(1511) Airbnb Locks: Losers 1, 2 and 3 (JUNK!)

  • In video 1510 I take a look at 3 of the most popular Airbnb locks and all turned out to be losers (and junk!). 1 design for all 3 - all identical except the paint, price and number of stars in their Amazon ratings. What little trust I had in the Amazon rating system evaporated after looking at these locks.

    The $18 box had five stars because it was cheapest.
    Remember, these stars are awarded by Amazon customers. That's like asking the wino down on the corner to recommend a good Chardonnay.

    Once a guest has access to the key they can make a copy anywhere. You need a disposable key fob/swipe card for entry or a combo deadbolt instead.

      Well, not Medeco. You can try Kevo Smartlock and give guests a smartphone ekey, but as they are highly unreliable your guest will be fuming about not being able to get in.

      The keypad on smart locks can be configured with a temporary pin that expires after x amount of entries or hours. This is good for service workers or domicile sharing.

      Any residence that doesn't cover glass doors and windows with rolling shutters when nobody is around doesn't warrant anything better than a Kwikset lock to secure it. A rock from the garden will allow a burglar to gain access through a glass door faster than the house can be unlocked with a key.

    When we were running an AirBnB for family we used an electronic lock on the door, set a "temporary" combination (the lock allowed you to set a timeout for X days) which we provided to the guest.
    Seems like a really bad idea to give your guests access to a physical key, especially if it's not a controlled key...

    Then they get rain water in them and you need pliers to open them. Trust me I went to a place which had one like this but it was raining and the wheels were so stiff I needed to use a pair of pliers to set the wheels and pull the lever. So if you want to make this more secure just stick it in a bucket of salt water before you mount it

    Well, now you know how much five Chinese stars is worth. I have tried this on a couple of those style combo wheels and even I can do this, with no proper tools, using an exacto knife for a feeler.
    There is a big heavy padlock on our garbage bin. The city just spent thousands of dollars on locks for garbage dumpsters. I could not find where the wifely one put the combination, so I tried this. I was surprised at how easily and quickly I got past that huge heavy lock body with the crappy lock inside.
    Apparently, every sidewalk recycler in town knows that trick.
    Now they replaced it with a keyed mechanism. The key looks like a saw blade with perfectly equal ups and downs. A couple of nights ago, my wife took out some garbage but forgot the key. One of the aforementioned recyclers zipped the new lock open for her in a few seconds.
    Suddenly she thinks my new hobby is a fine hobby for an old boy to get into. :):)
    I think she met the guy who is teaching the other street inhabitants how to get into these things. He told her that he opens up the front doors on closed businesses, so that people can sleep in the empty stores when weather is bad. There are many closed businesses on my once fashionable shopping street, here in Canada.

    Sounds about right. Home owners trying to cash in with the cheapest possible expense. Odds on that people buying these for their airbnb also don't want to pay for proper short stay rental insurance, and then complain when their house gets trashed.
    Given the cost of their investment, you'd think they'd recognise they are not going to buy good security for $20.

    • @NicholasLittlejohn
      @NicholasLittlejohn 5 лет назад

      Airbnb people are not bright at all. Many rentals are illegal. Report them to your local 311.

    • @adamwest8711
      @adamwest8711 5 лет назад

      Yeah, most people who know anything about this stuff say spend an amount on security that is commensurate with that value of the item you’re trying to secure. Houses are pretty pricey, so $20 is pretty ridiculous. Unless they back it up with a decent alarm, then the key box is really just to stop someone strolling in.

  • @CDRaff

    You should take a look at the Wag!(dog walking service app) lockbox. They will send you one for cheap/free when you sign up for the service. Same BS combo lock, but it is the official lock box for the service. My roommate signed up for it so she could get someone to walk her dog if she got stuck at work, but after I saw the box they wanted her to use I wouldn't let her use the service and ended up just walking the dog myself.

    The Xool lock box's rating is heavily weighted to 5 stars because it is part of Amazon's Giveaway Program. Amazon will send free products to folks who will submit reviews on said products. Good reviews sell products on Amazon. The problem is folks almost universally give good revews so Amazon will continue to send them free things they can sell on ebay. I always check the bottom of an item page on Amazon to see if it is part of Amazon's Giveaway Program.

      I have a customer who set up a numerical keypad that he can change the codes over his phone, this then unlocks the door and turns off the alarm. the only way to lock the door from outside is by entering code again, thus making alarm come back on. So a new guest gets a new code today and its the same for however long they stay, after they leave he disables that code forever. seems to be working well for him, 6 properties for over 2 years and no real trouble. I cant imagine it being cheap, but anything worth having isnt cheap i guess.

    The quickest way into one of these boxes is to open the window then hit the bottom edge of the window downwards with a hammer, the pot metal of the door breaks at the corner between the bottom or the box and the back plate, the locking pawls disengage and the door falls open. I have done this (in a safe and legal way) and it worked first hit.

    The locks provided by Wag (the dog walking service) also have the same issue. However, their locks are so loosely fitted, you don't even need the filler guage. Just simply shine a flashlight into the dial (left of number) and you can see the flat spot. Line up the numbers and done. Took me less than 60 seconds to open one. I've contacted the company about it. They claim they're investigating the issue and state you don't have to use the locks provided so if anyone has that service, please don't use their provided locks.

    Digital key box with a 4-way dead bolt mounted to a wall is about the safest way to lock a key up short of trying to grind open the box to get into it. If you're smart, having a camera pointed at the key box would be an easy way to nab a thief in the event they tried such tactics.

    if you are wanting to retire so you can tape your funds i think you can draw the funds without retirement.
    the reason for retirement according to another video is because the mental state of old people can compromise their work performance.
    we viewers are ok with you taking longer to pick a lock that is what video editing is for to remove excessively boring stuff caused by degraded picking performance.
    i can understand a surgeon having to retire because mistakes can lead to malpractice conditions.
    but dont worry there is no such thing as malpractice for lock picking so you are safe from any lawsuits here.
    so i or we think you are safe to work to 100.

    Amazon doesn't rate the products they sell. The rating is done by the customers who buy the junk.
    But the real flaw is not just the keybox, it's the type of keys inside, unless they're the type keycopy services can't or won't reproduce without the matching security card.

  • @derekbroestler7687
    @derekbroestler7687 5 лет назад

    All cheap clones of the Masterlock 5401 combo wheel box.. which uses the same, unupdated design as the REALLY cheap boxes. (so yeah, bad)... I HATE leaving keys in lock boxes period, it's just bad policy, but customers demand it sometimes... The two that I've found that are a BIT more secure are the Kidde / Supra Keysafe and believe it or not the Masterlock 5422 series pushbutton key safe (same idea, just a bit larger)... They both are far from idea, and I'd take the Kidde over the Masterlock because it's a much tougher lock box to crack into by force with screwdrivers, etc.... but I still hate key safes on principle.
    I've missed out on quite a few episodes, are there any that you can recommend?

      If it is similar to this style with the combination wheels then its incredibly easy to break into. Most products by masterlock are terrible at being locks. However 99% of people don't know how to pick locks or get through combination locks so even garbage tier locks can act as a deterrent .
