I just wanted to let you know that me and my wife got locked inside a state park after hours. We were late getting back and they locked us in. We called the police and they couldn't get us out/didn't know the code. The park rangers were unreachable. This video got us and our RV out in 4 minutes once I decided to check on your videos. I have been a long time fan and amateur picker. Thank you, you saved us tonight.
I got locked behind the security gate at Public Storage & was lucky the manager lived on site & heard us yelling. She said next time the police would be notified cuz it's considered trespassing after hours! We were at the gate 1 minute after 9pm with 2 toddlers in the car. Our code wouldn't work after hours. Crap.
I know why, 1:30 am, now I have to replace about 200 locks. I've been getting the newer version with the hexagonal shackle and black body. I doubt they are as easily decoded because I think there is a mechanism that locks the wheels in place if you put pressure on the shackle. I know the wheels can only be moved when it is closed and they only like to go in one direction. But, I still have a lot of the older brass body ones, not sure what model number. BTW, Def Leppard sucks

This video actually helped me earn some above-board cash, so thank you for making it. I use to have a job in a small business office setting that use these specific locks on literally everything they wanted to keep locked. Well, they had a big reshuffle of the things they had attached the locks to and all of the locks on them were meant to be set to have new codes when re-assigned to their new lockers. The idea that was proposed by upper management was that they were going to go around and unlock every lock they had, set them to a neutral code (like 1111) and then drop them all in a big bin and then dole them back out after the locker reshuffle was done. Since they had a nice neutral combination, we could just grab one out of the bin, reset it to an _actual_ code, and then lock the locker. Apparently the memo didn't get through though and a key part of those instructions were left out somewhere along the way. The officer manager was meant to handle it and she ended up giving the job to one of her staff, but they just took all of the locks off, didn't clear their codes, and just jumbled them into a big bin - presumably told they were being replaced as part of the big reorganization. At the time, these locks were like $20-$30 a pop, so we must've had like two or three grand worth of locks that the company was going to have to throw out and replace because they were useless (arguably, they've always been useless if you've seen this video). I informed my manager that I knew how to reset every single lock in the bin if they wanted me to, but they'd have to live with the idea that all of the product, supplies, etc. that was stored in those lockers were effectively just security illusion and not any sort of actual obstacle. From my manager, I was told that the plan from upper management was to just replace the locks 1-to-1 with the exact same style of lock and that they weren't interested in getting more secure ones, so they'd be interested to know a way to get out of making such a purchase. I told the office administrator that I could get all of the locks working again without having to buy new ones. If they were willing to cut me a check for $1k as a "consultant fee" on top of my normal hourly rate, I'd take the bin and return them to her after getting them all reset. It took them three days to get back to me, but she came back with HR and a document that they'd drafted, agreeing to pay out if I could do it. She said I could just work on it whenever I had some spare time and I had like a week to finish. A quick lookup of this video to refresh myself and it was done in like 2 hours. Office manager was _not_ particularly pleased to learn that like every cabinet and locker in the building could be undone in such a short time, but she was quite pleased that she wouldn't have to go to the owner and explain that she needs to expense out a few thousand dollars because of an error made by her department. So thanks LPL. You helped me make some of the easiest money of my life.
Master still hasn't learned. I used a similar technique 50 years ago on school lockers when kids forgot their combinations. I could simply feel when I hit a good number and typically opened those padlocks in a couple of minutes. I probably missed a chance to have an interesting locksmith career lol.
I remember in school I could open any master lock by just taking off my gym shoe and giving it a good whack. It didn’t even hurt the lock, just opened it.
you can do the exact same with Daiso’s fixed-code combination bike lock. i’ve used it a few times for very (very) low-risk applications and forgot the code once. barely took me longer than when i had the code.

