real gentle and you will never have a problem. The most problems are operator error improper starting! I used it for a lot of heavy duty stuff and it holds up good. Would definitely buy another easy start! Do not yank on rope like a 800 pound gorilla! Dec. 12.2024 I cannot emphasize enough do not yank on rope it is an easy start

Well now this was an interesting video and more to that starting system than I thought. I can see why that individual had trouble figuring out how to get that recoil starter up and going. I now myself have a better understanding how those easy start recoil starters work.

Good job! EZ Start? It took Erica, an experienced pro, 10 pulls to get it going. Recoil springs can be a pain in butt and do wear eye protection when working with springs in general.
Great fix Erica! I noticed when you started it that there was absolutely no visible smoke on a cold start. You might want to check the fuel on that one but it’s probably too late.

Its not just the extra spring in the starter thst makes it easy to start. It is that the spring drives a weighred mass.

Great tutorial Erica. I learn something every time I watch. How do I know the correct length of the starter rope replacement on a stihl saw?
As a production manager/mechanic/commercial application for a lawn fertilization company we had around 15 Stihl bg 55 handheld blowers.When they first came out with their E-Z start system I was re-roping 2-3 a night because guys were pulling on them so hard 🦍it would "wanker" the assist spring and ropes would not return.We stopped buying that model the bg50 still had the old style recoils

Thank you for posting this excellent video. I really appreciate your showing how to replace the spring and the starting rope. Let me see if I understand what happens when the starter rope is pulled. The pulling action causes the flywheel to spin, which energizes the starter solenoid to create a pulse of electricity that is delivered to the spark plug. The flywheel also causes the crankshaft to operate the lifters, which open the intake valve and closes the exhaust valve, admitting a fuel-air mist into the cylinder. The crankshaft also sends the piston into a compression stroke just as the spark plug delivers a spark into the cylinder. Do I have that right?
I love catching your videos each day. I've learned a lot about troubleshooting and repairs. The part/tool I'm curious about is the carb blockoff tool that you use for pressure/vac testing. Do you have a part #, can it be used on multiple makes and models? Thank you and look forward to watching your next video

I have repaired multiple of these easy start with pull rope issues, with nearly every one its operator error, the operator has been yanking on the rope as though it was a normal pull starter.
Hello Ericka and thank you for the video. I have a curiosity question for you. You showed us the spring the customer came in with and then showed the replacement spring. But after placing the new spring in the recoil housing, you mentioned if your spring comes uncoiled, us that black base packaging to coil it back up. So was there a reason you didn't just coul up his old spring? Broken, bent? Or maybe not cost effective to pay you to wind up the spring again? Thank you!

3:38 Spring has Sprung!?!
I have a question. I have the same saw with the same issue. The spring popped out on me by accident but I have put it back in successfully. The customer put the rope in but I'm questioning now if the pulley & rope have enough turns to make the saw start. I wound the rope & pulley approx. 2 1/2 turns with good tension it seems but to me it seems like the engine is not spinning over enough & won't start. The littlle engagement dogs are working fine & the clip is installed properly. Any suggestions & also wondering how long the rope should be? Thank you!
Usually takes about 6-7 turns to wind using roughly 900mm of rope
Hi, was the old spring unserviceable?
The spring that he handed in on the side was bent and a bit damaged..I looked at it and decided that for the cost of a new spring..he was getting a new spring.
