- Several viewers have been asking me to review a motorcycle helmet lock, but this one is absolute junk! With the price of helmets (several hundred dollars) I'm surprised at how junky these locks are...

I think the point of this product is to keep someone from just running off with your helmet if your just running a quick errand or sitting at a restaurant I think this is still a good option
Exactly why I got it. More or less to have a place to hang the helmet off the ground and keep a passerby from just lifting it off the bike. I figure between a sweaty helmet and the 30 seconds it would add to stealing it will filter out a good portion of opportunity thieves.
You are 100% correct. Most of the dumb comments are from people who haven’t ridden a motorcycle in their life. These locks are only intended to deter petty crimes of convenience which is exactly what helmet theft is
I have a gun lock and it opens by just inserted the rake. It was a perfect match for the bitting. No raking needed just insert like a key and your done.
Usually helmets on Harley's are cheap skul hats. This is designed to prevent wind blowing the helmet away from the bike.
You better not leave it parked in a hurricane area though.
If it were designed just to keep it in place, wouldn't something like a push-pin be much more convenient than a lock.
It's a lock so it's meant to prevent it from being taken by someone who should not. Therefore it's really bad at it's job.
This is branded Harley but made by HD. It’s just a generic lock sold under a dozen different names. It bolts to any tubular frame so nothing at all specific to a HD bike. And wind has NOTHING to do with helmet locks. They are only intended to prevent a thief who would quickly grab an unlocked helmet but avoid even a tiny lock that showed them down. Carrying around your helmet can be a drag but you obviously don’t ride so I guess worrying about the wind makes more sense to you. Thanks for the chuckle
This is branded Harley but not actually made by HD. It’s just a generic lock sold under a dozen different names. It bolts to any tubular frame so nothing at all specific to a HD bike. I ride motorcycles, although not Harleys. Most of my riding friends don't even bother with locking their helmets. Helmet theft is very rare (where I ride) and pretty much limited to stupid kids just taking your helmet to be a PITA. It turns out that the market for stolen, smelly, used helmets is pretty low. So for the common risks you would face, this lock would actually be of value. Extra features wouldn't likely deter theft significantly more than this basic model does as most "stupid kids" don't travel with tools or picks of any kind.
If I'm in a marginal area, I just take my gear inside with me. I always try to park where I can keep an eye on my bike. I never leave the helmet outside overnight.
Most of the HD riders around here just wear a doo-rag and they keep that on their heads when they waddle into the bar after their 30 minute ride.
Sometimes even a poor lock is adequate to counter the realistic theft threat.
OK, the pin made me laugh, but that hex screw right on top is something to behold. WHY !!!!! Great review Bill. What else could you say...
Albert Lebel If it wasn’t junk and that was the only flaw in the design once you have the lock where you want you could use a punch to drive a ball bearing into Allen head and that would broadly solve the problem or at least make it slower to remove. I guess you have to have some way to attach the lock to the motorcycle or it won’t really work.
I use a chain, covered with a polyester protection sleeve to secure my helmet on my bike. It's closed with a pretty hefty and hard to pick Burg Wäechter Gamma 700. It's full face so the chain holds the helmet, not the strap. I never did trust those shitty, low-cost devices. Then again, I live in Switzerland and theft issues are pretty unusual but better to be safe than sorry. Thanks for the great vids Bill, have a good one. 😎
noa2000 it’s better to overdue the protection level.
Yep, that's exactly my point.
Have fun carrying around that heavy chain. I’ve been using these flimsy locks for 40 years without a stolen helmet
🤔 The shackle looks flimsy enough that with a chunky screwdriver you could simply twist the shackle open.
The shackle is laughable, probably non case hardened mild steel. Roll pin??... It's April 1 right?
I’d like to see what happens when you are trying to steal this helmet with a screwdriver and a bunch of bikers catch you. The lock is only designed to slow you down long enough to think about that eventuality
I think the brand logo "KY" is prob hinting at something there as prob after buying it you will feel scr.....
Ian Watson “KY” is the motorcycle version of “ML”
The helmet slides right off into your hands
I got an ad that was longer than the actual video, which speaks to how crap this lock is.
Costs $13.69
Provides less than 13.69s theft protection.
Most of the sport bikes come with a helmet lock from the factory. Most of them I've seen are welded to the frame.
