Hey there, fellow Canuck. I actually formulate my own skincare (I don’t sell but I’ve been for formulating for myself and friends for many years) and I get my Neem from Botanic Planet which is a cosmetics ingredient supplier in Brampton, Ontario. I think it fits the bill (I believe it’s cold-pressed). It’s the only Canadian supplier I’ve ever been able to find. Anyway, just FYI if you’re interested!

So, azadirachtin (the active ingredient in Neem) is supposedly translaminar, and can be extracted from the oil to varying degrees, as in the pesticides Azamax and Azapro. The problem is that, unless you are using those two tested formulations, you cannot guarantee the concentration of the active ingredient in Neem oil, and the cold pressed stuff just gives you a higher chance of it actually being present at a useful concentration. You're right that the active ingredient and the several others that are present in the oil itself basically make the plant taste bad (primary antifeedant), but also if they ingest it has toxic effects on the gut, meaning they eventually starve because they can no longer process food (secondary antifeedant). The bugs avoid the taste because it will kill them. The key is whether that happens before they lay eggs. Then the use of the soil drench becomes apparent because it basically affects the bond between their old and new exoskeletons and makes them molt too early. While it's not a great broad spectrum pesticide, it is one that is effective against spider mites and is safe enough for mammals to use around your kids and pets, though it doesn't smell great. I disagree with the preventative use, and I find that the key to using it as an insecticide is to make sure you are using it repeatedly through several lifecycles of spidermites (basically once or twice a week for a couple weeks). Once the spider mite battle is won, you can repopulate your soil microbes.

I was able to get 100% pure and organic cold pressed neem oil shipped to Canada but it must specify a usage that is not pesticide related. The product I bought from Oreola Naturals indicated that it’s for face, hair and skin. I have been using a mix of neem oil, rubbing alcohol and dish soap to fight a bad spider mite infestation in my hydroponic garden wall and it has been working. I see the odd egg cluster but everything else seems to be dead.

I would love to see a video on systemic pesticides. I've recently started growing hoyas and the hoya community seems to love systemics. However I'm not comfortable using them until I understand them better. For example I've read they can kill bees if they harvest pollen from the hoyas flowers. Although I keep my hoyas inside, if I moved somewhere warmer I might want to put them outside. But don't want to kill bees, sigh.

I agree with almost every word you said. In Italy we have access to neem as a product (neem oil without any way of knowing the % of active agent) and as a proper "pesticide" (product such as Neemazal or similar, with guaranteed 1% azadiractina A) so in the first case you will NEVER known what you are using exactly and in the second you need to be a registered user to buy (it's regulated like other pesticides), not just an amateur gardener.
Anyway, there are just two things that I would like to add:
1) Neem OIL it's not useless by itself. In the worst case scenario it will work just as an agricultural oil of sort, problem is you are paying it more :D.
2) pH is very important to consider also for the water solution you're using to apply: alkaline pH destroys any azadiractina presents, so NEVER mix up neem with other product (soaps, limewater or whater) with an above neutral pH and if possible use rainwater for drench application.

Anyway, mine is not an anecdotal claim, I based my advice on different papers pointing to the fact that Aza degrade faster in mildly alkaline (and above) pH, while being more stable in mildly acidic.

from Neem tree - Veena Veera Pereira, Devendra Kumar, Manju Agiwal and TG Prasad"
Or "Stability of the natural insecticide azadirachtin in aqueous and organic solvents".
There are more work about this, but it become impractical not being able to link to them.
Best advice reamin not mixing Aza or Neem oil with horticultural soap solution or any alkaline acqueous solution, because you probably waste money.
If you have any evidence on the contrary, I am happy to read it and change my mind.
Hi! I'm from Canada. I was able to get 100% cold pressed Neem oil from Amazon. No shipping issues, came right in! Also... LOVE this video by the way. Thank you for explaining the ineffectiveness of foliar feeding. I had no idea about this and have apparently wasted A LOT of time!!! hahaha cheers and happy planting

Same! In Ontario and got cold pressed neem oil threw Amazon. Pricey but I t saved my trees last summer from the caterpillars.

Hey gardening in canada, you will likely never see this comment but I really enjoyed this video. I grew up in a country that had neem trees growing EVERYWHERE and as a child, I LOVED climbing trees. Actually I still do haha but now I live in the US and the trees here aren't that great for climbing. I remember quite well how dreadful neem leaves and berries tasted. I remember being very surprised to hear that the nasty tasting trees that I loved to climb actually had very useful qualities! Thanks for the video.

