Highly recommend soaking roots in hydrogen peroxide before repotting when dealing with root rot. I did a side-by-side comparison with two olive trees I was rehabbing. Night and day, the one that got the soak bounced back MUCH faster.
Exactly a 5 minute video is better than a 15 minute video with 10 minutes of filler. I know the algorithm prefers longer videos but I just have to move on.
Love watching these videos, using science in explaining why things are the way they are. Not based on some claims by someone or some group of people. I love science and I'm loving this channel too!

once i'm done with my mental health graduate degree and get my career going, i'm going to shift over to being a soil scientist. I absolutely love growing and even though im a novice psychology researcher and scientist, I want to learn everything about soil and growing.
Most drugstore peroxide is stabilized with AgNO3, Silver nitrate, which is rather safe. Some specialty products are now using Nano silver, but this is usually advertised as a selling point, even though in my opinion nanoparticulate silver is not a safe thing for the environment and has not been adequately investigated for it's effects on life.
The only time I use peroxide on my plants is when occasionally adding enzymes to the soil as it helps to active them... apparently.
Yea it would work for that application because it would disturb the cell walls of the enzyme. So definitely a catalyze for them.
The one thing I was torn on putting in the video because it’s so highly contested right now is the idea of seed germination. There is a theory that H202 increases germination rates.
I wanted to grow two cherry blossom trees in my front yard. Every spring I planted the trees. Every winter they died. The third spring I decided to add h202 to the trees and that was the last time I had to plant them. I guess the saying third time really was the charm😁

"It is H2O2 and unstable" nice summary of my entire empirical knowledge on the topic plus how it smells.
I have used 3% Hydrogen Peroxide diluted in a 10 to 1 ratio for many years, but only as a mild pesticide or anti fungal (Only to treat and no more than a couple applications 3 days apart). Not sure about house plants, but in outdoor Bonsai works very well.

For killing off root rot with H2O2, in the setting of taking out the roots to soak them, would you still recommend food grade or regular H2O2?
Furthermore, while we are on the topic of root rot, what is your opinion of ridding of all the soil-mix content once you find out you have root rot on your hands vs. just adding more aerating substrates (i.e perlite, coco chips, orchid bark) to the current mix to increase the oxygen content?

What comes to killing off the root rot you can use the food grade and that’s what I do recommend. There is a ton of much-needed microbes in the rhizosphere of our plants and the H2O two hydrogen peroxide is definitely going to kill off those beneficial microbes.
So when it comes to a soil having root rot in determining whether or not you should throw the soil out or simply add aeration. That added oxygen content is going to immediately kill any root rotting bacteria.
@@GardeningInCanada is there any particular amendment (I.e perlite, orchid bark, coco chips) that you would recommend to add into your current soil mixture to significantly oxygenate your soil mixtures to battle root rot in soil?

Okay….firstly….you’re friggin AWESOME, I’m super into your vibe and I deeply appreciate all of the sciencey info! I have a question I’m realllly hoping you’ll have a second to answer. I’m only a few months deep into the terrarium hobby but I’ve fallen HARD and I’m wayyyyy down in the rabbit hole. Sterilizing/sanitizing etc is a huge thing as you are dealing with a (mostly) closed system. If something gnarly starts taking off in your terrarium/vivarium etc….it’s REALLY difficult to treat. I’m doing bioactive so I also have springtails and will soon have isopods so I have to consider those lil dudes. Don’t want parasites, mold etc. SO, when introducing wild collected moss it’s difficult to decide on the best way to clean it before it goes in. Of course I do a very thorough rinse job and will quarantine the?moss for some time so I can watch and see if any mold takes over or if it becomes infest by anything which hitched a ride. I was hoping to cut down on the quarantine part of the process a bit by doing a diluted peroxide soak. After watching your videos I’m now thinking it may be more detrimental to use peroxide than to risk introduction of outside contaminants. Do you have any opinions on this? Maybe if I use food grade it will be a less shady option to use? I realize that semi closed bioactive enclosures aren’t your specialty but give your knowledge on the more scientific end of things….maybe you can throw some educated guesses at me?