This lock is designed as an add-on for a bike that DOESN’T come with a lock welded on by the factory. Increasingly common these days
Just put a big sticker on the helmet that says Warning Head Lice :P
This could bite you after somebody writes "...and scab" on.
I'd love to have this thing on my desk at work; I usually pick apart pens, but this looks way more fun!
i just placed the order for the same item, i not see your video before, any way might work for a quick run to the shop and keep the helmet, but after watching this video now i know what this lock is capable of and its weakness, thanks for doing this video
I don't think you needed to demonstrate how easy it is to open it's pretty obvious. You're the best
People don't usually look to steal a helmet. They typically go for the bike. If they did go for the helmet, they just cut the d-ring on the helmet and replace it before selling it somewhere else. I've been a motorcycle mechanic for a long time and have seen this happen. End state the lock is cheap but is a deterrent. Good video though.
I have the perfect solution I take my helmet with me, not to stop it from being stolen but to stop it from getting damaged or soiled.
This explains why the Harley guys don't wear helmets.
You have to wonder why they'd make such a foolish mistake by using a roll/tension pin.
I used to pick motorcycle ignitions with the "nail file" on small fingernail clippers.
My previous bike came with a build in lock, as did my first bike, but neither of them was really secure. I sometimes keep my helmet in my topcase, but those aren't very secure either.
That's why I usually just lug it around with me, or find a locker for the day etc. Helmets are too bl**dy expensive to leave it out there...
Then again, when using my 'pretty' but crap helmet....it's always just hung over my mirror, and noone has stolen it yet. Maybe because the design is a bit much :)
The first indicator should be the cost. $13 to secure a $200 + helmet... thats a no-go! That hex screw placement is unbelievable... thanks Bill!
That seems fine. The threat isn’t determined by retail cost of the item, it’s determined by resale value as a stolen item. And helmets have almost no resale value - you don’t know who wore it, whether it’s been in an accident before, and to repeat the first point, eww gross.
Not quite no resale value, but nothing commensurate with the price.
Just a couple of important points... Most Harley riders still don't use full-faced helmets, and still think required helmet use is an infringement on their rights. Locks like this are less for real securement of their tens of dollars helmet and more about making sure it isn't knocked off the bike onto the ground (where it might get dirtier).
Second, NO ONE who cares about their helmet or bike locks it to the outside of a bike. If the bike tips over, it'll crush the helmet, or birds can nest in it... Worse still, it makes the bike a more attractive target for theft, since helmets are required in most states and that bike already has one.
@Rod Rebman asphalt gets hot and the kickstand sinks, people bump into it and roll it off the stand, people push it over... It happens.
I was always interested in lock picking. I bought one of the credit card pick kits years ago and learned a good bit from it. Can you reccomend a pick set that is in the $30 range? Trying to improve my skills a little. Thanks!
Hey can you try picking Kale 164 cec it is a good pick resistant lock(but beware of counterfeit crap)
Seen helmet straps cut so i think its sufficient as for an expensive helmet left unattended well it deserves to be donated
Slotted screwdriver and twist (since it requires such a small turn angle)?
I wondered that as well.
great instructional video for thieves !
I would like to see more helmet lock if possible
My 1970's era Yamaha had a helmet lock built in. The problem is they can just unfasten the chin strap and thread it through, and walk off with your helmet.
TIL ball end screwdrivers are a thing. A few bucks from bunnings or wal-mart or any number of hardware stores and you can trivially bypass the locking mechanism. Heck, just wave a flat head screwdriver at the thing and it'll spring open!
It seems like the designers did not know they existed either, they probably assumed that the shackle prevents a wrench from reaching the screw.
Bill, do the manufacturers of these things ever come back to you, and maybe go "Oops, we screwed up, try this new version?" (!)
Keith Willis - I think Paclock did but that was more of a product test where they sent a possible model to Bill and LPL and then incorporated some of their improvement suggestions.
Still, goes to show that these lock companies do at least look at the reviews.
Only ones who do real locks and want to secure their busines do that kind of things.
@@adamwest8711 Let's put it this way - I am very much less likely to buy a lock from a company that does NOT do this! Thanks for the feedback...
@@XtreeM_FaiL I hear what you're saying. Sadly, there are too many "Master Lock" clones out there who don't really give a damn.
