Very well explained Greg. Thanks for breaking down the prices at the end, very helpful. Keep it up!
instablaster.
Sick. U just helped me with 2 things lol. This weekend Gonna be awesome.
Did you get it done?
Rab Malt considering it was 4 years ago most likely
Hey do forget your nitrous
That intercooler is freakin adorable, good build keep it up !
hey man i want to ty so much for this series wow honestly ty so much, i was looking to do turbo in my 90 miata and i was overwhelm with options and shocked at the prices for turbo kits and scared of cheap turbos from ebay for i am not a millionare to afford a new motor if i blow mine, so this project as budget turbo is just what i wanted for what i see in forums online is like people are too condesendent to newbies like me when i ask question, and you answer them all spectialy drilling the oil pan, superb work, ty so much, right now im doing suspension kit koni and megasquirt, once thats done and i save more money ill do the turbe. ty from Venezuela and ill try to video what i do and ty personaly for knowlege shared here in RUclips Univerity lol. congrats on your work.
i like you. you put a lot of work into your vids. u deserve more views and subs!
Thanks man!
I've been just sitting here going through the entire build. Finally understanding how all the parts of the turbo work together (intercooler, wastegate, blowoff valve, etc..). I really want to do a build like this some day when I got some more money lol.
awesome build, going to help loads of people. thank you.
After finally deciding I wanted to run scca I researched the "easiest" and cheapest car to race successfully. I landed on the na miata. I saved for a few months and just aquired a 96na with a t28 running ms v1 with a very conservative tune. I watched most, if not all your miata videos before finally going to buy one.Your content definitely sealed the deal on what I was looking for when I purchased my first miata.
+Sgt Waffles Glad it was helpful!
Yes!!!! I've been waiting forever for this one
I still dont see how you only have 18k subs :/ you should be at least need to be @ 180k!!
+Coda5610 Agreed. Best car channel in youtube right now.
+yossi126 agreed
+Coda5610 For real! It's so informational and straightforward
Haha I said this exact thing a few months back and it's happening he's already doubled in size from 9k!
+patrick valentine I used to say weekly videos, months ago. Until I realized it's not possible yet to do one every single week. When I skip a week I try my best to do 2 the next week; sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I refuse to upload sub-par (to my standard) content just to get more videos up or get more subscribers.
that silicone hose all squeezed between the radiator and the subframe will get a small hole/slash and make a boost leak.
nice videos, you can make it simple to understand even for who barely understands english.
cheers
+Bv1nte I'll probably put a couple little pieces of plastic on it to protect it, but it will most likely take a long time to cause any issue. When you have a turbo Miata you always have to check out all the parts and inspect for and damage or issues, I do it on my other car every 1-2 weeks.
I've got AC and PS.. Seeing your video it should be a lot of "fun" to fit haha
You rock man.
I've been following you for a while. I already have Torsen, MS, bigger injectors, Supercharger etc. I'm working on installing an intercooler. So this video really helped.
Thanks!
+HellFireno88 Awesome man! Good luck with everything, get some vids up when it's all done!
+TheCarPassionChannel Thanks. I ran into the same issue you had with fitting the 2" from the turbo / supercharger and down to the IC. I'm going to remove my AC, so I'm thinking about just removing the fan that is in the way, and use the other one (I have two fans because of AC). What do you think about that?
HellFireno88 I'm thinking about just removing one of the fans, that should clear up enough space where I need it. I really want to keep the a/c just for the resale value.
Man I love how i don't even have a miata and still am so interested in these vids. Wish I lived in cali I would love to be apart of this channel and wrench
My advice is: don't come to cali, they are very strict here. Yikes!!
Keep up the videos bud! I just bought the shifter rebuild kit from moss, your videos help alot.
I just ran my piping (giggty!) last weekend. Thanks for the vid!
broke and boosted make me laugh and cry in the same time because i'm in same situation :))
Seems like you're really finding your voice in these videos, man. They get better and better. Keep up the good work, bro.
+Wyatt Laser It's taken a lot more practice than I thought! You don't realize how bad you sound until you go back and watch a video of yourself talking, hahaha. Thanks!
yes ive been waiting for this. fuck yeah bring the videos the more the better
my mx5 came factoory with no ac or power steering, makes my life so easy for my turbo build haha :P
nice video bro can't wait for the good weather to come here to colorado so I can start my miata, love the videos and I find them real helpful..
