  • Patient Abraham Immam experienced difficulty breathing. His parents decided to consult
Dr Sanjay Rao, HOD and Senior Consultant, Paediatric Surgeon at Narayana Health City, Bommasandra, Bengaluru, for his treatment.
A lot of children are observed with airway anomalies and difficulty breathing. Children develop this condition due to previous interventions, such as being admitted to the ICU after injury, dengue fever, or other reasons, and being on ventilators for a long time, leading to the development of narrowing in their airways, called subglottic stenosis. These children face difficulty breathing due to the blockage of airways. For this, we perform an endoscopy to confirm the diagnosis. If the stenosis or the obstruction is mild, we use balloon dilation to help patients overcome the obstruction. Sometimes, it’s impossible if the obstruction is very tight or narrow. Then surgery becomes an option to expand the airway opening and overcome the obstruction.
Most children with obstruction can be assured of full recovery of their breathing, voice, and swallowing and a promise of a full and normal future. Patient Abraham had airway reconstruction in our unit and made a remarkable recovery, having a normal voice and life. The children respond very well to our structured management program. These children can be assured of excellent outcomes in the future.
With dedicated care and advanced treatments like those received by Abraham, we continue to help children breathe easier and live a healthier future.
