Been watching a lot of your Fusion tutorials and, one of the reasons i really didn't want to completely switch from After Effects to Fusion, was because not being able to make freeze frames in the Fusion tab itself without having to going back to edit page to do it. Because a lot of modern edit videos, like for example car videos etc. requires a lot of freeze frames and watching this video i learned we can do that using the timespeed node and also learned a lot of new stuff. So i think i am ready to make a complete switch now to Fusion. Thanks Casey for helping a lot of people who are trying to learn new software free of cost. May god help with everything. Massive Respect. : )
Maybe I'm weird but I just started using Fusion this year and I can't understand how ppl are intimidated by it...I freakin love it! I've never used a node based program before but it just makes sense to me....WAY easier than After Effects.
Casey. You have so much patience.. I like the way you explain things and how much effort you put into thinking how you'll be explaining things.. thank you..
Hey Casey, I followed along 41:10, where the motion of the still frame and the spaceship is matched. But then you moved on to "problems with color and 3D nerdiness". Can you let me know how to make the person move? My output currently looks like what you show at 41:10.
Thanks for uploading this, what an amazing 2 days it was, so glad I was able to make remotely, maybe one day in person. You and your collegues are the only reason I was able to switch from Premiere to Resolve, still a newb in Fusion but your ability to "teach" and way of doing it, really helps to make it easier to understand. Thank you #CaseyFaris.
You don't need to have nodes divide and then multiply, some nodes, like color corrector, have a "pre-Divide/post-Multiply" box that you can tick in their option tab.
WOW I have been having that transparency issue for months! BEST TIP ever. I want to learn fusion in stead of nuke, cause nuke is so expensive and I am just learning, but I can t find anything on how to composite anything but 3d titles. I want to do explosions and matte paintings. Do you know of any classes that teach more of the stuff you taught in this clss? Thanks
33:24 Why is Delay in TimeSpeed set to 58? You didn't explain that. Why is it necessary to delay by 58 frames? If you're freezing the image, don't you just set speed to 0?
@@CaseyFaris hi Casey thanks! I couldn’t have hoped for anything better than the actual guy in the video to respond to my comment hahahah thanks I appreciate it! I’ve been watching a lot of your videos recently as I will be switching from FCPX to DaVinci Resolve Studio. Your videos have been so helpful! Btw, I couldn’t find a clear answer to this: If one buys Resolve Studio 18, do you also get Fusion Studio 18 or does that have to be purchased separately?
Here's the disconnect for me with Fusion: Some of the nodes are pretty self-explanatory; transform, blur, text, background, merge, etc. But there are others that based on their names, you can't tell what they do or how/when/why to use them. If I want to do XYZ in a comp, what node(s) do I use to accomplish X, Y, and Z? I don't think it's practical to just through darts in the dark by grabbing and connecting them to see "IF" they do what you want it to do. It still amazes me how people like Casey, Patrick, Alex, etc are able to wiz though fusion so effortlessly. 🤔😝🤔
I plan on retiring in a few years and am starting to learn Resolve. My question is how much of what can be done in After Effects can be done in Resolve? I teach an intro course in VFX and as a district, we use Adobe, mainly because of the certifications available, that students can use toward meeting state graduation requirements. Once I retire, I don't really want to pay for the Adobe Suite.
Well according to RUclipsrs, who do tutorials, Fusion can do 95% of what After Effects can. But I don't know what it's based on. The thing with these guys (and people who do AE guides), is, that they are self taught DIY'ers. I've never actually seen a pro doing tutorials in either. 95% of all tutorials are about 2D stuff, like lower thirds text etc. AE is strong here, because that was the purpose of AE, in the first place. It's also why AE is a 2.5D compositor, while professional software like Fusion and Nuke, are true 3D compositors. Fusion is actually the oldest, going back to 1987, while AE & Nuke are from the early 90s. If you go back 15-20 years, Fusion was as big, as Nuke, and was used for VFX in Hollywood blockbusters. Movies, like "Avatar" and "2012" used Fusion, as the main compositor, but really any movie uses a number of compositors. This is because there's often many VFX companies involved in one movie, and they all use different software, and often in house software, that can't be bought. To answer your question, I'm sure Fusion can do 100% of what AE can, regarding 2D work, but some things may be more complicated to do. And for 3D work, Fusion is way more powerful, but you probably could achieve similar results, but with much more convoluted work, in AE. I'm pretty sure, that Blackmagic at some point will pick up the pace on Fusion development. They spend the time of implementing the software, from a stand-alone, and into DaVinci Resolve. Now it's time to justify the transaction, by making it an up to date compositor.