I'm very happy to have found your videos. I am in upstate NY and have access to Neem Oil but unfortunately last year I bought an organic garden product which only contains an extract of Neem and a very small percentage, not very effective at deterring pests. I am a soap maker as well as a gardener and discovered through my soap making research how beneficial cold pressed Neem Oil is for skin care and skin health. Azadirachtin has been used medicinally pre written history and is still a traditional medicinal staple. I have some cold pressed Neem Oil on the way for my garden and am planning on making some soap with it too, apparently it is great for skin issues, stinky but beneficial.

Thank you for this. I've been looking at neem products wondering if I should try them, and there's so much verbiage involved and marketing and hype it's hard to find real scientific facts about it. I have a small recurring spidermite problem that I usually just treat by hosing the plant, but lately I've been looking for other options.

I've been following your channel for a couple of months already, and I love the content of your videos.
Today, I am here, since I discovered the reason for my stressed strawberry (sweet colossus) plug plants in pots, is the infestation of some tiny, whitish, translucent wormy larvae, residing around the base of the plant's neck. I have already pushed back the well rotted farmyard manure, but since the plugs are in 16cm pots, each, the plugs are still surrounded by the larvae. Instantly, my cold pressed neem oil came to my mind but I wasn't sure if using this solution in the soil would pose a danger to the plant itself. Perhaps might burn it or something.
But, you have shared such useful information on this product. I know a little more about what I'm dealing with in terms of neem oil on plants and pest, than I did, before I watched your video.
I always feel better equipped as a gardener whenever I watch your videos. Thanks for coming up with this channel.

Thanks for answering my question on the product's effect on soil life, which is what I assumed it would be. Also, if we concentrate our effort on the pests and not the soil health, this will be a never-ending battle over "sick" plants won't it? Healthy plants = best deterrent for pests. Healthy soil = healthy plants. Also, whatever hurts pests gets into the soil and hurts the good guys trying to help us below. The other consideration for any pest deterrent would be its effect on pollinators.

I got some but all i had was aphids so the soap that you need to emulsify the neem deals with the aphids at lower concentration anyway so i only used it once on a couple test plants. Sure made the leaves look rich and fancy tho.
Absolutely STELLAR as always! I had considered spraying down the top foliage of my new plants with Neem Oil (after washing the top foliage off thoroughly outside) as a preventative treatment but many have said that iNeem can cause the leaves to be susceptible to burning. I can’t find anything definitive as to how long this potential susceptibility to burn could last. I am hoping to develop some kind of measures to prevent a new plant from potentially infesting my existing plants. I isolate them but am not sure for how long I should do so. I’ve only had Fungus Gnats and one plant with spider mites that I eradicated with isolation and Captain Jacks thus far. It’s difficult to decipher what to use that won’t destroy the soul micro biome…need more binge watching on your channel to find out 😜

I’ve had the worst time with a few neglected lucky bamboo and a calathea that have had spider mites since last year. 😭
I’ve been using food grade diatomaceous earth, DOUSING the leaves and cracks in the plant and on the surface of my calathea’s soil. 😅 It has been the easiest, most effective method for pest control. (Not to mention my dog is a flea magnet so it’s a win win)

My first micorizomes in my seeding for the first time, My favorite Gardener Lady "Growfully with Jenna " has a comparison with 3 starting mix ,adding worm casting for second mix ,additional micorizomes for 3 th mix and the third almost doubled the first mix and clearly show that it was worth the investment.

Do you have a link to a good top dresser soil addition that you mentioned? I’d like to use some on my indoor plants.
I’ve tried using Neem Oil in a foliar spray. I’ve used just Neem & Water or Neem, Soap & Water. Having reconsidered since then, it would seem that I was fighting the effectiveness of both by mixing them together. Soap breaks down oils; in the process, the soap’s strength is lessened…? That’s my thought. I made sure to purchase cold pressed Neem with the Azadirachtin included (supposedly some cold pressed products sold have removed this effective ingredient to market separately. I don’t know but that’s why I specified that A was included). I’ve seen limited effectiveness using it. The buggies may have died, but the always returned in a few short days.
I’ve a gardening acquaintance who used Neem Cake in his soil to combat harmful nematodes (the ones that cause root knot galls). He said he did see some benefit. He also however always works in worm castings. Since you are a soil specialist, do you have any data or information on that manner of application?
Your comments about Canada and Neem are correct to a point, I am in Canada and I still can get 100% pure cold pressed neem oil, the really good, pure cold pressed neem oil, you just got to know where to look.

I just applied 100% cold pressed neem to my garden after the first sighting of leaf munchers (caterpillars). New garden, new gardener, trying to stay clean but I live in the south (US) with a lot of pests. I am sitting her smelling my hands reeking of neem, not too bad, if it works. I'll know soon and will post my findings on my channel.

Please do some research and look up the importance of them, and hows theres many many other easier ways to control them. Caterpillars play vital roles in not just the food web but the ecological web as well.

