How To Hook Up a Trailer, Dropped Too Low (+ A Trucker Story) 😎

- Sometimes, when a truck driver goes to pick up his trailer, he finds that it is too low to easily hook up to. In this video, Dave gives a work around to hook up to a trailer that is too low to slip the fifth wheel under.

Hey there Big Strappers. Thank you for taking the time to drop by to catch today's video. How about you? What's the deal with your company? Do you run into this situation often? Or are drivers more or less considerate and hooking up is pretty simple. Love to hear from you.
Unfortunately some carriers trucks dont have the switch enabled to lower the rear suspension so we are stuck cranking on the trailer in low gear till its high enough
This happens every so often. But the most memorable one happened to me picking up a load of kitty litter out of the Richmond area. This one wasn't caused by the driver before me dropping low, this one was caused by the shipper placing the 45000 pound load on sand. It sunk in 6 inches and I couldn't even get my forks under it even when dropping the bags. I had to low-speed crank the legs to get the trailer up above the lowered forks and then go through this whole process but with the forks first before the 5th wheel. All told took me 45 minutes to get it done in 95+ degree weather.. I didn't care what the yard jockey said I was taking my 30 right then and there.
You're the only trucking channel I follow, because you're the only one I've found that knows what you're talking about. Your experience shows, and I've never disagreed with anything, so far. Keep it up!
I have almost 30 years, and thought about starting a channel, until I found your's. You pretty much say everything I would, but better.
We've had drivers punch 2 holes in the front of trailers, with the 5th wheel! Sad, but true.
Unfortunately, this happens because trucks run different size tires and different height fifth wheels. I always kept some hardwood blocks in my sidebox to put on the frame of the tractor to lift the trailer and crank the legs down.
When I drop a trailer I like to leave 1.5 to 2.0 inches of space between gear feet and ground the lower trailer to ground and pull out. Make it easier for next person picking up trailer so they don't overrun 5th wheel plate because trailer to high.
Yea, good idea Kelly.
This guy should be a driving instructor, great advice
Man. That method is very handy. Too bad my company don't have air ride control like that so had to begrudgingly crank the trailer legs in the low gear? (Little to no resistance mode) which would take like 3 to 5 minutes.
Even longer if it's a trailer that's been put away by yard jockeys where there's physically no space for a trucker to crank and have to crouch under and crank. Worst thing when there isn't a yard jockey available.
Had a problem with always getting low trailers at my yard. I would get the jockeys to raise it but they were always angry when I asked. I had to figure out a way to do it on my own so I like what was in the video. It works 90% of the time but only if your tires don't touch the tailor while the bags are dumped
Here in Europe there are valves on the trailer to control the airsuspension, if a trailer is too low, I generally drop the suspension on the trailer, making the front rise up.
Was to hook to flat bed pre-loaded. It had the landing gear all the way up. The nose was about 3 foot above the ground. Took me over an hour of extreme manual labor cranking to raise high enough to hook. The company was open 24 hours but refused to use yard truck or fork lift to raise trailer. My schedule forced me to work hard for fault of others.
I love your channel I’ve been driving for many years but whenever I get in a slump I come to you for advice
I drop and hook constantly, I already do this, but it's great that your showing it. I enjoy your channel and when I was starting used your video on driving in the snow...keeping her high in the rpms when Ascending..
Hey that's awesome... you remembered!
Exactly right, Dave, that’s how it’s done. Loved your story! What a dope! Too lazy to do it the right way so instead he damages the truck AND the trailer. Hope they fired him. Being impatient NEVER works out well.
I would always carry some 2x6's cut into small blocks to put under the landing gear to do the same thing. Container chassis are notorious for being real low.
Thank you Dave for all the gems of knowledge we love ya man.
Also good to know some folks get value from these videos.
Great info, however this is impossible with my spring ride, 1984 K100 on tall rubber (I sit at 13' 7" tall at the front of the trailer).... I drop and hook several trailers a night and have to constantly either hop out and manually lift the loaded trailer or gently back under the trailer. I'm sure my clutch is not happy with me...
Thank you.. usually I use the landing gear handle to raise it but it’s tiring this way.. next time I will try your way..much better definitely.