Thank you Greg this so helpful for the turbo build I'm about to do.Keep it up man👍
good commentary and everything in the video i thought it was very well put together! not a miata guy but its great how you kept the video short, but didn't skip any important things at all. also, mighty car mods has a turbo miata build video somewhere if you want to check it out!
8:55 you should be careful cutting the support of yous fans :p
Love this broke and boosted series! Subscribed
I really love your series!
I don't even have a driver's license but I love to see how it's done.
cant wait for the finished product!
Please never stop making videos...
also apropriatley sozed intercoolers with give you far less pressure drop due to the interior volume of the intercooler. cant wait to see some dyno results from ur build
Ohh man i remember cutting my IC pipes, but i made a bead roller out of a pair of old vise grips !! just had to use a grinder to grind out a notch on the top half of the teeth of it and then weld a little bead on the bottom half and when you clamp it on the welded bead on the vise grip pushes into the notch you cut in the top half and creates actually a pretty decent bead roll. And it didn't cost me a dime !
One recommendation when mountain bov's is preferably you want it closest to the throttle body ( like how Car Passion did ) because that is the first point where surge begins. So the closest you can get the bov to the throttle body the less likely you are to experience surge at the compressor wheel.
+Review Guy Haha genius idea on the bead roller.
+TheCarPassionChannel thanks !
Hey man I've noticed throughout your videos you have some serious lifter tick. there's an easy fix for this. next time you change your oil put some dex 3 in there and the ratio is simple. here's an example approx 3 quarts of oil in the miata put 2 quarts of oil and 1 quart of dex 3. another thing that is just absolutely amazing to run in your miata is Rotella T6 oil. I've owned quite a few miatas and run them all with that na and boosted all year around and I live in Ohio so it can get cold here and it keeps the engine clean and running amazing.
Great video. Love the outtakes.
4:33 hahahaha I frickin love you man
A suggestion for saving room, might ad $30-$40 to the budget, but used that coolant reroute video for inspiration. If you want to still use the stock radiator, you can buy those thin 10”-12” fans. Stock fans (mainly the supports) are quite big and cause issues as this video presented
These vids are gold
Quality keeps getting better. Great use of inexpensive parts. Since we are in the southwest where temps are often 90's (or in my case 110-120's) and intercooler really is mandatory. I am seriously considering doing an air to water setup for mine. I have had good luck with A/W setups back in my RSW days.
+NickelNDiminIt Yeah you definitely want an IC if your temps are 90+... It makes a ridiculous difference in air intake temps.
TheCarPassionChannel
Do you think an air to water charge cooler would fit? Most are ~4" deep and vary in width and height. But I think a 4"x4" charge cooler could be fit with slim electric fans. That would shorten the plumbing runs a LOT and maybe preserve throttle response? What do you think?
NickelNDiminIt I've always thought about a water-to-air unit. Air-to-air is just so simple, no water lines or anything external to worry about.
TheCarPassionChannel
I have been an engineer too long, lol. I fixed the miata cupholder buy building an entirely custom console from scratch. I'm not very good at simple. :)
NickelNDiminIt I know others of your type, lol. The ATW intercooler is actually seeming like a really good idea now that I think about the fact that you would free up so much airflow to the radiator... got me thinking now!
great job! that coupler between the frame and fan shroud will eventually rub through though.
+rehlek In a long time yeah. I'm okay with spending $12 to replace it when the time comes.
very informative, with humor throw in!
Nice videos bud! Can't wait to turbo my car (: I got almost everything to turbo it. NO A/C lol I live in Arizona
@thecarpassionchannel you need to recirculate the BOV with stock ecu/air flow meter. Air is getting measured going into the system but then leaves when vented to atmosphere. causing car to run rich
+rstormzand Yep I know, will address it if it becomes an issue.
+TheCarPassionChannel I figured you knew, but being rich wont rly hurt anything. unless it causes a misfire or a bog i guess. good luck with the rest of the build tho!
rstormzand Yeah it can cause noticeable power loss between shifts for sure. I might en up piping it in when I'm tuning it, it just depends how bad it is. It will be my first time doing this with the stock ECU so it will be a learning process for sure.
