- Dr Prashant Arya, Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement Surgery Consultant at Narayana Hospital -Brahmananda, Jamshedpur. He discusses a common sports injury we often see in our patients - ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injuries.
The ACL is a crucial ligament inside the knee, primarily affecting athletes in sports like football, cricket, or running. This injury typically occurs when the knee is twisted or bent suddenly, leading to a tear in the ligament. Following the injury, the knee experiences pain and swelling. Although the pain may subside after a few days, the knee often lacks stability, becomes stiff, and may trouble the patient during activities like running or climbing stairs.
For individuals who are active and wish to return to sports, surgery is generally recommended to restore knee stability. This surgical procedure involves reconstructing the ACL using tissue from the patient's muscles, restoring the knee's anatomy and function. After recovery, the knee regains strength, allowing patients to resume their sports activities and active lifestyles.
On the other hand, if someone leads a sedentary lifestyle and is not actively involved in sports, surgery might not be necessary, even if they sustain an ACL injury. Other non-surgical treatments can effectively manage symptoms and improve knee stability for these patients.