I've been growing for 15 years, the best stuff that is cheap for bugs is Permethrin SFR at $35. My #1 favorite is Conserve Sc organic version. Runs about $140. No bullshit knockdown power on both.
Thanks for your video! I have an infestation of mealy bugs on my succulents and I'm so sad! I have received so much incorrect info! I treated my plants with some "neem oil" as instructed by other sources, (2 weeks in a row even though no one said to but the bottle may have mentioned it) just to have some bigger fatter juicier mealys attacking my plants😥. Another source or two later also revealed it can ruin the plant leaves. I'm not sure if its true, but it upset me. Thankfully my plants are still alive minus one loss but I'm in Texas and this summer is crazy hot so it could have done it. I'm with you! Neem oil is junk in my oppinion I've decided. Yes, please do the video on the systemic pesticide or the uptake into the actual plants by roots...whatever you mentioned. I'm a nurse, and I like all the pathology(not sure if thats the correct word for plants and dirt science). Thanks for explaining and all your hard work!

Thank you for sharing this. Is Neem the organic solution for slugs? Can you share knowledge of organic methods to prevent slugs? I have an infestation and I don't want to use Sluggo because I read in research studies that sluggo affects birds and my garden plot is in a national park. Becuase my garden plot is in a national park, I cannot 'visit' my plot at night time to 'pick' off the slugs by hand - which I know is what most organic gardeners do. Thanks for any help you can give.

What about Neem cake powder I’ve read on the description on the packaging it acts as a soil enhancer to protects the soil, produce organic acids, micro nutrients such as calcium and magnesium removing alkalinity, protects and deters soil borne pests also acts as organic fertilizers l been using it on my plants so far been doing pretty well! What are your thoughts? 😄

I’ve search on the web after pressing, the solids leftover are compacted into neem cakes and sold in either cake form or further processed into granules, powder, or added to existing fertilizers or manures.👍

I have only seen it recently sold in the Vancouver area in one florist/nursery, the containers are labeled as a product of India.
yea so you will find the odd bottle but you have too look and see what it is. most on the ones in Canada are hydrogenated. such as the one in my thumbnail

I was able to import cold pressed neem from the US (amazon), and I have also found it in certain health food or ethnic stores. But I am in a major city, well major for Canada anyway ;-) But I find the smell really off putting so I have not used it much.
So I do think that as a Canadian you could import. i was browsing Amazon and alot of them seem legit

One issue with neem oil is that a lot of neem oils being sold are not really neem oils, but they only have a small percentage of neem. Some are even pesticides with only a few % of neem but are still advertised as neem oil.
In 2019 the Oregon Department of Agriculture stopped the sale of 6 products due to pesticide contamination, some of them were well known brands.
Another thing with using neem (actually with using any oil) is to pay attention to the fact that oil and water do not mix. Even after shaking, they will be separated in the bottle. If neem hasn't worked for someone, this could be the reason why.
You need to emulsify the mixture by adding a few drops of soap. After that, they will mix :)
I have personally always had success with neem oil. I do recommend using insecticidal soaps or horticultural oils instead, but I also appreciate that sometimes, especially when you have a lot of larger plants, it can be pretty pricey buying several bottles of oils and soaps. Whereas you can buy neem in large bottles, and since you mix it with water it can last forever. I've been using one bottle for over 2 years now :)
Yesterday I went out to harvest my kale and overnight, it was covered in flea beetles! Can you tell me the best thing to use on kale for flea beetles? They're eating it up! Help?
I just bought some at the local Pakistani store. It says "natural insecticide" but doesn't say "cold pressed". I also heard that if you have pests its because your soil is unbalanced. Like aphids are a sign of a little too much nitrogen and not enough micro nutrients. So the best thing to do in that case is to add some seaweed fertilizer ? Then the pests will leave because the plants aren't calling them for help. Cheers.

Strange, every time I use neem or Karanga IPM all bugs are gone within a week. Most of the living soil cannabis growers add neem meal to the soil. I'm in Canada, and I can only find one source of neem meal, but it seems to work extremely well.

I use neem oil for spider mites. It’s the only thing that reliable gets rid of em. Though I’ve noticed it only half way works w mealy bugs. My usual is spinosad mixed w horticultural soap which is by far the best working for me. Neem has a smell but I wouldn’t say it stinks or smells good it’s just a weird smell. 🤷♀️ I use neem when I’m busy and just need to ease my mind when I have noticeable pests by quickly spraying and going.

You can get cold pressed neim oil for the hair. It should be the same.

