Available Now: mercury-studio...
Supertramp's "Breakfast In America" was the biggest selling album in the world in 1979.
It spawned several hit singles and went on to win two Grammy Awards and sell in excess of 20 million copies. On the album's release Supertramp embarked on a 10 month world tour which arrived in Paris at the end of November.
These 4 shows from the Pavillon de Paris were all recorded and the last two were filmed. The audio went on to form the basis of the 1980 live album "Paris" but the film was never released. As bonus features, we include five tracks recorded on the night (but for which there is no film) using montage visuals: "Ain't Nobody But Me", "You Started Laughing (When I Held You In My Arms)", "A Soapbox Opera", "From Now On" and "Downstream".

The talent level of this group is absolutely amazing
Amen!
Especially since the saxophone player was not only the only one to show up for an audition, they ( Roger and Rick) were too hung over to listen and they hired him and went back to sleep.
Yes truly outstanding caliber of artistry and prodigy, another level of accomplishment and brilliance with skillfulness and grace!!!!! Their music has been part of our lives (for those lucky of us who were young teens in the 70s) through joy, fear, sadness, first kiss, first time in love, gave us hope, inspiration, creativity, were our faithful best friend and comforter at all time....As a band, Supertramp is invincible, as solo goes, no comments or no comparison!!! Thank you beautiful bunch !
And the massage is even better!
You’re bloody well right
Forgotten just how utterly amazing Supertramp were. Outstanding musicianship. Remember being stuck for hours on Daisy Island, North Berwick after being caught out by tides. Me and my mate Martin Hughes sang every line for Crime Of The Century to pass the time! Those lyrics are still in my head 40+ years later. So much meaning behind every song on that album. A true classic. Thanks for the music. Supertramp were unique and underrated by some - that's the true Crime Of The 20th Century!!
Wonderful comment.
What a story to tell! I would love to do this with a mate of mine, although I'm the only Supertramp fan I know lol.
I tried to remind people in 2011 but EverGreen music [sic] and collaboraters youtube gave me multiple supertramp strikes and nuked my account. To this day the account is 'unfindable', even though I had 200 great videos uploaded. So yeah.
@@Netlife-001 I remember those days. Supertramp videos would never stay up long on RUclips if you could find them at all. Same thing with Bob Dylan.
@@SuperStrik9 Van Morrisson another one., and got a strike from him as well ... Uploaded, "Cleaning Windows" in 2009
Some of the most talented musicians to ever walk the earth. And, I've got a bloody right to say that.
That's bloody well, right brother. 🤝
I’ve been listening to this for 50 years. Enough said!

