When I use neem oil and castile soap treatments, I put my solution in a quart of warm water, first, shake it just enough to emulsify, then pour it in the jug or sprayer. I just find it helps keep the oil better dispersed that way.

I commented on another neem oil video before seeing this. A soil drench is exactly what I think I need to take care of my grub problem. Maybe my cabbage and squash will be safe this year! Thank you again for this great videos.
Hi did you do this soil drench method? If yes how did it work? I have a major grub infestation in my raised beds. I'm literally pulling hundreds out by hand and I am worn out. Thanks.
I'm using neem seed meal for certain plants to help protect them from insects. I'm already using it with my onions (gnats, aphids) and plan to use some with my squash and brassicas this year. 👍🏾👍🏾

Gary Thank you so much for this video. I have been fighting with grub worms in my garden and lost almost everything. I sifted through the soil in all of my raised beds and picked out every grubworm I could find. I treated the soil with peroxide yesterday. This is going to be my next step before planting any of my fall veggies. I was at my wits end with the grubs. Thank you for this video. It is so encouraging.

Just came back to rewatch the ratios for your drench. I am going to try this for root knot nematodes. I believe they came in on a start of chocolate mint I bought. :( Will net the elevated bed too. Our plantings start in Fall now so since they hate the brassica family, I will probably use the whole elevated bed for radishes and maybe broccoli and mustard. Another gardener I spoke to said they leave the mustard roots within the soil to help kill them too. Here is to hoping it works.🙏🏼

I love this time of year, and Gary's voice is part of my prep for our 7 beds. I know it's time to get all the seed starts ready, and I've used his advice for years...with great success. The castille soap I use is Dr. Bronner's, and I always buy the one with Peppermint oil already in it. It's actually a pleasant mix and has been really effective in keeping invaders away. Thanks, Gary, you make gardening success easy!

I'm in San Diego so all my new baby transplants were just put in the ground. So I assume it's too late to do a drench? Or can I do it around the transplants?
So... if you dont soak the leave its okay but leaf contact at this ratios will harm the leaves. The drench in the soil shouldn't be an issue but I have used it when the plants were more mature. In place of just water, I use neem oil, sometimes mosquito bit tea and soap mixture once a week for three weeks if I notice any fungus gnats in my grow room. Repeat as necessary. I have the sticky traps hung on each shelf. See? I just started following, and I think I’ll try the boiling water trick. It might save me some time, because if you have a grow room, YOU WILL get fungus gnats at some point. That is unless you are SUPER LUCKY, or the boiling water trick works.

I am thinking about trying this. My first year gardening last spring I had to fight the stink bugs and vine borers up until June/July. I don't want to damage my soil but if the bugs were that bad my first year I hate to see what they will be like this year.
I'm having such an awful fungus gnat problem in my grow tent after bringing Colocasia bulbs out of dormancy. I've tried everything now I'm going to go mix this up and water everything hoping it will kill the larvae once and for all.
Drench them now and in like 5 days again. Try and cut off their life cycle. High recommend neem cake(seed powder) too! I mix it into my soil at around 1% volume. It has a little benefit as an NPK fertiliser but its true benefits is in the micronutrient profile and pest prevention. As it decays, neem cake breaks down into bioavailable calcium, magnesium, sulfur, etc. Great for filling in gaps that other fertilising regimes might miss. It also reduces root knot nematode impact by a huge amount, like 80%! It stresses and kills some soil pupating bugs eg Thrips pupa and beetle grubs(unfortunately it does not kill the adults, so it’s not a comprehensive treatment). My plants LOVE it. The only downside is the faint damp garlic smell, and the fact that as it breaks down it will be a bonanza for fungus gnats. That’s not an issue with established/outdoor plants, but gnats may cause issues with seedlings or indoor plants. Nothing more maddening than an indoor/greenhouse fungus gnat issue(ask me how I know 😅)

