@@Sharon-lj8kb a small microscopic worm like pest. Typical nematodes most agcalturalists think of are the ones that infect and destroy crops. However beneficial nematodes can are a few species live in non sterile soils that likes to infect grubs and other insects. They multiply inside the body of their host and kill it kinda like a zombie. Then spill out into the soil to seak out more bugs. Basically fighting nature with nature. Tried it a few years back and had little problems with bugs the whole summer. Next summer I didn't use them and my garden and lawn were attacked with vigor. Going to try them again this summer to see if it makes a difference.
Can I use the grub bgone product if I fertilized my lawn? and what about if I added new grass seeds will the grub product counteract with this or kill seedlings? Thanks
Can you mix a curative and preventative down together in spring? To immediately kill whats left in ground from last year and preventative to last til later in summer?
For years my front lawn would turn yellow in summer and I thought it was a water problem. I tried different fertilizers, more water, nothing worked. Finally I did some digging and found just a couple grubs. I put down grub poison and in two weeks the lawn was perfectly green.
I'm having the same problem, and doing research on what product would work, since they are so many in the market I'm from West coast Canada. what is the name of the one that you used ?
I feel like he is selling commercial product. He forgot to mention non-chemical, better solutions like beneficial nematode, corn meal, and milky spore. So I gave it a thumbs down, because I really don't want to use chemicals.
@tammyc5295 He did mention "Integrated Pest Management." You may have not listened toward the end. He also said if the grubs are not causing damage just leave them be.
My yard is absolutely infested with grubs and because of that I have moles tunneling to feed on them. You have educated me and provided some ideas to attack the problem. Thanks for taking the time to do this video!
I always see CROW (BLACK) BIRDS in my neighbor’s yards in the morning razing neighbor’s yards for grubs. I never see the CROWS in my but 3-4 times out of a 100 times a season, when I do see them in my yard I apply something for GRUBS because that’s the signal. I’ve been doing this for 7 years. Good video Allyn!
I have been having issues with grubs last year. Never had them before. Found out my neighbors had them and started treating them. The treatment drove them to my yard. I am hoping to send them back. :-D
Allyn I have a fescue lawn in South Carolina i watched the video on Grubs, i found small patches of dead grass so i lifted the dead grass and it pulled wright out of the soil. directly below the surface there was the grub i now have a bag of grub killer going down today. good timing with your video and teaching us about detective work in the lawn love you Bro I bought ( Grub Free zone III)
I just used a 2000 square foot tarp cover the lawn from 10pm to 8am in the last two weeks of June so grubs won’t lay eggs in my lawn. I did it for seven years and my lawn has no grub problems at all.
I had a white grub issue last year here in Maryland. Pretty bad. I used the BayerAdvanved Grub Control product as well as my usual bifenthrin treatments. This year I had zero white grub issues at all. I wiped them out and was super pleased to do so. Bifenthrin on a religious schedule is really an incredible product for anybody who has any type of insect issue.
Thank you for the information. I didn’t even know grubs were an issue in our lawn until raccoons started digging up our lawn every night for the past couple of weeks. We hardly have any lawn left, so we need to get rid of the grubs if we want to keep our lawn from the destructive raccoons.
We have the same problem. It's early April and the skunks and raccoons are decimating our lawn. Even though it's April 5, can we use the 24 hour (dylox) product to control the mature grubs that the skunks etc. are feeding on?
This is by far the best information I have ever heard in one place about grubs. So preventative in the Spring and curative in the Fall, if needed of course. Thanks
I like what you are saying about an integrated approach. Too often people treat for every contingency without a true understanding of impact to the entire ecosystem. Thanks for sharing!
Good info! Cool to see I made the thumbnail and a whole :50 (6:55) at the end! Lol I'll be definitely making sure to lay a preventative this year! PS... The "bucket of grubs" was taken care of by Spectracide's Triazacide Ready to spray hose end sprayer! They surfaced within 12hrs and I picked them all up to prevent birds from eating the poisoned bugs.
if I see any grubs...I am going on the attack...I'm not waiting until my lawn is damaged....that's playing defense....you don't win unless you go on the offensive....
Alan you are Da man. I have been following you I have fired my gardener as they never got it right. My lawn is so much better after following your advice on videos and blogs. Thanks!
