If a good lock takes five minutes to decode, and you want to protect something for ten hours, all you have to do is put 120 locks on it. The only downside is that you'll have to dial in 120 combinations when you want to use the thing, and you'll have to close and scramble 120 locks when you're done. If you bring two buddies, though, it becomes a more manageable 40 locks each. But a thief can also bring two buddies, and then they can decode 120 locks in 3 hours and 20 minutes.
You probably need a spreadsheet to remember all the combinations of the 120 locks (because using the same combinations several times would make it easier to crack every lock). Now they just need to hack your computer/phone and find the spreadsheet 😁
2 factor authentication....on top of the best combination lock money can buy, u also want to install a fingerprint reader and iris scanner and a sms authentication all of which must be completed within 60 seconds otherwise a massive electric current will course through the bike shocking any rider on it.
Back in college for some reason there were a bunch of abandoned bike locks on a bike rack. I noticed them on several occasions until eventually the school put notes on them stating they would be cut off if not claimed. For some reason I took it upon myself to try to crack the combination locks, realizing now I used the same method the author did. After a few days of practice I was able to crack most of them and claim several free bike locks!
There's a design solution to this, but it makes the lock a lot more cumbersome. You need a switch that runs down the outer groove of the internal rotating gears. This switch needs to lock into the loop of the lock so that you basically it locks the lock's loop in place when it's disengaged from the combination gears. You end up with a lock that lets you either try to open the lock by pulling the loop, or lets you rotate the numbers, but not both at the same time.
That's always the deal when it comes to basically any lock - if you want a lock that is going to be easy for you to open in a few seconds, then an experienced lockpicker can probably crack it open in little to no time. If you're willing to deal with a more cumbersome and inconvenient lock that takes longer to open then it's probably going to be a lot harder for an experienced lockpicker to get it open too. You just have to pick the right type of lock for your purposes - for example if you're just locking your bike up at the shopping centre while you go shopping a simple combination lock that is easy to carry and doesn't have a key that can be lost is ideal in my opinion. It makes the act of taking your bike look extremely suspicious because they either have to break the lock or pick the combination while people can probably see them doing it rather than just being able to hop on and ride away without raising suspicion if it was unlocked. If you wanted to secure your bike in a more isolated area for a longer period of time then I'd go for one of those big heavy iron U shaped locks with the funny keys - the only way your average thief is going to get a good iron U lock off is with an angle grinder, because to pick them open requires special tools that most people don't have and wouldn't know how to use even if they did have them.
Most locks are designed to deter thieves, not stop them. If somebody really wants to get past a lock, they can and will. However, the longer they are delayed the more chance of them getting caught or simply giving up for an easier job. A nomination lock could still be useful when paired with contemporary locks or further combination locks. Remember, the more of a hassle it is for you, all the more hassle it will be for any perspective thieves.
Yeah the bike lock is probably actually pretty secure if you see someone just pulling on the lock and keeps turning the dials people will probably get 𝘀𝘂𝘀picious
I used to skip school assemblies a decent amount because I was often late to school and didn’t want to be singled out for being late, so I’d bunk out in the locker rooms where everyone kept their books and bags, with almost everyone locking their lockers with combination padlocks. I decided to pass those empty half hours by attempting to crack their codes, figuring this method out by myself when I noticed some dials were stiffer to turn, and eventually found myself succeeding every single time within 90-120 seconds. I made it into a challenge to myself to see how many locks I could crack by the end of assembly. My personal best was 22 locks in that 30 minute assembly period. I remember waiting for everyone to come back to the locker rooms and slipping into the crowd afterwards so no one suspected me, and everyone walking in and wondering how their lockers were mysteriously open XD
I wasn't able to feel the moving/less moving parts, so I went for a more brute force but about just as long way for the fake gated lock: I checked out where all the gates where for all the wheels. Did a little table of the combination this left me with (a 4 wheel lock, 3 wheels with 5 gates, 1 wheel with 1 gate, 125 possibilities) then I just tested them all. Finding the gates, making the table, and testing took me about seven minutes
To be fair, I use a combination lock almost entirely in the gym locker rooms. If a prospective thief is trying to get into my locker, 10min fiddling with the lock at an awkward angle is going to be way too suspicious to be able to pull it off. That’s the point of these locks, not unbreakable security, but to make it difficult enough that getting away with it is unlikely. In 10min there’s not only a good chance other guests or staff will get suspicious but also there’s a good chance I’ll return to the locker in that time
I've been fiddling around with combination locks for a week or so, I have a 3 and 4 combination lock that is typically used in gym lockers and I can open a 4 combination one in 40 seconds or so if I keep messing it up, and 10 seconds if I get lucky. Also when you lock something with it it's way easier to open compared to what he does in the video. You don't have to use your hand to tension the shackle, you just pull it towards yourself so it tensions itself. Again, I have zero experience with locks and after a week of playing around with it I can get it open in 15-20 seconds average. Just so you know it won't take 10 minutes. Combination locks are especially garbage, other than bicycle locks which are kinda ok because you have to use a lot of force to tension it, it is way more of a hassle than a regular combination lock.
