I owned a trucking company with 1200 employees. I also drove a million miles in my life. I wish all my drivers were as good as you. Dealing with doubles is a hard hustle. Hard work and great attitude. Thanks for putting a good face on the industry. Stay safe out there.

Everything that you covered in this video I learned from a FedEx driver that took the time to show me the proper way to safely hookup and unhook and it only took one time because I definitely paid attention. Just couldn't figure out the beeping noise. Made a new friend in the process and four years later I married her. Thanks for the informational/training video. The thing I hate about going to a FedEx yard is how the trailers are dropped anywhere and everywhere which makes it hard for me because I haul trailers exclusively for my company for the most part and when dollies and trailers are all over the place it makes my job more difficult and takes a lot longer for me to get in and out of the FedEx yard. Great video! I pulled triples for FX for many years and enjoyed the challenge. A few bits of information for you, inside the pintle hook that little tongue is called a snubber. We keep our fingers clear of the loop because those dollies have ballast in the tail end to keep the tongue weight easy to manage. Sometimes if it has too much it will pop up violently. A dolly can weigh up to 2800lbs so never wrestle one, you'll lose. In your blooper where you struggled to get the dolly to the pintle, bounce the dolly off the second trailer to get momentum if the trailer isn't sitting too high. Also make sure when you go to air up the trailers that you're absolutely sure the tractor brakes are still set. I've seen many ghost trucks in the FX yards and drivers about to get fired for causing damage. Safe travels!

Before being an Owner Operator I drove for Roadway and CF pulling doubles. Ma’am this has got to be the best video I have ever seen explaining the hookup and drop of double trailers. Exelent job. Just be glad you will never have to Jif up a tractor ( jufing up is sliding a converter dolly “jiflox” into the tractor frame making the tractor a tandem) now that is a greasy mess.

The struggle is real on even the slightest incline with those dollies, I’m always trying to choose the lighter ones like you had. Sometimes if you can get a good angle on the tires it can help to push on them directly to get it out of a rut. Going at it alone is rough!

Great vid, one thing I never forgot that we were told in CDL school (20yrs. Ago). Consistency "Always hook and unhook the same way all the time." Pick a way and stick to it. I believe that the start from the front when hooking and start from the back when unhooking may be an accident waiting to happen.

Being a seasonal fed ex driver out of wichita ks, this video is pretty much spot on. The beeping is for low air pressure, and that includes the tires. Fed ex trailers has it set up when you hook up the air if a tire is low, it starts airing up the low tire to the set pressure. So if a tire starts to lose pressure faster than it can fill it, there is a lite that comes on on the trailer that let's the driver know to check your tires. I thought that was pretty cool when I started there.

Hi Shelby, your an inspiration to All those women who would like to be a trucker, your instructions were great, no fluff, just tell it like it is. And the end when I saw you struggling whith the dolly I thought a 2x4 hanging on two bits of rope so it trails close behind the dolly wheels would stop it rolling back, as you inched it forward. In the days of horse drawn wagons they had the same thing dragging behind the wheels to stop rolling back on hills, just my two cents from this old timer. Thanks for the video, stay safe , best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart.uk.

No answering the phones, no talking or looking around doing something else. Distractions can cause great disasters. So avoid distractions as much as possible.

Worked for FDX back in the day, worked in the yard along with a lot of other tasks. I got bit by a dolly once while lining up a set of doubles. Hand slipped off the donut and got caught between the back of the trailer and the donut when i was rolling it into place. My hand swelled to double the size within about 10 minutes. Nothing broken but made for grabbing gears a lot of fun and chewed aspirin/tylenol for a few days until the swelling went down. I was lucky, but that is a lot of heavy metal moving around for those "wobble wagons" as you called them.

Good tutorial Shelby. Only thing I would add is high hook issues. Sometimes we cannot get the landing gear to lower to the proper position. At that point we have to air up the dolly and it's a whole different scenario at that point.
Side note: We lost a guy here in Oregon a few years ago while he was hooking up trailers. I have taught myself to hook doubles up a little different when hooking near other trailers because of that, if you're interested in hearing about it. Drive safe and thanks for doing what you do.