Masterlock engineers must be pissed when they go on youtube and see so many videos showing how easy it is to pick their locks or better yet watch someone figure out the combonation of a lock in literally seconds lol.
The original designs for most things are pretty good, but the shareholders and CEOs want to make a super cheap version in order to make more money The engineers are pissed at how stupid some people can be
they are scamming people by selling the security that does not exist. those locks are nothing but deterrents. but if anybody will try to open them - it won't hold anybody.
@sightinsight Precisely what I was going to say. If it's a good strategy for the NSA and CIA to hire hackers you'd think lock makers would follow suit.
no, him reviewing their locks is for the best because that way they can actually see any mistakes or flaws and fix them, meaning they can make better and safer locks
I was a practicing Locksmith for 20+ years and I still watch all these videos, learning something new each time. Even though I no longer do it as a trade I believe you can never stop learning. I have found that to many people in the Locksmith trade get complacent after learning yhe basics of the trade and if anything changes they just resort to destroying the lock then taking the time to learn about a new product. Please keep putting these videos out.
I totally can relate with you! My dad owned 4 locksmith shops and I helped out in them since I was about 12 yrs old. I went on service calls and handled all the ordering of supplies...my preference in padlocks has always been Master and Brinks but after watching this video; I've came to the realization that no lock is totally secure!! Wow! I can't wait to forward this to my dad!!! Thanks for the informative lesson!!!
This is such a rare mentality these days, and yet so valuable. If everyone had the respect to give others a chance and the humbleness to be willing to learn, the world wouldn't be half as shite as it can be now.
@Stepping West Lol. No, I'm fully aware that people's laptops and phones are monitored and their search history is also watched. I know this. It just doesn't bother me becasue I normally just look up old cartoons and goth sh*t
When I went to college in the 1970’s I lived in the dorms. Many students had a bicycle and they would store them in the basement, the basement was full of bikes. Back then, everyone used a simple chain with a built-in combo lock (you still see similar locks even today). They were so easy to open it was ridiculous, you would just pull on them as you turned the combo lock and feel for a click to get the correct number. As a prank, someone opened every lock and move them to different bikes. Lol, the next few days everyone went crazy saying they could not open their locks on their bike!
Upon reading my comment I realized that 3 HAs would sound better than 2 HAs. So here it is. Hahaha....nasty prank my man!! By the way, I am still here on this upload because I feel good about being able to open a Master lock now after I tried the "no tool method". ruclips.net/video/qodr0uzEF4I/видео.html
YES! I just made this comment too! I remember forgetting my combo all the time but it didn't matter because it was useless! Was yours one of the light chain ones with the colored plastic sleeves over it and the cheap chrome job on the steel?

I've had a lock of this same series sitting in the house for nearly 4 years. Someone accidentally changed the combo. With this video I opened it in about the same amount of time as the demo! Thanks for the great content.
And lazy criminals. They go for the easy break-in. If you have a lock, even a bad one, a lot of bad guys will just try the house next door. Most burglars aren't very bright. They just want enough for a fix ...
This video helped so much! We had a lock on our work gate and pretty sure someone changed the combo just to be a butt. So I watched this video and give it a shot and it worked! When I got it opened I automatically thought of Skyrim "lockpicking increased to 2"
Imagine if the government hired this guy to go on a secret mission to get somewhere locked and as soon as he gets to the lock he starts telling his team the whole history about the lock
The core thing to remember is that you do need to put pressure on the hinge to trigger the “open/engage lock” sequence before you can feel the difference if you have the right number. If you can move the wheel while putting pressure on the hinge, then the lock is not in “open/engage open” mode. Once you figure it out, it will make sense. If you still don’t understand, watch 7:27 over and over until you find a number and you can compare. This is the key to understanding this lock
prison locks are easy to pick. except the mechanisms need such force that is it near impossible without the massive blocky key due to age/rust inside. then all the doors have security locks on them for normal doors.
@@travisleeds2910 The lock is an obvious symbol. If you see a door while getting to know your new workplace, you may open it. If you see a lock on it, well, nevermind then.
I love this channel it both scares me and informs me at the same time. I am scared because it seems that most locks are just useless and that I need a $500 lock for my school locker. But in reality locks are there just to deter the common scum bags. If they really wanted to get in they would get in by other, possibly violent means. It is very educational for selecting locks for specific needs and has eased my mind so that if I do lose a key it's not the end of the world. I have bought a basic pick kit and training lock just so I can independently get myself out of trouble.
a lock (even a top end one) is only as strong as the rest of the securing structure. it ain't gonna do nothing against weak hinges or an easily damageable material. security is always about deterring people, not about making it impossible to get in
Locks have always worked well enough to deter 99.999% of people who don't carry a bolt cutter around with them. These videos are a game-changer -- not in a good way.
Locks are merely a deterant. The whole point is to delay entry for long enough that a person would think twice about messing with it. Getting caught picking a lock is not a good look. That's why it's just easier to find something that isn't locked and target that instead. Almost every single lock on the planet is defeatable in less than 1 minute.
One day, years ago when I had nothing to do I figured out that you can pick cheap number locks by pulling on the shackle and feeling the resistance on the wheels. That turned into a fun bet at a pub I used to frequent where I claimed I could open a number pad lock blindly in 20 seconds and then almost failed with 1 second left. Yesterday someone recommended your channel to me and it is enlighting and entertaining to see how these locks actually look inside and what different companies try to keep lock pickers out. So much to learn! :-)
The way you opened it is the most common trick in the book, we used to have these combination locks in school like 13 years ago and did it for fun during breaks. Right before you said there was a easier way to open it i told myself (please don't tell me he's gonna pull down in the bar and then try to roll the numbers) and then you did. Happy to see the same kind of trick still hasnt been fixed

