Hi dr Andrea, great video on Turmeric! Great channel!
I love Turmeric, I used to make turmeric latte to stop any pain naturally.
    Turmeric contains the chemical curcumin.
Curcumin and other chemicals in turmeric might decrease swelling (inflammation).
To intensify its benefit, it must be consumed with black pepper.

Traditionally in India, we apply turmeric powder directly on the cut wounds some times along with pure coconut oil, which helps heel and bind the would. Turmeric works as antiseptic too..

Hi Dr. Andrea, thank you for your summary of curcumin as a therapeutic for inflammation. It would be more appropriate to compare curcumin to Tocilizumab or Sarilumab as it inhibits IL6 and does not really act as a traditional NSAID. Inhibition of IL6 does help with inflammation, but it also has negative consequences for the kidney, liver, urinary bladder, gall bladder, etc. It is important for immunity and tissue regeneration. In other words, the clinical trial on post operative patients should have never been approved. I hope that you will clarify the difference between cox1, cox2, and IL6 antagonists to the public. Realising the difference between these inflammatory pathways can help people to make educated decisions. Keep well and I hope you keep up the good work 🙂

The effect of taking Turmeric and Curcumin for me was insurmountable in comparison with other drugs that I had been prescribed.
Opioids, morphine and anti inflammatory drugs were the worst for me in terms of pain management. It was turmeric and curcumin that made a world of difference for me.

Hi doc, just found your channel. Very informative. I am a mid 60's male. I do cardio in the morning and weights at night, so I always have some of soreness. I tried Turmeric last year for 6 months. Not exactly a double blind placebo controlled study I know. But I had absolutely no change when I started it and none when I stopped. Though I did have one serious side affect. My Levothyroxin was binding to something in the Turmeric preparation and was totally screwing with my TSH levels. I have before and after labs to prove it. That said, I have not had a nighttime calf spasm since I increased my Mag. citrate level to 400mg per day about a year ago.

So long story short I would get sudden headaches that would last 45 to 90mins probably 3-4 times a week. Alot of times they would be pretty bad and I would have to lay down for a little. I believe they were migraines. This was pretty consistent for maybe 4-5 years or so.
About 6 months ago i stopped using salt and spices on my food and started using straight black pepper and turmeric. In my eggs, chicken, fish, even on a sandwich (taste good honestly)
Now I maybe get a mild headache once every two weeks. Pretty much the random mild headache of a normal person. It legit 100% without a doubt works.

Here is an easy recipe to incorporate turmeric in your diet: take 1 cup raw turmeric root, white and orange, add 1 cup ginger root. Add 1 teaspoon black pepper powder. Juice of 6 lemons. Quarter cup ghee. I tablespoon salt. Quarter t pink Himalayan salt. Quarter cup honey. 8 cloves of garlic. Blend to a purée. Divide into seven parts. Keep in fridge. Add to your main meal of the day, one part per person. I have added this to a chipotle burrito bowl, pasta, burger, eaten it on fries, added to hummus. If you skip the garlic, salt, and lemons, you can add this to your fruit smoothie too.

Hi Dr Andrea, great video on Turmeric! would you know the ratio of turmeric powder to Black pepper ?

    • @DrAndreaFurlan
      @DrAndreaFurlan  2 года назад +1

According to the UMass Chan Medical School, with just 1/20 teaspoon or more of black pepper, the bioavailability of turmeric is greatly improved, and turmeric’s benefits are further enhanced. www.umassmed.edu/nutrition/blog/blog-posts/2019/6/using-black-pepper-to-enhance-the-anti-inflammatory-effects-of-turmeric/

Are you sure about that? I don't know that the properties are lost when cooked.

Absolutely. In India, most cuisine has a combination of spices with turmeric which as you rightly mentioned enhance its absorption and also abate the side effects you mentioned. There are some varieties in eastern India which have a higher curcumin content.

Indonesia has not only *regular turmeric* , but also *white turmeric* and *black turmeric* . Regular turmeric _(curcuma domestica)_ is used for cooking Indonesian food and for making _jamu_ or Indonesian herbal medicine to maintain good physical health. White turmeric is not as popular as regular turmeric. It is usually used for cancer treatment here. There are three kinds of white turmeric known here on the island of Java: _curcuma zedoaria, curcuma mangga_ and _kaempferia rotunda_ . The black turmeric _(curcuma aeruginosa)_ is not popular, either. It is used to rid the body of threadworm infections. These three kinds of turmeric are sold in traditional markets throughout Indonesia. To buy white turmeric and black turmeric, however, people need to order first. The herbal ingredient seller needs time to get those roots because they are not popular.

Of course, if you experimentally take "double" the amount of anything that any population is habituated to you should be aware of problems popping up. I would not try to eat the hot peppers that some populations are habituated to either. I take 1/4 about 500mgs per day. I want the benefits without the problems. I (love x 2) Indian food, but I always order it mild. The lowest effective dose of pepper is usually the best.

@@DrAndreaFurlan In Sweden, where i live, food supplements with extracts of ginger and turmeric can be purchased in health food stores. In grocery stores they sell fresh ginger and turmeric as well as ginger and turmeric as spices, in jars with dried powder made of these plants. The spices in the grocery stores are a lot cheaper than the food supplements in health food stores. Does it matter in which form i take this? Are food supplements better than spices, and could fresh ginger and turmeric be better than food supplements or spices?
