No way, that's hilarious. It's genuinely quicker to pick the lock than it is to use the real key Edit: you could probably pick it with a tension wrench as the pick, it's an absolute joke
In a past episode they tried different unusual things, and got an open with a chicken bone and with a random piece of plastic garbage. I would go with a toothpick because it has the word pick in it.
kurtilein3 I saw a video from LPL where he used music wire, but a chicken bone?! How do you even manage to make a lock that bad? That’s the kind of thing where you have to make an effort to make it that bad
@@daveh7720 Hey, maybe it was a piece of nylon wire tie and i just remember a randon piece of plastic garbage, i do not clearly remember. Anyway, the chicken bone makes a point. Just settle it by picking it with a wooden toothpick.
This is the company that lists one of its security features as a pin tumbler cylinder for increased resistance to picking. This is printed on the packaging for a model 5SSk security level 9.
Ive use random keys to bump locks that will accept the key. Doesnt always work but it does work quite a bit. This key was close enough that it should work on most locks.
Hey Bill, dunno if you know, but master locks can open both ways. Not kidding. Open counter clockwise and when you bump up against the guard, put another wrench in the middle to rotate it further.
We use these locks where i work for locking out valves and such. I found out about the new ball bearings on accident when someone lost the key and rapping on it with a small hammer wouldn't pop it. Ended up picking it and saw the ball bearings.
Hey thanks for your videos. I was able to help a lady gain access to her filing cabinet yesterday after she lost her keys. Just used a couple of Bobby pin hair clips. (Now I might be hooked on lock sports...) 😎👍
I have a Master Lock No. 5 here for which practically any piece of metal I can fit into the keyway and touch the pins with seems to act like the key. In fact, the best tool I have to get it open is probably a sawtooth key extractor, just because it's pointy and doesn't have much in the way of bumpy bits on it impeding its progress being inserted.
Just posted on the forums the other day a picture of a key bitting that was just about the same.🤣 Always enjoy watching. Thanks for the hours and hours of entertainment.
I reckon they’re probably correct that the most common attack on the previous version was shimming or straight up prying open, and that the ball bearing locking mechanism is where they should spend their money upgrading it, if they had to choose between that and a better core.
I'm not a lock picker, but after watching so many of these videos when Bill pulled out that key my first thought was, "OMFG, that's a damn bump key!", and low and behold 1 second later Bill confirms :) Although I kind of wanted to see him use that key as a bump key on other Master Locks :)
I’ll spend 8 bucks on a Master Lock. Not to lock my shed, of course, they make me feel like a magician. Full disclosure, the first lock I bought for picking was a #3, it made a monkey out of me until I realized I had opened it but wasn’t applying enough pressure on the tension wrench to pop it. Your content is the best thank you for sharing your love of locks and the lock sport community Bill.
You know Bill, with that bitting, it just might give the tuna can a little trouble. Honestly, I think a sneeze would open that thing. I'd love to see the depths measured with a micrometer or caliper... from what I could tell in the video, cuts 1-3 looked identical, or damn near. Only the 4 cut looked different, maybe 2 depths shallower. Since so many in the comments are wondering if it's an April Fools joke... all I can say is, I have a Master Lock on a chain and a zip tie that looks to be a mirror of that one - first cut is a 2, the rest are 4 - you can open it with the flat head screwdriver (which is just a flat strip of metal) of the junky multi-tool I rescued from the side of the road.
I would love it if you was to buy another one of these locks so you can discover if: 1: If these locks are as quick and easy to pick even if they don't have shit bitting. 2: if the "bump key" supplied with this lock can actually be used to bump open another masterlock with different bitting. I would be happy to send you the money to buy another one of these locks or get one sent to you.
I'm curious how many things around the house you can find to open that lock, can a sterotypical bobby pin? How about one half of tweezers, a pick blank, metal nail file etc
master locks are more for brute force protection, I can just file down the warding and shake the pins out because I can widen the core with a tensioner without even trying
I'm sure this has been asked before, but... After YEARS of embarrassing Master locks, have they not offered you a job as a consultant so they can try to quit cranking out junk? Love your channel, Bill. Keep up the great work.
Their business isn't to make good locks. It's to make profit. They have an established brand and the majority of people don't know their locks are rubbish. So they still earn money selling a cheap and crappy product. Why would they change?
Those packages are awful to open without sharp objects laying around, still get flashbacks from childhood Christmases and no scissors nearby. The lock might open with twig from the Christmas tree though :)
It must be a logarithmic scale of hardness, Rake that lock break that block rate back block, Master lock master the possibilities. 👍🇺🇸👍. Great job and good luck
At this point putting master lock to its intended use is more of an invitation rather than a deterrent. Almost makes me to want buy one just to mess around.
I would like to note that the only reason their cores are still junk is that their original tooling was junk. If I am not mistaken, the cost of replacing all of your toolings to achieve higher tolerances is gargantuan. Why would they do that if they are most people's idea of "The name in security" and still making money?
You should have just used a straight wrench & picked it, or just cough at it, lightly of coarse. Somehow I'm still missing the stronger part?? Don't know how I keep missing that. LOL!!!!
It is amazing that Master Lock isn't embarrassed by your videos. Obviously they don't care as long as they keep selling massive amounts of lock cheaply.
I always say "locks are there to keep honest people honest" because I haven't seen too many consumer locks that are going to put up more than a minutes fight against someone who knows what they're doing and is up to no good.
I pretty much spit out my juice laughing at that bitting.. Wow.. Master lock should really implicate a Minimum adjacent cut spec, lol. I know that isn't practical, but they should really do something to exclude key codes like "That"
I really, really wish all major retailers like Lowe's, Home Depot, WalMart, etc. would dump Master Lock and start carrying a better brand. Just another reason to shop at Ace Hardware. Their Ace branded locks are much higher quality than the Master Lock garbage.
They have figured out how to make them cheaper to build. The driver for the bearings are being melted by a small torch. They need to have made this part from steel or brass. Your buddy melts them to open.
That key is an April Fools Joke!

