@@joeblow1934 I have the original 400 with the Magnesium piston and I bought it as soon as it came out . Everyone that has one loves it and after 3 years they make it discontinued . The version 2.0 is less power and made to look like a 500i body design which has proven to be not as tough as the older chassis design . It's like it was an experiment model to see if it would sell and it just leaves a bad taste .
I like the 400. A good strong and pretty lightweight (compared to the power) saw. But I dont understand the hype. I will wait a year or two, so we really see how the saw is standing up to professional use. Its like the hype around the 500i as it was new. The fuel consumption of it is redicoulus.
Someone stated the original ms400c has a stronger thus heavier frame than the new ms400.1. And the newer lighter weight version could be prone to cracking like the ms500i. We will see?
I have a early and original 044 with the 10mm pin. Yes the vibration is higher and a little heavier but it still runs perfectly, same as my even older 22 year old red leaver 046. I like the fact that lots of parts like clutch cover etc are interchangeable on the old stihls and i can service everything myself. I also quite like the squat nature of the 04 series stihl, they feel right and balance well with both short and longer bars. I wonder if the weight saving will come at the expense of long-term durability compared to the heavy but reliable old saws. Would i buy one? No, im happy with my old saws but if i needed too then i could be persuaded. The styling looks good and the saw looks compact. Would love to come down for the day just to say hi, running any saws would be a huge bonus! James
I own a Stihl 400 Ms I and it's cut over 100 cords of wood without a hiccup... It gets cleaned n serviced properly after every cut... I run it on premium 91 with Lucas mix and a bottle of seafoam with a touch of marvel ... Closer to a 40:1 and the seafoam keeps it squeaky clean... Stihl makes the best saws hands down... Keep them cleaned, serviced and run quality mix and fuel and they'll last forever... Also don't bog the saw, keep the chains sharp as it keeps the saw in it's power band (they're 2 strokes) bogging them is hard on the clutch...
I have 3of the saws you mentioned. 362,400. & 661 plus others. I don’t run saws stock they get the treatment ported muffler mods and air filtration mods. But they run and run and run. It all started when I bought and I still have it my 032AV and it still runs strong and it’s all stock! The new Stihl’s look like their battery powered saws meaning the logo’s

Buy as many old 400s as you can afford. Keep them in the box and watch the price for them double within 2 or 3 years. Maybe not but I'd about bet the old 400 will be a collector item and highly sought after
Odds are 90% of the population won’t know or care what’s different between the two. Select people may pay extra for a version 1 400 just like some pay stupid money for a ms200t still even though the 201t cm has surpassed the 200 in power and is much smoother.
@@christopherlehman4045 it will just be another that's rare to find in good shape and one that some people will always love more than any other. Yes like the 200t or the 10mm 044.

No way paying big money for a Stihl. Purchased a FarmMac F380W (038 Magnum II clone) 25” Bar for $375. Saw runs perfect and all my big work was finished in a hurry. Beast of Saw for the money. I can buy 3 FarmMacs for the price of one comparably sized Stihl.
Why must it suck the fuel down? You realize there’s only so many btu’s in a gallon go gas and it requires a certain amount of fuel to make that hp number at a given efficiency. If the 63cc is a more efficient design it may use less making the same power.
Stihl should send one of these saws to Brisco... I betcha then this saw would perform great. Im betting these will good once the porters get their hands on them... with that said, I'll take a ported 400c until a ported 400.1 out performs.
As a little information, the chain brake serves as a safety system in the event of a kickback and is not intended to be put in and out again after every cut! The thing doesn't last long...!
@@tonydrechsel3687 it’s for the purpose of the ‘Safety Sally’s’ as in training courses you are thought to apply the chain brake every time you move. In the real world I certainly don’t use the chain brake like this 👍🏼
Just leave the saw idle down before applying the brake. Snapping the brake on whilst the saw is close to full revs is hard on the clutch springs and the brake band.
Stihl chainbrakes can last long time even on this hardcore use, all other chainsaw makes are far behind in chainbrake department IMHO. Husky-constantly brake band end gets broken off, Echos, mechanism linkages can wear down or broken and handle itself can go broken off and no such problems on Stihls at all. Old SOLO had very similar chainbrake linkage construction style. Maybe on Dolmar is similar.
