The process is taught in top design and business schools around the world. Step 1: Empathize
The purpose of step one is to conduct interviews that give you an idea about what people really care about. We need to empathize with their situation.
For example, if you want to help old people, you might find that they want to keep the ability to walk around. In your conversations, they might share with you different ways they can do that. Later into the interview you'll want to dig a little deeper, look for personal stories or situations where things became difficult. Ideally, you redo the process with many people with the same problem.
Step 2: Define the Problem
Looking at the interviews, you can now understand the actual needs that people are trying to fulfill with certain activities. One way to do that is to underline the verbs or activities that the people mentioned when talking about their problems: like going for a walk, meeting old friends for tea, or simply going grocery shopping around the corner store. You might realize it's not so much about going out, but more about staying in touch. After your analysis, formulate a problem statement: “Some elderly are afraid to be lonely. The want to stay connected.”
Step 3: Ideate
Now focus only on the problem statement and come up with ideas that solve the problem. The point is not to get a perfect idea, but rather to come up with as many ideas: like unique virtual reality experiences, senior friendly hover boards or a modified pushcart. Whatever it is, sketch up your best ideas and show them to the people you are trying to help, so you get their feedback.
Step 4: Prototype
Now take a moment to reflect on what you have learned from your conversations about the different ideas. Ask yourself, how does your idea fit in the context of people's actual lives. Your solution could be a combination of a new idea and what is already being used. Then connect the dots, sketch up your final solution and go build a real prototype that's just good enough to be tested.
Step 5: Test
Now test your prototype with actual users. Don't defend your idea in case people don't like it, the point is to learn what works and what didn't, so any feedback is great. Then go back to ideation or prototyping and apply your learning. Repeat the process until you have a prototype that works and solves the real problem. Now you are ready to change the world or open shop.

Well and clearly explained. I would also add "Research" between "Define The Problem" and "Ideate".
Research is also an important step in the design process where we learn about the already existing solutions/designs given the problem that we have defined! :)

This was great. I watched it 3 times in order to internalize everything. This was not difficult to understand, but I can see why it is critical to add this to part of my teaching and training mantra. Simple but so important to add to one's self.

you have beautifully described the work of an occupational therapist as he thinks in the management of technology
This was a great activity. I really learned alot and it clarified the differnces in the steps of the process. I do believe that the empathizing step is key in the design process. We must do the research and find out what our consumer needs and the solutions to meet those needs. The gift giving project allowed me to walk through the steps and understand clearer what was going on in each step. So, my gift giving idea is to create a surprise gathering of my husband's children and grandchildren in one location. Going through the experience, I learned that my husband had not been able to be in his children's lives when they were younger. They all grew up in different homes because they were products of different marriages. He expressed that he had no pictures of himself with all of them and that he definately does not know all of his grandchildren as he desires. So planning this ultimate surprise union is the gift idea.

We cannot stress empathy enough! Design Thinking is all about getting in the customer's minds and seeing things from their point of view instead of looking at things as a marketing professional.

The whistling background music is too loud and distracting. We suggest either removing it entirely or reducing the whistling by a minimum of 66%, 80% preferably.

Hmm, what’s an example/scenario of
“liberatory design” either in action and/or as a mental framework for any given project?
What’s the etymology? Why the word-choice of “liberation”? I get the gist of “liberating” design-thinking so it can grow and become refined, though what’s _yOur_ thought on it? 🤔🙂
Interesting explanation. One question: why has “design thinking” been sold as something novel ? Did the inventor of a bicycle know about this concept? Too bad that empathy was not available to people until a few decades ago when UX writers discovered it.

You missed an important part in the video about design thinking, it is an iterative process, when you are done in the test fase you are not nececarily finished, you can go back to the beginning and follow through the whole proces again to further improve the solutution.