Hopefully while the iconic lineup is still alive Supertramp will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame so they can reunite and perform at the show and get their due!
Agreed.
Ufyi6 under ur
Fuck the r n r hall o shame n liberal bull shiffers
@ShariSez1 Hodgson would be the one who'd refuse to show. The rest all hung in as Supertramp and would. Hodgson has been invited to reunite, but refuses. Love everything he does, but he's disowned Supertramp altogether. So much for the fans. Money and pride come first.
@@christopherbegley7783 Agreed! But still......... Supertramp not in there is absurd.
That intro is just insane. Gives me chills almost everytime.
It is Ionic. Up there with Hotel California guitar solo
Be another Crime of the Century if Supertramp is denied its rightful place in the R&R hall of fame in 2023
😁♫♪ You're bloddy well RIGHT! ♫♪ 😁 ☮
The R&R hall is a Fool's Overture as they could take enough of those bands to School.
When melody makers were true musicians and those lucky enough to have been raised in this era know they're lucky.
You got it. I'm lucky. This is eternal music.
Amazing
You're bloody well right!
When did we get old ? Lol
Well put. I was lucky to hear this growing up...back when rock music was still alive!
To sound that clean live is the mark of true musicians.
Yep...ain't a whole lot...Eagles, AC/DC/Blue Oyster Cult, Metallica, BTO, Triumph, George Thorogood and Nazareth are some that pull it of that I have witnessed. The Stones, Aerosmith, The Nuge and my heroes The Who were shitty when I saw them - although The Who can do it I'm sure. Aerosmith was too strung out on smack, don't know what da fuk Ted's reason was...
@@fredknittney3273 In the case of the Who, I believe that's deliberate, at least through the 60s and 70s. They sounded almost like two different bands in that era, depending on whether they were in the studio or on the stage, one, slick and produced, the other, just raw protopunk. by the 90s they showed that they could do their stuff live more like they did it on the studio recordings.
Just an observation. But this is the first time watching the live video of the album which I fell in love with years ago. I must say both Rick's and Roger's voices definitely needed to be re-recorded in the studio before the release. Great musicians yes, but great singers they aren't. - Still love their songwriting and craftsmanship. Just too bad about them still fighting over the release rights to this day
BTW it's 2022 guys! Let it go
Yes. I'm looking for a live version of Lover Boy.
@@fredknittney3273 are u comparing "aerosmith" with Supertramp ????? You must be american, that's the answer
Supertramp live in Paris is one of the best live albums ever produced.
Deep purple live in Paris rocked
you're bloody right
A great blu ray of it available too !
More talent on their baby finger than 99 percent of so called artists today each member multi instrumental and can also bloody well sing
You're bloody well right!
You're not bloody well wrong there!! 🙂🙂👍👍
Most cuz they be Musicians.
Memories of my early twentys when I was still single! Great times and music! Drove truck for 40 years and had at first a best of Supertramp on cassette and then a CD ,to me great driving tunes!
Just magical, brilliant song with a blistering intro that freezes your neck hairs! For me their best song, one of very many, wonderful band at their absolute peak in this performance.
1979 was the year of Supertramp.
Year for 1979 graduate.
Breakfast In America
A huge thanks, admiration, and respect to every member of Supertramp for creating some damn fine music. So grateful to have grown up in the 60’s and 70’s with the best music ever.
Roger Hodgson's guitar playing is really overlooked.
His solo on "Goodbye Stranger" is right up there with Gilmour's at the end of "Comfortably Numb." Just perfect.
Fast and bulbous! 😁👌
When this album was out we didn’t have much video available. Watching this today I see it was Roger playing guitar. I thought he only played keyboards. What a musician!
Listen to his wah pedal guitar on Paris 79 another mans woman ( imo the best ever live version of that tune) and Rudy also from the same gig, that should tell you how good a guitarist he is, he’s a multi instrumentalist who actually played bass in the early supertramp days as well, if you like their first two albums you’ll hear quite a bit of Roger playing bass on those.
Flip shroomz tight also.
Supertramp to Hall Of Fame!!!Vote
Why? The Rock HOF is crap, they’ve let rap groups in for Gods sake.
I swear to god, if Supertramp isn’t inducted before anyone in the 1974-1983 lineup dies, I’m calling this world quits...
This is the band I wish I could of seen, live. The Breakfast in America Tour.
BARF... hall of fame is a fucking joke.
@@acerothstein4755 Agree
The much unjustly underappreciated Wurlitzer Electric Piano. Great intro to a great song.
@Rick Delair The Wurli sound is unmistakable ... electric pianos in general have an awesome sound. I will say I am a bit partial to a Rhodes, myself but I certainly wouldn't mind a good 200A!
This pianaplaying is out of this world.
Underrated?
@@annaritaranalli1791 No , I mean under appreciated actually. I normally reserve the term 'underrated' fro people and /or their works , such as music, albums, playing ability, etc...I feel the Wurlitzer never got as much love as the Fender Rhodes electric piano did (and still does). but IMHO they're arguably equally great, similar in some respects but also distinctive and as such, each should(or could) best be used in specific environments, to achieve specific results, i.a 'taken as directed', so to speak. but the Rhodes has become far and away the more widely known and sought after electric piano.
Let's talk about how great a funky rhythm guitar player Roger Hodgson is. And about the absolutely great, juicy tone from his Strat. He is a frequently underrated guitar player, but not
only he is a wonderful acoustic player, but a great electric guitarist. Good fills, great riffs, excelent soloing when required (Goodbye Stranger comes to mind, and the extraordinary ending of Don't leave me now...)
All of them wonderful musicians. Rick Davies is killing it in the intro. And the whole band is tight as can be.
Paris was definitely a highlight in their careers.
Completely agree!! I can't get tired of listening to them...
Amen brother
It's one of the best concerts ever. Five musicians leaving their souls on the stage.
@@carlosyanezlozada8809 I saw then twice..not in Paris but St.Louis.

