He doesn't yell, it's part of his style! Some people just don't know talent if it hit them in their face!! This guy is the best male vocalist I've ever heard!!!
Yes David is classically trained. His father and his grandfather were Jewish cantors. David trained to carry on the tradition. Started training at age 12 and still works with a voice coach that travels with the band. I was fortunate to see them in concert last month!! My all time fave band!!
This is my favorite "version" of "Sound of Silence" mainly because David's voice follows the message and "mood" of each song line perfectly. As a result, the lyrics "move" me more powerfully and emotionally. Also, Anastasia, I loved your analysis, great details and the way you freely expressed yourself!!
One of the best voice reactions I've seen. You go into so much detail about what he's doing, it's great! He tells the story that Simon and Garfunkel wrote so amazingly.
I'm quite certain a lot of people weren't aware he was capable of singing like this before Disturbed dropped this cover, but their songs "Remember" & "Darkness" from their Believe album show how he can flex his vocals.
A saw a interview with David about the recording of S.O.S, it took him a shitload of tries to figure it out, but when he got it the band was completely stunned and almost crying. 🙂
I remember hearing this on the radio for the first time coming home from work. I was super impressed by it. I was stunned to find out it was Disturbed that recorded it, being familiar with them already and knowing their hard-rocking style and grungy vocals. David is the man!
Yeah you’re probably right. I saw Disturbed live back when I was in high school in like 2007 and I remember he definitely sounded amazing live, basically studio quality. But it was all very aggressive singing, not like this.
Actually not even him knew could sing like that, when they decided to make this cover, and to get it done the way they wanted it to sound, he had to learn, practice and apply new ways of singing and techniques he didn’t knew, and obviously wouldn’t use before; he actually became a way better singer because of doing this cover and amplifying his knowledge and thechnics for singing.
He is classically trained Jewish Cantor. Hè was also very sick with the flu during this performance. His brother, Benjamin lives in Israel & is a ambient musician.
The fact that you were saying everyone knows down with the sickness and bring me to life but didn’t express that everyone should know Simon and Garfunkel’s Sound of Silence?
In an interview, David said he usually gets a song in 1 or 2 takes in the studio - but he said this one took around *40 takes*! He and his recording crew listened to each take and made suggestions on how to make it better, until it became the genius that we got. So I guess you could say that he did get instruction on how to sing it, but it was a group effort that brainstormed this masterpiece.
David Draiman was trained as a Cantor. Paul Simon loved this performance so much he not only wrote to Disturbed, but also promoted it on his social media. Something he has never done for a cover of one of his songs.

The thing which impresses me the most, is how anyone could listen to Simon & Garfunkel's amazing folksie original from back in the '60's and believe they could make something equally amazing (such as we've just listened to) out of it. Apparently, the first time Paul Simon heard Disturbed's version of his iconic song, he was absolutely blown away by it, and you can find no stronger validation from anyone, anywhere than that. Good reaction. I just found this song in early July, 2023. I thought it was excellent, especially their Official Video with words, pictures, and vocals.
This song was originally written by Paul Simon and performed by Simon and Garfunkel many, many years ago. It was a huge hit. The way that David and Disturbed have performed this song, gives it new meaning and makes it more sensitive. Even Paul Simon has commended him on how he adapted the song and brought out it's meaning. Love both versions.....but this is more powerful. As mentioned, he was very sick when he was on this show. You need to watch the video that was released for this song.
Most people never realized what amazing vocals David has....UNTIL they hear this song! He can sing anything, and with stunning control ! He was sitting because he had a fever of 102° and they were afraid that he would fall down if he wasn’t sitting, I can barely hear it in his voice, in his life performance, it’s there, but it’s just slightly.
Draiman's voice and emotion brings so much more to the lyrics. Astounding performance. He was indeed classically trained. A joy! Disturbed does a great cover of Genesis' "Land of Confusion"! (check out some early Genesis with Peter Gabriel. Prog at its best)

Just saying. So says Austin Tx!!!! 😍😍😍🍸😎
He was sick to his stomach the night he appeared on the Conan show and had to work hard to make it through the song. Despite his refusal they used "autotune" on his performance.
In the Dutch TV programme Beste Zangers episode 1 from the 2019 series Henk Poort sings this version to Floor. Floor taught him how to growl two hours before the show. He was worried that he might never get employed as an opera singer again once people had heard him growl.
David was trained classically, including opera. He would fill in occasionally at synagogues as a cantor. He was not trained as a cantor. He does a great performance live on Conan. He was sick with over 102 temperature but pulled off a great performance anyway. The show production added some auto tune but he didn’t find out later after the performance. He was pissed. He likes vocals raw without much post production; you can tell because you can hear the mouth noises and occasionally his breathing.
Listen to The Light, No More, Hold Onto the Memories which is a ballad also. And listen to A Reason to Fight. All so good. I pre-ordered their new album. Came out on Nov 14. Can't wait till it arrives!

Let’s not forget David was sick, a cold I believe, for this performance. One of the most powerful versions of a song I know
102 temp and the flu!!!!!
he had been hospitalized the night before, hence sitting still on a stool.
In the Dutch TV programme Beste Zangers episode 1 from the 2019 series Henk Poort sings this version to Floor. Floor taught him how to growl two hours before the show. He was worried that he might never get employed as an opera singer again once people had heard him growl.
I think Henk's version are at least as good as Disturbed's - at least!!

They didn't add "some" Auto-tune - it's all Auto-tuned. The original is Auto-tuned as well, so his being "sick" had nothing to do with it.
Listen to The Light, No More, Hold Onto the Memories which is a ballad also. And listen to A Reason to Fight. All so good. I pre-ordered their new album. Came out on Nov 14. Can't wait till it arrives!
Paul Simon saw this performance on TV that night. He broke down crying. He added the link to the official video onto his personal web page.
Paul Simon wasn't bad, but music has evolved so much since the original. I'm happy to hear he appreciates this.
David was a Cantor in his family's Jewish church. That's the training you're hearing.
It grabs me every single time I hear it 💖
Great song, great cover, great reaction and great voice….Congratulations!
@Anastasia Luna he had a vocal coach since young age, his latest (long term) coach is one of the most renowned in the world, just do a search.
Anastasia Luna, I just subscribed to your channel. I am delighted to see your depth of your analysis of the performers, in this case Disturbed.
Thank you for helping us learn more about voice!
David was trained to be a cantor for his Jewish community. I love the sickness type stuff, but the guy can sing anything. Finally saw Disturbed live, and he was recovering from pneumonia...Great show.🤘🤘🤘✌
My suggestion is to watch the official video for The Light by Disturbed. The story of the song will melt you. He is truly amazing no matter how he is using his voice.
You should really check their official video of this.. he was actually not feeling well the night he did this show. I believe you would like it even more.
The official music video for this cover is awesome as well. The visuals add another layer.
Perfect. Yep, that’ll do it.
I would recommend A Reason to Fight and Hold onto Memories by Disturbed , both songs aren't your typical Disturbed song.