For about a year, I've noticed an obviously-abandoned bicycle cable, along with this (newer) Master lock, wrapped around a parking lot light pole down the street from where I live. Two evenings ago, right before a snowstorm, I decided to watch your video a second time, then go try my luck. I didn't time myself but, for sure, had the lock open in *under one minute.* I'd never successfully decoded a lock before, and felt a bunch of different feelings -- surprised, proud, concerned (about the value of any of the locks we own). I'd say my predominant emotion was tickled, though. I really enjoyed it. I'm now looking forward to my next opportunity to thwart some lock maker.
What really sucks is I had a high end abloy lock on my storage unit, and out of all the locks that where cut, only the people using the higher end locks had theirs Broken into. All the cheap $6 puck style locks where left alone.
I work security at a construction site and they have two of these at each gate here and this helps alot because the workers who don’t have their equipment sitting on site over night are always leaving the back gate open.
I've never thought of locks in terms of logic gates. Now I can't think of it any other way. Thanks for teaching me this morning. I'm also going to have to buy another lock.
It was a redesign to make it cheaper. It's now a cheap, Chinese lock made of zinc. It looks like one blow with a sledge hammer would knock it open. No padlock gives you real security anymore, anyway. I'm going to keep using my old 175 without worry someone will have the tool to pick it just to break into my gym locker.
This is fantastic! I work in the oil and gas industry as a utility locator, and this is the lock used on most gate entrances to the lease sites.. and VERY often, there's bad communication and we arrive to sites without being given the code. I'm gonna try this next time it happens. To be clear, we have permission to access these sites, and the gates are simply vehicle gates to keep trespassers out, so typically in these situations, if the road isn't too long, I will have to just load up all of my gear and crawl over the gate, instead of pulling our vehicle in with our equipment and personal belongings. As long as this doesn't wreck the lock, nobody will have an issue with it..... and in fact, I guarantee, the fact that we won't have to come out a second time after rearranging the day, costing the company hundreds to thousands of extra dollars, would be greatly appreciated.
Masterlock: spends 10 years and 15 million dollars on redesigning their patent combo lock to be impregnable LL: ends Masterlocks career in 30 seconds with zero budget.
it's so strange. im sure Masterlock must have people that specialize in lockpicking that test their locks so either they need to fire the guy that does that or they need to start listening to his advice.
8:07: I thought he was going to say: “Let’s do that one more time, that took probably as long as it would take someone who knows the combination to open the lock.”
I went to Home Depot tonight and noticed they had these locks securing their power tools. My first thought was, wow, I could open one of these locks in under a minute. Then I noticed one which was unlocked and laying on the shelf with the combination in plain view. The combination was the store number, and I would bet that every lock in the store was set to that same combination.
To me it's incredible how this design works, and it feels like IRL programming using physical matter as your media. Just a different kind of existence.
I’m a truck driver I was locked inside a parking lot with a gate using this exact lock. This video helped me get out to make on time delivery. Thank you.
Attila Asztalos Doesn't matter if it's a button, a handle, the shackle or a permanent spring. You need something to open the lock once the combination is dialed. Now some locks prevent feeling around under tension.
6:30 is where the magic starts. I used this to break my car out of a locked parking lot today! Note: if the lock is older, the loose numbers won't be as easily noticeable as in the video. Instead, I cycled 1-3 times per wheel and picked the relatively loosest number. In each of the four wheels, one number stood out relative to the other numbers on a per-wheel basis. A loose number on one wheel might be tight if compared to another wheel.
The advantage of needing a tool to reset the lock means there is no way to accidentally (or maliciously) reset the lock during normal operation. Say you have a canoe rental secured with padlocks and chains, the customer can pick up their canoe at any time, but you just have to go there at some time before the rental period starts to set the combination to the right number, and remove they keyed lock.
Poor Master Lock, they come out with this New design that they were probably all excited about. I imaging them all patting each other on the back saying something about how unpick-able the new mechanism is, just to hear LPL in the background say its actually way easier to open without a pick now xD
Used to work at home depot n figured out this method while being bored at the returns register (someone returned a lock with the code changed). Happens it was the same lock used all over the store so i made learned all the combos throughout the store.. Also used a paperclip to open certain locks n my supervisors didn't care cause Then they didnt have to open them for me every time

