That's because Skydog was the most humble musician on the planet.
Duane could BLOW Mean rotten woman/child beating Dickey out of the water!
The Allmans NEVER Hit a woman or their children
Gregory had to pay him to stay away...ALL of them had finally had enough

    • @marlenegb3267
      @marlenegb3267 3 года назад

@Roysten Mantis Ask Dickey where BlueSky is? He doesn't know. WHY? He beat her with a piece of STOVE PIPE, and Skydog found out and recused her and their daughter, and she's living under an assumed name. Guess who was paying her child support all those years? His name was Gregory Lenoir Allman
As far as Dickey as a Guitarist, if he wasn't great, Skydog would never have put him in his band. The one thing I can say is Dickey has always felt guilty that he was in Florida when Duane had his accident, and he did LOVE Duane.
Look at Berry, He went from not wanting to play in Duane's band, to not being able to live without him. Gregory was bigger physically, but Duane was bigger in every other way. Duane changed everyone's life that knew him, and changed Southern Culture. When he played session work in AL, he said the only thing they hated worse then Black folk, were those damn long haired hippies.
He didn't march, or picket, all you had to do was LOOK. When you saw his band you saw a Black man and a bunch of long haired hippies...GET THE MESSAGE....It took a little bit...But THEY GOT IT
Some say today they would have diagnosed Dickey as bi-Polar...

SHredding is for egomaniacal pussies. Edward was the one that introduced shredding and he was the originator and the master of it. Then everyone copied it like a bunch of parrots. YJM took it to another level and he deserves credit. BUT - DICKIE is one with the guitar and plays with FEEL and puts his spirit into every note - and most importantly, he moves WITH the music, not over it like shredders. People can listen to Dickey all day and his songs are fun and good to listen to - not vehicles for guitar histrionics.

I have always thought that "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" is one of the most beautiful and intensely passionate guitar songs ever. The performances of every member of the band on the long version on the Fillmore East album are expressions of true artistic inspiration. The version Dickey does with his son on the You Tube "instructional" version ascend into the realm of jazz. Dickey Betts' guitar playing is transcendental.

"If you dont do anything, something is bound to happen." Think about that. Our modern culture is obsessed with never feeling bored. Scared to feel empty and un-entertained lest they need to actually look inward and feel sadness. Instead, Dickey the artist embraces that emptiness. He sees it as a valuable part of living.

The ABB was Duanes band, but Dickey's contributions were extremely important. They were a band in the truest sense of the word, from the twin guitars to the drum section of Butch Trucks and Jaimoe pounding out polyrhythms, the lead bass of Berry Oakley almost acting like a third lead guitar at times, and finally, Greg Allman, possibly the best white blues singer ever. I agree that Derek and Warren are the best two guitarists since the beginning, but nothing can top the original band.

Dickey is an icon of American music --masterful, uniquely styled compositions and I hold him to be the best "lick" player. Unfortunately, many overlook him when he played with Duane. However, listen to those tracks again -- Dickey was a perfect compliment to Duane's style. I still shake my head in amazement -- & I've been a guitar player for 48 years!

The inspiration for me with this interview is that he's stretching to come up with words to describe the mojo of how music just happens ... It's refreshing that that never changes , than goodness ! This guy is an inspiration and a hell of a guitar player . What he says about instrumental titles ... is awesome . Thanks Rickey ... keep rolling

Not only is Mr. Betts one of the most underrated guitarists and songwriters of all time, he has some of the most killer style ever known to man. Check out when the band played at the Florida bandshell in 1980, I believe. It should be here on RUclips. Absolutely rad!

      You're overrated...🎸 Dickie was never 'underrated' ... 🎵
You know nothing, we appreciated him very much in the seventies even in Beirut, Lebanon where I grew up.
The Saturday night 3 hour blues/rock show on the radio used an ABB songs to open, Les Brers in E minor, we were 15 or 17 then😂

Melissa Ward: Agreed. And you can sense some frustration in giving the creative process all the space in the world and not seeing anything emerge. This interview in its entirety explains Mr. Betts's unwise (as it turns out)) decision to come out of retirement last year. I'm hoping he his health recovers and that finally laying down his guitar will lead him to a more peaceful place this time around. He has fans who love him and his beautiful canon of work, and that these will suffice at last.

Good on You wmb, Dicky Betts is one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived. Whatever his path now, he reached the top and shined bright as any of the best and achieved what 95% of most guitarists ever dream of. He is a major influence on my guitar style... We all get old...God Bless Dicky, he's a living legend...

Don't be a dick to Dickie, because:
    1. He wrote and sang some of the most beautiful (Elizabeth Reed, Blue Sky) as well as some of the most memorable (Ramblin' Man) songs from that era.
    2. Unlike many other musicians and drug users of that era, he is alive, and managed to make himself relevant into the 90's (Seven Turns, anyone?)
    3. Great as the reformed ABB was, they lost all of their country and jazz influence without him, I would argue a greater loss than Duane or Berry, who were both great instrumentalists, but not writers.
    4. Try being a touring musician for nearly 50 fuckin' years, then tell me how gracefully you've aged.
    5. We all get old and dodgy, but this man's accomplishments and music will continue for decades after he's dead and gone. Who will remember you?
    Peace

I agree with everything except for #3. Hittin' the Note was a great record with jazz (especially Desdemona) and country influence. Derek Truck's diversity (of course influenced by Dickey) goes way beyond most guitarists in the world.

You can't bully a great composition and Betts is the guy who's proved it again and again.Getting passed what people are focusing on,wet brain, pouring a drink, what the fuck does any of that shit mean? This motherfucker lives and dies for his art,and waiting for real inspiration is what separates him from mediocre background music "professionals".He's coming across crystal clear as a giant creative force.Nobody plays like this beautiful musician. He stands alone, has left his mark and sounds like he ain't done yet.God bless him and players who walk a similar path. Thank you for uploading this conversation.Insightful.

Dicky has always been a down to earth, straight shooter. He has nothing to prove to anyone and could care less about acting a certain way or coming across as a star or celebrity. This interview reminds me if what it would be like to shoot the breeze with him in his kitchen. He's fine. He's still Dicky and I still have and always will have a ton of respect for this man.
