- How to hook a set of double trailers? If it's done properly it shouldn't take long or be too difficult. Some of the most important things to do while hooking a set is making sure you are perfectly aligned before dropping your dolly or hooking.
So important things to remember while hooking your set of doubles one never yank or pull on equipment because you could call yourself an injury. Also make sure you're hooking up your service and emergency air in line so that you will have breaks while driving. Also make sure you do wind up that landing gear and that penile Hook is truly hooked!
Hopefully you find this helpful and you can learn a few tips or tricks yourself to make it easier to hook your set of doubles!

When lining up doubles to hook them, just remember, it's all about the tires. If the tires are lined up, you're good to go.
Generally speaking yes.
I got my career starting driving truck for a FedEx Ground contractor. Teamed for 2 years and ended up finding a local job pulling doubles. Just got tired of teaming and being out for 5-6 days. FedEx is the only company that I know that uses airbags on their dollys and trailers along with a parking break. I always waited for the dolly to air up first than back underneath of the trailer. The place I'm at now use all spring ride trailers and dollys. Have to prop something underneath the tire or dolly crank wheel to chalk it in place.
We are so blessed that our contractor works with us. Right now we are 2-3 days a week and run 10-18 weeks straight for peak. We both had worked for Conway now XPO prior. The stress is so much less at FedEx. We both live the air ride everything. Does make things smooth!
This is ideal, just started a week and a half ago. Problems i run into: trailers are too close so i can't lower the trailer, have to ask the yard dog to move it. Too tight so i have to drop my second trailer, my dolly then hook up. Can't find the trailers sometimes, especially empties. People keep taking them so i have to find new ones sometimes. Had it where the dolly was red tagged so i had to find another one and hook up all over again lol. Just to name a few but i'm trying to get better everyday, i like the job and i'm patient so theres that at least. This video helped me by the way, never hooked up before i even got the job so thanks a lot!
So glad this video was helpful. Yes I got the perfect set when it was time to make the video but that doesn't offen happen. Keep the positive attitude. With time you will learnore tricks to the trade. I (Angela) have been driving amd hooking doubles for 13 years. It takes time. The first year isn't the can be frustrating to say the least. Always take you time. Never rush amd most importantly stay safe amd enjoy the adventures!
My suggestion just started driving 5 months current. When you can't crank the trailer you could always drag it out.. but thats only if it's low enough to connect.
Only problems I run into now: something wrong with the trailers to where it won’t pass at the inspection check or dolly problems (leaking air, lights etc.) They finally updated it to where you can locate your trailers through the app. And even dispatch yourself 😄.
So glad I came across your video. I start next week with Sysco and was really nervous about doubles. Thanks💗
Congratulations on your new adventures!! If there is anyway we can help dont hesitate to ask questions! We are all here to show each other love! Many blessings!

Amazing video. Been pulling 53' trailers so far and always wondered how to hook up 2 trailers. Again, Amazing video. Thank you
Thank you for your kindness and love. I got lucky when it made this video. Everything was easy, side by side and on flat ground. Its definitely not always this easy. Stay safe and may God bless you.

@@SimpleLivin Well good for you..
Thanks for posting got road test for FedEx freight tomorrow. Was told i would need to hook up a set and drive so this was helpful
Best of luck tomorrow! So glad this was helpful. Many blessings
So the road test consists of you hooking up ?
Most companies that pull doubles make you hook the set then go on the road prior to being hired
Professional for sure
Thank you!
Oh my goodness I didn't know fed ex grounds could afford supermodels. Ha! Thanks for posting
Lol well thanks for the compliment and love!
I applied to get a driving job but I was told to get my doubles, triples endorsement and now I have to take a road test involving hooking up double, this video is really going to help.
Thanks for making it 🙂