Amazing! There has been this huge cable wrapped around a tree near me for well over 1 year & with this exact lock on it & after watching the 1st 8:06 of this video I walked outside & opened it within 3 mins & have never "picked" a lock in my life until right now.
I was on a walk with my dog and as we were going through a field, found a master lock security cable with the 875 locked onto one of the loops. I brought it home, watched your video and easily had the lock opened and then changed the code. I am sure I will put this to good use. Thanks, great video and super helpful.

@@lockpickinglawyer I believe you can also do this decode on cylindrical cycle combination locks. Or at least it used to be possible. How about a video on that?
This lock is a SHAME !!!! Today, i went to an hardware store and started playing with these "#7 security level" padlocks. Within 7 minutes, i opened FOUR of them !!!! With a such level of crapness, i was highly tempted to change their combination before putting them back to the shelf, but i controlled myself...
ve2zzz You showed greater restraint than I would have. I would have changed every single one of them, and only because they don't need to sell such cheap crap to folks who don't have a clue.
Master Lock in the last 10 to 15 years have been sacrificing quality for faster cheaper construction and are only just now being forced to redesign their locks after much bad press online, I work in a major hardware chain Master Locks are often overpriced and as shown here less than stellar quality in design if not the materials which are pretty good and they look nice which is why the still sell today! Master Lock on average while not all easy to break, bypass or hack are only worth about 1/3 of the price in my Country Lockwood are cheaper and better quality although still not unhackable!
I once opened a padlock within just one minute, winning the contest, and rewarded with a bag of cookies. Fun game. In this game, they give you the numbers of the combination, but not the order of the numbers. I quickly recognized it as a statistical mathematical problem of running all of the permutations. With 3 numbers, there are 3 choices for the 1st number, 2 for the 2nd, 1 for the third, or 3! (3 factorial = 3 • 2 • 1) combinations to try. Only 6 possible combinations? A brute force (just try them all) approach should be achievable within the allotted minute. My 4th attempt opened the lock. Presumably in real security situations, they would not be so generous with the clues.
Locks like this keep out lazy criminals who are drivin by opportunism. Alot of petty thiefs dont watch videos like these, and dont have the concentration or discipline to sit there and feel for open gates. Most of the time they will bring bolt cutters and try to brute force through, which is very noisy and takes time unless your very fit. Plus legally, cutting a lock pretty much damns you if your fingerprints are on it. So these locks have uses, just dont use locks like these to secure money or important assets, buy a safe
I bought an 875 four days ago...somehow, after using it for two days, the combination I set no longer worked. I found your video and was able to see that two of the numbers had changed. Now it works fine, thanks to YOU. I am grateful.
I found one of these locks on the ground last year. I hadn't yet seen this video but I had seen others of yours so I picked it up, interested to see if I'd be able to open it eventually. My girlfriend wanted to know why I picked up an apparently useless lock and I jokingly told her, "watch, I have a magic touch with combination locks", and I put some tension on the shackle and started working the dials. To my surprise I had the lock open in about 20 secs or so! My girlfriend was impressed and also wondered how and why I could do such a thing. I assured her that I was not a cat burglar and that it was merely an interesting mental exercise. I still have the lock.
Oh my goodness. Thank you so much I bought a set of new locks and messed up setting the first combination. Spent ages trying to get it to lock. Your video saved me purchasing another set. Brilliant!!

