    About Me
“The world needs more makers.” ~ RoyerX
Being from a family of creatives whose motto was to produce not to consume was etched into Kyle from a very early age and being educated at home gave him many opportunities to work hard at his own creative pursuits.
At eighteen, Kyle graduated high school and two weeks later received his Journeyman Smith Stamp and a rare double win of the George Peck Award and Bill Moran Award, “the 18-year-old prodigy”, “the blazing bladesmith” was what BLADE Magazine labeled him. Following that victory in November 2009 BLADE Magazine ran a special five-page spread “That Young and That Good”, the article went on to say “His ability to masterfully execute new designs, processes and artistic damascus patterns is remarkable. In spite of his young age, his fit/finish and attention to detail is representative of some of today's most known and sought after makers.” He was one of two to achieve Mastersmith by the age of twenty. His knives and his skills are highly sought after worldwide.
In the early years, if you weren’t at a knife show or a hammer-in, learning from the masters, information was hard to find, there was no online content and only a few books and videos, so it was a lot of trial and error in the knife shop. Kyle is passionate to teach makers his more than fourteen years of experience.
“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” We hope we can inspire you on your maker’s journey.
    Thanks for watching
    Enjoy!

Josh! We gotta talk about this video... DUDE! You do all the videoing and editing for these episodes, correct?
The way you shot this episode is masterfully done. Wow! You deserve all the props.
The cinematography coupled with the music you chose was so good! Seriously. You deserve much praise for this. I’ve seen you growing in your abilities and consistently improving - I know you felt this episode in your gut. You knew it was good, and I’m here reinforcing that assertion. Recognize the achievement of making an episode this gorgeous. Realize a goal met, knowing you still have room to grow even further. Revel in the feeling. Let it spur you on.
My hat is off to you, friend. Here’s an incredible example of the mastery of the shots and lighting he got in this video. 19:07 f******g superb.

The filming and editing are superb, and the sound and vision segments were mesmerising.
Such a pleasure to watch KR, thanks.

Aweeeee!!! Thanks, @CorvinRayne That means a lot to me! Yes, I do the videoing and editing for all these videos. I read most of the comments, and a lot of them are saying how awesome Kyle is (which he is awesome, and I tell him some of them!). It's a bit rarer when people like you comment awesome comments to me! I got a little teary-eyed when I read your comment. :) I told my wife, she says you're sweet. :D
I really enjoy making good videos. I watch just about every video we post about 5 times over while I edited them. I consider it a good video when I enjoy watching the video for that last and 5th time. I've been enjoying the newer music I've been using. It's calmer and helps tell the story of Kyle putting his soul into his work. It seems like a lot of viewers are also liking the changes, that's always a good thing! :) It can be hard to get recognition as an editor and videographer, especially when you are working with a brother who's talent is amazing and not of this world! So I really really appreciate you and all the people commenting great things on this post! ~Josh Royer

@5:00 that dirt will be a magnet to velvet and will scratch your blade when you put it in and out. I learned that when I made a velvet lined holster for my pistol. Alot of people on forum's screaming no. The best option would be the only point of contact is around the tip and at the guard, so your blade floats in the scabbard.

Gentleman - yet again props for yet again a great episode. I grew up in a part of the country where we had 3 channels to watch over the antenna, CBS, NBC and PBS. Somehow i found myself watching PBS most of the time, a weird combination of This Old House, The Red Green Show, Monty Python and Artisan Documentaries. This channel is somehow a wonderful combination of all of those things and I thank you for it. As a random note some of the music today reminded me of an artist called Sleeping at Last, super good. Stay safe and keep up the great work guys.