AE is 2.5D and Fusion is full 3D. Fusion has been used in thousands of movies to do VFX where AE is mostly professionally used for motion graphics only. There you go.
At 53:42 are your Alpha Divide + Alpha Multiply nodes doing the same as the Pre-Divide/Post-Multiply check box in the “Options” tab in the Color Corrector?
Well, I'm not Casey obviously but yes, they are doing the same thing 👍 However I can really recommend splitting them up in nodes like Casey did so that your flow is more readable and you don't have to worry about ticking the box in every single color correction node you use.
Also, if I remember correctly, I think someone in the audience asked the exact same question (1:02:25), and Casey said that doing it in nodes just once vs several times through the check boxes can minimize quality degradation. Also, it has the readability benefits that come from doing the node based system.
Fantastic - broken down nicely! I just finished my little halloween composite tutorial (Casey's explanations are way better), and I did some things slightly differently (but I may well go back and change some things). Thanks Casey for organising a great weekend, I might try and attend in person next time! Cheers!
Interestingly when I applied the mask I had to invert it then I added the tracking to the patch so far so good then I added the tracking to the mask and weirdly its just the still image following the camera shake
I really want to use Resolve but if trying to follow a tutorial step by step runs me into problems every time I try I just think I should quit.... like why isnt the poly mask working like shown in this class.. I dont have it inverted.... in fact if I do click invert the stands go away... but then applying the tracking to the mask breaks it... the whole still image starts moving around.
i started clapping with everyone in the seminar room becaus this explained so many "WHY IS IT NOT WORKING " moments i have when working with Fusion. Thanks
I couldn't make it. I made it till about 31 minutes while cutting trimming my nails and cutting my hair. BTW, I've used Fusion the other day. I did finish that video. I get it, If I keep "just doing it", I'll get used to it. Still, it doesn't get simpler. I'm going to tune out now Casey, till the next video... 😁

I really hope Blackmagic spend some time updating Fusion. It has so much potential but is really lagging behind other aspects of the software and other tools like Nuke. It really is capable of much more than the 3D titles that Blackmagic tends to promote.
@@3D_TUTS It has more advanced nodes for high end VFX for movies, if you wanna work in VFX studios to work on movies then learn Nuke. Fusion does most of what Nuke does while being a fraction of the price and it also has more motion graphics features than Nuke.
Well, basically if you can find the tools, in the drop down menu (Shift+Space), then yes. It's basically the more complex tools, that are in the paid only version. So test, if you have the planar tracker and a few of the others available, or check them all. But I think they are.
Great presentation, but how's the title is "Next-Level VFX In Fusion" but the stuff shown is basically the most basic compositing like putting one image over a video and tracking the BG footage and applying the camera motion to the FG image. No hate but just genuine disappointment.
UGH... why the f does fusion do that div/mult thing for CCing layers with transparency?!?! black magic needs to FIX that because that is BROKEN. and it's broken because when would you EVER want the default effect???! that's broken and the div/mult is an absurd, backwards, embarassing work around. Hmm, no it's not broken. This is how image processing works. I do agree it should probably do it by default tho, as that's what you want most of the time.

To be fair there is thorough documentation by Black Magic even though I personally prefer tutorials like these.
You break down the effect you wanna do 1 by 1 and then use basic nodes and daisy chain them to make complex effects.
31 people in the audience! Not bad!
I did not expect so many people being serious about this weird stuff.
As soon as I clicked "2" on the PlanarTracker the screen just went all black and nothing was displayed at all. How should I fix that?
Maybe you could split all segments and upload those files individually. A bit hard to scratch through 16 hours of footage.