It better have torque and durability. This appears to be a move to run people to the higher priced 462 because who wants to downgrade to a lesser saw. The 400.1 specifications say lesser saw than 400C and people look a the numbers. I have 400, 462 and a 261 so I’m in great shape. I’m curious to see how it goes but chances are I will not be getting a 400.1.
I’d say it’s real close with the original 400 time will tell how it holds up. Stihl is in the process of changing all the saws in the line I bet. Started at the 881 then all the small ones 162-212 came out now this new 400 all with white letters on rewind and orange on the clutch cover. They replaced one of the oldest saws in the line with this 400.1, the 362 design is old along with the ms261 which I wouldn’t be surprised if its replaced next couple years.
@christopherlehman4045 And the 163-212 don't perform as well as the saws those replaced. They are all turds. Said to have more power but they don't. Stihl has been working in reverse. I know a few people that got their hands on the new version of the 400 and they all agree that the original 400 performs much better. When Stihl takes a very popular and trusted saw that is only 3 years old and changes it that much, that tells me everything. Stihl has cheaped out once again. Cheaped out and bumped the price up. Yet they wonder why their sales have dropped more than any other brand.
No they don’t claim the small saws make more power than the old ones. 162 is heavier and less powerful and Stihl said that. 400 was a revamped 362 that’s old as heck and was going away still need to make new saws and 80% of the 3 year old 400 was 362 they decided to change and go one 60cc in the middle. I have a 400 currently that’s ported.
I mean of course people are gonna hate on it. Especially 400c owners because they see the minor decrease in cc blah blah. The bottom line is … the 362cm and the 400cm were totally clashing … I own both. I always thought to myself, if you’re gonna get the 362 might aswell get the 400 … and if you’re gonna get the 400 … might aswell just get the 462😂. Bottom line is the 400.1 is going to be light, more torque, and be a perfect middle saw. Now u got your 261, your 400.1, and your 462 (or 500i 661) for the big saw. It’s going to simplify things and I guarantee you it’s going to be a great saw. Another thing to note is likely in some time , 5-10 years, those 362 and 400 parts may be harder to find/work on/tune up giving the discontinuation. I don’t see why people wouldn’t want the new 400.1
My ms 400 has always bogged down when you put the dogs in?! Great saw when you don't though. My Husky 550xp just never complains and keeps going. It might not be quite as fast but when you add in the bogging down of tge 400 they seem almost the same. Im not a Stihl or Husky fan boy just whats best for the job. I wont buy ine as my 400 is still working though! Great video and thanks for showing it to us
Looks like it cuts about as good as a ported 550xp mk 2 , the og 400c are booty stock , they have to be ported right to make em useful hopefully this one will have some more ass behind it especially with it probably going to be as much or more than a 572 which smokes any 400 any day
My solution is: save 💰 money. Port my 400c, worksaw build, nothing crazy! Use quality oil@ 40:1, ill be good. Ive got ported 70cc saws that run with the stock 500i now.
A current 400cm with a Bark Box or Straight Shot, would kick the snot out of the 400.1 running identical 20" 72DL 3/8" .050 RS chain on ES bar burried in an oak stump.
Well if anyone else feels like I do for taking a chance on the first 400 and then they drop a perfect saw after 3 years it won't help their repeat customers . I own several of both brands but this is not acceptable to drop a successful $1000.00 saw after only 3 years .
MACHINERYNATION I have a 362c with a 25in light bar and i love it . I dont see why they have to stop production of it. Keep its construction as it is but make it replace the 311. Go back to the way it was back in the old days when all Stihl chainsaws where made to the same heavy duty specs and with thesame materials as the pro series models. Market the battery powered saws as homeowner units.
Does anyone have an idea what the torque for this saw is? The 362c is 3.5 Nm and the 400c is 4.1 Nm. That's really where the 400c wins out over the 362c. The new saw will need to match that to be a real contender. You can bury a 20 inch bar in hardwood with the 400c and it keeps going, whereas the 362c stalls out. The German trade show video showed the new saw almost stalling twice in medium timber, whereas the UK trade show saw performed better, but the operator bizarrely ran the saw at full throttle, both in the cut and out of the cut. Strange! Maybe they are still modifying it, hence the delay in getting it to market. No sign yet of any test videos from Scandanavia where Stihl usually test their saws in tough conditions.