Thanks for the video! I'm prepping my grow bags for transplants and found a lot of grubs. I pulled most out, but want to make sure the eggs are killed. I am a huge fan of yours. Learn so much from you. I had horrible redberry mites on my blackberries last year. Should I use this mixture to soak the soil in the pot containing the blackberries. I want to try and prevent an infestation occuring again!
I think it could help. I just can say on what insect as I dont know the life cycles but it does work on mites. I am not trying to sell you but I sell peppermint oil and use the spray on my cucumbers. It really made a difference on spider mites. I would also just try peppermint oil spray on the surface and on leaves routinely when before they show up and during they period they hang aound. If I had to pick one, I would go with the pepper mint oil spray regularly. Gary, I have a real problem with grubs, a real problem. I think they came in in some cow manure compost I brought in last year since I never saw one last year. I need to drench most of my garden. I should be able to spray this mixture on the ground around all my plants right? I sprayed with neem a few weeks ago and let it hit the ground heavy around all the plants. It seemed to work, so at least it helped the cut worm problem. I stopped losing little corn plants immediately. I would love to knock all those little buggers out before I get completely out of control.
So all my container and. beds are filled with grubs. That is how it is in Maryland. Many are Japanese beetles. They dont harm the plants. You can do a drench. I have a video on it. Search Neem Drench. However many grabs are harmless. Cut worms are different. SO if you think they grubs grow bad guys, a drench can help. Hi Gary I just found this video. I just pulled out ALL my pachysandra because it was infested with scale. I also have had multiple infestations with whiteflies on my shrubs and planters this summer. I have sprayed with neem oil/soap and water, I have sprayed with just the hose and I also purchased ladybugs and Encarsia Formosa parasitic wasps to help me fight. Can I do this soil soak on soil that already has shrubs in it (boxwoods)? Would I wait until spring to get any whiteflies that may have overwintered? I’m so overwhelmed by these pests.
I got them off greenhouse megastore I believe but I dont recall Please visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden shop for your fabric pots, fall & spring seeds, seed starting supplies, peppermint oil, neem oil, TRG merchandise and more at www.therustedgarden.com Check out my new gardening PODCAST Gardening Coast2Coast at gardeningcoast2coast.net with CaliKim. I just dont know about the jumping worms. I dont know how neem would effect them. It can kill nematodes. I just can say for sure what it works on 100%. It effects eggs, small larva and insects that ingest it. Hey Gary! Love your channel and bought your book! Another RUclipsr was taking about using neem cake or meal instead of oil? They said it was gentler on plants. Thoughts?!
Thanks for the books support. The cake is pressed leaves. SO it doesnt have as much oil in it. Plus it makes a better fertilizer. Can this neem oil soil drench be used to sterilize potting mix which is going to be reused? If so, would I need to add fertilizer to replenish any NPK that was adversely affected by the neem oil? Thank you.

Thankyou Gary for all the info you give to us gardeners. Your greatly appreciated. My question today is about my seedlings under the shop lights of 4200L, 5000K. The seedling mix is peat, perlite. My 3” spinach just went to seed and last year my peppers all set flowers in their early stage. The room is not hot, the fertilizer 5-1-1 1/4 strength was given only once to the spinach. I can not figure out why this is happening and I’m stressed over this. I understand that for you to try and give me an answer is difficult when you can only go by what I am telling you. Would it be my lights? Though not every vegetable set flowers. I grew over 30 pepper seedlings last season and everyone of them set flowers before i even got them outside. I want to sow my seeds ASAP but after seeing the spinach doing this I’m worried about everything doing this. Any info would be greatly appreciated. 🙏
Its the warmth of the roots for cool crops that sometimes makes them bolt early indoors. Peppers I am not sure. Mine flower but not until like 10 weeks or so if inside. Cool crops are sometimes best germinated indoors and then set outside during the no freezing days and brought in at night. It slows their bolting down. When i took out a 🍅 plant that was done. It had a basil plant planted in there. There were sooo many ants & white tiny balls near them. Maybe eggs? I had mulch over this. I also saw 1 hornworm & some long body bug with many legs. Do you recommend this for all these bugs. I DID NOT have any problem with growing the 🍅/basil. Got lots of 🍅. due to the heat (it gets to 80 degrees + almost every day) I had gave up on neem spray on the leaves, but I just watch a video on using neem as a soil drench (is it systemic?) to kill bugs all year long in the whole plant?

Will this work for Lear miners as well. I believe my daughter has them attacking her Kajari plants and if this could reduce her chances of having the same trouble next year I’m sure she would be interested. Also once she removes the leaves that are seriously damaged this year is there something she could treat her plants with. I’m sure she’ll be looking up the information on treating the soil while plants are still in it as well.

Thanks for the great advice about the soil drench. I have used neem oil previously as a spray on my plants and always end up with a bunch of sludge that floats at the top of my watering can. I have tried mixing the soap and oil in a milk jug with warm water and shaking it up then adding it to my watering can but it always seems to get the sludge no matter how much I shake it up. Any suggestions? More soap maybe?
More soap is about all that works. You can test if it's enough soap by adding a drop of neem into the water. If it turns a cloudy white/yellow colour on impact, it's properly emulsified, then you can add more neem until it's the right amount for the watering can. If the balance is off, just add more soap until it's properly cloudy. It won't hurt the plants either, so long as they're not carnivorous.
You’ve mentioned hardening off plants from the sun. Do we also need to harden off based on temperatures too? I have springs plants growing indoors around 65 degrees but the nights can get down to 35 degrees. Is the sun the only shock to a plant not temperature?

