  • In this video (1457) I take a look at a Panasonic Bicycle Lock (model SAJ080) that I found online. Man, is it JUNK! Easy to pick, despite a threatening looking key, and made from...wait for it....aluminum. JUNK!

    It's low security as that's all that is needed in Japan. Most people don't even bother with a lock.

    Fun fact, Panasonic has been making bicycles for many years, so it’s not really a surprise that they make locks for them too.
    As many other people have mentioned security isn’t a major issue in Japan either.
    I’ve had mates leave $3k bmx bikes unlocked outside a restaurant when they’re having lunch in Tokyo without any issues.

  • @MichaelBerthelsen

    On the left it says it's even gentle on the bike body because they use a silicone cover/sleeve. On the right they say it's hard to use a fake key because they use a double dimple key.😅 Says something about safe 安 in white, but can't see it behind the U...
    Edit: OK, checked the white writing, says it should bring you peace of mind, since it's a 3-pinner...😂

    Panasonic also makes bikes! Though they stopped importing to the US when the Yen flipped in the late 80's, they are still making bikes in Japan. I have a touring bicycle from '83 made by Panasonic and it's awesome. This is a cool lock!

  • @mynameisneo7

    This is a genuine Panasonic bike lock which you can find on their cycling website-- bikes are very popular in Japan, which is why Panasonic (and lots of big corporations) sell bike accessories. However, this lock is actually priced at ¥2,800 in Japan, or about $25 USD.

    • @MichaelBerthelsen
      @MichaelBerthelsen 5 лет назад

      Add shipping and handling to the US, $35 doesn't sound like a huge mark-up. Still a rip-off for the quality lock you get, though.😂

    • @mynameisneo7
      @mynameisneo7 5 лет назад

      @@MichaelBerthelsen it's definitely not a quality lock but keep in mind, 2,800 yen is the MSRP from the official website. I'd guess it's probably sold for a much lower price at bargain bike shops/websites.
      Also as mentioned by other commentors, theft is not as prevelant in Japan. It's not uncommon for bikes to be left outside without locks at all.

    • @MichaelBerthelsen
      @MichaelBerthelsen 5 лет назад

      @@mynameisneo7 Dude, I know. I live here. 😅 It's mostly to prevent joyriders and drunk assholes at night. Oh, and it's just under 2000 on Amazon, their prices are usually some of the lowest you can get. Found a review by a Japanese guy too, said a pair of 600mm bolt cutters went through like butter...😅 Apparently a pair of 350mm just ended up hurting his hands.😂 Also made a good point. If your bike is worth locking up, get a lock that's worth locking it up with.

      Well, since the mere possession of lock-picking paraphernalia can get you a fine of $50,000 and/or a year in jail, not a lot of gear floatinf around. There's a reason I have plenty of locks here, but have to wait until I'm outside Japan to do anything with them. They have great practice locks, but you're not allowed to have the gear to practice with... Which sucks, since I live here for now, and can only enjoy it when I'm home for holidays.😅

    Panasonic makes far better bike tires than they do bike locks. See panaracer tires. They compete with schwalbe, a German manufacturer of bike tires.
    As for bike locks i come here to find out which ones i should not get. Then wait until one that was reccomended to me is picked in a few minutes leading me to curse my 180 dollar purchase of a bike lock and chain.

    Aluminium shackle? Even LOTO locks with a plastic body have a hardened steel shackle. I guess it would help hold the bike upright if fastened to a sturdy object. Might as well go all out low security & make the whole thing out of a 3D printed plastic.

    • @BD90..
      @BD90.. 5 лет назад

      I know that they used cheap materials buddy, but in a way is there much point these days in hardening a thin shackle anyway as a bolt cutters gets through hardened shackles and grinders get through everything. I think a aluminum shackle is still useful since they can cut through steel and at least with aluminum it will give you a lighter lock to carry.
