I've watched his official music video, and I have to say, this live performance on Conan was far superior. My god, the way he holds the notes and croons only to end it with that growling delivery near the end. You can literally feel the visceral pulse of the beast coming through those final lines, only to end on the softest notes with the last line. It is mesmerizing and full of enthrallment. It's like he's weaving magic with each note instead of singing lyrics. And that drummer accompaniment to the very end is just the cherry on top.

This Conan video and the original video release have been viewed over a billion times. After this performance, Paul Simon messaged him and told him he approved of this version.

Simon and Garfunkle did folk-type music. Some of their songs were very lightly rock-ish, like Bridge Over Troubled Water, sorta, but Scarborough Fair is pure folk, frex. Disturbed is a *very* heavy rock band -- check out Down With the Sickness for something that's more their usual thing -- and their harder, rougher, and by the end angrier version of Sound of Silence is completely awesome. @@msdarby515“Hello darkness, my old friend…” Everybody knows the iconic Simon & Garfunkel song, but do you know the amazing story behind the first line of The Sounds of Silence? It began 62 years ago, when Arthur “Art” Garfunkel, a Jewish kid from Queens, enrolled in Columbia University. During freshman orientation, Art met a student from Buffalo named Sandy Greenberg, and they immediately bonded over their shared passion for literature and music. Art and Sandy became roommates and best friends. With the idealism of youth, they promised to be there for each other no matter what. Soon after starting college, Sandy was struck by tragedy. His vision became blurry and although doctors diagnosed it as temporary conjunctivitis, the problem grew worse. Finally after seeing a specialist, Sandy received the devastating news that severe glaucoma was destroying his optic nerves. The young man with such a bright future would soon be completely blind. Sandy was devastated and fell into a deep depression. He gave up his dream of becoming a lawyer and moved back to Buffalo, where he worried about being a burden to his financially-struggling family. Consumed with shame and fear, Sandy cut off contact with his old friends, refusing to answer letters or return phone calls. Then suddenly, to Sandy’s shock, his buddy Art showed up at the front door. He was not going to allow his best friend to give up on life, so he bought a ticket and flew up to Buffalo unannounced. Art convinced Sandy to give college another go, and promised that he would be right by his side to make sure he didn’t fall - literally or figuratively. Art kept his promise, faithfully escorting Sandy around campus and effectively serving as his eyes. It was important to Art that even though Sandy had been plunged into a world of darkness, he should never feel alone. Art actually started calling himself “Darkness” to demonstrate his empathy with his friend. He’d say things like, “Darkness is going to read to you now.” Art organized his life around helping Sandy. One day, Art was guiding Sandy through crowded Grand Central Station when he suddenly said he had to go and left his friend alone and petrified. Sandy stumbled, bumped into people, and fell, cutting a gash in his shin. After a couple of hellish hours, Sandy finally got on the right subway train. After exiting the station at 116th street, Sandy bumped into someone who quickly apologized - and Sandy immediately recognized Art’s voice! Turned out his trusty friend had followed him the whole way home, making sure he was safe and giving him the priceless gift of independence. Sandy later said, “That moment was the spark that caused me to live a completely different life, without fear, without doubt. For that I am tremendously grateful to my friend.” Sandy graduated from Columbia and then earned graduate degrees at Harvard and Oxford. He married his high school sweetheart and became an extremely successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. While at Oxford, Sandy got a call from Art. This time Art was the one who needed help. He’d formed a folk rock duo with his high school pal Paul Simon, and they desperately needed $400 to record their first album. Sandy and his wife Sue had literally $404 in their bank account, but without hesitation Sandy gave his old friend what he needed. Art and Paul's first album was not a success, but one of the songs, The Sounds of Silence, became a #1 hit a year later. The opening line echoed the way Sandy always greeted Art. Simon & Garfunkel went on to become one of the most beloved musical acts in history. The two Columbia graduates, each of whom has added so much to the world in his own way, are still best friends. Art Garfunkel said that when he became friends with Sandy, “my real life emerged. I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.” Adapted from Sandy Greenberg’s memoir: “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness into an Extraordinary Vision for Life."

I've known and lived this song pretty much all my life in its original Simon and Garfunkel form, Disturbed took it to another level, thanks for reviewing it
Some people are just crap at reacting yet still insist on making reaction videos. They only get views because people come here to listen to amazing songs.