Keith Willis They make them because people buy them.
all my helmet locks are mounted under the edge of the seat on the actual frame
and not on the handle bars
I actually bought one of these but will never use it for its intended use I just bought it to fill the gap on the back of my subframe on the dt125r
This video would be more interesting if Bill was picking this lock on a Harley when the owner walked up with his buddies. In the real world petty thieves avoid anything that increases the odds of that scenario. That’s why these locks are EXTREMELY effective. Beating the crap out of a helmet they thief sounds like a fun afternoon.
Probably nice rust-free brass wafers. Can probably open it with a small screw driver and a slight twist.
That's OK Bill. Few Harley riders wear helmets unless required by law, so Harley won't sell many of these locks.
The major problem with attempting to lock up a helmet is the chin strap. A sharp pocket knife and you render a helmet worthless.
Master Lock must be branching out into the outdoor sports market.
Thats the POINT of locking the helmet by the straps. Its not to prevent malicious attacks, but theft bt people who want to sell a helmet. Its nearlt impossible to sell a cut strap helmet.
@@metamorphicorder The straps are replaceable.
Your comment is senseless on several levels: 1. A thief would not cut off the straps. They are actually very difficult to replace. That’s unnecessary effort and expense compared to stealing an unlocked helmet 2. This lock isn’t branded Harley Davison anyplace but on the packaging. It’s a generic accessory that can be used on ANY BRAND of bike with a tubular frame. So your assumptions about HD riders aren’t relevant to this equipment
Ways to make this lock safer? glue a BB in the screw socket. Loctite the screw. Replace the plug with a better plug design?
Many years ago, my helmet (Bell Star) was swiped by cutting the D-ring.
just got into the sport of picking and subscribed to your channel and i had a question about about about the pin spacing and wanted to know if the space between the pins is a standard or is it random
The pins are all equidistant from each other and are pretty much standard from mfgr to mfgr.
Check the fine print for "Master Lock" 😐
This is bad, even for them!
If the beating of the key is the same on both sides it doesn't necessarily mean the wafers are on one side, right?
Technically, you could have identical wafers both sides, but in practice, it's almost bankable that cost cutting means wafers only one side.
ruclips.net/video/Zap_VWcwtvk/видео.html This explains double wafer locks pretty well. I see your point, but I think I am not wrong.
I'd at least replace the screw with a security Torx or other tamper-resistant head, and then cover the head with good-quality black vinyl tape to make the method of attachment non-obvious. This kind of lock would normally be installed with the lock cylinder and hasp pointing DOWN, so picking would be less convenient and the screw head wouldn't be easily visible. Yes, the lock is cheap, but it is still better than hanging the helmet on the rear-view mirror.
Do as most bikers do carry an abloy lock . Or I use a wire rope lock to go threw the helmit visor opening ive seen the d rings cut off the helmit straps when they steel the helmit
That can’t be a wafer lock....holy shit. It’s a single sided wafer lock. It’s harder to get into my desk than it is to get into this lock!
A metal zip tie would be just as effective :D
Around here close to all HD riders have minimally legal cheapo beanie helmets that would not be worth stealing.
Watching this at a Disney world resort :P
Ha ha! And I published it from the Biltmore Estate Inn in Asheville, NC! Is EVERYBODY on vacation?
Well crap, I have an almost identical helmet lock on my Guzzi... will have to start researching better options
My (old0 Honda xls185 has a very small lock on the frame to hold the helmet. To attach the helmet, yuo need to push the helmet totally over this lock. So when I need to remove the helmet I need to twist my hand inside the helmet to use the key. The reason for saying this, is just and only that if the helmet is in the way, you can not pick it. Or not easily. And ah. Like others have said as well, there is not much of a market for smelly used helmets. B.t.w. I would not buy the one which you have shown if I needed a helmet lock. I would carry around a steel wire (4mm thick at least, depends on the price of your helmet) which has 2 eyes on both ends so I can loop it through the helmet and add it to the lock on the brake on the front wheel. I don't need an extra lock in that case.
WOW. That's pretty rubbish. Glad I saw this first.
Comment, would taking the pin out actually work? Looks to me like the locking lug would keep the shackle in. Rest of the flaws, yeah ouch.
Once the pin is out on one end the shackle will spin and pivot easily. This gives enough leverage than the flimsy lock mechanism will fail. There are several weak points in this locks design yet it is still EXTREMELY effective against theft. A petty criminal will simply avoid a locked helmet in favor of an unlocked one. Standing over somebody’s bike with a hammer and punch till is a great way to get your butt kicked
Took longer to remove from the blister pack 🔓
This video alone is enough, to make me very secure in thinking, people who steal things, are not lockpickers. Lockpickers and locksport people are honest people. If thieves were smart (they are not) they would know this stuff. (They dont)
you have to put loctite on the bolt, that it
Very duty
Have you come across a tough helmet lock yet? Although I know that a fool proof one doesn't exists.