TheCarPassionChannel i had my turbo miata on the stock ecu last year with aem fic. its pretty good but i could never get the transition from vacuum into boost just right and it would occasionally misfire. what piggyback will you be using?
rstormzand Were you using any sort of o2 sensor signal modifier?
Keep going mate you're doing well
Love your channel, wish you lived in Chicago to further guide me on mine. I have a 1.6L no power steering or ac so from the sound of its very good. I also love your first Miata awesome piece of art sir!
+Ricardo Montana Now P/S and no A/C makes the piping sooooooooooooo easy. Protip - you can replace the crazy stock lower radiator hoses/hardpipe setup with a single 1985 Buick Electra radiator hose to make even more room. (99% sure it's an upper radiator hose but if you go to a parts store and look at one you'll see which one you need. You just cut it to fit.)
lol where do you live? that mexican music at the end was too funny!
+RUIND I live about 20 minutes from Mexico haha
lolol that explains everything!!
+TheCarPassionChannel You're in Texas?
Evan8D SoCal, San Diego
as Regular car reviews would say "air goes in one turbo and air goes in another turbo and makes BIGGER AIRRRR"
you really should leave more of a gap between two peices of pipe connected by a silicone joiner. They need space to move about and flex and it also prevents the ends of the pipe from grinding against each other
First off love your videos, nice to see someone trying to do everything the best way they can. My question is, since you're still running a MAF, why did you decide against recirculating the blow off valve?
+Matthew Ammerman If I have difficulties with it, I'll have to recirc it. For now it's just the easiest solution. Good question though, I'll try to remember to cover that in the part 2 video.
Bigger piping is also more volume to have to compress and can increase lag, if it's big enough, not going to be an issue with that cute little cooler but with something like my RB25 running 600 x 300 x 80 intercooler large piping can start to cause an issue.
tangles01 clap
good video. I plan on my first gen sc2 soon. getting all the parts first
I find it hard to believe that an intercooler is needed and that it even does anything... but it totally does :P
You should see intake temps with and without an intercooler. An intercooler can easily lower them by 100+ degrees F.
Funny outtakes, Greg!😂 Did you see the Turbo Miata build at the Carthrottle- Channel?
+Fuelfoxx I'll have to check it out
if i were you i'd consider running washers on the bottom mounting as those bolts are going to end up being pulled through the plastic
Perfect broke video for me😊😊
I take it you live on a busy street? Keep up the videos man, good stuff!
I know the name of the song that interrupted you at the end of your video! It's called el troquero locochon by Gerardo Ortiz haha sorry my Mexican instinct kicked i when I heard it ha
Tony Bon nice 👍🏾
Thank yoy for the so much nice information. please tell me is it better to use more metal tube-pipes than silicon connections? i mean, at a silicon elbow is it better to use a metal pipe?
LOL +1 on the Black Widows!
I wonder if heating plastic pipe, balloon it with air pressure, then flatten an shape to better snake through tight spots. Thinking of it as same air flow capable just friendlier dimensions. Eample, 2 1/2 inch pipe formed to 1/2 inch by 6 inch wide (guessing) to sweep over radiator under hood then forms back to the 2 1/2. Point of this question is can the pipe dimensions be altered to equal or greater and still have same result?
might be an idea to stick within your budget and make a home brew water sprayer to cool the charged air :P
Big intercooler + small pipes = ideal. Quicker spool due to less volume and slow air velocity through the intercooler itself
Intercooler system volume does not notably affect lag, very common misconception.
@@TheCarPassionChannel air cools as it expands.. so do you think there would be any benefit from running smaller pipe through the actual intercooler itself? Assume you are below .4 mach
@@alikengi17 It will cool as it expands into the intercooler and heat back up an equal amount as it's compressed immediately again into the piping though
@@TheCarPassionChannel precisely, I want it to be in it's heated state through the intercooler and then expand as it enters the throttle body. Maybe results would be negligible.. Also I would love to have a map sensor at the manifold and another pressure sensor near the turbo compressor
It's seems that nobody really knows, my theory is that as long as you maintain your boost target at the manifold, flow through the intercooler system is sufficient, although an open wastegate will reduce exhaust flow restriction. So it's a very difficult line to walk.
So glad I don’t have power steering. In fact why did Mazda bother with PS especially on the earlier models?