@MachineryNation thanks, it's 4.3 Nm, according to Josh, but it is strange that a saw with less horse power and less cc's should have MORE torque than a stronger saw. Something doesn't quite add up here.
@@timhannan4551Might be more compression ratio and lighter weight crankshaft. Seems to be nice middle ground saw with a nice fast acceleration. 261 accelerates on the slow side but 462 much faster. Had an 400, vibrations is low but had a bit undertorqued compared to 462 and too little weight difference. Sold some time ago 400 and kept good ole trusty 462.
The 400 has different cases ect so you can’t just big bore a 362. Also this 400.1 should be a 363c not a 400 at all since the same saw is sold as a standard carb 363 far as I can tell that’s all that’s different. 400.1 is mtronic and 363 is carb.
I really wish the 400.1 kept the 67cc. The new one does not in fact make more overall power than the 400, it makes slightly more hp but has less torque. I’m fine with the aluminum piston I guess (I liked that it was unique though) but the extra few CC’s is what made it a class of its own with no comparable products. At 62cc’s it’s basically just a stihl 562xp with nothing remotely unique
@ I wonder if the specs have changed since first announcement. The ones I heard 2-3 weeks ago had the new one up something like .2 horsepower but down noticeably on torque. Wonder if that is changing as they get closer to launch
@nerdsunscripted624 most sites I've looked at put the new 400 at 3.9 kw and 5.5 kg weight. Where as the old 400 is 4.0kw And 5.8 kg weight. So if that's all there is in the power difference, if correct, then the new lighter saw looks real good. And like I said in my previous comment the new saw has more low end torque.( Apparently)
Why is it better more torgue yer. But less power. Sure its good. But happy with mine been up trees cut fair bit. An on the ground its been great for its wieght. But looks good.

That Ms 400.1c looks more like a mini Ms 462 , but where the black gunning mark and compression release sit it's got the look of Ms 500i . But from a little distance it looks the Ms 462 ! It seems to have good power and a nice torque . I have the Ms 500i R and I used to have the Ms 462 R C-M !
I got a 362 this year for a good price used. Its been ripping up the truckload of firewood I just got quite nicely!
Hi James Nice one Thanks again
I was unimpressed when i first got my 400c and it seemed to take a fair bit of running in. Eventually with plenty of m tronic resets it started to come alive and got better and better. Its ended up as a project having full west coast mods and i changed it to 3/8lp on a 9 pin rim. Pulls a 25" chain rather impressively now.
I think it's a must have! ;D
I like that killer dog
what kind of wood is that on loader?
Sitka Spruce.
Stihl has made one of the best firewood saws ever made and stopped after 3 years ? Way to slap a customer .
Felt that way when they discontinued the 461
I fail to see the problem, unless you have to have the newest model.
@@joeblow1934 I have the original 400 with the Magnesium piston and I bought it as soon as it came out . Everyone that has one loves it and after 3 years they make it discontinued . Doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy about getting parts for mine in a few years . The version 2.0 is less power and made to look like a 500i body design which has proven to be not as tough as the older chassis design . It's like it was an experiment model to see if it would sell and it just leaves a bad taste .
When are you releasing the side by side?
Thanks For This Video 😊😀👍🏼
Most welcome 😊
Like butter 🙂👍👍👍
Thank you 👍
I like the 400.
Sounds good
Doesn’t it 👍🏼
I have a early and original 044 with the 10mm pin.
I have a husquvarna 572 that i rarely use and find it a really bulky saw almost the same size as a husquvarna 390xp but without the power.
I'm buying three of them when they land at the dealer
Is that a good technique to keep on rapidly revving the saw like that?
I am a chainsaw noob by the way... Just asking.
No it isn't, it's totally unnecessary and annoying. He should keep the bar below shoulder height as well.
@@Toyotaamazon80seriesIt did sound a bit strange... Wasn't just me then!
Take care out there in the woods 👍
@@Toyotaamazon80seriesJust thought I'd say something that has been very useful for my sharpening "Magnetic File Angle Plate"... The aforementioned has my MS-261 ripping. I know the angle is already on the chain, but somehow this thing really helped in sharpening. Anyone reading this... Give it a go.
Great demonstration, you are a dandy saw operator, what length B&C are you working ?