Clearly Master lock April fooled BosnianBill :-)
OMG! That is funny!
Good idea if you want to impress your non-lockpick friends.
@KiratCan Kerem we screwed up your nice, even, 200 by adding a few more.
Tough :P
You don't understand the most important feature of Master Lock: if you lose the key, you don't have to cut the lock open.
You dont even need a key just hide a piece of wire near it
It's harder to open the plastic packaging rather than the lock itself.
that was honestly my thought during the start of the video. then wow it turned out to be true! lol
Overused joke
More security in the packaging. Nice to get a free bump key though!

Right? Its just word salad.
The city rake being the key was just savage :D
You should try to use the key from this lock and see if it will "bump key" other masterlocks. LoL :-)

That's what I was expecting when he cut the video back in :D
I so want to see the master lock key opening all other keys. lol

admittedly, going from styrofoam to cardboard is technically "now even stronger"
Home Depot only sells Master Lock junk. However they lock up the mowers and BBQs with higher quality locks.
I think they sell PacLocks now
I was REALLY hoping you'd actually use it as a bump key on another Master lock! It's not QUITE a bump key but I would bet it's close enough!
Ive use random keys to bump locks that will accept the key. Doesnt always work but it does work quite a bit. This key was close enough that it should work on most locks.
You should have tried the pre-made bump key on another lock that Master Lock so kindly provided for you. They're such good people there.
The 8 out of 10 signifies the 8 seconds it will take a potential thief to laugh at the lock before they start opening it.
8 out of 10 crooks will laugh at it.
I started laughing along with Bill as soon as I saw the key. That is wrong on so many levels.
Well... the problem is that it’s all on one level.
"Now Even Stronger" sticker on the package instead of the lock was the giveaway
You forgot to try staring it open - just stare at it for a full minute, it should pop open.

Did you notice the trademark symbol ? "STRONGER ™ " is not and adjective, it's a brand : They want to sell, not to improve strength.
They trademark the slogan. Just like subway saying eat fresh.

We had one on a gate at work and every morning in the winter I had to use a torch to get it to open, it froze every day.
Did the torch melt the lock?

I bet they even found a way to make those ball bearings a vulnerability, like maybe a cam made from Swiss cheese.

The stickker on the side of the lock says "Tough under FIRE" and thats where you need to put it. In a fire so you cant posibly pick it open.