In the states, especially, it’s like the cult of neem 🤦🏻♀️ I’ve had nurseries send me absolutely infested plants and when I inquired about it I was told to spray them with neem oil 🙄🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ with a major infestation of multiple pests, neem isn’t going to help. Azamax is a different story, but only in properly ph’d water. Personally, I’ve not found neem oil to help at all and only ended up with neem all over my bathtubs and tile walls. It also smells like rotten onions, which stinks up the whole house for 2 days. This year in particular the pests have been incredibly bad and in my area they seem to have developed a resistance to everything, which does not bode well for food crops on a larger scale. Neem oil ultimately killed my monstera standleyana albo a couple months ago due to liquid building up under the leaf sheaths despite doing my best to dry those areas out.
I’ll stick to 50:50 isopropyl:water and a tsp Castile soap per quart since I’m not one to instantly reach for a chemical pesticide (I did my undergrad in biology & ecology). I will admit that because the pest pressure has been so extreme this year with mealybugs, scale, and thrips that I did try a few chemical sprays earlier in the spring out of sheer panic at seeing some of my plants die almost overnight. I’d never lost a plant before this year and it’s such a bummer since some weren’t even salvageable for node cuttings due to disease spread by the bugs 🙁 thankfully I wasn’t growing medicinal herbs this year because that would have been a heartbreaking loss.

systemic pesticides, yes indeed. Organic pesticides don't always mean better or worse than man made, but I am sure no one wants to spread pyrethrum powder in their house or steeped rhubarb leaves for that matter and I know these are very usefull outside if done safely and correctly.

I went to my local garden center -Winnipeg area- awhile ago and asked if they sold predatory nematodes, they did not, but tried to steer me towards neem oil. The bottle had very little information on it, and I’m a skeptic, so I didn’t buy it. Wondering if it is becoming more available in Canada? (Bogus or otherwise?) I think there are better options….🧐
its likely a hydrogenated neem or a neem tea rather then a cold pressed option. you should send me a photo of the bottle. I know that the one in my thumbnail is available in Canada and it is hydrogenated.

I’ve heard systemic pesticides can make a plant that’s not toxic to pets toxic. As they can stay in the plant for a long time...? And systemic granules are not available in Canada? I’d like to hear about this myself.
@@SweetNobody I bought some off a person in a local plant group that bought some from the US and had extra. I placed a bit in my upstairs plants and really haven't had any issues until I found a couple plant with spider mites recently.
I noticed a leaf on my brasil with some browning and when I flipped the leaf over I think I may have seen a thrip. I added in some systemic and hope it wasn't a thrip 😂

Something like neem is harmless but if you’re talking about chemical options then possibly.
You have to keep in mind that these companies have to get it passed through government bodies. So the likelihood of it being toxic to a detriment is unlikely. Mostly because if someone was to use a chemical systemic pesticide in the garden outdoors and it started killing birds. That obviously would be an issue.
So systemic pesticides usually are gentle in the sun so they don’t harm a larger sized living things. But then again chemicals have got into a trophic system and didn’t damage because we ignored the signs…

I’d love a video on systemics. I’ve not used one but just bought some bonide so I’d have it when buggies get bad next summer. A few weeks of the year we have billions of little gnatty things in the air that I try to keep out but it’s inevitable that they get in. I also get fungus gnats now and again and now I understand why the neem oil didn’t work very well. Next time I’ll try insecticidal soap.

Try butt chugging or bottom watering. 😂 Out water in water dish and let it soak up for 15 minutes then take away. Bang instant fully watered and within a week no more gnats. Your welcome 😁 have a good day

I have been provided recipes using peppermint oil, liquid dishwashing soap and cold-pressed Neem oil with abundant water. Would this combination permit the neem to stay on the leaf surface to be taken in by pests?

I no spider mites laugh at it and build a immunity to it , the best thing I found was Castrol soap liquid with peppermint, and you still have to re-apply many , keeps them from getting out of control

As a citizen of the states I can testify how much neem has not worked me. Now I remember the very first comment I left u it was about powerdy mildew that I could not shake off my rose bush. Well ppl TRIED to tell me neem would fix it. Well I used neem, 400 American dollars later. I used not neem and it worked 😂 fuck neem. I will say I may be a little tipsy I LOVE UUU

I just bought neem oil (in Canada). It says “organic Neem oil”. Pure cold pressed Organic Neem oil (Azadirachta indica). Bought it off Amazon with next day delivery :). Just saying.
I tried the captain Jack's neem Max for a bed bug infestation. Big mistake! It actually attracted them, I got swarmed two days later! The worst biting episode I've had in the year plus fighting these damn demons!
I rotate neem oil, dr bronners peppermint soap, rosemary essential spray, and I have not had a single issue for years. But don't get lazy or they will find your plants!

"Uptake" is a noun. Plants don't "uptake" anything, unless you "uppick" your kids socks.
