Refurbishing Alloy Wheels - Polished Aluminium & Painted Insets - Cuore Avanzato Project Episode 13

- Taking the wheels on my L512S Daihatsu Cuore Avanzato TR-XX R4 project car back to bare aluminium and polishing them up - made trickier as certain areas need to be painted!
Paints used are E-Tech's wheel-specific range of aerosols.
Polish is Meguiar's NXT All Metal Polish.
Sealant is Sonus Aluminum (sic) Sealant.
The FAQs:
"So this is a Mira, right?"
Yes, sort of. It is basically identical to the L500 (specifically, the L512S) Daihatsu Mira TR-XX Avanzato R4.
"Don't Mighty Car Mods have one of these?"
Again, sort of. They're a very close relative of the Daihatsu MCM's Marty is a big fan of. The car in their Kei To The City film (and Marty's later conversion project) share much of this car's DNA.
"Didn't Regular Car Reviews drive one of these?"
Yes! On the RCR UK trip, they drove an almost identical UK-spec Cuore Avanzato. I actually met the owner at the RCR UK meetup. It's actually my Suzuki Cappuccino that they mention in the video about the meet.
"What does Cuore Avanzato even mean, anyway?"
It's Italian, actually. "Cuore" means "Heart", and "Avanzato" means "Advanced".
"I drove one of these in Gran Turismo, and it said it was front wheel drive, not all wheel drive?"
They did 2WD/FWD versions of the turbo Miras in Japan, too, the "4" in the name is what denotes the AWD/4WD/4x4 version.
"Is it a kei car?"
Yes, it meets the kei car regulations, though whether it "counts", being a UK car, is an interesting question.
"Is it JDM?"
No, it's a UK model, there are some subtle differences/modifications for the UK market, though nothing earth shattering.
"Did they really only make 80 of them?"
Of the UK road car version, yes, give or take a couple, plus there were about 20 rally-prepared ones. The Japanese equivalent is far more common.
"Is it a 3 cylinder engine?"
No, it's a 4 cylinder, the Daihatsu JB-JL 16v engine, though it meets the same 660cc capacity limit for kei cars that the three cylinders used elsewhere do.
"Is it turbocharged?"
Yes, with a small top-mount intercooler.
"How does the AWD work?"
There is a selectable drive to the rear coming off the gearbox, with a viscous coupling between the rear differential and the propshaft to allow for the difference in wheel speeds when cornering.
"How much does it weigh?"
768kg, per the UK original specification sheet.
"Where can I get one?"
To be perfectly honest, it's a lot easier to find a JDM one as an import than a UK car, but if you keep an eye on Ebay and forums, one might come up.
"Is it for sale?"
I'm afraid not, no.

The patience needed to do car work is beyond me, But I do enjoy watching videos about it haha
damn your patient! looks great
Heh, well, it's that old thing of "You can have it good, fast, or cheap: pick any two" - I could've just given it to the local wheel place and they'd have sorted it out, but my cost for doing all four wheels is less than I'd have to pay to get one repainted and diamond cut by someone else.
It would also have been much, much faster to have painted the entire wheel, but I wanted that aluminium face.
Your „good enough“ is better than 99% of the average car guys wheels ;D
Nice touch with the vinyl , it's the little things that takes workmanship to the next level.
Whoa, awesome work! I'm enjoying all of your restoration vidoes
Thanks!
Those wheels look amazing. Well worth the effort you put into them.
That‘s a really beautiful result! Congratulations! :)
Excellent work there! God knows why I was recommended this but worth a watch!
Thanks! Frankly, if you can work out the exact mechanisms of RUclips's recommendations, though, you'd make a fortune...
Those old tyres were smoother than Duncan Goodhew's head!
just gonna point out here, not sure if you noticed! but when you painted the back side of the alloy, you didnt mask the mating surface for the hub, so you got a layer of paint between the alloy wheel and the brake disc center hub!
Ben Wagstaff Yes, I mask the centre bore where it fits on the hub spigot, as it's a close fit, but I've never found a layer of paint on the mating face to make any difference, so I don't tend to worry about it.
If you brush painted them and had a thicker layer or heavy runs, it might cause a problem with this compressing as you torque the wheel nuts up, but the thin, even layer from spraying seems to make no odds.
fair enough chap! just popped to mind as i was watching!
cracking little nugget of a car mind aint it, enjoying these so far!
Cheers, glad you're enjoying the videos! Yeah, it's a fun little thing.
got any plans for more power from it? quite tuneable despite the small engine!
would love one, right up my street that. there like a yorkshire terrier thats caught a wiff of some sausages cooking....
Haha, good description! No, my intent was to keep the car pretty much standard, though I may consider upgrades if I need to replace things in the future.
Damn that refurb looks like a million bucks. Keep it going Dave 👍👍
Brill. Loved your work here
Thanks! Bit of effort, but was happy with the result.
I did the same with my alloys so I know just how much time it cost you.
On mine I went with diamond clear applying around 5 coats.
12 years on and they have held up amazingly well, so I plan to do the same again!
Good to know!
I really didn't find it that bad to do, you kind of switch off after a while, and stick some youtube videos on while you're sanding it.
I too have refurbished enough wheels to know you spent half an eternity doing this, but the end result is fantastic, nice job.
I believe they look perfect! Nice job!