Fantastic...several other RUclipss didn't help, but after a few tries I got my lock open and reset! The turning of all three dials at the same time and some adjustments got the lock open. Thank you very much.
This was great! We had a bike combo lock that we had long forgotten the combination to. This video helped me to finally get that thing unlocked and remember the combination. Only problem now is that I have lost all faith in the lock being able to protect my bike anymore. So, thanks....?
If somebody wants to steal your bike, they are gonna do it. No matter what lock you use. The only thing locks on bikes actually prevent is some drunk dude taking it because he just wants to go home.
the one with pulling and feeling the "klick" is actually something I figured out at 12 years old, roughly 30 years ago, when i had forgotten the combination of my bike´s lock... interesting that nothing has changed since then :)
Great video. I just bought the exact same lock as that red one. There are several numbers which appear to bind the next number or none that bind it depending on how hard you try. I've tried for 15 mins to crack it and my thumb is so sore I had to stop. It's not as easy as it looks, you really need to learn the 'feel'.
Funny thing, when I was younger, my parents locked the devices in a bag and put a 3 pin lock on it. I tried every combination from 001 to 888 until I found it out😂
I am definitely going to try this out. You did not try a rotating dial, though. You know the ones most people use for school. Also, 8 mins to crack is great if you are not a criminal, but most criminals want their crime done in seconds. So, this is helpful if you forget your combination of have to open a lock for a forgetful friend.
It is more about spreading awareness of how easy it is to pick this type of lock so that people would find another one more secure. I mean, if you did watch the video, it takes literally nothing to open this type of lock.
I used to use a brass 4 gate combo lock at the gym for years. Then I watched a similar video and decided to see if I could open it without looking. First time I ever had attempted to crack open any padlock and it took me about a minute, just by feel and slight pull pressure on the bar. I was stunned and went and got me a quality keyed padlock.
@@user-wv8xw9dr2c they put combination locks on unused lockers and other things that sixth graders always try and get into them and can never figure it out
1:07 it is so easy that I knew how to do that about 20 years ago without any picking knowledge, without tutorials, I just needed the combination for my bike and I forgot the number. Is very intuitive.
I once had a really cheap lock one of my friends gave me, since they got a stronger lock for whatever they were doing. (No, they didn’t tell me the combination) I used to fiddle a lot with it in my classes and after a while realised that all 4 of the combination wheels [or whatever u call it] would sometimes be stuck or be harder to turn on specific numbers. So I put in the combination of these numbers and it opened. I just sat there like *bruh*
Same here. I found the method myself but I thought it only worked on my lock. I got another lock and the method worked on it too, so I searched on the internet and I realized this is a real method to unlock locks. (my english is not good enough maybe I have some grammar problems)
Good video. Since I’ll be travelling soon, I read that baggage handlers are able to pick locks and steal. I was a bit dubious about a number lock, but if it takes a while to open, then the thief will move on to an easier one.
Well that no Lock is 100% secure is nothing new, it's more about how long it takes to open it. The longer the better, because the longer a thieve needs to open the lock the more heighten is the possibility that the thieve feels nervous and flees or gets caught in the act by someone.
@@neltymind not completely useless, would still keep people who are really lazy away. Or at least non thieves who haven't watched this video. I mean hell, even if you put your wallet in a desk drawer it still keeps most people away Vs leaving it in the open. How many people are going to try to open every single desk drawer just in case a wallet is there. Even the tiniest deterrence like opening a drawer that isn't yours puts off 99 percent of people from bothering if the reward is much less than the risk.
Everyones talking about such difficult locks but all you need to do is make your lock more annoying to crack than someone else's. If you're a thief and you see 2 bikes, one with a normal lock and the other bike that has 2 locks, youre gonna steal the bike thats easier to steal.
Combination locks are the easiest locks to open. I did an escape room puzzle with my wife, halfways through we got stuck with the clues. I found a small combination lock on a door, "picked" the lock you know by keeping pressure on it while turning the numbers until I got the correct code. We ended up skipping so much of the puzzle, it was so difficult to explain how we defeated the game with a half hour left🤣
This video's intent: Warning people not to secure their property with something that's easily broken The video's actual result: Teaching thieves how to break locks.
To the person reading this : _You are beautiful and amazing ❤ stay safe_ ✌💖 *My dream is to hit 10k subs, any help is much appreciated* its totally fine if you don't want to ☺, i appreciate that too!