Well, I’m in Texas, and just put down Spectracide because I had lots of brown patches that seem to come out of nowhere, and it’s May. My lawn seems to be improving since the application. Thanks for sharing such an informative video.
I found out last fall ! By not expecting raccoons ! Tore up my struggling lawn real good , got some granulated Coyote urine , didn’t work ! I’ll give grub control a shot this fall. Thanks, John
Hi Aalyn, been helping my neighbor get his lawn back into shape but he had some pretty extensive grub damage last fall. I just threw down some grubex for this seasons preventative, but was wondering about spraying some Dominion 2L to wipe out the ones that overwintered and are still there. The lawn is a cool season lawn located on the shore in central NJ. Also, i cannot thank you and all the other youtubers for all the great content as my lawn is an absolute beast and my neighbors bust my chops for how thick, deep green and lush it is. I truly owe it all to you. Be well and keep on keeping on!
I would not recommend worrying about the ones that are there now - they will become adults in another 3 weeks anyway. But you may want to double up on your preventative and the dominion would work for that - apply it in early June
I’ve been killing the grubs to try and get the moles under control. I came across a suggestion to use Milky Spore granules. Supposed to last up to 20 years if put down 3x a year for two years. Kind of expensive if you have a large yard but one bag covers 7k sq ft and not if it works. Plus it’s natural.
camjamsdad wow, that’s good to know. 7 in one night!! I have also started with tomping down any new tunnels, come back later in the day or even a few hours to find new any fresh ones, and then going “Physco” on the new tunnels with a pitch fork!! I actually pulled one up on the end of the fork, very satisfying!! I can imagine getting them in the trap is as well. Happy hunting.
Great vid man I've dealt with thousands of these every year even found them live in February here in NC...kills my fescue I've tried almost everything granular..this year I'm trying hose end triazicide, and soaking the ground wish me luck!!
Grateful for the wealth of knowledge... was literally doing some landscape work this weekend and found a grub seemingly in every shovel full... was about to buy the nuclear option, now I'll get the preventative... Thanks!!!!
The damage for me occurred in the spring growing season last year. Lawn was toast by summer. Didn't know what was happening till I dig around and found white grub things everywhere! Trying to put out preventative this season. (cool season lawn here)
Thanks for sharing this information. I have been fighting these for a couple years and never knew the correct time to put these controls down at an effective time. I actually had backwards... Really glad I picked you off the Cleetus channel.
Thanks Alan for the video. My experience is that freshly laid sod is the preference for grubs. The longer the side is in the ground in terms of years the less probability of visible damage I see. Neighbors lawn's who haven't been replaced every five to seven years like my lawn never use grub treatment that I know of.
I found them in my garden soil , I learned a lot from you , I didn't know that they were June bug babies, I love June bugs , but not the grubs and not in my garden
I’ve been obsessed with your videos since the day I came across your RUclips content. We recently moved to our new home during spring break. I’m learning how to care for my lawn for the first time. On my new property I’m dealing with voles/moles for the first time in my life!! Do you have any tips or suggestions with that ? Thanks!!
I was enjoying this video and had a few chickens next to me and they just screeched when they saw the pics of those yummy grubs. We dont have many bugs in our lawn thanks to my few feather friends.
I loved this very informative video! We're in southeast PA. We have what looks every spring like our yard is a mole (or vole, I'm not certain) superhighway, lots of absolutely bare spots about 12" in diameter. The mole/vole population is bad enough that planting tulip bulbs is out of the question, they're apparently a delicacy for moles/voles. For us, this is a two-prong issue and a solution would be a literal win-win: reduce the grubs and you reduce the moles/voles. We consistently have used either milky spore and/or GrubEx. I've been told milky spore can be less harmful (from a chemical agent standpoint), but that it can take a couple of years to see significant results. In your opinion, is milky spore genuinely effective on grubs? Additionally, over the past couple of years we've noticed the hibiscus plants are VERY appealing to beetles and by summer's end the leaves are chewed on to the point where they look almost like lace! To further discourage beetles from hanging around, we got rid of all the hibiscus plants. In addition to applying a preventive product in the spring and a grub killer in the fall, are there any additional tricks we might try to reduce the grubs so, in turn we can significantly reduce the moles/voles? Thank you for your input.
For those of you in the UK / Europe, you'll need Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer. Not cheap, but it's very good. Matched with a Birchmeier AquaNemix 1.25 V Nematode Applicator for your hose. Application from July to September.