Ashley, what do you think of spraying a light mist of H2O2 solution on the surface of seedling trays to prevent damping off? I tried a 4:1 dilution and I thought it helped with the damping off but I'd appreciate your scientific advice. Thank you!
yea you definately could and i would recommend it. seedlings need a sterile enviroment

Did an experiment in an opaque hydroponic reservoir.
Peroxide was effective at killing algae for the entire week.
Well, 5 days. Though it looked nasty, a white film at the bottom.
I was satisfied at the results.

Thank you, I am putting this to use today in my strawberries for some leftover fungal and aphid issues, I am soon putting all of these into a new hydroponic system, is hydrogen peroxide in small amounts in the water at the beginning of the two week cycle a benefit or more of a detraction would you say.

Well I am glad to help you out!!! There are a few elements out there that will effect the flower morphology. I’m not familiar with studies on silver but then again I’ve never actively looked either. So it is very possible.

I put colloidal silver in water rooting spider plants for fun to see if it would do anything. It kept algae away. I don’t remember if it made a difference but I remember reading that can happen.
Well what the heck now I got to try to find the study. Maybe it’ll be somewhere in the University login I’ll check it out and if it’s valid I’ll make a video on it for sure. It’s funny you didn’t see Al Jamie and it just goes back to showing how powerful of a sterilizer silver really can be.

I put peroxide on soil to kill millipede, they are so nasty. Any suggestion on how to get rid of them when they live in your soil?
you should try getting a nematode product that will take them out. but keep in mind they arent all harmful some are benefical

Yeah just do some research as to which ones you need. I know different companies sell different options. So for example the version I use which is called nemanights Has an ant formula, an indoor blanket formula, a slug formula that sort of thing
Millipedes don't normally harm your plants. They eat decaying plant matter.
Hi Ashley. I'm trying to grow cannabis plants outdoor in 30 gal pots. I was going to use a rough ratio of 4 part sterile potting mix, 4 parts compost, and 2 parts drainage/ aeration. I'm trying not to use extra perlite because it's expensive and settles on top of the soil. The alternatives I thought I had access to was grit of native rock around 2mm thick, sand, lava rock(for BBQ 2" thick), woodchips or clay pebbles. Could I use a one of the above or a mixture of some to add instead of perlite? I was looking into pumice but it seems too expensive for how much I would need.
Yea dang perlite! That’s honestly the worst thing about it! I would even try adding coco husks & wood chips(keep in mind you will have some nitrogen robbing). The lava rock will work fine, the LECA (is my personal go to… )

I don’t know what I’m doing so I use a lot of RUclips for my indoor and outdoor potted plants. When I’ve had issues with roots I would spray them wait a few minutes and then rinse with water. Chopping off dead roots before that. But with fungus gnats which is insane I’ve put a zap light in near my plants, a mixture of soap, water, sugar, and vinegar. That caught a lot. But I did use peroxide I bought at Walmart in a pray bottle on the top of the soil. A few squirts and added a small amount of water. Idk if it did much. I also poured cinnamon on the top of the soil and lightly watered. Careful not to get the leaves. Think some plants were ok with it some maybe not so much. If I think something is going on in the soil or roots I tend to get as much soil off and rinse roots and stick in water for a few days. Then decide whether or not to keep in water or make up soil and replant. I’m new to plants. I hate gnats they’re driving me nuts

I just recently heard about Food Grade H2O2 from Angela, Growing in the Garden in Arizona. She uses to repurpose planting pots, sterilizing for safe reuse unforeseeable problems; which is what I"m doing reusing donated 4' pots from a local nursery. Bought some H202 today at a Drug Emporium in Laf La.
At my age, it's been eons since I had Chemistry. Your videos are so exercising my brain re: Chemistry and I'm loving it. I was a bit concerned about regular use on the leafs killing of beneficial bacteria , but for spider mites you usually use neem oil which is also antibacterial…
Do you think food grade is essential for leaf treatment or regular would do just fine?
Because I discovered that peroxide won’t kill the spider mite eggs so a weekly treatment is needed, and I’ve been wondering if it would do harm in the long run(without getting in the soil)
you could use regular. Have you tried predatory mites?
@@GardeningInCanada yes the problem is after a while they die off and the spider mites are returning , so it became a bit expensive… I think they usually return in less than two months after😞

Neem oil has never worked for me but peroxide & natural liquid soap works excellent for me.
Do you recommend hydrogen peroxide to sterilize the soil when you bring your outdoor tropical plants indoor for winter? Same for overwintering some perennial vegetable plants like eggplants, peppers, etc.

