This is a war dance called "Serra" or "Pyrichios". It's a traditional dance of the Greeks of Pontus and gives me goosebumps every time I see it. This is probably one of the best performances you will find online...
It is an Ancient Greek dance the Dorian Greek hoplites were dancing after the battle with spears and shields in their hands. The men of Pontus are keeping this ancient tradition alive today.
Riverdance was invented by the Greeks?
Pyrrichios - Πυρρίχιος (from πυρ = fire + ρίχιος = climb).Mythological origin , after the victory of the gods in the Gigantomachia, the Goddess Athena danced the Pyrrichios, a dance that simulates the movement of fire, the climbing of the flame.

The way that Athens 2004 did the flame extinguishing process was a masterpiece .
It was like they were sharing the flame with everyone and in a way a form of their ritual with the games with everyone .
It was really in my view the most beautiful part of the whole ceremony for me .
This is to the Opening and Closing Ceremony of these games .
To see the things only found in words in a history book or something about the Olympics or Greece itself coming to living color like that moved me like the whole time .

en la ceremonia de inauguración se trató de mostrar la cultura griega y su gran aporte a la humanidad desde lo más primitivo de la misma hasta el imperio otomano; por otro lado la ceremonia de clausura nos muestra la cultura griega contemporánea a través de la música y tradiciones; de eso se tratan las ceremonias olímpicas de mostrar lo mejor de los países anfitriones y que mejor oportunidad que te lo muestre el país donde surgen los juegos olímpicos. no crees?

Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance to spectate the 2004 Olympic Games since I was born that year but this gives me goose bumps and stirs many emotions. I hope one day the Olympics will re-return to their home.

Ο Πυρρίχιος είναι αρχαίος Ελληνικός χορός που σώθηκε από τους Έλληνες του Πόντου. Δεν είναι Ποντιακός όπως λένε κάποιοι. Νομίζω πως κάθε Έλληνας συγκινείται όταν βλέπει να τον χορεύουν, διότι στο σώμα μας κυλάει αίμα Αρχαίων Ελλήνων.
Who is him?
Pontos is the coastal region of Turkey in the Black Sea and was the home of hundreds of thousands of Greeks for thousands of years until the Greek Genocide in 1919-1922. The dance in that part is an ancient Greek war dance, which has been saved until today by the Pontic Greeks.

This ceremony portrays the kind of passion and love for life that Olympic spectacles have been progressively losing and replacing by dull screen projections and high-tech gimmicks. So vibrant, envigorating and joyful, and a majestic approach of greek folk and pop culture for all of us foreigners as well. One of my absolute favorites :)

En este caso en particular, y al igual que el video de la Apertura de Atenas 2004, la transmisión no es la oficial, ya que es la de NBC para Estados Unidos. Se nota una tremenda descoordinación del director, ausencia de tomas áreas, y planos demasiado generales. Seguramente se usan estas imágenes porque las oficiales no fueron generadas en HD ni en formato 16:9. Pese a ello, sigo prefiriendo las originales, ya que éstas si estaban en línea con lo que transcurría.
Ahora entiendo que se ve diferente desde otros ángulos, recuerdo que acá en México la transmitieron por TV Azteca y eran otras tomas!
I've seen the 4:3 version of this ceremony and is much better than this hd 16:9 version. The details of the action, the choreograpy, the scenes, are shown in a better way. I guess the 16:9 cameras were hard to manage and the ceremony was conceived for the 4:3 cameras. I would be great if you could upload that version in hd too
This is the NBC production. Back in 2004 europe didnt have the HD.
So the 4:3 production is the official one from Athens 2004 and the HD is the one directed by NBC

@@joancarlestomas there are various issues with copyrights. The dvd, that was released with the ceremonies in Greece, doesnt have the entire second music part of the Closing. It stops when the Flame is gone.

The Romans copied a lot from the Greek (for example the Roman Goddess Venus is equivalent to the Greek Goddess Aphrodite) and further spread its culture throughout Europe in the Roman Empire. Pero si eso era lo unico que podian hacer , esto fue aburrido Boring , esta ceremonia hasta sueño dio. Y los atletas se retiraron antes de que esos artistas terminaran de cantar todo en griego sin bailarines que aburrida ceremonia.