I have a very thick lawn and during drought season I let the lawn very tall and watered and developed grubs because all my neighbors lawns were dried out...grubs did some heavy damage know I just apply season long every year rather safe than go through that again
I like to throw it down when it comes to grubs . I use a multi pest control to hit the fleas and ticks so I throw it down every 35 day and I do it so vigorously because the first year I owned this property grubs hit me so hard if the fall my turf was coming up like a carpet. I hit it extra hard in the fall to make sure we keep it green until the snow falls
First off, Thanks for all the great videos that are both informative but also entertaining! Keep up the great work. Quick question, I sprayed some beneficial nematodes about a week ago in hope of killing off some of our grubs. We have a few visible brown spots from them, but 90% of our lawn is doing great. Due to pets I always try to start with the natural approach first. Do you suggest I try a few applications of more nematodes or go the chemical route in this video? I'm not sure if these chemicals will kill off the nematodes that are also working their magic against the grubs. Thanks!
Thank you, this was the most scientific intelligent discussion of grubs and grub management. I need to dig the bare patches of my lawn! I know you’re the lawn guy, what do I do for grubs in my raised beds for tomatoes. I haven’t had problems with the vegetables in past seasons and I manually dig & pick them out. Would beneficial nematodes treatment be advisable? Thank you!
I have the same question. I have no lawn but a very nice garden and that is what they love. I turn the soils at least once a year and hand pick. Need help please.
First, thank you for your wisdom! My question is can I apply grass seed and grub killer at the same time? If not, how long should I wait to add the grub killer? It's been three days since I've added my new grass seed. Thank you.
I was wondering what happened to the lawn last summer ! We had Raccoons peeling back the lawn and that’s when we learned it was grubs. This video came at a wonderful time. Thanks for the content. I was wondering about starting over and putting down new seeds to grow new turf. You have any ideas on how to restart.
We had good luck last year with apply beneficial nematodes. We did it to keep the moles out of our lawn - the beneficial nematodes kill the grubs which the moles are going after. We didn't have any mole tunnels but our neighbors did.
Here in Dallas tx grubs are out of control, I use a mix of malathion 4 gallons and spray the yard closely front to back, flower beds an 2 ft into neighboring yards 3 times a year, spring, summer, fall. Even helps during army worm wars. Stinks bad but sure wipes them all out just don't spray in hot sun
I usually catch about 50 to 75 grubs and cook them on the skillet. I marinate them first in salt, pepper, garlic powder for about 4 hours. They come out so delicious!!!🤙🤙
I don’t ever find grubs in the lawn, but I do in my surrounding planters. I let them be and do their thing, but if I do get them in the lawn, it means war. Great video. Watching your content is just as enjoyable as the mow.
I End up putting GrubEx down a lot because I get moles/voles, etc that come in and dig for the grubs in my lawn. The grubs aren't bad but that's what really tears my lawn apart.
I remember a couple years ago I had a few moles in my yard. I put down grub killer, and overnight I had grubs dead all over my yard. Within a couple days the moles seemed to have moved on to somewhere else.
Thank you...I have to use both...new home owner...I saw the grubs...so I will jump on corrective and then move onto the first one... great video and information...👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
I just moved into a house where there are tons of grubs. I was pulling dandelions yesterday and at least 2-3 grubs would be right where the weed was. It’s mid April here in the Pacific NW and we are currently soggy with lots of rain. I was thinking about using some of the GrubEX on my lawn once the grass dries out a little.
Are you serious?!Had a bare back gardenfor years due to Rotties and mastiffs.Last year turned it over, laid turf....job done!Found your channel and jeez so much to go wrong.Thought grass just grew.....but nah,i'm learning ty👍😁
I live in Michigan. I bought a few bags of the bioadvanced season long grub control. Do I need to time it with spring milorganite applications, and patching repair seeding? Or do these products not affect one another if applied within a close time window? Thanks
Very informative video. This is the first year my front lawn has been ravaged by grubs and it's extremely annoying. I live in Ottawa, Canada. I have treated the area with Scotts Grub BGone but biggest issue is doing the right thing for my destroyed lawn before winter sets in. Do you have any recommendations as to what is the next step ie. raking all dead grass, top dressing now and then overseed? Again, great video.