Dude packs a whole day's worth of events into one song with that vocal range. Wake up, little stretch, move around a bit, get some work done, get a little crazy at night, come home, lay your head down on the pillow and go back to sleep.
David Draiman...amazing range and control...a powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do . He is so unique as he actually puts vibrato on his distortion!....also VERY difficult to do...one of the best male vocalists on the planet imho. Loved your reaction.
I must say that I am very impressed with your family. Mom you are a great mom. Your kids respect you, listen to you and love you and each other. It is so important to have a nuclear family with a mom and dad. Plus you all lived in different countries than your home country, so that makes the family closer and very open to different cultures. I was raised in a military family and we traveled overseas. Great video reaction! ❤️👍
Wow, lots of emotion there…Mom was so cool, she knew a great voice, the other two looked like they were bored to death. David has one of the most incredible voices I have ever heard, it’s a powerhouse song, I get goosebumps listening to it, and the range is amazing. Thank you Mom for appreciating talent, the other two could use a nap!
This is such an amazing cover of a great song. IMO, the sound here fits the lyrics better than the original. And David's voice is amazing. Disturbed is a hard rock/metal band. I'm sure you've all heard their song, "Down With The Sickness."
My mind sees it as Simon & Garfunkles version is a warning, of an impending disaster, this version is after the disaster, looking back on the warning we missed.
He had really bad flu when he sang this which made it even more incredible, and you can hear two bits of auto tune. David went mental when he got backstage because it was used without his consent
This same line keeps getting repeated in every reaction video comment section. I have yet to find and interview or direct quote from David or the band that validates any of this. Do you know of any? Genuinely interested in finding it.
@@jamiemacdonald436 he doesn't look like he has terrible flu at all he would have crapped his pants and you'd see it on his face. There's nothing odd in his singing, like smelly cat. His voice is processed at least with echo and reverb but why a show would add auto tune seems like nonsense to me given all of the garbage that's aired over the decades
@@jamiemacdonald436 I was once abused for making the comment about his eyes looking as if he was feverish. The reply was that he was stoned. The explanation they gave was that this style of singing was unusual for him (true, he’s said in interviews that he was unsure about returning to this style of singing after many years of heavy rock/metal), and he was nervous about performing that style live, his voice exposed, nowhere to hide a mistake in front of millions of people (again something he has said.) He uses marijuana (he has said he doesn’t attempt to create without it). So that is a possibility and the other a myth that's grown up. Or an illness could be the truth.
I saw them in concert for the first time in 2002 not long after their debut album, it's a train I never intend to get off of. The original singers have come out and said it's Disturbed song now.
Not knocking on David, he is an amazing professional vocalist, his notes are all perfect and if you listen carefully, you can sometimes detect autotune. I understand the you have to be truly an exceptional vocalist to constantly perform and not need autotune, but nowadays, I don't have much of a problen with it if they are just doing an appearance on a late night talk show. I applaud him for even showing up and not canceling with his condition.
@@odomisan David was pissed that autotune was used because he doesn't use autotune at all. He was sick and he actually ended up in the hospital the morning after this performance. The producers of the show decided to use autotune. He heard it while on stage and couldn't do anything right then but once he was off stage he let the producers know just how mad he was. David is a nice guy as long as you don't piss him off.
Hey this is the third time I've heard reviews by this family. How do I remove myself from this list? How do they qualify to even critique or comment on music? It turned my brain into an ice cube and damn it now it's slowly melting... Crap!
Love disturbed, David Draeman writes all their music and no matter how heavy it is the messages in the songs are brilliant. Simon and Garfunkel are legends, one track they made is called silent night/7 oclock news well worth a listen
Given that the original is a classic I always felt bad that I disliked the original..can’t get enough of this version because of the power in his vocals💜
I’ve never heard this song, I loved it and your reaction! It’s very powerful and I downloaded it and listened over and over on my way home. On another note, I LOVED y’all’s reaction to Best of South Park part one…”I’m just a little girl, a dainty little thing, and I know you all want to be, a little white girl like me.” I’ve never seen Sophie laugh so hard! At first she tries her best to keep it inside right from the start, and then you all hysterically laugh when the cops get the male judges for doing their ‘business’ under the table. Aiden with his grin, looking to the side in an almost this is some crazy shit and Gaynor right along with them! I was crying laughing with y’all! Aiden, I agree. Jesus Christ! Y’all are the best, part of my daily routine watching new episodes or catching up on one’s I haven’t seen. From Houston to Manchester…sending my best wishes to you all!!!