I've discovered your channel a couple months ago and have already applied your very practical, easy to follow advice, as well as looking forward to using more tips. Last summer earwigs devastated my garden. Will this neem oil drench work on earwigs?
Some one asked that. I dont know their life cycle. If the oils gets on their eggs or larva is feeding in the soil, it should but I just dont know. Hi Laura, I feel your pain with earwigs. When we bought our current home, it came with a tremendous earwig infestation both in the house and out in the yard. We had to get an exterminator for the house. For the yard, we mowed and raked, disposed of hiding places, etc, but they still came after the seedlings we planted. Had to resort to spreading a product over the yard that addresses ants, earwigs, and other unpleasant pests. I now do this every year - one application. It keeps the earwigs to manageable levels. Now I can grow lettuce, spinach, and even radishes is relative peace. (They used to swarm my radish seedlings at night - I went out and looked; it was literally a swarm!) I had to dust the swarm, but more showed up each night, which is why we ended up treating the entire yard. Not ideal, but now one light treatment is effective for the year.
The worms I have are inside a potted plant. When I water it I water till it runs out the bottom. After adding worm castings several weeks ago I now have about 10 or so worms coming out the bottom drain hole and sliming their way across my floor. They die within about 5ft of the pot and it really only bothers me because of their gross trails I have to keep mopping. Any recommendations on how to get rid of them? I can repot but worry their are eggs in the roots and I will not be able to get them all out. The worms are anywhere from 2 to almost 5 inches when stretching out. They're black on top and dark grey underneath. They flip and jump like crazy if you poke at them. They also do something I dont think ive seen a worm do before but i could be wrong. They lift up the upper half of their body to blindly search the air for...somewhere to go I guess. Its weird. P.S. I just put some s.f. nematode beads on top to kill my fungus gnat larvae. Maybe it will go after the worms lol.

When I use neem oil and castile soap treatments, I put my solution in a quart of warm water, first, shake it just enough to emulsify, then pour it in the jug or sprayer. I just find it helps keep the oil better dispersed that way.

Did you ever post a video about how to apply after you plants growing?
I use Dawn mixed with water that is it spray every evening for one week. Hopefully it works
I havent used neem cake, same stuff, yet. I am looking into it.

Gary Thank you so much for this video. I have been fighting with grub worms in my garden and lost almost everything. I sifted through the soil in all of my raised beds and picked out every grubworm I could find. I treated the soil with peroxide yesterday.
Thanks will try this spring before planting along with slug bait. Thanks!

I have a question Gary . Im curious how it will kill grubs and not worms they seem similar in that they are both soft body. Thank you
I'm in San Diego so all my new baby transplants were just put in the ground. So I assume it's too late to do a drench? Or can I do it around the transplants?
So... if you dont soak the leave its okay but leaf contact at this ratios will harm the leaves. The drench in the soil shouldn't be an issue but I have used it when the plants were more mature. Not with fresh transplants.

Great preventative action.

Nothing more maddening than an indoor/greenhouse fungus gnat issue(ask me how I know 😅)
Thanks for the tips.

How long does it take for this to take effect on the grubs… I have a really bad infestation

Thanks for the great advice, as always. Do you have a resource for the ag fabric you use to cover your beds of kale? Thanks!

I guess in theory it might control some ground insects but not sure how it would help leaves.

Will this also work with Root.knot nematodes?
You’ve mentioned hardening off plants from the sun. Do we also need to harden off based on temperatures too? I have springs plants growing indoors around 65 degrees but the nights can get down to 35 degrees. Is the sun the only shock to a plant not temperature?
They need to acclamate to the colder temperatures as well.
Yea wind, cold, and sun

No ideas for worms. But it sounds like healthy soil.

On a side note, when are you planting out your kale? I’m in PA zone 7A, and looking at the temps I already planted some that I started inside.
They are going out this week

Thanks Gary!
I had a rough time with squash bugs on my zooks last year. Do you think it would be worth giving this a try in that spot to nab any that are overwintering under the soil?
I had the same thought. Living in the south, my squash get hit every year. -Debbie
It is worth it for sure. Prevention is always good. Dust on stems works too to help.

Thank was wondering the same thing. I think I might give it a try.
Is that going to kill root knot nematodes too?
It is possible, this can effect any insect or parts of soil life.

Will this kill fungus gnats? I have a serious problem in my greenhouse with them... aphids too
Yep. Well at least greatly reduce them. You probably dont need this concentration but try out different mix ratios

Gary, will the drench kill vine borer eggs? thanks
In theory but they are actually laid by a moth I believe. I am not sure of their life cycle.

I mix it using a drill and paint mixer
That works
Can it be done in live plants
It can in theory. I did it with onions. But I havent used it extensively with ground plants.

This was really useful Gary - thank you. Last year my poor old asparagus were attacked by a beetle and I'm pretty sure the eggs will be lying dormant at the moment - would it be okay to use this on the bed before the asparagus reappears?
In theory yes. You probably dont need it as strong as I showed here for that.