I found a 5-number combination lock on the street and wanted to solve it. Clicked on your video and at 4:28 it was open. Great explanation and shame on those "locksmiths".
I also bought and picked the first lock, and i want to add that it is super easy the first time, but after picking it 10 times or so, it started getting more difficult because the dials are a little smoothened and dont klick as well. I am pretty sure it also goes for other locks.
Last time: I learn how to open a lock without the key This time: I learn how to crack a combination lock blindfolded Next time: I learn how to rob a bank without using my arms
I had a cheap bike lock when i was a kid and i figured this out because the dials were so floppy they were actually loose when they were on the right number
Genius Mike! My wife forgot the code of her lock. So we put it in a drawer for 3 years now, jaja. I saw this video and the 5 numbers lock was open in 4 minuts with the indirect method!! Thank you man!
Determined thief will just carry bolt cutters. Having a lock, whether combination one or whatnot is more to discourage potential random theft done by a person that been just passing by. Safes can also be "easily" cracked, just need tools and skill. In the end, nothing can be 100% secure
This was my immediate thought about the bike lock. What you want from such a lock is for it to take longer to crack then break, and try to put your bike somewhere open and with foot traffic.
How about this type of combination safe!! If you put in the wrong combination from the start the thing will freaking blow up in your face and you will either die, or be a hideous freak for life. So "trying to find the combination" like He would be doing would get him killed. That WILL stop any thief. Something like that can be designed and probably has been. I've heard there are government safes like this.
LPL usually doesn't even need 5 minutes for an `impossible` lock. That ABUS keeping you for 30 minutes and then another eight after restarting seems like a pretty decent lock to me, one that will cause the majority of occasional thieves to give up and walk away in fear of drawing attention.
Firstly I need to congratulate on what is a truly excellent video. That took you a long time to film and edit! However... for anyone else reading this, this is all about content. These techniques are in no way representative for all combination padlocks. On top of that, the mastery of cracking a lock is not purely learning ABC. The more you do it, the more you get a feel for it, and by making this video and testing tonnes of locks to find the ones he wants to film, Mike will have in fact become quite sensitive to lock cracking mechanisms. If he then went away for a month or two and came back he wouldn't have the same luck without going back through the processes. It's a known thing in lock picking circles. You need to stay current in your "feel". The point about false gates are valid and ABUS, being perhaps the best lock manufacturer, they add different false systems to their locks. You can't just crack the 165 series and think you can then crack all combination locks or even all ABUS combination locks. It just doesn't work that way. So to summarise.... Mike has made an amazing video and I love the illustrations of the mechanisms. Amazing. But he's also chosen a few locks which work for the point hes making, therefore making it appear all combination locks can be cracked with these three methods. It's content creation and hes got 6 million views from this video and made $$$$ from it. Video creation and production 10/10 Validity of content in the real world 3/10
the best part about it is when you feel a lock open like that it doesnt really look much different than when you actually know the combination as opposed to someone who is using lock picks or grinding tools
You just made me think. If i were to setup my own company selling different safety and locking mechanisms, a good way to start and market yourself would by just going door2door shops and different locations and telling the owners: if i manage to open your lock in under 2 minutes, you buy one of mines. Most places use the easiest cheapest locks, it is like a gold mine waiting out there for you.
Easy to do when the lock is in a convenient position where it's relatively easy to apply just the right pull on the shackle while tweaking the dials. Try it when the lock is not in a convenient position for example when it's wrapped around a bike and a bike stand and you're unable to rest your hands/elbows on something solid. Then you'll find it much more difficult to apply just the right amount of pull on the shackle and a precise gentle touch on the dials. It will be much more difficult to feel what's happening inside the lock so you won't easily know when the grooves and cutouts are aligning. Not saying it can't be done, just saying it's much more difficult and time consuming. My point is... when locking with a combination lock take a little time to think of how you can position the shackle and dials in a way that makes it difficult to grasp them and move them easily/precisely. When locking by bike I like wrapping the cable in a way that places the dials inside the wheel spokes
My combination lock is just for stopping my grandmother with dementia from eating all of my expensive ice creams, so I think it'll still be quite useful for my particular purposes.
@@bitsy__ To be clear, I do share them with her, but if I don't lock them up she'll go get one, eat it, hide the stick with leftover chocolate and ice-cream on it in her underwear draw, forget she's eaten one and then immediately go back and get another one. She'll then repeat this over and over again until she makes herself sick, completely soils her entire underwear draw with ice cream and chocolate, and leaves me with zero of my expensive ice creams for later.
Combination locks most likely have springs. And because spring spring, you can smack it. Some of the locks work differently, like on some locks, you need to pull the shacke up or down and them smack it. Fun fact, if you're using a Disecu combination lock, it can be opened with a Disecu combination lock.