I love both versions. They are different experiences, but both great. Reminds me of Johnny Cash's rendition of Nine Inch Nail's Hurt. Or Whitney Houston crushing her remake of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You.
I consider those songs to be respected tributes to the other artists. I dislike how many people talk about which one is 'better', because it's not about competition. It's about showing respect to the artist and expanding their voice because they stand behind the message.
Soooo many artists do remakes of these classic songs , thats probably how tou know some of them, i was a teenager in the 80s so i know the qorda to every song, brings back alot of memories 😊
This song was my fav in the 60's by Simon ? Garf. They did it in the style of that time and this band has beautiully brought it to today. What a treat to still hear talent
Down with the sickness in the year 2000 put Disturbed on the map, great song. Been around a long time, 2006 they were up for billboards rock artist of the year but didnt win. Did win it in 2017 at iHeart Radio awards though. Nominated for 2 grammys also.
Thanks! I keep coming back to this video. Love his voice and y’all’s reaction…so deeply into his voice the first time, like I was when I heard it a few weeks ago after y’all posted it. 😊 It was so interesting to hear from other guys posts on here that he had the flu while singing this on Conan. I can tell a difference in his voice from the one I got on my iPhone. He sounds even better on this video. If that’s not talent, I don’t know what the hell is?!
Disturbed is so versatile its just amazing! Now that you have heard this listen to Down with the sickness and then Hold on the memories. David's voice is powerful and on point at both ends of the spectrum!
Another amazing cover of an amazing song is "Hurt". Covered by Johnny Cash towards the end of his life and the video is also very moving. The song was written by Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails. Also I understand Disturbed's lead singer had a stinking cold when he recorded this performance.
Simon and Garfunkle sang this as a warning of things to come, this is talking about the reality and results of our inattention to that warning. He trained as a cantor, so he has so much mastery over that wonderful voice.
David Draiman's vocal range is absolutely insane and he never seems to strain it. As has been said, he was trained as a cantor in his younger days, but chose to take up the world of heavy metal rather than stay within the Jewish religion (despite his grandfathers disapproval).
this song was written about a very hard time on american history and how disconnected people had become. Disturbed decided to cover it because how the song it resonates today because how i disconnected humans have become because of cel phones.
She isn't a Disturbed fan if she think's Draiman's voice is like velvet LOL. That tells me that this is literally the only Disturbed song she has ever heard!
He's covering Simon & Garfunkel's original, which I grew up on in the 70s. David Draiman, although a heavy metal singer, has a background as a trained opera singer, thus his gifted vocals.
So funny because my mother introduced me to this song but I've been a big fan of Disturbed and they're hard rock versions of music but my mother called me and said you had to hear this... One of my favorite songs absolutely without a doubt. I love how the mom is introducing the kids to disturb❤❤❤
Disturbed made a song called “into the fire” and it’s such a an amazing and deep song. The music video is so moving, I can’t help but tear up everytime.
As you can see he has been musician for quite long time, I have long list of similar bands that are under the same type of genre of music which despite their band name, they can be found under categories of rock and/or christian rock.
This song always makes me tear up because it reminds me of my father's singing voice and it's almost like I can hear him. It's even a song he would sing.
Dealing with a hard flu and fever while doing this connan performance I strongly suggest you click onto the official video and view the video while seeing the close ups of his faces expressions while bringing his power to the surface ...you won't be ready folks
He had a really heavy cold when he sang this live! Such is the quality of his voice. He was a cantor in his synagogue which is what he’s so controlled.
Disturbed is the band, David is brilliant. He was ill that night, quite ill but he wasn't going to step down. His brother is married to my daughter. I simply love those two men. They are as sweet as sweet can be. Bless them, I absolutely adore David and his brother, who is my beloved son-in-law. Thank you for the kind words.
DISTURBED is a Heavy Metal Band, but they do AWESOME Covers, of great song. Just like this song. "Down with the Sickness" is a popular song by them, and that, is their "Norm". Great Post.
