After my mom passed last month, my sister got it into her head to tear down all of ma's wall paper. It so happens that most of that wallpaper is very thin and old - you can see through it when you peel it off. After watching her absolutely destroy one of, now, "our" walls with a 6 inch knife and a clothes iron, I went around youtube for help to mend my frustration. Surely, wall paper removal wasn't *that* destructive? You have made me look like a wall paper removal prodigy. Who would have thought spraying hot water on a wall and waiting a bit would make the paper, and then the backing, come off so easy? Very thankful you've shared your craft.
the best advice on the web for removing wallpaper followed your advice and worked like a charm and yes it does seem to take longer by soaking the wall paper but way less clean up and doing repairs with plastering etc. Thanks and god bless from down under. Your accent and voice sounds so similar to Christopher walken with less slang.
Finally someone that knows how to remove wallpaper. I've seen people use everything under the sun and every tool under the sun. Warm water is all you need. Great job
I know people who have replaced sheet rock as getting old wallpaper off is so hard and time intensive. I know the decades old paper I have removed in my house is washable and very hard to remove. Some rooms we just painted the wallpaper. Others we did get it off but I had to do a lot of wallboard patching as it removed the upper parts of the wallboard . One half wall took us about 4 days of work, and it was only 3 by 8 feet in size.
Whilst this works a treat on newer paper and has helped me clear single-layers in some rooms, I still have sections in my hallway where I feel like I could arrange a tsunami to hit my walls and it still won't loosen. It's where previous owners had put wallpaper on top of wallpaper, on top of wallpaper. The 1st 2 layers are gone, but large parts of the 3rd layer (which I'm guessing must be like 40+ years old!) are absolutely welded on and even after multiple sprays with water it is still impossible to get anything underneath them to start stripping it... the search goes on for something that may be able to shift those sections and clear the walls completely :(
That wallpaper is NOT stubborn, it comes off in a big piece. The wallpaper I removed, I had to use a razor scraper, and it only came off where I scraped it, and it would not peel off. I wet it, scored it, everything. It was 50 years old, damaged by skylights and leaks. THAT was stubborn wallpaper.
clearly you did not listen mate, he said you must soak it and keep soaking it till it comes off easy then do the whole wall plus its less damage to fix after as there is no damage just let dry and undercoat.
Hi Spencer, I've successfully removed all the wallpaper in my house, thanks to your tips. There is just one weird wall tho..... Upon removing the wallpaper there is a strange 3D patterned wall ... And when I try to remove that textured pattern I'm pretty sure it's dry wall.... So weird, it's a 60s house. My game plan is just sanding, sealing, quickly sanding and skim coating it. What do you think?
Put 2 layers of KILz original on it. Let 1 hour pass between coats. Scuff it up after it dries with 60 grit sand paper on a pole. Add 90 minute mud into a bucket and mix with water. Don’t put too much water. When it’s soft, add a bowling ball size of regular topping compound with it. Mix it up. Make it creamy. Get a paint roller on a pole. Dip into your mixture. Roll into walls. Skim it off with an 8” taping knife. Seal this finish with gardz when you’ve sanded it. Paint it. Done.
@@spencercolgan So if I'm understanding it correctly, after the skim coat dries, I sand it with the 60 grit again, and then I seal it? Also as per your suggestion I got me some weldbond, the 1:2 solutions of that and water would work fine in this case?
@@spencercolgan okay, following your procedure. As for my regular walls I am just doing what I learned from your videos: 1) Remove wallpaper with warm water 2) Pole sander after 24 hour drying period - with respirator -Scrape off the loose pieces first (once it stops peeing the work is done) 3) Seal it - Let it dry over night (Only BIN lets u only dry for 15 mins) 4) Pole sand it quickly again 5) Skim coat the wall (less is better) - fan should be going - 12 inch knife. 45 angle. Then skim coat (2 thin coats) (6 hr minimum to dry) Then seal it again, Then paint

Hey Spence.. have a question. I need to redo a 6'x8' section of wallpaper that was printed the wrong shade of color from the rest of the printed panels I installed. I used Roman 880 strippable paste so when I removed the section that needed to be redone, it came of rather easy but left an even smooth coat of paste on the wall. My question is, do I need to remove that paste on the wall before installing the new panels or can I put the new panels right on top of that old paste? Thanks in advance!
It’s an excellent question. And here is your answer: number one, if the new panels or if the new panel will manifest the bumpy glue residue left on the wall, you should remove the glue. Number two : If going over the old glue doesn’t give you bumpiness in the new panel, you can go right over it because the water in the new glue will activate the old glue and make a nice bond. I just suggest that you scrape off any roughness on the old glue before you do it.
@@spencercolgan Thanks so much for the quick response! Yes it's smoother than a baby's bottom. I was hoping that was going to be your answer because I was afraid I was going to have to remove it. Your're the man!!

Let’s do a test: put joint compound on it as if you’re SkimcoatIng over it. If it takes. LEAVE THE PAPER ON but make Flat by skimcoating.

I applied steam and scraped the wallpaper off (a bit at a time).
Excellent Professional Tutorial. Thanks. Eager to begin my wallpaper project.👍🌈☀️
That’s all well and good but it doesn’t work with multiple layers.
or paper that has been painted over with vinyl paint....lol
A tiny amount of mild detergent (eg. low-scent dishwashing liquid) in the water helps greatly with the wetting and ability for it to soak in deeply
Salt and pepper - 😂🤣😂 Thanks for adding levity to my day! Now to the hardware store for the magical $2 tool…

And he sounds like Christopher Walken!!
Jaja you are right about Christopher Walken !
I bet you could do a great Christopher Walken impression, with little work.
I'm in a house made in 60s so the wallpaper is about as stubborn as it gets
So helpful! Thanks!!
That's not stubborn! The wall I am currently doing is stubborn. It feels like the paper was stuck on with superglue.
Use a palm sander. 60 grit. Then skim. Seal. And paint or hang new.
Thanks Christopher Walken
Amazing..
I just get someone else to do it.
Come to England! Not a fu**ing chance!