Tip for the supergluing..... add just a little table salt. When you clamp the halves together for drying as well as the super glue the grains of salt act like little teeth for stopping slipping around. Always a problem with supergluing.... just place the glue down then like you was salting your food... old cabinet makers trick but thought it would be great in this instance... beautiful work

Hi, I really enjoy your builds. I thought I'd pass on a couple of items concerning your scabbard. You mentioned figuring out stitching of the leather across the opening of your scabbard. One way to solve this is by throating and tipping the scabbard. A throat is a metal fitting that reinforces the opening and slides down over the leather, concealing and covering the leather at a point where it could get beaten up by drawing and sheathing the sword. A lot of times, a design is cut into the metal so the leather shows through like a family crest or such. A development of the throat is a rain cap that fits on the guard and completely covers where the sword enters the scabbard keeping rain away from the blade. Tippping is wrapping the end of the scabbard also in metal and capped with a finial to protect the leather from being drug on the ground, or stairs, etc. Plus it seriously dresses up the scabbard. My rapier and main gauche set are throated and tipped and they look great! Wish I had rain caps put on, but I can still do that.
By the way, I would love to see your approach to a matched rapier and main gauche set!!!

Dude! (my horrible California surfer impression) I am an old, injured, and mostly home bound construction worker. I have worked professionally with metals my entire adult life. I have also worked with wood, mostly as a hobby, but often for income. I tinker. I build. I invent. (then discover that someone beat-me-to-every-invention, lol) I tell you this, not to brag, but to give you an idea of my qualifications for the praise I'm about to "bestow upon your worthy head" for your masterful skills. All of the extra time I have now allows me to watch RUclips's countless videos of some of the finest craftsmen from countries all over the world. I have been particularly impressed with the craftsmanship of Japan's masters, both in woodworking and especially their swordsmiths... Your attention to detail and your skills in working with so many different materials... "Just blows my mind.., maaan...!" (there's that goofy surfer, again) If this only your 2nd sword, (unclear) I can only imagine how great your 3rd, 4th, 5th..... will be. This is undoubtedly the most beautiful sword I've ever seen. If another great "Arthur" film is ever made, I hope the producers become aware of this sword. I imagine that even the one and only, original Arthur would be honored (tickled pink, I suspect) to carry this sword. I also imagine many Ultra HD close-ups of the sword! Very well done! Will you be naming your swords? This one definitely deserves one...
BTW, Did you choose poplar because of its stability? Ease of working? Just curious. (Oh! Your "clamps" are "binder clips"... they make the best "chip clips," too)

Kyle's personality is really funny and personable, but then his craftsmanship is so calm and precise and exacting. I say that because I'm really liking the approach to filming and editing you've developed: it lets the personality come through when appropriate then switches to a very calm, precise, pretty style to match the zen of the crafty parts. You guys are making a great synthesis of your skills for the channel. Cool to see the progress on both fronts.

Hey Kyle, I believe I''ve finally uncovered the secret ingredient to your success as a knife and sword maker, its the amount of COFFEE your drinking!!!!!! Half expected the cross section of the scabbard (wood part) to be oval/leave shaped, instead of the more rounded rectangle you went with. Carrying that design language through. Not that I have anything against what you did, it's fantastic. That's just what I expected. And perhaps with some swells when you look at it from the side. To reflect the swells when you look at it from the front.
Edit: People really underestimate how good just regular wood glue is when gluing wood. Anytime I've broken apart a wood glued piece it breaks the wood apart before the glue bond breaks.

A while ago I watched a video of someone, can't remember who exactly, making a blade and a scabbard for it. When they were hollowing out the wood of the scabbard, they didn't make it perfectly flat on each piece. Insted, it was slanted, so that one side was deeper than the other, which left one side of the groove deeper. Same thing on the other half of the wood. Then, when glued together, it formed the perfect shape for the blade, but the sides of the opening, where the wood glues together, if you drew a line, were diagonal. This was done to strenghten the scabbard- the blade edge was not always running over the seam, but over wood instead.
I hope that made some sense.

okay Kyle, just to let you know, I just subscribed to your channel, on your way to 500,000 subs. and I gotta tell you; I like your personality, your sense of humor, and your artistry. you make absolutely gorgeous pieces! I saw the one video of how you made this sword, now I'm binge watching this whole series for Excelsior.
I have seen other bladesmiths on RUclips, or at least ones who would like to call themselves bladesmiths, turning ordinary household items like screws, etc into knives or swords.
there was this one guy who made a decent blade, and showed how sharp it was, but having already watched the Forged in Fire series and picking up a lot from that, I noticed a lot of stress fractures in his finished piece. as he was showing off how easily it was cutting paper, I was thinking, "Yeah, maybe, but I would absolutely NOT take that into a sword fight!"