Good Video. I am converting my lawn from Bermuda to Zoygia. While removing the Roundup killed Bermuda grass I noticed grub worms. On average about 2 grubs per 4 square feet. After seeing this video I do not need to treat. However I did see a lot of earthworms , which is good. Do products used to control grub worms impact earthworms?
You answered my question with the Integrative Pest Management. I've pulled up 5 or so grubs over the last year without noticing any damage. I guess that's not enough to treat. I'll let the birds feed off them. Great info!
If you have five in a small area you should multiply five by the proportion that the small area is in comparison to your entire lawn. Then you find you have many more than that which you can’t see right now.
Wow. Discovered you by accident Mr. LCN and I am so impressed. Excellent vid. To the point and packed with solid and really good info. Will share with friends.Thx. Looking forward to checking out other vids you’ve done.
I use BioAdvanced 24hr with Dylox only as a standby, if visually needed. I do use the BioAdvanced Complete Insect Killer and apply mid-June. To help the bees, it's best to first mow the lawn containing any flowering weeds before application. Any post flowering weeds should then be safe for bees. ~ mike
Hello, thanks for all your great videos. I enjoy them very much. Quick question, I over seeded my lawn a week ago but they haven't germinated yet and the grass is starting to get really long. Can I mow the lawn after over seeding and seeds haven't germinated? If i can, I will mow at the highest level to avoid the baby grass from being pulled out. Only a few have started to grow but are small. Thank you!
New Subscriber here and thanks for all your help with your Great Videos. I’m in Nebraska and new to Lawn care but off to a good start this season. I’ve gained a lot of insight from watching your videos. Thanks
It's early April and the skunks and raccoons are decimating our lawn. Even though it's April 5, can we use the 24 hour (dylox) product to control the mature grubs that the skunks etc. are feeding on?
Hey Allyn,We folks in Florida would like a video with some in depth information about sod web worm. It would appear there is some similarity in treatment and life cycle with grubs and we need to jump on them now... HELP!
I live in Crown Point, IN... got dozens of june bugs everywhere at night! Compacted clay soil here. Already applied GrubEx on May 6th. Hope it helps this fall
If there was a SUPER HERO for lawn care my man you "OWN IT".... to thee a grass poem is fit.... I grow in places others can’t, where wind is high and water scant. I drink the rain, I eat the sun; before the prairie winds I run. I see, I sprout, I grow, I creep, and in the ice and snow, I sleep. On steppe or veld or pampas dry, beneath the grand, enormous sky, I make my humble, bladed bed. And where there’s level ground, I spread. BY JOYCE SIDMAN
So, grubs in the spring aren't a concern (no need for preventative control) but by the time you realize they are a concern (fall) your grass is dying in large patches and you need corrective control? I'm confused. I guess it's too late for me because its fall and my grass is dying from them. So, can I treat with 24hr grub killer and plant new grass at the same time or do I need to wait a week or two after treatment to plant the new grass seed?
I use Milky spore, it takes a few years but after say 3 years the results for me have been amazing. They say after the three years that grub control is good for the next 10 not sure about that but my grub issue has more or less gone away.
Hope you still check the feedback I am laying new sod ( in florida in july) and after lifting the old sod I see grubs what should I use in the soil before laying sod
My beagle digs up the grubs and eats them. So my lawn has a bunch of holes everywhere. She's a great hunting dog ,best I've ever had. So I'll live with some holes.......
Allen, Great Video! I really enjoy watching your videos from the past as well, as I did yesterday. I noticed you didn't mention Dominion 2L this time, which is Imidacloprid. I crunched the numbers as you did in an older video, and for my yard, I'm able to get many more apps out of the liquid form than the one app I'd get from the one bag of granular, and for the same price. Thanks for taking the time to make these video, and love the jazz background music.
Preventative not really correct term. June bugs still lay eggs in grass with the insecticide. It just helps get a jump start on the new grubs. Corrective should be used in spring since they are already grown. However hard to kill when that mature, which is why most say don't worry about spring. I find Arena works great. Put it on heavy in early spring if you think the lawn is infested. Then again in July for new worms. Also Arena won't degrade if you can't water immediately. Most require watering within a few days.
Scotts is selling Grubgone here saying it is 95% as effective as Merit. It is Bacillus thurengenesis galleria. Same application, spread in June, water in so it goes to the roots.

