To my ears, Joshua Bell is not only an exquisite soloist with a musical mind of unmatched subtlety, but also immensely sensitive to the orchestra -- a great ensemble player. I don't always hear that in the soloist to this degree. There was nothing missing, nothing out of place, no imposition of personal dominance, just Heavenly music.
I agree. His performances are always balanced very well with the orchestra and himself, which I'd imagine is very hard to do. It adds to the experience so much, being able to hear all of the moving parts working together to create a great experience.
It's frustrating listening to this concerto if the violinist is not powerful, or has a weak instrument or the sound tech doesn't know how to mic the violin. I could hear every note, both from Bell and from the orchestra. I've always been thrilled by Bell's playing. He hits it out of the park here. Thanks, JB!!! Thanks, Bamburg! Thanks, Dvorak!
Apollo came down from Olympus to play the violin in this magnificent concerto. In contrast to what I might read down in the comments, I real enjoyed very much Bell's facial expressions - that means that he feels music when playing it! If people get somewhat upset with the expressions... just close their eyes... You are great Joshua Bell! Bravo! Bravissimo! Arcibravo!
Absolutely! I remember a concert with Barry Tuckwell performing with the Minnesota Orchestra many decades ago and he stood there stoic, expressionless, dispassionate, which robbed the performance of any soul. Barry was a great master on the horn, but he did his audience disservice at what could have been a more memorable performance.
The Bamberg Symphonic Orchestra made a huge step forward ..thanks to Hrusa. I‘ve seen them live playing Beethoven 5th. Performing like a dream.Best Beethoven 5th ever heard. This Orchestra is following very lyrical and with musicality the theme . Great Bell here .
I forgot to compliment the orchestra and the conductor. The orchestra was so sensitive with great section leaders playing solos. This is the best example of this piece for me. It’s hard to find orchestras and soloists where it’s all about the music! Plenty of tempo fluctuations. BRAVO not to be afraid of doing ritardandos and breaths, etc. Not just conservative, sterile educated musical phrasing.
Gorgeous piece by 1 of the greats. As played by 1 of, if not the greatest. This is video you have to see, as well as hear. To see how Joshua throw himself fully into this performance - face, body, and literally sweat.
This is very similar to the first recording I heard of this concerto 45 years ago - Derek Collier on Decca. that recording spoiled me for slower, less emotional versions. Loving this!
Dvořak and Tchaikovsky became friends when Tchaikovsky did few times concerts in Prague (and tour in Europe)...They were also on Verdi´s Opera Ottelo together in Prague.
Without doubt and utterly superb and amazing and incredibly beautiful Joshua you are beyond brilliant and outstandingly wonderful. Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you playing this with such passion and sensitivity too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags ❤❤❤
I have always marveled on how people can memorize ...learn ... KNOW ... the music so well as to NOT need any music before them. I guess it is ..felt ... learned. I am not sure as I have never talked to a concert violinist. This piece gives me goosebumps. My father ... and in a small part ... Bugs Bunny... gave me a love for classical.
He plays more in the “traditional old fashioned “ style. A true concert artist has their own sound and style. It’s nice to hear individuality and true artistry!!! BRAVO !!!!! He ranks up there with Heifetz, Stern, Milstein, Oistrakh, Perlman, Zukerman, Tretyakov, Gitlis, Rosand, Haendel, Szeryng, Rapin, Vengerov, etc. All great individual sounding virtuosos. He is one of the few last live reminders of a previous era of playing.

This was a magnificent rendition of this concerto, Mr Bell played it with so much attention to detail and his interpretation was perfectly lyrical and songful! I'm so happy to have found this video! A rare gem! 😍❤️😍

I wonder about people who think his facial expressions mean he dislikes this concerto. A few weeks ago he made pretty much the same expressions playing the Sibelius violin concerto. I guess he doesn't like that concerto either, or someone in the front row had B.O.
I agree with you...Bell is favourite in New York and is preferred over Hahn or Ehnes by the uneducated public. His vibrato is weak and interpretations quite insignificant.
For Christ's sake stand still man, you're making me nervous with all that moving around. Furthermore, this performance leaves me completely cold. Too nervous, too sweaty, not inspired.
Lol you don’t know anything about interpretation. You really think a soloist can’t feel his playing containing negative emotions and just let it pass and perform it?
@@bruh7130 I really don't understand anything about interpretation; but I prefer less theater and more art, as in the stone face of Heifetz, Mistein, Rubinstein, Claudio Arrau and others ...
I agree with you. However, I would like to disagree that moving oneself or gestures shows that a soloist doesn’t like the piece. I think stone faces can be good when it’s time to focus, but always having a stone face lacks showmanship and makes the audience bored.
@@bruh7130 I wrote a joke about Joshua Bell "not liking the Dvorak Concerto"... certainly he likes. I am brazilian and here, in the tropics, we laugh about serious things to express what we feel. These facial expressions tire the audience; a good artist does'nt need to make faces to express the subtleties of art; the best music is that we can hear with closed eyes (so said the great Brazilian composer and conductor Camargo Guarnieri with whom I worked for many years). Heifetz and Milstein had stone faces and were nonetheless charismatic.
@@bruh7130 This was a very intemperate response to an ill-expressed attempt to tell a joke. There is no reason to get unpleasantly personal at somebody who doesn't know the nuances of English as well as you seem to.

Very sensible comments from Katia and Sir Vincent. Bravo
I closed my eyes and was offended by the intonation the faces were better
If they don't like it they should play without funny faces instead.
Very affecting playing from Maestro Bell. The Bamberg S. O. Once again proves itself the most underrated orchestra on Earth, in my opinion. Hoomeyow!!
