So two seasons ago, I had a massive issue with grubs across 15,000 square feet of lawn. They destroyed my lawn. At least a dozen per square foot, sometimes more. I used a corrective that fall, then used Merit the following late spring. Every other yard in my neighborhood experienced the crazy grub kill besides mine last year. This stuff works.
Hey there! Ok...it was a productive weekend. I mowed the Bermuda short, spread 20 bags of topsoil to get a light coating and level the low spots and fill in some holes in the Bermuda, along with some peat moss. Applied starter fertilizer,. After that, the slicer seeder came out and overseeded the lawn. Here in Texas, the weather is already warm, so I should see results fairly quickly. My biggest concern here in west Texas will be the rainfall. Thanks for the tips! Going to try and DOMINATE this year.
good video, we use merit (imidacloprid) & bouncer (bifenthrin), both together in 1 sprayer unit to get all insects above ground (beetles, armyworms etc) and below ground (curl grub, you call these white grub).
Hey Allyn, thank you so much for this video. I’m out in SoCal and had my back lawn re-sodded 3 years ago this coming October. The idiot that did it laid down the Spectracide which of course did nothing to the grubs that were there but unknown to me. Each Fall I suffered damage and thought it was faulty sprinklers. Nope. European Chafers. I found some great research by MSU where they specifically call out the Spectracide as not being effective for killing grubs at all. Many insecticides aren’t allowed here but the Bayer Advanced is. I’ve repaired my damage and stocked up on the Bayer Advantage. I have you to thank for my victory over the grubs!
The plant you were pruning was a Cordyline, commonly known as a Red Sister Ti Plant. Yours has a lot of nice canes on it, but if it every gets too leggy for your taste, cut about a 1/3 of the canes to about the height you want new leaves to form, and it will fill out. You can even keep the canes you cut (with the top leaves attached) in moist soil and they will root.
Very well done video. I just installed a new lawn two days ago and while fixing a sprinkler heard this morning I found a grub. I know it had to come for them new sod because I only had dirt as a front lawn for the past three months. Thanks for the video.. I have a better understanding on which product I should use.
I had a pretty bad grub worm infestation this summer and took your advice and tried this stuff. A week or two later I was still finding grubs but it's been at least 3 or 4 weeks now since I've seen any. So it either worked after a few weeks or the grubs are in a phase where they are deeper in the soil. Either way, thanks and I love your videos!
We switched to Milky Spore 12 years ago and have had no problem. Lasts about 10 years and doesn't harm anything other than the grubs. I also use Bayer 12 month Protect and Feed on our trees (the liquid is easier to put down than the granulated). What this does is kills any Japanese beetle that bites the leaf and it appear to repel them as well. These 2 products working together result in total annihilation of damage caused by grubs and Japanese beetles. PS: Milky Spore can be put down any time of year as long as the ground is not frozen. It's a one time application that only needs to be repeated about every 10 years.
Maybe this warrants some further discussion... I could be wrong, but I recall reading some research (maybe from University of Minnesota) that discussed the timing of imidacloprid. From that reading, I thought the reason the preventative application needed to go down sometime in May was so that 1) the chemical had time to move through the soil to the optimal depth to be in place when the grubs were still young and most susceptible during their migration up towards the grass roots. Rationale being that the full grown adult grub would need a significantly higher dose to be killed. Also, and again I could be wrong, but I've read articles stating that you should actually wait until you see adult beetles flying at night before putting down the imidacloprid so that the chemical would migrate through the soil just in time to meet the hatching larvae from the adults. Thoughts?
CT Skynet This is what I thought also living in Michigan to put down grub control by July 1 so that it kills the beetles newly laid eggs for next year? This was told by the Flowerland expert here.
I'm going to switch up my grub control this year and try the dominion. My question is can I put multiple applications of this stuff down in a season. I slacked off last year and I think the grubs got a little more widespread in my lawn as a result. In the past I've done just a June application of grubbex but am trying to branch out from Scotts products.
So Allen , I d ok currently have a lawn service (heron) that treatrs my lawn would it hurt or would your or not to recommend to put down the bare as a little extra precaution...?or is it not a good idea.... and would I do the milorganit too....
I wait for June 1st. Then I use a dylox double treatment. The only one that kills sugarcane grubs. Arena does also , but it does not work for sod webworms. After that, I use bifenthrin and imidacloprid the rest of the season. Brevard, Florida
I applied a product called GrubEx on my TF lawn first week of May (2 weeks ago). I live in SE VA. Should I throw down another application here in a couple weeks or should I be fine? Thanks!
Thanks for the great video...If you have never had a problem with grubs is it necessary to use a preventative? Is it a bad idea to add chemicals to the lawn if not needed?
when will the personal patron account a month be available again? it says it's sold out. I could use some advise on what I have going on. just bought a house that has been sitting for years without maintenance. I've got it pretty good but it won't seem to get better. I would like some advise. if you could help it would be appreciated.
Tried out nitrolime to get rid of leatherjacket larvea, but should also work on grubs. Should give a good feed, lime, pre emergent herbicide control, grubcontrol, and it is dirt cheap. Never hear about nitrolime on the youtubes. Is it illegal in the US for use on residential laws?
Awesome. I was just searching TLCN channel last week to see if you had any updated grub worm videos and here it is. I have one question related to grub worms: If moles are becoming a problem, does that indicate that grub are present and will treating the grub problem help with the moles problem?
I just saw where this was answered further down in the comments, "Getting rid of grubs won't get rid of moles - they mainly eat earthworms but will opportunistically snack on grubs. Best, most eco-friendly way to get rid of moles is with a good hunting dog."
I'm up north (MA) and applied Grubex on April 24th as the weather was so warm....let me know if I can apply another product or Grubex again. I think you recommended Bayer?
Are there any issues with applying the grub preventative twice a year (i.e. early May and again in July) if the weather is warm early? We have warmer than average weather in Wisconsin and the grass/weeds seem to be a few weeks ahead of normal. Would doing a double application insure that the chemical is in the right place when the grubs are there? Thanks.
Great video LCN!!!! I have a ? off topic. I live in TX and have Bermuda grass and am currently dealing with seed stalks. Exactly what is it and can it benefit my lawn?
I see you have grubex in the drop box, so yours or anyone’s opinion which one would you recommend more Grubex/Bayer Advance Insect killer/ Bayer All Season Control? And just for this newbie the higher percentage of imidacloprid, the better? Is a smaller percentage or very small amount of chlorantraniliprole as in Grubex going to be truly effective?
would you do me a solid and give some advice on getting rid of moles/voles? they've moved into my lawn, when I cut I'm seeing damage, and a system of tunnels. SOS
I know that you were looking to hear from him but just so you know, he metioned voles briefly in another video and he basically said that he prefers to go into the ground, find their nests and use "mechanical means" rather than "chemical means"...Whatever that means *shrug*
What a great timing for this video! Here in Central Nebraka at this time of year, even thought the lawn is growing great, signs of Sod web worms are appearing. Also while digging in garden they are found along with grubs so I just put down the Bayer Advanced plus and watered in. My product contains Dylox with differs from the one you show in the video. Is there any pros or cons to my Dylox??
@theLawnCareNut I live in Central East alabama near georgia line. My soil is hard packed clay. I have a beautiful green Bermuda, with the hard soil could i still have grubs?
Very helpful video! Do you normally put down an application every year, or do you only apply it when you know you have insect issues? Keep the videos coming!
up north I never applied a pre-emergent - my lawn was vigorous enough to out-grow any issues. Here I am going to do a preventive this year as my neighbors have told me there were some problems nearby last year with grubs.
Thanks for this video. When it come to lawn fert lately it's with a doubt Milorganite. So when it comes to pest control I am so lost. You made some realy good points here like the ant control. I need my Milorganite of pest control. Sounds like that Bayer Advanced will be the way to go for me up north.