This performance had Disturbed plus 15 other musicians to make the orchestra. This has been viewed over 100 million times. I suggest you watch the studio version which has an excellent video but is not as large of an orchestra. You might be interested in their "Hold on to Memories".
David Draiman was trained to be a cantor coming from a long line of cantors. He wasn't feeling well when he sang this on Conan's show. Paul Simon said that this is his favourite cover of his iconic song that he wrote when he was 21. Paul said that his version was a warning to us what would happen. David's version is what has happened as we didn't heed the original warnings.
Listen to Down With The Sickness. Another one of their immense hits that will give you more insight into the depth and artistry that this band possesses, and how David is able to effortlessly send chills down your spine with his vocals. 😁

David had the flu this might with 103 fever. Sitting be ause he wasnt sure he could stand. This is an experience...goosebumps and tears. So incredible. At 77 i listen to this a few times a day for inspiration and to calm both. David was asked did he sing like an angel or a devil. I think he responded " both" or something to thst affect. Great response by you. Go listen to it again alone. Bathe in it, experience it. If you dont feel, get goose bumps, tear up or just cry then you are souless. Davids voice crawls inside you and grabs your soul.
Sorry, David did not have the flu that night, nor was he running fever. He had a lesion on his left vocal cord. He wasn't sure till the last minute, if he would do the performance. He decided to. He had also taken 50 mg of prednisone to get the throat swelling down & his ENT was on call.

The best cover of any song ever, period.
Johnny Cash, Hurt... I don't necessarily disagree; but I'd say they are at a similar level in very different ways.
Saw disturbed in concert here in st.louis in 2019 and they did it live. Amazing
Me too!
He had really bad flu when he sang this which made it even more incredible, and you can hear two bits of auto tune. David went mental when he got backstage because it was used without his consent
They had him sitting because they thought he wouldn’t be able to stand he was so ill.
NO...HE FELT GOOD. HE WAS JUST HIGH. DID A RUN 🏃♂️ LATER.
I saw them in concert for the first time in 2002 not long after their debut album, it's a train I never intend to get off of. The original singers have come out and said it's Disturbed song now.
He's classically trained and had the flu the night he did this. Disturbed is definitely a heavy metal band
@@odomisan David did not approve the auto-tune.
Reports say he was pissed
He was actually originally trained to be a jewish cantor
@@odomisan Nope, I hate auto-tune. Perform live, warts and all, that's what we come for. In fact, it goes for recordings as well.
Crap!
“Voice like velvet”, have you heard Down with the Sickness😅. I love his voice and all of Disturbed’ work. Fabulous band. ❤
Love disturbed, David Draeman writes all their music and no matter how heavy it is the messages in the songs are brilliant. Simon and Garfunkel are legends, one track they made is called silent night/7 oclock news well worth a listen
Given that the original is a classic I always felt bad that I disliked the original..can’t get enough of this version because of the power in his vocals💜
love Disturbed.. love the cover they did.....but LIVE amazing
I’ve never heard this song, I loved it and your reaction! It’s very powerful and I downloaded it and listened over and over on my way home.
On another note, I LOVED y’all’s reaction to Best of South Park part one…”I’m just a little girl, a dainty little thing, and I know you all want to be, a little white girl like me.”
I’ve never seen Sophie laugh so hard!
Thanks Ross! 👍🏻 glad you’re enjoying the journey
never heard this song before ? or did you mean disturbeds cover ?
if yes to never heard the song at all, i have 1 questions for you !
1) did you grow up at a place without radio and tv and at the same time were born under a rock ?
@@jalliboy, I’ve never heard this version. Are you a RUclips troll or is it just characteristic flaws you possess? Thanks for the response. Enjoy your evening! 🎉😊
@@jrbaytown we all have flaws, an a troll i am not. I know that there are people who has never ever heard the original even tho they live in area where tings like knowing that song is common!
He was so incredible in this song despite being sick as heck during it.
I love Disturbed down with the sickness would be a good one to do too or a Godsmack "scars" react. the sully erna vs shannon larkins drum battle would be cool too. ~Cheers
Love Disturbed! Saw them live at Pine Kob amphitheater Michigan!!!!
The heavier metal version is better in my opinion
A voice like velvet, a velvet cheese grater. 😂😂
Thank you 😂 her description cracked me up!!