When I was a junior supply chain manager, I got slammed for asking the simple question: "Nice that you saved $.003 per unit, but is it better?" Fun times.
I just used this technique on a lock a coworker found. It took a little while, much longer than you showed, but it worked in the end. I need to get "the feel" down. Thank you so much. I work in security, so it may come in handy once again. Who would have thought a 5 year old video would come in handy?😊
There's something so satisfying in watching him take a crap on these products, not in a negative way, but because he finds things that the designer has not thought about.
They certainly knew about this. This sort of thing is common in number locks. It's depressing to see that apparently their older version didn't have this major issue, but the new one does.
Omg this worked! You totally saved me. My car got locked in a parking garage on New Year’s Eve…20 miles from home. I have gotten sucked into watching your videos and after watching this one, I ordered one of these locks. The first time, it took me about 15 or 20 minutes to pick it. The second time, a few minutes. I fear this is a gateway into tumblers! Thanks for these great videos and potentially leading me into a new hobby.
This video helped me today. Unfortunately my coworker and dear friend passed away a few weeks ago and he was in control of a locker that was holding some parts we needed today for work. This lock was what was used to secure the locker and only my recently departed friend knew the combo. I remembered watching this video a few months ago and I dug through my RUclips history to pull it back up to refresh my memory of how to decide this lock. It helped me to decode and open the lock without having to open a work order to get the facilities folks to come cut the lock off. That could take weeks before they'll get around to coming out to cut the lock. I don't really pick locks but there's something I enjoy about watching your videos and today it helped me at work and also kinda sorta reconnected me with an old friend.
No one can explain why but I definitely gained an immense amount of satisfaction from unlocking these two locks I forgot the combination to!! Didn't know the combinations and they were locked together, ended up being different and they were so worn I had soak them in lubricant to finally feel the difference. Thank you for the information hope everyone is willing to be honest with it.
Whaddya mean no one can explain why? You're getting a high because your brain has gotten a workout. You've learned a skill and successfully used it, hence the endorphins. That's basically one of the two reasons people DIY, the other being the similar rush you get when you actually invent something (as opposed to successfully using a skill). And don't tell me there's a third reason of saving money, if you bill yourself for the time used, and count materials and tools, DIY is usually costlier than outsourcing.
The thing that most peeps are not saying, is this took him a WHILE over keyed locks, due to it being a numbers game instead of a skill. I'll still use some 20 dollar lock from wherever, as they will always ONLY be deterrents, but this took him a while. That's all that matters to some security.
Time to decode/pick is much less important than skill required imo if it takes 5 minutes to unlock a lock but you can master the skill in 2 minutes then that lock is way less secure than a lock that takes 30 seconds to pick, if you have hours of skill and specialized tools
on the contrary, he's a master lock picker with years of experience and dozens of tools to chose from. A combination lock like this can be broken into by any old person, just look at all the comments by people saying they found/owned one of these locks, didn't have the code, and then got into it within a matter of minutes. Your average criminal isn't going to have lock picks and years of lock picking experience but they will have hands and a will to get in

They were so easy to open it was ridiculous, you would just pull on them as you turned the combo lock and feel for a click to get the correct number.
@@chopholtz4950 you say these things as though they are facts. But they are not. They are just your opinions.
Where I live there is a saying: A lock is there for the honest people. It is a rough translation but hope it makes sense.

Garth Goldberg Have you tried padlocks from countries that still care about their locks?

And when you think all they would have had to do was make sure you can't tension the mechanism by pulling on the shackle...
Attila Asztalos Doesn't matter if it's a button, a handle, the shackle or a permanent spring. You need something to open the lock once the combination is dialed. Now some locks prevent feeling around under tension.

A loose number on one wheel might be tight if compared to another wheel.

You showed greater restraint than I would have.