You did a great job there! Looks superb :)
What a difference. Great job. You might consider getting new tires soon. That front right tire is bald.
Great job, roughly how long did each wheel take ?
Well, leaving out the time to let paint cure and so on, which I guess doesn't really count, probably a few hours each. It's mainly sanding down the face to remove the machining marks and get it smooth for polishing that takes the majority of the time, but it's not so bad if you stick something on to watch or listen to while you do it. I'd say I could probably have done the set in a solid weekend of work if I'd concentrated on it in one hit, but I kind of did it in bits here and there while working on other stuff.
Of course, either painting them completely or having them re cut would sidestep a chunk of that entirely.
Thanks for the reply, I have watched all your video's and think they are very well done, hope you will be making more.
Thanks, glad you liked them! Yes, I'll be making more videos in the near future.
I would not have the patience to do that. Good job.
It does get old quickly, yes.
Curious question, could you wetsand like 1000, 1500, 2000, clean the surface and clear coat it..obviously clear coat isn't going to stick when you polish it
Well, that's pretty much how the original diamond cut finish is done, and I don't see why it WOULDN'T work, though as per the original finish, if you get corrosion starting at the edges or from chips, it might be hard to rectify neatly?
@@InitialDave something to think about I guess, bare aluminum gets dirty quick
It can, yes, though as the car isn't driven a huge amount, it's not ridiculously bad, and a sealant coating like Sonus helps a fair bit.
Effectively, it's a compromise between what will be most resilient a finish, against how hard it is to re-polish and correct any defects you do get. At least, that's my view on it.
Very nice work
Thanks!
lovely work
Hi mate got the exact same model as you been parked in my garden for past 10 years needs some work what price do you think a garage is going to charge for new clutch, oil leak also do you think I could go to a regular garage or a Japanese specialist
Clutch shouldn't be overly expensive, as other than removing the prop shaft, the gearbox and engine setup is little different to a FWD car, so it'll mostly be labour cost I'd say. Oil leak is a bit of an open question, depends where it's leaking, might be awkward getting hold of things like gaskets.
Everything about the cars is pretty "normal", so I can't imagine general work like that needs to be a specialist - if someone can recommend a decent garage, they should be able to handle it.
Just be sure that they get the right parts, and don't assume that it's the same as the L700 series Cuore because of the model name.
Might be worth asking on the Kei Cars In The Park forum for recommendations.
InitialDave cheers for the quick reply mate
Hay mate, how much time do you expect the wheels to be as good as they are on the video? Did they change over the winter? Update us, please.
Well, I haven't really been using the car over winter to avoid road salt etc, but yeah, perhaps an update on how the finish has held up to the British weather might be an idea.
I want to do freshen up my wheels the same way you did but I was shocked that you only polished the front of the wheel. I was thinking of clear coating them.
Mmm, I briefly mention that in the video - I think clearcoat doesn't always adhere that well to polished metal, and I figured that if I used the sealant, it should work at least ok, and I can more easily polish the wheels up again than I can have to sand back failed clearcoat and start again.
My thinking is influenced by the fact it's not a daily driver, so it won't have too hard a life, either.
Yeah, you did say that in the video. Well I will try your method and if it does not work I can clean the polish and do a clear coat. Will update you on that in the next month. I have steel wheels for the winter so my wheels are not going to see any salt/freezing temperatures.
Nice work!
Excellent work.
Great work! Great result!
Thanks!
Cracking job
Fantastic job
Superb job.
Bloody good job sir
Defintely looks like brand new
Great job on that!
Great job
Thanks!
Cool Whip
Wheels look brilliant
Thanks!
can i do these on chrome wheel?mine is peeled off at the back
In theory, yes, though it might involve a bit more work.
Awesome!!!
Enjoying your vids.👍
the wheels looks nice
Fuck, looks awesome.
wow he had to do that 4 times?! geez.
Wow
Jesus Christ that's a lot of work. Do all that, and then just do it three times more!
Yup, it's an arse!
I’d be proud if that was my car 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Damn you should not drive on those tires...
Well, they're just old ones I got to give me something to move the car around on. I replaced them later.
Good. I haven't seen tires in such bad shape in a very long time. Even the cheapest chinese ones are better.
Yeah, the car had two that were completely dead, with big tears in them, so I got the local tyre place to give me a couple out their junk pile.
Ain't worth the time doing that, might just remove rust n spray an anti rust protectant n finish d job. Shiny doesn't matter as long as it's durable and functional.
I'm not having a go or anything but why are you putting so much effort and £££ into a 20 year old Daihatsu, an old Porsche or something I could understand, but an old K car?????
BTW the oil change video is my favourite so far.
I like oddities like this, they're rare and different, and it's just fun, I guess.
The L701 variant of the Cuore/Mira is my favorite car ever. I'd kill to have the TR model of that car. That or a Subaru Impreza. I like Kei Cars, they have such a 90's appeal to them that just seems to go on forever and ever, the standard wont ever die and if anything they may get even smaller. I'd kill to have a drive in your car sir. I'm trying to find an L701 shape as my 1st car, but my Uni studies are getting in the way and there's hardly any left now.
Dylan 'Sonmambulist' Harwood having owned a WRX, I actually prefer the Avanzato!
But yes, the L700 is 15-20 years old now, and that's the age when cars that don't have a big following really start disappearing. Keep your eye out, though, they're still out there.