Respect
Happy Birthday

You have got great taste, kiddo!!
You could have chosen worse ;). But you might want to check out some of the other interesting bands of that era, like some of my own favourites then and now: Caravan. Gong. Fanny. Late Small Faces (Ogdens Nut Gone Flakes).
some of the best music of those days
Not a chance!
I agree but I also disagree because those days are still around today.
There are many reasons why the best music isn't happening today.
This music 's very well forme because whit hell me remember easy every life to me and my friends and my family.Thank's allot.
Best song of their best album!
I remember a McCartney interview sometime in the 70's. Asked what music he listened to, he replied, "Supertramp". He knew good music.
YES SIR..!! From LIMA PERÚ
Holy smokes. I remember that very interview, and thought same. Cheers
Sie Paul Mc Cartney really know what good Music is all about when someone it knows then he !!! The Godfather of real good Music!!!
second duo songwriters behind Lennon/McCartney are... Davies/Hodgson
Anybody have the link for that interview?
what a fuckin band man, you know they're in another league when the live version sounds better than the record
Grew up the 1970s listening to Yes, ELP, Genesis, Camel, Vangelis and Sipertramp. Those were the days.
My dad played this album once when I was 4 years old in 1979. The album started as I was drifting off to sleep. I stayed awake for the whole album, it has been on high rotation ever since. Now I can see what these cats looked like
Nice! I was 6! I got my 23 year old nephew to listen to these guys! I get texts from him asking: "who are these guys uncle Dave?" After he goes exploring music from that era!🤓

Supertight.... real musicians right in the pocket.
It's the late 70s, and Supertramp comes on the radio as you are crusing around after school.
✌️😉
It is a shame that a super group hasn’t been included in the ridiculous rock and roll hall of fame . SuperTramp is riding the rails into the logical heart of true fans .
Dang those 70s bands were freaking incredible!
Every generation thinks the music they grew up with is the best ever made. For those of us blessed to grow up in the 70s, it happens to be true. Thanks for the music, Supertramp!
Grew up in the 2000s... And Supertramp is still some of the best music ever made!
Born 89 and couldn't agree more except add the 60's as well.
I grew up in the 1980s and yes, the 1970s were the best.
Not true - my mother grew up in the 1930’s and d her favorites were the Allman Brothers and Creedence…
J'ai eu la chance de voir Supertramp à Bercy en 2011 c'était fantastique ....
OUTSTANDING ❤❤❤
I forgot how fucking good Supertramp was...they are amazing!!
that's because when i treid to show you in 2011 how good they were, RUclips in collaboration with 'Evergreen music' gave me multiple copyright strikes and nuked my account.
Absolutely bloody well right to say these guys are masters of music !

Rich people would pay good money to hear that piano solo. Ha, I'm only a guy who thinks that Supertramp is just fabulous.
you lost a lot of people at fabulous...
@@CraiglistErd LOL, yeah, probably. I will refrain from saying that they have gorgeous singing voices then. lol
That was as clean and tight as it can get.
Not gonna lie, I was mind blown when the lights came up and saw Roger Hodgeson slaying the electric guitar. Fricken awesome!
Just a fantastic group of talent these guys, it has to be one in a billion? And they have given me so much joy and happines over the years, thank you Supertramp!!
Cruella reminded me of this excellent song and band.
I knew Roger wasn't singing this one but I never knew he was playing guitar on it! Amazing!
@Rob Cosentino Yes, he’s a good guitarist... I can hear a bit of Gilmour influence.
@@caryheuchert Hodgson's solo on "Waiting So Long" is straight-up Gilmour. Of course, after he left the band, the band actually got Gilmour in to play on "Brother Where You Bound" - and then had to hire somebody to do that live. They found a genius in Carl Verheyen...
@@progmeup Carl Verheyen is amazing!
These guys are so damn good. I am not going to say that I burn a candle for them - freely admit that I spend too much time being a Prog Snob with Yes and Genesis - but for one thing Supertramp pretty much never set a foot wrong. For another, when they are in the pocket they are an immensely powerful unit. And yeah, the music is catchy and attractive to a lot of people. To echo the comments of some other folks who have posted on this video: I hope that they realize how special it is to have a whole band and to get past the personal stuff and simply give the fans what they want “Supertramp”.
Just one of the most wicked guitar riffs in rock.
Yes!!! And Roger is still a talented guitarist!!
The sound and pushing that music tech to the limits, the keys solo at the beginning, awesome
Two amazing musicians in this band. Davies and Hodgson are both exquisite
They were and are all talented
Supertramp One of my favorite groups since 70's till today 2019 !
👍. DAMN! They sounded great.
I bought the Paris double album when I was 14 years old and paid about $13 for it. My parents just shook their heads that someone would spend a small fortune for a record. I wore that thing out though. Hearing this exact version really takes me back.
Same here... and I bought it again in the CD format later.
I bought that Paris double album a couple of years ago on a flea market for 1€. Good quality and still loving it.