That's a handy trick to learn. Thanks Dave
Couple of other tips:
If there's room to hookup at an angle, sometimes that might be a good second option if the primary method described here doesn't work. For example, what if the trailer is too low, but on careful examination you notice one corner is higher than the other. Verify with your level. (You have a small bubble level in your bunk to make sure your head is always on the high side when sleeping, right?). Check the ground as well. (Level on a board or a tape measure if it's not obvious) I've even scraped away dirt and gravel with a piece of scrap pallet wood to lower the ground level before. It's surprising what a difference an extra inch or two of clearance makes.
Also, if the trailers next to it are too close for this (or you can get hooked up but can see ahead of time it will be nearly impossible to crank the landing gear) do not be afraid to grab a neighboring trailer (or two!) and move them out of the way so you can get yours out.
How about when its so low the back drives bounce forward off the front of the trailer?
I seen someone get stuck in the exact same way. He spent a good 30 mins cranking the landing gear in order to get out. It was painful to watch.
Lots of Rookies out there
Excellent tip, thank you.
Nice, always get to learn from you guys, 😊
Man!!!! My reply always have it too high!!! Loaded with mail and magazines! So hard to to crank down these old trailers!
Just got this problem and thanks GOD who guided me to you...I got it finally!!!...Thanks so much Sir...May GOD bless you so much!!!!
Love this channel. Reminds me of my dad lol
One of my drivers just lost the trailer pulling off the dock about 10 yards out, so I had to check out some videos.
Thats a great story 😂
Love it!
Good tip!
Would’ve saved me sm effort ty sm
What a performance. Haha!
good tip!
Man that's good.
Thanks makes sense
Better than my way. Low gear crank slowly for an hour. Of course, it's heavy, good luck.
just gotta crank the landing gear up in low gear until it's high enough
I used to carry 4x4 and 2x4 hardwood. Drop the air then put the wood on the frame and inflate air bags.
Holy Poop - so many times. Got very good at this.
THAT GUY'S NOW THE HEAD OF THE SAFETY DEPARTMENT AT SWIFT
Couple hundred feet! 🤣🤣🤣
Yea, it was embarrassing to watch. Couldn't believe my eyes. This was an owner operator too. Man that was an ugly situation.
Great tip and even greater story about that idiot trucker. Boy did he learn his lesson that day😄👍
God bless thanks
Never driven a truck before, although i think it would be an interesting profession. Even i know "ramming" a trailer is a bad idea haha
I think finding a loaded trailer to high is just as bad even trying to crank it down in low gear in the winter when the grease is stiff as a board. By the time you get it right you’re sweating like it’s summertime
Just applied for a job with GP Transco, hoping to hear back from someone soon.
Hey Anthony. If you don't hear back soon, let me know. Email me from the website... any page has the email contact form www.smart-trucking.com/
An awful lot of company trucks do not have dump valves..
And what about if it’s lower than the frame or tires sir? 😂😂😂😂😂
So what if your tractor doesn't have air bags, what you do then?
People don't just naturally know this?
Why not just raise up the trailer with the landing gear?
My Freightliner 2019 has no air dropping… thanks though
Can you just drop the airbags and hook up to the trailer then just raise the trailer with the airbags?
Not every company I have worked for has invested in the air-bag option on their trucks (ie...jb hunt).....then what do you do big strapper??? You have no choice in the matter! Just saying!
I like it but that was make up stories, great vid as usual, thanks 🙏
Wish you had that story on video...lol.
You and me both!
I drive 2023 freightliner cascadia but I don’t know how or button to drop air on the airbags, anyone with the idea ?
😂😂😂😂😂
Not all trucks are capable of lowering the airbags.
Keep some wooden blocks on the truck.
All I do is drop and hook.
That's great you don't have to deal with these things Adam.
The one problem is some trucks you can’t lower the airbags, in that case, you just have to crank it up. I don’t know if it’s just me but I’ve jumped the fifth wheel about 8 times in 4 years, 6 with reefer and 2 with dry van. I don’t know if one is more common than the other but that’s been my experience.
My truck can't do that.
You don't have to lower the landing gear or your suspension once you're under the trailer, you go ahead and back up to hook to it. That's unnecessary extra work for nothing.