I found an easier way to pick the bike lock when I forgot the pin to it. When you would turn the dial to the right number there would be a little gap between that dial and the one to the right of it.
All locks only ever delay a theft, anyone can get through with enough time and persistence. Thieves are not notably persistent tho and they will usually seek the most profit for the least time spent. You can bet they'll always take an unlocked bike over cracking your dollar store back to school sale combo lock.
I don't use locks as theft prevention, I use them as theft deterrent. As most people already know, given enough time, anyone can open or break a lock. Whenever I lock my bicycle for example, I try to lock it in an open location with a lot of traffic and just have the lock to slow the theft down so I have a higher chance of stopping it, aswell as the lock makes my bike less of a target then one without. If you're going to steal from me, I'm going to at least give you a challenge, you won't get it without some effort.
I recommend you to take a look at LockPickingLawyer. He makes laugh of all the locks out there, no matter how complex they are, picking within a minute. Most - within few seconds. You can learn few tricks about locks by him
My school has started to use partially electronic locks, the key has some sorta identifier and it beeps inside a correct lock and then allows it to turn, without that the lock wont turn at all And if the battery in the key dies youre fucked till its replaced
I figured this out years ago and opened a few locks with the exact same method. One funny one was the lock to the hot tub at work was replaced with a combination lock and while it took me a few minutes, I opened it, but then my colleagues thought I was a criminal lol.
Great video! thank you! There is another method to that works on many combo locks that you didn't try. If you use a flashlight and look very closely in hte gap between the dials and the lock you can actually see the gate, SO when you have found the gate on all dials when they are facing you, just turn them 5 steps to get the gates in the right place. try it! :)
This is all you need in a padlock: Ball bearings to prevent shimming and security pins to prevent common instant opening methods like raking. Some amateurs may still be able to manually pick it, but it might take them quite a while, and even an expert would need at least 30 seconds to manually set all the pins, possibly longer. I imagine if a thief is messing with your lock for more than a couple of minutes, they're going to leave before they get caught! Look for something easier...
I have a combination lock with a mechanism that is none of the above: is the Forclaz cable lock by Travelsentry, and since it works in a completely different way i couldn't use any of the tricks you suggested to open it, because the part that "locks in" is not connected with the combination. The code serves because when is correct allows an inner slider to move and put the ending metal ball of the cable lock in an alcove that is otherwise unaccessible. So, since only the slider is what is controlled by the combination there is no direct way to interact with the teeths separately one from another. You should try that!
Thanks man! After watching this video I was finally able to find the combination of my bike lock, I had entered a random number and forgot about it a long time ago, but I used the indirect method and it worked in the 3rd attempt :D

I recently found a lock exactly like the red one in a park and I’ve been wanting to open it so much! This helps loads!!!!
Well that no Lock is 100% secure is nothing new, it's more about how long it takes to open it. The longer the better, because the longer a thieve needs to open the lock the more heighten is the possibility that the thieve feels nervous and flees or gets caught in the act by someone.
All security is just a matter of deterrence
If we're only talking seconds, the lock is completely useless, though.
Why am I not able to open my lock using these methods?
@@neltymind not completely useless, would still keep people who are really lazy away. Or at least non thieves who haven't watched this video.

Determined thief will just carry bolt cutters. Having a lock, whether combination one or whatnot is more to discourage potential random theft done by a person that been just passing by. Safes can also be "easily" cracked, just need tools and skill. In the end, nothing can be 100% secure
If he gets pulled over, he's gonna have a real hard time making an excuse for driving/walking around town at night with a pair of bolt cutters
It can be if you stay inside the safe with a glock on hand
@@QuantumEffectResidue bruh, you are literally thinking of harming somebody just for a mere theft.
LPL usually doesn't even need 5 minutes for an `impossible` lock. That ABUS keeping you for 30 minutes and then another eight after restarting seems like a pretty decent lock to me, one that will cause the majority of occasional thieves to give up and walk away in fear of drawing attention.
Unless they have a mini lightsaber.
Video creation and production 10/10
Validity of content in the real world 3/10

"This guy is massive but weak."
Hi, that's me.
so 99% of people dont know how to do this, until videos like this are made. thanks for helping the thieves

I found an easier way to pick the bike lock when I forgot the pin to it.
When you would turn the dial to the right number there would be a little gap between that dial and the one to the right of it.
The purpose of that kind of lock is just to delay the theft since it will took a lot of time to crack the numbers.
during a robbery every second counts
All locks only ever delay a theft, anyone can get through with enough time and persistence. Thieves are not notably persistent tho and they will usually seek the most profit for the least time spent.