This (as is with most such locks) has ONE bit of value. It makes the potential helmet thief check the other bikes parked near/around this bike to see if there's helmets with NO type of lock being used at all. It's the old "better than nothing" rule. Most helmet thefts are a quick grab and run crime of opportunity and if you can make your helmet harder to grab than the next guy's.... you win! 👍
I will say however..... Even for quick, affordable, bolt-on helmet locks... there ARE better choices.
I hope that's not the giveaway. LOL!!!!!!!
Y u no hammer pin?
Thats Canadian Preppers old Intro.
Bill had a motorcycle at one time......
I put my helmet inside my hard saddle bag.
That was funny. Do it agin.
Hint: Made in China. Sells for less than $20. Gotta manage those expectations folks!
Oh my god, wow... I wouldnt lock up a bicycle helmet with this thing.
If it was any better they would just cut the strap, almost pointless either way. (at the mall etc...) I just use a small padlock that won't fit over my brake lever ball, and I hang my helmet over to hide the lock...the surprise may make them leave it.
(only with my beat up helmet) I never leave my good ones. Seems foolish to.
Noice!
What price
That takes the cake as the biggest piece of junk lock. What a joke!!!
On my picture u can see my old helmet is a shoei at the time of purchase 1200 dollars (2010) and I don’t trust any lock I take my helmet with me
On the other hand: it’s a helmet lock. It doesn’t need to rise above junk.
Unbelievable...
Who leaves their helmen on their bike?
If you want to use a helmet lock DIY.
Wire and a paddlock under the bike seat.
All good comments the long screw made me laugh the most at this crap lock because that is what the makers are doing screwing the buyer and risking theft of there prize possession
Is seen is people just take their helmets with them they rarely leave it
a ziptie would offer more resistance
Which is more secure? This abomination, or a Master Lock attached with zip ties
Wow, that company are thieves - stealing customers money!
Man this is such a dang piece of junk, and obvious about it too. I wonder if you could just stick a swiss army knife in there and wiggle it a bit to get it to open?
There's a special place in hell reserved for anyone stupid enough to leave their lid locked to their bike :-/
Pick it? I'm going at it with bolt cutters.
I just saw this video about workers using bolt cutters to remove "Love Locks" on bridges in Prague. It would be awesome if Bill and/or LPL could go there sometime and see how many locks they could remove in an hour, day, week, etc.. ruclips.net/video/seMUW6pakbo/видео.html
nothing like cutting corners to sell security products....
This is obviously a very ergonomic way to store but not secure your helmet on a bike.
All you need is a padlock
That key is a joke. It looks like one of those giveaway keys they glue to car dealer advertisement cards. You go into the dealer, try your key, and if it starts the car, you get to keep the car. But none of the keys ever work.
I get your alarming awareness. Let's see what edc objects jerks can use to unlock this. Would make a much better video
lol....yeah, how cheesy is that!!!!
but motorcycle helmet locks weakest links are the straps on the helmet themselves.
sadakotube Weakest link is the user who leave his helmet unguarded.
O shit .Great if you lose your key..lol.🌟⭐🌟⭐🌟😎
shouldnt leave a multi hundred dollar helmet attached to a motorcycle. i think this is a mildly visual deterrent
Yeah it's a question of mild deterrence as most thieves are just opportunists who snatch available helmets and don't carry tools like the punch, hex driver, picks or shims.
If it's made for a Harley of course it's going to be heavy.
Look like a cheap Chinese copy of an old eighties Yamaha lock. The original was hidden under the frame so you can't get a pin punch on it and is also head a Philips screw not an Allen head. It was still useless then an no one ever used them back then.
Wow I’ve never seen such bad junk like that, no skill needed there
Wow. *face palm* Looks like some bored kid threw that together in his dads shop from spare parts.
And a d-ring is held in place with....?
That's right, a "cloth" strap.
It's better to have a proper helmet (integral) and have a wire/chain to run through the opening.
I stay away from it
$13:69 = $13:68 too much.
It would have been MUCH more secure to just leave the keys with the lock 😒
more?? how
@@AndyMcBlane Sarcasm!
What crap!