Thanks for watching! We are running a 20” bar and chain. In one of our next videos we will put the old saw up against the new one and see if there are any performance differences 👍🏼
Szia milyen olajat keversz a benzinbe
Great video James 👍
Hard to believe it's a 62cc saw really isn't it, and it looks super light and manoeuvrable. Can't wait to see the Vs 400vs 362 video. It does seem that Stihl have really unlocked the magic trick of less weight and more power.
So soon this could be Stihls smallest petrol saw? The biggest electric is a 300..
I'm also wondering now if they've found something with engine design and we could see a 500.1 with an alloy piston.
Thanks for your comments on my fireside chat about this saw. Would love to come down for the day just to say hi, running any saws would be a huge bonus!
James
The 500i has an alloy piston the 400 was the first and only saw with a mag alloy piston.
The dog needs earmuffs as well😂
When does MS 400.1 get released to the market? Their website currently doesn't promote this model?
I have a 261 because I couldn’t get a 362 during one hurricane. I wanted a bigger saw. Was gonna go with a 462 but then I just said screw it and got a 500i. Ported by Ripsaw because my friend has a stock 500i.
The Dog in the Background is funny, what Race is that?
He’s a Jack Russell doing what Jack Russell’s do best… Digging 😂😂
I know things move on but I have the 362 and that is a great saw shame stihl are dropping that model
Ikr,its been a reliable workhorse. I have the original ms400c and I love it,but it was only bought because the opportunity to buy a barely used new one for half price popped up. I'd of been equally happy with a 362
Love from lndonesia 😍😍
Currently own both a 400 & 500 and love them both. Wondering if the old 400 will develop a cult following. Should we start buying up the old 400's as investments?
You might be correct. I do know that I have a mint condition 044, and every time I bring that saw out at a logging expo, dealers and professional cutters are trying to buy it from me.
Hello could you put some longer bars on the saws for the next tests stihl light weight bars 25 " or 28" they'll cut way better and won't bind up in the cut be a better test for the saws because most people who are going to buy the saw are going to put a long bar on it ❤
Aint nothing wrong with that saw, that thing is gonna do just fine.
Seems a lot better than the 400 to me and doesn’t bog down like the predecessor. Yes. I think I’ll get one of those to join my collection of elite saws displayed in my Gentlemen’s shed!
😂 gentleman's shed,lol.
Current 400 is worlds better than this new version. Stihl dropped the ball again.
Hey, maybe ive missed it. But can you share infos on when its gonna be released?
It depends where you are located. Early Spring 2025 at a guess.
@@MachineryNation i am located in germany, so thats why i am asking. this will be my first self bought chainsaw, after the ones i had used in the company
Hey, I have to know, did the Terrier get the rat he was digging for ?
@@ChrisH316 he is always digging, in most videos he’s in the back ground digging for hopeful victory
Ii wonder how long that piston will last
It seems the ms 400.1 cuts really good in smaller stuff but in bigger stuff when you push it bogs down I bet the saw has a 8 pin sprocket change to 7 pin sprocket. Maybe it will cut stronger.
Stihl would never send a 63cc saw out wirh an 8 pin. Guarantee that saw has a 7pin rim.
Chainsaw stihl 👍👍 potong pohon
Does the new 400.1 have a plastic handle like the 400, or a metal handle like the rest of Stihl's pro saws?
I'll stick with my 038 magnum. One of the best saws Stihl ever made
No way paying big money for a Stihl. Purchased a FarmMac F380W (038 Magnum II clone) 25” Bar for $375. Saw runs perfect and all my big work was finished in a hurry. Beast of Saw for the money. I can buy 3 FarmMacs for the price of one comparably sized Stihl.
i have the 67cc 400 the 62cc must really suck the fuel down??? I'd go with the 67cc if I had to guess which one I'd like the best
Yeah,I've got the original ms400c and wont be changing. It's a fantastic saw
Why must it suck the fuel down? You realize there’s only so many btu’s in a gallon go gas and it requires a certain amount of fuel to make that hp number at a given efficiency. If the 63cc is a more efficient design it may use less making the same power.
How about power to weight?!
If its priced like a husqvarna 562xp m2 then the choice is pretty easy.
Hi James looks impressive.how do you think it would compete with the husqvarna 562 👍😎
It's injection...? not carburetor...?
Mtronic so solenoid controlled carb
Carb 👍🏼
Bellissima la mia arriva domani
Better than the 362 but not nearly as good as the older 400.