I saw this concert in May 1 of 79 at the Lloyd Nobel center in Norman OK. Great fun concert
Hi Mike! It was the one band I missed meeting and seeing in person. I was in the music business a long time and met epic musicians. I’m so happy you got to see them as that’s why I’m hear blasting this tune waiting for the cops to knock for a noise complaint 😂

One of the best piano intros for a rock song
One of the best 'forgotten' bands of the late 70's early 80's
THEY are NOT forgotten!!
@@theofaulk752 Indeed not!!?
who forgot them?
I can't remember the last time I heard them on the radio.
I think they were huge and a lot of the music that seemed brainy and clever from that era were largely ignored from the 80s onward.
My younger brother introduced me to the music of Supertramp ,I've been listening to their music since, thanks Richard for giving me the sound of this band, they belong in the Rock and Roll hall of fame
supertramp is so underrated
Not by even one person who lived through the 70s.
They were always played in the 70s
By whom ?
for whom underrated???
I so agree
Timeless Band ! Listening 2019 and beyond !
CARLOS EDUARDO Paiva right behind you... so many great memories from the famous last words tour I saw in 83
I still pull this album out and listen often.
Such a freakin smooth and harmonized performance
don't forget this was in 1979... imagine listening to this those days... probably people thought they were from another planet, I still think so.
Holy shizzle! The groups combined talent is out of this world! 😮
Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America were masterpieces. They knew they couldn't exceed anymore which led to their demise.
And l remember Crisis What Crisis too,not sure about Breakfast in America. Will check that one out, thanks.
Oh now l listen to Take the Long Way Home that album comes back to me,cheers.
Rick says this: "The band was winding down a bit, in a way, and Roger felt we'd peaked. But I didn't look at it that way, I think that bands have peaks and valleys. We'd worked so hard to get ourselves to that point, and it just seemed nuts to me to want to walk away from it. Maybe I'm more of a realist than Roger, but I thought we still had a lot of good music in us if we'd wanted to. So we continued on."
Mister Douglas 'Dougie' Campbell Thomson
is one of my favorite bass players of all time. I'm a guitarist by trade but it was his playing that inspired me to learn the nuances of bass lines - truly a creative master
Never overplayed, always left space for the other instruments, creatively worked the grove and syncopated the pocket
Always was impressed with SUPERTRAMP! One of the best bands in history. No click tracks here! Pure talent!
What a ridiculously talented bunch of folks on one stage. Playing music-- not dancing around, humping microphones and acting like jackasses. Just playing music for fans that totally appreciate the magic that's being performed in front of them.
True.
And their voices (tenor & falsett) sounds magic together (1:55)
During this time, John Holliwell didn't know how to play the Saxophone. He would go back to university to learn properly how to in 1987.
@@WilliamJones-sf5pt Nah, he was already one of the best woodwind players in pop and rock. The solo on the studio version is a masterpiece of tone and phrasing. Studying classical saxophone (in the 90s, not 87) was an addition on top of that.
@@progmeup Roger Hodgson liked to point out that he was the only one to receive a formal advanced education in sound. John Helliwell could also play the keyboards. He played might near everything. I think his mentioning to go back to learn how to truly play the sax was a jab at Roger.
I see John Helliwell as the equal to Roger. Rick is the one that stood out. People don't realize how great he was playing the drums. He just slid over to play percussion on the piano. His organ playing is also underrated. Rick let it slip out that he was once offered the opportunity to play organ in a band which he never played. So, he faked it.
Hahahaha! I laughed at this comment, because it's so fucking true. The shit forced onto unsuspecting minds and ears as to what is considered "music" of today, is sheer mind control lesser than shit . But it would fall on deaf ears and mush brains to all of a sudden have a market of music with the level of talent Supertramp had - it's too late. There's too many TikTok fucktards , now. I guess we'll all have to die with oldies but goodies as it is.
There will not be another band like Supertramp, neither in this decade nor in any future one.
There better be for our sake
Why would anyone dislike this? I loved this song when i was a kid.
It's stupid people
Pay them no mind. They’re to be pitied. Ignored, but pitied.
These guys would not only put all their money back into buying tickets for fans to get in free, but they could actually play their instruments as well. I always thought they achieved a profound sound. Turning the square into an interesting circle is what most successful groups accomplished. Supertramp seemed to take that added effort to prove, along a straight line, that one good note necessarily led to the next profoundly so!
soulless zombies
@@lema7030 You had to listen to them being played on at least a respectable sound system. Yamaha 1000m speakers. McIntosh Amp. This was their black covered album. Engineered supremely.
It helped to smoke some respectable grass.
An underappreciated band for sure!
For good reason!
Whaddya talkin about? They were huge in my day!
Supertramp's finist one of the best. ❤❤!!!
love the whole energy these guys create
Love that they didn’t try to copy the album version note for note. Saw them the same year as this clip. Amazing.
Freakin brilliant