I just started reversing doubles!!!! Feels amazing moving both pups backwards, tricky AF tho!!!! Also setting up doubles with the lead and dolley is fuuun!!!!! Once you get what to look for on the lead pup and dolley then you can back them up being perpendicular to connect them to the second pup trailer!!!
Yes we can both back the combo a short distance while hooked and back the dolly hooked to the lead trailer. Scott is better then me. Normally the lot is to busy to practice safely. Like you said fun to test your skill. Stay safe and many blessings
@@SimpleLivin thank you and blessing to both of you as well!!!! And yesssss really fuuun! Cheers!!!
I’m having some trouble backing the front box to the dolly, it always end up crooked when it backs under the back box
I taught myself how to back my dolly rather than spot it all the time. Takes some practice but definitely doable just as long as you are safe about it. Saves your back big time having to only lift the dolly once.
Absolutely agreed! We both can back the dolly a bit but unfortunately the yard is typically very congested and not enough space to do so safely.
Rochester ny been working fedex ground for few months now gonna do my doubles practice and road test
Do you know any contractors? Our boss is always looking for drivers!

You're welcome! We have been so satisfied working for FedEx as team drivers. We dont mind pulling doubles at all. I have pulled them since the start of my trucking career. 11 1/2 years ago. Best of luck and stay safe!
Thank you for the video. When you pull doubles, do you slide your 5th wheel on your tractor to the very last pin?
No in the normal position I'd say
Could you show how to backup a double train and what all to look for while backing up a B-train?
Love the Video Fantastic explaining think you was going to go get the endorsement🙂🙂🙏🙏
Thanks so much!
Been hooking them up for a long time if I'm not mistaken you forgot the latch Dolly latch
Your dolly latch
Hmmmm I think you are mistaken.
@@SimpleLivin lol
You are definitely mistaken. The dolly latch on this pup, unlocks at the top and the bottom of the latch kicks out over the pintle eye.....on your tractor the dolly latch closes over the top, as well as some pup styles....so she is good to go here brother.
Thanks for the love and support! I do appreciate it sir. Many blessings
Thanks for that video. The way you describing what you doing and the way you emphasizing safety shows a great teacher in you. Have you ever thought about teaching CDL course? That's what I do in Technical College environment and it's very rewarding career. I am going to ask my students to subscribe to your channel - you provide a lot of good, practical, and down to earth info for entry-level professional drivers. If you ever decide to teach, I would not hesitate to hire you.
Thank you so much for your kindness and encouragement! Amd a big thanks for promoting mybchannel to new students. I worked for Conway now XPO prior to FedEx. I competed in truck redo's regularly including state level placing 3rd. I also trained driver on how to do a p&d route. Honestly I found it hard to teach some men. They would struggle taking directions from me as a young small female. So I never thought past that. Did you get to check out the other videos for unhooking and what not to do when hooking?
May God bless
@@SimpleLivin Congrats on your competition achievements. Yes I did check your other videos. I like a lot your rest area safety tips. We usually have a couple of ladies in our cohorts, is it OK to show this video to our class during Driver Safety lecture? I think you did awesome job comparing to what I use currently from JJ Keller. In my program we have three female instructors and honestly they doing wonderful job. "Tough guys" I put in "difficult student" category and remind them that respect is expected from everybody, so any misbehavior is a grounds for dismissal from training. I remind them that they enrolled in our course to learn and my instructors can help them get the results so listening and following directions is in their best interest. Again, thanks for what you doing. Are you still on the road during this difficult times?

Glad you're well! Doubles aren't bad at all! You be safe and may God bless you
Do I need to modify my fifth wheel frame back in order to run the set?
How far between the frame of truck and the frame of the landing gear is enough?
See we would classify that as a type 1 road train in Australia, Been to trailers and a dolly.
My question is why run single axle trailers and dolly when could run a b double and then its alot easier to reverse, easier to drive ect.
That's a good question but unfortunately I don't have a great answer other then cost and that is the standards here
Weeeeeee line haul
Just got my Class A wish me luck 🙏
Many blessings amd best of luck! We cover alot of content to make living on the road and starting the trucking lifestyle a little easier. We hope it helps you in your new adventure!