I don’t see why people wouldn’t want the new 400.1
Hi, I;m a big fan of STIHL and want to buy a new saw for my chainsaw mill, what would you recomend?
Farmertech 660
For milling go strait to a MS881 👍🏼
My ms 400 has always bogged down when you put the dogs in?! Great saw when you don't though. My Husky 550xp just never complains and keeps going. It might not be quite as fast but when you add in the bogging down of tge 400 they seem almost the same. Im not a Stihl or Husky fan boy just whats best for the job. I wont buy ine as my 400 is still working though! Great video and thanks for showing it to us
Looks like it cuts about as good as a ported 550xp mk 2 , the og 400c are booty stock , they have to be ported right to make em useful hopefully this one will have some more ass behind it especially with it probably going to be as much or more than a 572 which smokes any 400 any day
Still the plastichandle? No heat in handle? This was disappointing. I go for Husky 562 and 572xpg.
Why are you triggering the saw so much between cuts .
Force of habit, keeps the revs up between the cuts without keeping it full chat. Time is money 😂
Great job Stihl... introducing the world's heaviest "limbing saw"!
The lightest 60ccm
@@Hallo99-b8tand not a weakest one.
Ship it to me whenever you’re done buddy. Make my new climbing saw
700i 95cc
just feel with a saw that size may as well go a bit bigger 50 cc area a bit more power in reserve with no bogging down
The biggest difference between the old and the new one ist that the new one can get heated grips.
Toasty 👍🏼
My solution is: save 💰 money. Port my 400c, worksaw build, nothing crazy! Use quality oil@ 40:1, ill be good. Ive got ported 70cc saws that run with the stock 500i now.
I’ve ran them both 460 and 500i the 500i has nothing on the 460
A current 400cm with a Bark Box or Straight Shot, would kick the snot out of the 400.1 running identical 20" 72DL 3/8" .050 RS chain on ES bar burried in an oak stump.
Is this what happens when Stihl's accountants and marketing department start designing saws!?
Making a new version of MS 400 is just business, nothing more. New stuff always sells.
Well if anyone else feels like I do for taking a chance on the first 400 and then they drop a perfect saw after 3 years it won't help their repeat customers . I own several of both brands but this is not acceptable to drop a successful $1000.00 saw after only 3 years .
Come on then what the verdict on the husqvarna 555 18"
The full specs are on our other video linked at the end of this one 👍🏼
@MachineryNation thanks, it's 4.3 Nm, according to Josh, but it is strange that a saw with less horse power and less cc's should have MORE torque than a stronger saw. Something doesn't quite add up here.
@@timhannan4551Might be more compression ratio and lighter weight crankshaft. Seems to be nice middle ground saw with a nice fast acceleration. 261 accelerates on the slow side but 462 much faster. Had an 400, vibrations is low but had a bit undertorqued compared to 462 and too little weight difference. Sold some time ago 400 and kept good ole trusty 462.
non capisco se l acceleratore è molto più sensibile o è l operatore
Pure talent 😉 but it does have good acceleration 👍🏼
The 400 has different cases ect so you can’t just big bore a 362. Also this 400.1 should be a 363c not a 400 at all since the same saw is sold as a standard carb 363 far as I can tell that’s all that’s different. 400.1 is mtronic and 363 is carb.
Just get a 500i. Job done ☑️
It's a good thing terriors have selective hearing for this application i spose! 😂
My understanding is that the new 400 makes .1 of a kw less than the old one, but produces more torque and is lighter.
Where as the old 400 is 4.0kw
And 5.8 kg weight.
So if that's all there is in the power difference, if correct, then the new lighter saw looks real good.
And like I said in my previous comment the new saw has more low end torque.( Apparently)
The 400.1 is an emissions saw. Plain and simple
@brettbrettson69 but it's lighter though, that's a plus 😉
better to have carberated easier to service
Why is it better more torgue yer. But less power. Sure its good. But happy with mine been up trees cut fair bit. An on the ground its been great for its wieght. But looks good.
I see bots with phony accounts posting positive comments about this. Fakers! Has Stihl really stooped so low?
462 just kills everything else under 90cc!
Magnesium apparently. But mines good. Just sharp does most stuff. Thanks
It would help if u actually cut big wood not limbs