Good video. But... the larger the tubing and intercooler, the more volume the turbo has to fill before feeding pressure to the manifold/cylinders.
still deciding if I should keep power steering and AC or if I shouldn't take them out, hmm...
you should do a video on installing a coolant reroute.
+Alec Parkes I have many requests for this, definitely a future video.
Can you do a head gaskets video?? That be awesome. And please let us know where you buy your parts
+Victor dARKO It's coming up pretty soon :) Got all the parts already.
TheCarPassionChannel Sounds fantastic! can't wait!
Is it still coming?
Hey Greg, can you do the COP install video for standart ecu and ms2?
Hey dude, can you please make a video on what coilovers are the best, and how to install them?
+SGsuck Will be coming some time in late March or so
+TheCarPassionChannel Awesome! I will buy my first car ( Mx-5 NA) tomorrow :D
where did you get the BOV & piping?
Hello! Excellent video ... I would like to know what dimensions has that intercooler?
I was under the impression that a bov/ bpv wasn't required for low boost aka under 8psi, and that the increased wear and potential damage that is caused by compressor surge is mostly for higher boost applications.
+George Lamontagne I like to be safe rather than sorry, it definitely won't hurt to have it.
+TheCarPassionChannel o for sure. I tried to fit a ebay BOV on my miata, but it kept leaking and not working well enough so I just tossed it. Eventually I will be putting a name brand BOV on there. I just finished my budget miata build all in with megasquirt it was 1500 total. Loving it so far, and loving your build!
Wow!!! You are using the stock air box on this turbo build??? I'm getting really curious on what ECU and tuning method you are going to use. This is some great stuff.
+boaz ovilma Stock AFM, but not the stock airbox. It's my first time tuning thing was so it will be a learning experience.
@TheCarPassionChannel - Have you seen a driverside fender route for the 2.5" piping, if so what are your thoughts? PITA? can you keep the Fender liners?
Love your STREET CRED!
+Troy Sebo Yeah I've seen it, I just didn't want to hack any holes in the car. On part 2 of this video, I have a slight revision for the piping routing.
How should I route the vacuum line for the iscv? I have an ms3, would you block off the line, make a bung? I can't find any other info, thanks
I was wondering if most of the parts youve used will work on a 1.8 obviously with some variations on where the engines are differnet but is size and fitmit will most things fit?
Yeah turbocharging the 1.8 and 1.6 are almost identical. The main differences are the manifold and oil feed line.
Could you possibly link the items you used for this? I am pricing a turbo build and I can't find a kit that has all of the piping you used.
I don't know if someone asked this question already but what about Smog, will it pass it or not when you turbo the Miata.
Hey Greg! How is the Freddy Blow-Off Valve working with Broke and Boosted? Are you happy with its operation?
I ended up not using it, it leaked so bad right out of the box. I talked about it in ep14 I think. No problems thus far running no BOV though.
if the turbo intake is say 2 inches and can only flow "X amount" of air is it still worth it to have the intercooler pipe larger, as the air will condense after passing through?
PLEASE HELP!
that big hose on the throttle body what do i do with it if i have a adaptations ecu and a map sensor to go with it ?
do i still tap it in ?
cause if i cover the hole up while the car is one it kills the motor but no problems with the build just dont know what to do? PLEASE help
Can you do a how to install Manual boost controller please
can you make a vid on the hoses and wires
May I know if the 19"x16" is the core size or includes both inlet and outlets?
hey greg, B&B is using stock injectors with the rising rate fuel reg correct?
+Nick Racicot Yep
Good Job on that!
Hey Man! When is episode 8 coming???? Keep It Up!
Where did you get your couplers? Those things are expensive and I'm looking for some cheap(er) silicon ones.
90% of them from an Ebay kit that was around $80 for all the piping, couplers, and clamps. Some individual ones can be found on Ebay for pretty cheap, and if you need a specialty sized one hit up siliconeintakes dot com.
Greg, what do you think about Watercooled Intercoolers on a setup with a GT 2560R: Worth the effort or waste of time and money?
Can you recommend a special one?
+Bla Blupp From what I know about them, they are super efficient and can save space, but they're more complicated and more expensive since you have to have a separate water pump and lines, etc. In my opinion it's best to just go with the good old air to air intercooler with the Miata.