South Carolina, they're eating up my yard, and now I have an armadillo digging and feeding in my yard
Raccoons did the same to me and I am peed!!! My lawn was stunning until this. 😮
We had good luck last year with apply beneficial nematodes. We did it to keep the moles out of our lawn - the beneficial nematodes kill the grubs which the moles are going after. We didn't have any mole tunnels but our neighbors did.
Cityof Oaks where did you get these nematodes?
Straight, easy to understand... to the point..excellent vid LCN...
Please tell me you're kidding!?
@@juliemcdaniel4937 no not kidding, you should try it sometime. They look like tiny shrimps.
I like the Grub control but I also like the insect control. It control the fleas in my yard all summer long. My dogs really appreciate it.
A video in the middle of the week?? Yes!!!
Wow...so that's where the bugs come from...from my own yard -_- ugh. Glad I'm getting it treated today!
I remember a couple years ago I had a few moles in my yard. I put down grub killer, and overnight I had grubs dead all over my yard. Within a couple days the moles seemed to have moved on to somewhere else.
So if I haven’t seen grubs but I have seen moles. Does that mean they know something I don’t? There for I should treat? I am in Michigan.

I was so looking forward to seeing you dance in the lawn again.... oh well. Great info as always Allyn. 👍🏻
🤘😂
discovered this video by accident. Excellent Video. A "must watch" if you have grub issues.!!!
Very informative channel! Came here because freedom but i like this.
Hey Alan up here in Canada we can’t get any of those good Chem’s however we can get nema todes to treat gubs when would you recommend to apply those
I appreciate that you included an aspect of IPM.
Thank you...I have to use both...new home owner...I saw the grubs...so I will jump on corrective and then move onto the first one... great video and information...👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Sent that last one before I could finish. I was saying, been watching you for years " Your the God Father of lawn care" stay safe.
Thanks for the tutorial! How many other people had to rewind multiple times to catch it all (me)?
Tons of info. Exactly why RUclips exists. Thanks !
You answered my question with the Integrative Pest Management. I've pulled up 5 or so grubs over the last year without noticing any damage. I guess that's not enough to treat. I'll let the birds feed off them. Great info!
Tom Carrow you say that until it’s too late and you end up with moles and tunnels everywhere.
Love your lawn care post about grubs. I'm taking corrective measures now. How do I treat for moles? Thanks again for sharing. Pluck
HELP!
Allyn you are my new hero! Your videos are alway on point! Thank you!
I grow in places
others can’t,
where wind is high
and water scant.
I drink the rain,
I eat the sun;
before the prairie winds
I run.
I see,
I sprout,
I grow,
I creep,
and in the ice
and snow, I sleep.
On steppe or veld
or pampas dry,
beneath the grand,
enormous sky,
I make my humble,
bladed bed.
And where there’s level ground,
I spread.

Thank you for the information…Central Florida
sooo, what to use now- in June 1, in North of Alabama?
I use Milky spore, it takes a few years but after say 3 years the results for me have been amazing. They say after the three years that grub control is good for the next 10 not sure about that but my grub issue has more or less gone away.
Can I apply BioAdvanced Lawn Control in the Fall? I mean this weekend (end of September)? I have Kentucky Bluegrass (cool season).
Hope you still check the feedback I am laying new sod ( in florida in july) and after lifting the old sod I see grubs what should I use in the soil before laying sod
Thanks for the content on such a good topic. I totally forgot to be looking out for this soon.
My beagle digs up the grubs and eats them. So my lawn has a bunch of holes everywhere. She's a great hunting dog ,best I've ever had. So I'll live with some holes.......
Need to train her to do that with truffles.
My beagle did that too! I thought I just had a weird dog,😂
Which should I use first, grub control or weed and feed? And how long should I wait until applying the other product. When can I oversee?
This is exactly what I needed to see. Thank you!
Great video. Changed up my grub calendar application dates. Thanks.
Thanks for taking the time to make these video, and love the jazz background music.
yes this works great, if you like the liquid use it for sure.
Just laid GrubEx last weekend. Used half bag that’s good for up to 4 months. Think it’s okay to lay the other half of the bag come August?
Allyn I treated my lawn with triazicide. Is it safe to compost the grass clippings this summer? The compost will be used in my veggie garden.
Green screen baby! Love it !😎👊