🥰🤩 awww thank you!
New subbie
If can, can you get the measurement between lead trailer and pup trailer? It's around 4ft right? Down to the nearest inch would be nice.
I'm sorry I dont have away to measure it
I've worked with Dollys and trailers that had a release valve that you have to turn so that your air supply is running from your front trailer to the dolly all the way to your rear trailer. Do these trailers have that too or did you forget to mention that in this video?
No these don't have a valve
At my company, we are required to pull up, and go to rear trailer and crack the Emergency air valve to be sure all air is going thru the trailers.
Is that something you do or is it basically acknowledged by reading the guages in the cab?
It is somethings we do as well. After hooking out set there are pull lanes that we park in to do a final inspection and paperwork so we are not in the way of others
I am going to drive for FedEx . Pulling double . Any tips . This is my first job after cdl school. Ty
Take your time no matter how long it takes! Never rush! Always trip check!
Nice
Thankss
In the 3 years I have been with FedEx I have been to many hubs and never had the room you have to hook up my lead trailer. Most of the time it is backing at an angle to the dolly. Also here at the Independence hub we are not allowed to take a trailer off the dock, switchers must do it.
This was made at the Hagerstown, MD hub this part of the yard is much wide. It's also one of the larger hubs. Most hubs we have to angel hook as well. We definitely got lucky when we went to make the video lol
It drives me nuts that different hubs have different rules. Realto, CA you can't pull from the doors either.
Wish you the best of luck!! Be safe driver and may God bless you
How do you park with doubles? Do you have a video for that?
Pull through spots or along curbs. Legally hou can't back up
Hello Everyone, I'M Mechanic and just start my CDL, watching this video I got Question, When you get trailer like that, You have to Adjust the Brakes/ Check all lights if are Working... or when You going to get the trailer you get a paper showing that trailer have been inspected? Thanks, Have a great Labor Day \o/
Good question! Every driver is responsible for inspecting the unit themselves. After we hook the set we go to a pull lane to finish paperwork and do a final inspection. Many blessings and stay safe
Are the automonous trucks going to be able to do that on there own??
Actually, if you google European semis, you’ll see they have already mastered that dilemma.
Say my dolly is to the right of the black tape ..... i want to push it left a little when hooking to rear pup do i steer left to push the dolly left ?
Are you wearing the new FedX uniform?
Haha that's what we live about FedEx ground! You do not have to wear a uniform!
I'd like to hook up with that "set"!
How does one get into pulling doubble and triple trailers?
For me I stared at xpo they have a trucking school amd you get a job when you graduate. If you have a cdls you just get the endorsement. Though its always be to be diverse. Companies like xpo, ups, fedex freight amd other large companies. Yiu can expect to pull 53ft trailers,, 28 ft trailers double trailer, and triple trailers depending on location
how are the dolly's wheels able to move w/o the emergency brake line connected #headscratcher
How long does it take to do all that ? Looking for the dolly and trailer and then connect them .
Just really depends sometimes as little as 10mins other times when ypu can't find a trailers or the yard is full of other drivers hook could be a hour.
I don’t really see any wheel chocks on the trailers do they used them just in case of accidental roll
No need everything has breaks
Great video but on the last trailer you should’ve checked the air Air had gone through the whole system by opening Air Lines and listen for air Leaks
Thanks! Yes we do that when we pull to the launch pad. We write down the security seal # and check the equipment on last time.
Simple Livin this is a great learning Video
Thanks you!
I've looked for trailers disconnecting on the interstate. Majority if them is double trailers....whats main reason for the disconnections?
Its because of a miss hook most if the time either the drive high hooked or the jaws didn't fully lock.
Both can and should be caught with a proper pretrial inspection. Crazy enough it is possible to drive hundreds of miles before coming detached.
So we hook them up a bit different in Australia. My question is why don't you just back your dolly up to your dog and hook it up till it's locked using the truck instead of taking it off the truck? Then just back your lead up as usual and then do all your lines and lights?
Seems like more work doing it your way
Great question!! Because of weight distribution the dolly can't be hooked to the front of the trailer before being hooked to the rear of a trailer. It must be anchored to the front trailer or the nose (the front triangle) will pivet upward in the air.
More work but its a must for safety and the equipment won't work any other way.
Sorry didn't realize you'd replied. So in response to that why not do it how we do it over here then, as in hook up your lead to your dolly then back the dolly under your dog trailer? It's even less work then what I'd said before. That's how I do it and nearly everyone else I know does it.
gotta make sure pintle hook brake chamber is engaged and air is flowing to the end trailer
Absolutely!! We do all of those fine checks on the launch pad. That way we are not block the flow of traffic creating a dangerous situation.
What happens if you connect the chains but forget to lock the pindle hook? Would you be able to drive like that? 🤔
Good question! If you dont latch the hook and only the chains the likey hood of the dolly staying is pleace is not very high. It would most like result in dropping the rear trailer on the road way when you hit a bump... possibly resulting in a catastrophic event.
There is a air pin that pushes out and locks on to that dolly, I still wouldn't risk it but I've heard of guys for getting locked the pintle hook and getting away with it
I seen other not hook the airlines till they hooked the other trailer and they released the breaks on the dolly by pushing a button can you explain ?
The dolly for Fedex Ground is air ride. So by hooking the line before backing under the rear trailer allows the system to fill with air and be a proper height.
I hope that makes since
@@SimpleLivin yes it does thanks 👍
I didn't know what a dolly was at first, I thought she was physically pushing the trailer with her bare hands 😯