I agree that silver is a killer, but the free oxygen ? for me it is all about the amount of free oxygen which seems all the researchers ignored. How about 15 drops of food grade Hydrogen
Peroxide per gallon of water ? just enough to make "bugs" happy but not enough to "oxidize" them to death : ) people would die from lack of some salt, but drinking two cups of salt in a gallon of water will kill us. Also, to me percolating oxygen in the soil for however short time is a very good thing in any soil.
my concern is that it gasses off. I just did a video on oxygen for plants and the uptake is via H2O not atmospheric
@@GardeningInCanada Yes, I watched that video, whether roots have no use for air is debatable in some circles ( many plants have so called air roots ), even so, "gassing off" is life giving for everything else living in the soil that needs breathing or else : smelly anaerobic mess. My favorite description of soil breathing is this : exhale - watering, filling all empty spaces with water, air out. Inhale - water out, evaporated , pumped out by roots letting air in.

Ratio of H2O2 to Water for pouring into the soil....kills fungus -root rot etc.
Then 1 Teaspoon of H2O2 to one cup of water for a foliar spray.
I often hear hydrogen peroxide recommended for hydroponics to prevent root rot. Would a food grade ratio be safe for that use? It won't hurt the roots?
yup that would work in that application.
I had wondered about this when I kept seeing it pop up in gardening groups and vlogs. It didn't seem like a good idea to put into the soil. Is it safe to assume that the stuff sold at pharmacies is NOT the food grade? (how would I know the difference?)
Yeah so the stuff in the pharmacy is not food grade. There are several different stabilizers inside of those. Most commonly is silver nitrate or nitrate I can’t quite remember.
So I didn’t include a link in the description and in the comments for a food grade option of hydrogen peroxide. Now keep in mind if it is at a grocery store it does need to state food grade on it. My understanding is that it’s not very common to see food grade hydrogen peroxide in an actual retail store. Mostly because it is not 100% shelf stable. It does have an expiry date on it which makes it less than ideal for storing in a medicine cabinet.

So checked my run off and my ppms are high. I need to run RO water to lower it I'm aware but am I better off doing it all at once or over a 2-3 waterings? I have high porosity medium 35-40% perlite in soil. Clones 4.5 weeks from rooting.
i would go with gradual especially if you have senstive plants at all
Hi Ashley, re the last point about overwatering. How would you solve an overwatered plant? I have a couple I didn’t repot from the nursery soil and it was fine. But not with 6 hours a day of barely any light the soil takes 2-3 weeks to dry out for another watering and that’s a bit concerning to me. But on the other hand I’m not keen on the idea of reporting in December to amend the soil and drainage

Thanks for your tutorial -plants bring oxygen to environments. Then How to keep indoor plants healthy without gnats and other insects? I’ve been using formula with water baking soda soap -also water with peroxide hydrogen - just making sure my new adventure of wintering plants inside the house is not causing issues - I also put some outdoor plants -wintering them- in our basement we placed a small green house - saving money 🧐 some of my plants are not easy to find anyways

How about using it for the leaves to get off sooty mold ? I’ve got a bunch of once gorgeous plants that now have sooty mold ? Will it remove the ugly black if you use food grade ? They’re declining and I’d like to help the issue. The trees above seem to cause this on the plants in the same area. I think the trees may have some sap suckers in them who poop on the plants below , causing sooty mold . Or , the trees are shedding a fungus themselves that’s spreading . I hate it either way because I have a fortune in these sempervivums. Many are collector type species. Thank you . I’d spray it gently . I just want to basically bleach off the ugly spots . I work as handyman for a family but I have to do the garden as well.
We have yew hedges and they started to die. ( 2 died fortunately on the ends of hedges not in the middle )
I read about a lot and for me it seems it was root rot.
I would like to ask your opinion bc if the issue with this the hydrogenperoxid is that it kill everything even the good stuff.
Could I save the yew from the root rot if I use hydrogenperoxid but after maybe a week I would use some microbes treatment that I can buy?
Do you think are those any good or not in this case.