After watching this channel for several months, I've come to the conclusion that all locks are useless.
not all. some abus locks are great as most of the thieves doesn't have the skills required to open them. plus some are pretty much unbreakable.
Thieves.
But the girlfriend took off..?
Real question: Do you still have the girlfriend?
no, he didn't lock that down
You sound like a guy who would make up bullshit stories on the internet to impress 12 year olds. This did not happen.
But did you get laid that night
Oh Master Lock..jack of all locks...Master of none it seems.
Nice.
The LJN of locks, anyone know the reference?
AVGN
idk idk AVGN YES!
There should be a Skyrim mod that makes every master rated lock terrible
"...And that's actually inaccurate."
Oh shit, LPL calling people out. He said it nicely, but there was still shade thrown lmao
Oh my goodness. Thank you so much I bought a set of new locks and messed up setting the first combination. Spent ages trying to get it to lock. Your video saved me purchasing another set. Brilliant!!
I’m not sure why master hasn’t hired the LPL to help them build a good lock.
It is much easier to “break things” than build them.
@@drews784 I’m not sure that your statement is relevant to mine.
@@mind.your.own.beeswax5416 It's totally relevant lol. It's exactly relevant to what you posted. It is, in fact, more relevant than anything else that anyone could've posted. How high were you when you posted that reply
@@Q8_BoRashed dear LovesTheSpooge77 I disagree. We’re “decoding without any tools”. Where does anyone mention anything like “break things”? And wtf is high about hiring lpl to point out the errors. I think someone has taken too much cough syrup before bedtime again.

Amazing... An engineer at Master has some explaining to do to management.
Smeado Unless you're talking about the removal of the bypass, you assume a good faith attempt on the company's part to make an actual security product where there isn't exactly a mountain of evidence for it.
Management doesn't care about security

Fun times.
I just used this technique on a lock a coworker found. It took a little while, much longer than you showed, but it worked in the end. I need to get "the feel" down. Thank you so much. I work in security, so it may come in handy once again. Who would have thought a 5 year old video would come in handy?😊

There's something so satisfying in watching him take a crap on these products, not in a negative way, but because he finds things that the designer has not thought about.
...yet which the designer SHOULD have thought about. A lock has ONE JOB.
They certainly knew about this. This sort of thing is common in number locks. It's depressing to see that apparently their older version didn't have this major issue, but the new one does.
when you call the lawyer to get out of jail, and he comes with a lock pick...

Bold of you to assume he *needs* a lockpick
Omg this worked! You totally saved me. My car got locked in a parking garage on New Year’s Eve…20 miles from home. The guy at the front desk refused to call his manager to give me assistance and said I could wait until 11. (8 hours). So I googled this video and was able to unlock the gate and get home! Thank you thank you
I don't know nothing about locks, but i love the way he makes rhe videos and kinda makes me relax and it's also mindblowing/interesting ro see robust looking locks being picked so easily
Wow. A master lock one doesn't need a zip tie, chicken bone or stern look to open. Thanks LPL!
Hmm... now I’m trying to think of ways to open this with a 🍗
LockPickingLawyer There's been another of their combination locks which could be decoded with a flashlight or good eyes by looking for the gates.
I don't know, I still feel like giving this lock a stern look for a different reason
I'm sorry for your loss
Time to decode/pick is much less important than skill required imo
if it takes 5 minutes to unlock a lock but you can master the skill in 2 minutes then that lock is way less secure than a lock that takes 30 seconds to pick, if you have hours of skill and specialized tools
on the contrary, he's a master lock picker with years of experience and dozens of tools to chose from. A combination lock like this can be broken into by any old person, just look at all the comments by people saying they found/owned one of these locks, didn't have the code, and then got into it within a matter of minutes.
Your average criminal isn't going to have lock picks and years of lock picking experience but they will have hands and a will to get in

In fact, Masterlock has done *one* lock that is pretty good: Master Lock Speed Dial. For details, see toool.nl/images/e/e5/The_New_Master_Lock_Combination_Padlock_V2.0.pdf - the only real vulnerability is the screws in the bottom which should be glued in or otherwise modified not to be easily openable: ruclips.net/video/1VCi66dLLqs/видео.html

Note that you have to use combination/sequence longer than 4 moves or this lock is easy to open due all sequences can be tried.