Alright, so as far as intercooler placement on a Miata goes it's pretty much a no brainer that it goes into the "smile". But here's my question: if you're going boosted and not upgrading your cooling isn't the heat from the intercooler going to diminish the efficiency of your radiator, potentially causing engine overheat?
That's the one thing I still can't wrap my head around with Miata boost builds.
+Totally Legit Gaming [TLEG] Not only the heat from the intercooler, but it also blocks the airflow to the radiator. Keeping turbo cars cool is a constant battle! For street driving it's usually not a big deal but at the track, temps get high fast if your cooling system isn't in order.
+TheCarPassionChannel Right, so it's like I thought. So for a track car you'd place the intercooler someplace else, or even go water-to-air and place it's radiator someplace else?
recently sold my NA but im coming back to the country and i want to buy another NA but good ones are hard to find so im thinking about getting an NB.. do u know of a channel like yours but works on NB's instead?
btw love your channel
+s Haha not really sure of another channel like mine for NB's, but quite a bit of what I cover will work for NB's as well. OR at least serve as a good guideline.
I will have a citroen c2 with a 1.4 turbo diesel and it does not have an intercooler, do you think I should fit one as a first mod? (it makes 1,1 bar of boost)
Street cred 😂
RESPECT++
greg if one were to do this build identical and not run an intercooler, and that person were to track day their car at autocross events...would we be adding too much stress to the motor or anything? or just be running too rich? or be fine with no intercooler?
You just want to keep the boost low and the ignition conservative. Even at 5psi, the intake temps can get pretty high. Too much boost + no intercooler = detonation.
What down pipe did you use? Do I need one specific for each individual turbo?
I know that it's going to be a low boost build but are you going to do any sort of oil catch can?
+Kykle Nah I don't even have one on my 250whp car. I will set on up when I swap the head in a few weeks though. On a lower power build I'd just recommend a 323 GTX PCV valve from Fab9Tuning.
thoughts on the cx racing diy kits? i read that there turbo kits are not so great, but haven't read anything on their inter-coolers. On one of your videos you had a cs racing inter cooler. so what are your thoughts?
+Classified Recon I would totally run their intercooler kit. IC's and piping are so simple they're hard to mess up, plus it's not like they're exposed to a lot of heat like a manifold.
hey man quick question if you're not going to run and ECU how are you going to prevent the mass air flow sensor from sensing boost... I might be a bit confused on this topic
+luis moreno I don't really have to worry about the AFM, I think it pretty much maxes out and then you control the fueling with rising fuel pressure in boost. You do need to trick the o2 sensor though, it needs to shut off as soon as it goes into boost. I'll cover that!
Do you have the bolt sizes/thread types by any chance? Mine didn't come with bolts, and I would feel silly walking around the hardware store with an intercooler under my arm!
+Phillip Glass-Hess (Wingman703) LOL before I read your comment I was going to recommend just bringing the IC to the hardware store. Don't feel silly haha. They're probably M5 or M6 bolts.
Water to air intercooler ftw
My flyin miata kit should be shipping today cant wait!
Voodoo 2 or FM2?
+Aidan Morris Pretty much FM2 without electronics. I bought the custom spec turbo kit from them
+Stratospheric Pretty much the best option out there, the FM + MS + Garrett.
+TheCarPassionChannel Yeah, im hoping to run 230ish hp. I just hope the engine will take it as well as yours.
+Stratospheric are you gonna be putting in a new diff?
Hey Greg, does the length of 19" include the end tanks or just the core? Thanks man.
+Cory B I'm fairly certain when you see the size details online they are talking about the core only.
what do i do with the hose next to the throttle body if i dont have stock ecu ?
when i put my hand over it while running it kills the car
hey question that fitting you use is the exact size you needed for the hose because Ima about to order one but not sure . ALSO WHERE DO YOU ORDER YOUR FITTINGS FROM STILL LOOKING FOR THE ONE FOR THE OIL PAN PLEASE LET ME KNOW THANKS
+Anthony Diaz I get pretty much all of the fittings from eBay and Amazon. What's your first question again?
+TheCarPassionChannel my question is the fitting you used for the intercooler next to the throttle body where did you get it from . Also where did you get the one for the oil pan to been looking for it can't find if you really want can you please email me the links of each fitting I only need this for my turbo set up my email is diazanthony300ex@gmail.com please email me them thanks