Recently I use (non food grade) 3% hydrogen peroxide on some vegetable plants, after watching this I was scared that the veggies would be toxic to eat cuz of the hydrogen peroxide. Is that true?
Well crap I just bought 3%HP from the store because I’m having root rot issues in one of my plants due to too much rainfall last weekend outside on my deck but lucky I did not use HP yet. I’m about to take it back to the store. Seems pointless to use it and disappointment! Like how am I going to save my plants if the leaves crumble and looking frail. 😢

I use food grade hydrogen and thymol oil in distilled water around the base of the plant to avoid fungus and root rot. I don’t use too much. And only do it a free times a month.
And I prefer to water in small bits bc my alocasia seem to like that best. My plants like this mix.
I’m scared to use the fish emulsion in the soil for alocasia.
Store bought hydrogen peroxide does not have additives! I know this be cause I ran a department the produced/packaged hydrogen peroxide. Silver would not stabilize hydrogen peroxide. There were no additive added to hydrogen peroxide

If I remember correctly, nano silver is used in cloud seeding...so it's being distributed in our water and all over our environment.

I’m trying to figure out the best way to keep mold from hitching a ride on the moss I’ve collected for terrariums. I thought peroxide might be a good choice. I am not reconsidering that😬
Mold isn't a bad thing. it's just nutrients being cycled

Anyhow…fair enough. I guess maybe I should try seeing if my springtails and opening the lids up to air out my terrariums periodically is enough to avoid mold takeovers. I know a little bit of mold is no biggie and even feeds my springtails. I’ve just also seen mold completely take over and murder everything else in a mostly closed bioactive set up.

Thank you so much for your fact based videos which are also hilarious. I really needed that chuckly this morning. I have a cane begonia that my mom left me when she died. It has been struggling with some sort of bacterial and or fungal infection. The only thing that seems to battle that off is peroxide. But now I am not happy about using it. Can you think of any other way I could eradicate the issue please? I will spray it with a solution of peroxide and water, and it will pretty quickly send out new healthy growth, then after a couple of months the center of the leaves will start to rot (it almost looks like) again, and it spreads to the center of all the other new leaves, very sad to watch. Any help with this guy would be greatly appreciated.
In Mexico a silver, containing, liquid product is sold to make raw vegetables safe to eat
that makes sense because it is a great disinfectant

If one has a fusarium outbreak and fighting with trycaderma or enzymes and you are loosing the battle can one treat organic soil beds "indoor" then rebuild your biome? Does it make the soil toxic to microbes fungus ect....? Distressed
Oh man fusarium is such a pain! It’s toxic to microbes but if it’s bad enough you sometimes just need to rebuild from the ground up and nuke everything

Ashley, my plants have root rot from a Trader Joe’s plant that I reused the soil for cuttings. If I 1) remove the plant from the soil, treat with hydrogen peroxide + repotted in new soil 2) let the infected soil dry out + treat with hydrogen peroxide - can I then reuse the soil for another plant in the future? + Adding perlite and/or leca to increase aeration?
Hello. Adding perlite for aeration never hurts. My preferred sterilization method for potting soil is to dampen my soil all the way through and then bake it in the oven at 250F for a half hour. Kills most everything.

What do you think of using colloidal silver in your garden? I always been against it. Which goes against so of favorite garden channels.
What context are they using it in. Are they using it as a soil amendment?
@@GardeningInCanada Don't know exactly. Not a RUclipsr doing this. People in gardening chat rooms think it's a cure for all. One guy was going to water his plants with it. I talked him to do an experiment and water only haft with colloidal silver. I reach out to him latter on but he said that he abandoned his garden.