One things you will learn about FedEx is they change the rules ever few months and they are different at every hub.... it was required
@@SimpleLivin totally agree i didn't see that point
I just started I’m having trouble my back hurts 😩
Its exciting to see other females taking the step and becoming a truck driver. There are few things that could be making you back sore. 1 could be the seat. A crappy seat will make a sore back. 2. are you hooking doubles? if so have you watched my video on what not to do while hooking? You might find it helpful.
Simple Livin yes I’m hooking doubles the trainer I had was his first time training your video seem easy way but we stay getting out the truck pushing the dolly

@@SimpleLivin thank you
Wow cool How can. I get with FedEx ? Please

How long have you been driving for FedEx? I have been with them for 6 years and pull triples. I got hired with No experience and got trainer. I am usually a solo driver. I don’t do team driving often. I had to do a team driving a few weeks ago. I kicked the co driver out of the truck in the yard. I told the idiot to check the trailer and make sure there isn’t anybody in the trailer before pulling away from the door and he said that he doesn’t need to listen to me.. he pulls away and there was a package handler in the trailer that Jumped off and grabbed on to the Schute that’s tossing down the boxes. I kicked him out. No exceptions. I love working for FedEx.
We have been with FedEx for 3 years and LOVE IT! There is very little stress or drama. We are blessed to both be Experience and Independent drivers as well as husband and wife before coming to fedex to team. I dont know if I could ever really trust someone else. I glad you did the right thing and kicked that driver to the curb. Sounds like he has no business being a driver. I have never pulled triples but would love to give it a try. Where do you drive out of? Be safe and be blessed
Simple Livin I drive out of Utah. The driver told me he was a safe driver and didn’t have to listen to me. He told me he had been with Fedex for 7 months and that he came from C.R.S.T. Before and Talked to a previous co driver that was from the same company before Fedex. I told the unsafe co driver to go back to C.R.S.T. Because he still has a lot to learn.. I have been With FedEx long enough that I am able to back up the trailer with the dolly connected to it and back it up to the second trailer.
Simple Livin avoid drinking to Rialto or Portland hahaha their dispatching is terrible. They always seem to shut down teams and the Portland runs are trying with all the ups and downs on mountains. My favorite place to visit is Texas.
@@rustyshackleford6799 we have been to Rialto a few times. The first time like you said we got stuck there for a 6-8 hrs. We have done Texas... in amd back out! We like Orlando as well
Didn't check the valve and the rear of your second trailer to make sure you would getting the air all the way through the system
Did on the launch pad after I got out of the lane of travel in the yard.
Do you train drivers?