They were just incredible band !! Such talent!! Love their music!! When music was Good❤
I'm not 100% sure, but if I ever get to step aboard a time machine, this concert in Paris will probably be the first destination...
Esse álbum sempre estará no top 10 da minha vida!!!
One of the most underrated bands of all time. What a performance! What a song!
Absolutely love that guitar tone!
Got the DVD of this concert for my birthday two years back. Goddamn, that was a great time in my life. Supertramp, specifically crime of the century, always brings back great memories of that time
I was able to purchase COTC as an LP in the late 70s - song after song, a total masterpiece and I built my own concept album interpretation, regardless of whether that was the intention of the band itself. Starting with School, then Hyde in your shell, Asylum, Dreamer, Rudy, a deep dive in all the social psychoses and stress inflicted by our society - and then the irony of the finale, Crime of the Century...wow, the perfect Album! I don't think it's an exaggeration to say it's at the level of Dark Side of the Moon. Crisis? What Crisis and BIA where excellent encores (and don't forget Even in the Quietest Moments) - what a band, WHAT A BAND!!!
This Would Be One Of The Many Bands I Would Have Loved To See In Concert Back In the Day ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Unfortunately….will never happen again….Rick and Roger don’t want to…
Had the honor of seeing them in Houston, Texas! This was in the 70's. Love them today and always.
@ that would have been a good decade to have seen them in action
I saw Supertramp at the Brighton Dome in 1976. There were seats empty. They came back two years later ("Crisis" tour) at the Metropole in Brighton. It was sold out in an hour.....so I never saw them live again!
I went to see Medicine Head ( remember them?) in Llandudno some years back. There were maybe twenty of us including the band, so sad. They were brilliant.
Perfect 🎹 intro
I love the way Roger expresses the (feels) the music!
Great "guitar face!"
What a great time being raised on music like this the 70s was the best
But only by music
Crime of the Century, one my favorite all time LPs. The music is brilliantly moving, but the recording is one the finest engineered vinyls ever pressed 🤗
Any relation to Aleister?🤔
It sent Pink Floyd back into the recording studio to redo Dark Side of the Moon.
Everyone should listen to "Breakfast in America" at least once. Great band.
Saw them on this tour. STILL the best concert I ever saw. Incredible how good these guys were