This was a big surprise because Disturbed is a heavy metal band and this song wasn't really what people expected
Incredible song.
It was so interesting to hear from other guys posts on here that he had the flu while singing this on Conan. I can tell a difference in his voice from the one I got on my iPhone. He sounds even better on this video. If that’s not talent, I don’t know what the hell is?!
I love listening to him sing. Lucky enough to hear him in person from the front row
Disturbed is so versatile its just amazing! Now that you have heard this listen to Down with the sickness and then Hold on the memories. David's voice is powerful and on point at both ends of the spectrum!
Gonna see them in July 2023🤘🤘🤘🤘my taking my grandson I've done seen them 3 time this amzing live
The hard intense rock growling singing part adds Resuppratation of current emotion from the character in th moments of the song
That tells me that this is literally the only Disturbed song she has ever heard!
uh WAH AHH AHH AAH
Saw them in concert last week and they were awesome!!!
Best version of all time! Crazy thing about it too is he was sick with the flu that night on Conan.
It's even a song he would sing.
awe, that’s a wonderful beautiful memory. Thx for sharing.
RIP to your father
❤
much love from Ontario Canada

Ah...my Dad isn't dead he's just someone I have seen in years.
The videp adds so much, you owe it to yourselves to watch. Very disturbing, creepy but effective to convey the message.
Dealing with a hard flu and fever while doing this connan performance I strongly suggest you click onto the official video and view the video while seeing the close ups of his faces expressions while bringing his power to the surface ...you won't be ready folks
Great live vocals. I prefer the Simon and Garfunkel for this song but I listened to alot of disturbed harder music growing up
Disturbed had the flu when this lead singer sang this on this show and still sounded this awesome.
Every time I hear the Sound of Silence all I can think of Neil the hippie singing it in the bathtub on the TV show The Young Ones...A classic 😜
He had a really heavy cold when he sang this live! Such is the quality of his voice. He was a cantor in his synagogue which is what he’s so controlled.
David Draiman is also a classically trained Jewish Cantor. He is also an Opera singer.
Can't wait for this one 🔥
They are a rock band. There debut album was in 2000. You should listen to more of there stuff. They are great
I love this song. At least once if every day I listen to it as I walk through the woods.
Indestructible by Disturbed is my favorite song by them, it is worth a reaction.
love that song
I always thought that would b a great song to come out to n mma
Disturbed is the band, David is brilliant. He was ill that night, quite ill but he wasn't going to step down.
His brother is married to my daughter. I simply love those two men. They are as sweet as sweet can be. Bless them, I absolutely adore David and his brother, who is my beloved son-in-law. Thank you for the kind words.
DISTURBED is a Heavy Metal Band, but they do AWESOME Covers, of great song. Just like this song. "Down with the Sickness" is a popular song by them, and that, is their "Norm". Great Post.
They are a great band to see live.
I seen & met Disturbed @ the West Palm Beach, FL 2006 OZZFEST. Packed Stadium & him & his mates were much more chill then those with Manson.
What an incredible voice
Original was done in 1964, if I remember right. Velvet? Maybe... but there's 40 grit sandpaper in there too!
I’m so happy to see mom totally pulled into this song!!
His voice is ridiculous. I've seen them live
The woman on the right might be the cutest thing I have ever seen. Great song btw!
The band of Disturbed is from Chicago, Illinois. David was a business man before the band formed.
Disturbed crushed this song! Knocked it out of the park!
This performance had Disturbed plus 15 other musicians to make the orchestra. This has been viewed over 100 million times. I suggest you watch the studio version which has an excellent video but is not as large of an orchestra.
You might be interested in their "Hold on to Memories".
When people don't get it they just don't get. You can't convince people that what they hear is good
David Draiman was trained to be a cantor coming from a long line of cantors.
Get up! Come on, get DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
In order to fully appreciate this cover you need to be familiar with the original and be familiar with Disturbed's songs
bloody hell I never watched a worse reacts vid in my life, the whole point of them is you react !!!!, honestly you lot looked so board....while listening to one of the best covers ever made. then you had look up who actually wrote the song. i'm not mad just extremely disappointed
Be sure and watch the original 2015 black and white video. Really drives the meaning of the words. Paul Simon looks bed Disturbed’s version. Told them the song now belongs to them.
Disturbed is a heavy metal band, but this is an EPIC version of a cover song