Do you team drive?
Yes, On average we cover about 1200 miles A-day
Would you train me?
Can you train me?
Hi. The wage is distinguish between the single trailer and double pups or no?
There isn't a huge increase in wage for pulling doubles. It depends on the company honestly
Yeah crankety crank
It’s a drawbar right ?
👍👍👍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🤫🤗
Why do you turn your airlines on just to back the dolly up
All of fedex equipment is air ride Suspension. When the equipment is dropped out and the air is released it drops the equipment lower so sometimes it causes a gap if you do not air up the dolly. It's much easier to connect the airlines then crack the landing gear
Oh I c
You so beautifull. Good work 💖😍
Thanks!
Video is very good, But before you move the TRAILER IN FEDEX you need to CHECK DOOR AND MAKE SURE THEYBARE CLOSED #SAFETYFIRST GIRL
I appreciate the concern BUT I/we did/do check doors. Safety is our #1!!! We both have Safety awards, truck redo company and state awards in top 3, hubby placed 8th in national redo in 2010 as well as April Pennsylvania drive of the month. We both have over 1 million miles safe driving solo and 1 million safe miles as a team. #safetyfirst
@@SimpleLivin awesome! But the way you procedure in the video is WRONG, WHY? Because
1- before you connected to a Trailer you need to check Door is closed why because in Case you connected and Door is open someone can get knock out inside the trailer.
2- Once you Connected into a Trailer you need to double check the Door still closed, why? Because something managers open the door again because they forgot some cases in the dock.
That's the reason why last year someone die on Matuche Base in New Jersey.
So for me this video is GOOD, But, next time make sure you have in the video as first checking the Door, and you know this if you really as good as you describe yourself ans your team partner.
I understand the concern from your first comment. I appreciate it. No need to treat me like a rookie.
Unfortunately we have witnessed a catastrophic event when a team member lost sight and crushed his mate between the dolly. We have also see other major injuries do to folks rushing and or not putting safety first.
Just out here doing our best to help others make the trucking life style a little easier. Also help others get a little insight. Many folks have been encouraged to get their license.
Fedex have some of the most skilled drivers on the road.
Amen! Thank you the recognition. We each have a million safe miles amd many awards. Do you drive FedEx?
No! You just know skilled driving when you see it.
Thank you sir! Many Blessings to you
Simple Livin Same to you! Be Safe!
Skilled at crashing! And I say this because I see it, I've been OTR, line haul and have seen FedWrex in the ditches more than any other trucking co. now what the cause or reason was is another story, but as a driver you should avoid having an accident or incident no matter what, is everything preventable absolutely not, but when I drive I drive defensively and have avoided wrecks that would not be my fault because I'm constantly aware of what's going on around me!
There is no need to hook the dolly air lines to the dummy/blocking gladhands on the dolly if you back the dolly under your tail trailer before hooking the dolly air lines to the lead trailer. I've been doing it that way for 35 years.
Mabe your dolly doesn't have air ride. If you allow the doll to air up before back under it releases the pressure on the landing making it easier to crack up. Also need to release the press while uncoupling the set. We typically drop one set then rehook
How much they pay for double t
$.60-.90 a mile
Most of the time it is not like this. I hate doing FedEx doubles because there isn't enough room. I also do Amazon and it is easier hooking up their doubles. Their dollies are way easier to move around than FedEx
Depending on what hub you go to it can be tight. It's crazy how different dollies are company to company. Always take your time. Stay safe!
Kicking your tires is not right way, use a hammer, check all lug nuts, check hub seal, go under the trailer and check brake chambers, air lines, drums, pads, frame, cross members! There's lot to do before you even move your trailer!
This was a hooking basic video. I cover all of thay information in the pre trip inspection video.
Seems as though you think I'm a rookie driver... far from it! Over a million miles accident free, company and state rodeo top 3 placement. Thanks for trying to tell me how to do a job I'm experience and above average in. Much love
Shouldn’t be any gap between the fifth wheel and the apron of the trailer.
There's not
My stepdad works for amazon prime
Where is he outta?
Morro tela rifas
You didn't check for air leaks after you hook up the air lines.
we do that when we pull to the launch pad. It's a safer area as well. We write down the security seal # and check the equipment on last time.