Hi Alan. I was under the impression that insecticides can also kill microorganisms in your soil, disrupting the organic soil activity and reducing effectiveness of organic fertilizing, etc. Is that true?
Getting rid of grubs won't get rid of moles - they mainly eat earthworms but will opportunistically snack on grubs. Best, most eco-friendly way to get rid of moles is with a good hunting dog.
Once you get rid of the moles voles will use their tunnels to get into your yard and flower beds... those are the ones to worry about for lawns and flower beds. Had a few last year. Mouse traps with peanut butter took care of that problem.

The blade change portion is great. My favorite line at the big box, "that can not be a replacement edger blade, it is too long."

cool. if your allowed merit turf. Schafer beetle swarms in the dry heat here and plant larvae in sandy soil
Grass Daddy ahhh yes, I swapped the two chemicals when I was thinking about this. Thanks for the correction. Luckily I put down the correct treatment.
great videos - off topic question, what's the best way to kill off Bermuda grass?
diesel fuel and a match

can anyone explain how to get rid of moles by removing grubs? any tips?
Getting rid of grubs won't get rid of moles - they mainly eat earthworms but will opportunistically snack on grubs. Best, most eco-friendly way to get rid of moles is with a good hunting dog.
Once you get rid of the moles voles will use their tunnels to get into your yard and flower beds... those are the ones to worry about for lawns and flower beds. Had a few last year. Mouse traps with peanut butter took care of that problem.
